Have you ever cried out for help—not with demands, but from a place of deep need? In Luke 17, ten lepers call out to Jesus not for healing, but for mercy—a word that acknowledges their unworthiness and their hope in His compassion. In today's message, Dr. John Neufeld invites us to consider what it means to receive mercy, and how gratitude—or the lack of it—reveals the posture of our hearts. Why did only one return to give thanks? And would we be the one—or among the nine? The King Arrives: Throughout North American history, there have been two main reactions to monarchy: rebellion or apathy. Some believe the Crown should be rejected, while others see it as largely irrelevant. In short, we wrestle with the idea of kingship. But for followers of Christ, acknowledging Jesus as King is not optional—it's foundational. In this series, Dr. John Neufeld explores Luke 17–20, showing that the Kingship of Jesus is not only central to the Christian faith, but vital for the world.

InLuke chapter 17, Jesus, on His way to Jerusalem, is teaching His disciples somepowerful lessons they'll need to learn and practice if they are going to befollowers of Jesus, making a difference in the world and turning it upside downfor the kingdom of God. He teaches about forgiveness—you're going to beoffended, sometimes by those closest to you, and you have to forgive. Then, you'll need faith to do that, which means being obedient. You'realso going to practice faithfulness in such a way that, no matter how hard youwork, how much you serve, or how tired you are, you simply do the task at handbecause God has commanded you to do it—not out of duty, but out of love andcompassion for Him. You depend on His Holy Spirit to fill you to accomplishthat purpose as a servant of the living God. We are called to the privilege ofserving the Lord; it's not a right, but a privilege, a calling from God forevery believer. From there, we learn thankfulness, and that's what this lessonis about. Nowin Luke 17:11-19, “It happened as Jesus went to Jerusalem, passing throughthe midst of Samaria and Galilee. As He entered a certain village, He met tenmen who were lepers, who stood afar off. They lifted up their voices and said,“Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” When He saw them, He said, “Go, showyourselves to the priests.” As they went, they were cleansed. One of them, whenhe saw that he was healed, returned and, with a loud voice, glorified God. Hefell down on his face at Jesus' feet, giving Him thanks—and he was a Samaritan.Jesus answered and said, “Were not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? Werethere not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?”Then Jesus said to the Samaritan, “Arise, go your way; your faith has made youwell.” Jesusis talking about how, when God does wonderful things for us, we experience Hisgoodness, grace, and mercy. As we are being obedient and faithful, we should bethankful. Gratefulness is an attitude of the heart that reflects our humilityand the grace of God in our lives, recognizing that every good gift, everyperfect gift, and every opportunity we have to serve—every divine appointmentwe're part of—comes from the Lord Himself. We have that wonderful privilege, and we should return to give Him thanks. Whatwe had here were ten men who were lepers, a picture of sin. These men werelost, helpless, and hopeless. They hear the Master coming—one of them aSamaritan—in the midst of Galilee and Samaria, as Jesus is on His way toJerusalem. They call out, “Master, Teacher,” the same word Peter used, recognizing that He has command over everything. He can command demons toleave; He can command sickness to leave. Sothey called out in faith, believing He can do something, and Jesus says, “Go,show yourselves to the priests.” They weren't healed when He spoke the word, but as they turned to go, they were immediately healed. Can you imagine that? They turned to go, and all of a sudden, that leprosy was gone. The nine of themran to fulfill the law, but the one who was a Samaritan ran to the One who wasthe fulfillment of the law—Jesus Christ. He fell down and worshiped Him. Thenine went to worship in a temple; this man made an altar at the feet of Jesus. He fell at His feet and worshiped Him. Jesussaid to him, “Arise, go your way; your faith has saved you.” Those nine men gothealed physically; this man got healed spiritually as well when he found thegrace of God through a thankful, humble heart. “For by grace are you savedthrough faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast.” Myfriend, be grateful, be thankful, and live a life of gratitude to a holy God,because when we're not thankful, we become vain in our imaginations, and ourfoolish hearts are darkened (Romans 1). Beforgiving, be faithful, and be thankful.

Tune in to hear more about:• Why holding the “high card” in trauma can feel isolating, and how I try not to marginalize others' experiences.• The emotional aftermath of returning home after five months in the hospital.• How gratitude can become a grounding force, even in the chaos.• What “making it worth it” really looks like.• Why small wins, like less mayo or fewer cookies, matter and how they add up.• How to feel grateful to yourself for better choices, not just to others.• Using gratitude as a lifeline when weight loss feels frustrating or impossible.• The difference between sweeping big changes and the quiet power of small, consistent ones.Gratitude isn't just for the good days, it's for the hard ones too. It's one of the most overlooked tools in losing weight and I hope this episode can bring you inspiration and fresh perspective. Let's talk about how to use gratitude to our advantage! In this Episode: This episode of the Achieve Results NOW! podcast, hosted by Mark Cardone and Theron Feidt, explores the importance of controlling your "state" (state of mind and being) to achieve greater success. The hosts emphasize that while external factors can influence us, our internal state is something we can actively manage for better results. They outline three key steps to quickly shift your state: 1. Lead with Gratitude: Focus on what you're grateful for. This shifts your perspective and helps you approach challenges with a more positive outlook. The hosts suggest reframing problems as opportunities and keeping a list of wins to cultivate gratitude. 2. Control Your Physical State: Pay attention to your posture, breathing, and facial expressions. Adopting a confident posture, practicing deep breathing, and being mindful of your facial expressions can have a significant impact on your energy and mood. 1 Regular exercise also contributes to a more positive state. 3. Practice Positive Self-Talk: Be kind to yourself and encourage yourself with positive affirmations. Replace negative self-criticism with empowering self-talk and surround yourself with uplifting influences (e.g., positive content, supportive people). THE WOMAN AND HER ALABASTER BOX-LESSONS IN GRATEFULNESSIn middle eastern culture, food and feasting were essential features. It was how family and friends fellowshipped, the welcome gesture to any visitor. It was the symbol of relaxation, hospitality, and generosity, and sometimes a show of affluence. The story in Luke chapter 7 describes one such occasion. Jesus was present as a guest. Being a desert region, sojourners would trek or ride donkeys' long distances through hot and dusty roads to reach their destination. By the time they arrived, their feet would be dirty and must be washed before they made their way into the house. The feet-washing exercise, though, was the job of the house's servants.Jesus was the special guest in the Pharisee's home, and merriment was in full gear. Just as everyone was lost in their mirth, then came into their midst a woman of "easy virtue." Gingerly bearing an alabaster box, she made straight to pour same on Jesus' feet. On citing her, silence and the sweet fragrance of the perfume engulfed the room. How did she get in? Who invited her, and what did she want? Not minding their gaze, she continued her mission, poured the entire content of an alabaster box on His feet, and wiped them with her hair. The occupants of the room were alarmed. What an audacious move! If Jesus was indeed a prophet, He should have known she did not qualify to be in their presence. Why would she waste such expensive perfume? A whole year's wage for dirty feet? What is a woman of loose virtue looking for in such an august gathering Pray tell, in their conceit, how would they imagine she had a noble cause and her deed was divinely orchestrated. Jesus was supposed to be a special guest of honour, yet, no one washed His feet before he came into the house. This woman did much more than washing feet; she anointed them. To think she was showing her heartfelt gratitude. Her "thank you" was meeting the Master's need and incurring the wrath of hypocrites. Amazing! Did she envisage the effect her actions would have? We can safely answer, no, she did not. Her life revealed that when our worship is from the heart and in gratitude to God for all He had done, we might just be etching our names and deeds in the tablets of history.Interestingly, the people who queried the woman's actions and Jesus' "no reaction" did so because she, by her action, exposed their hypocrisy. How did they know she was not worthy? Who made them judge? They were all feasting in the Pharisee's house and needed a saviour. Plus, the fellow who thought her generosity was wasteful, we are told, did not care about the poor; To think that men are quick to accuse others of what they are equally guilty of.Before we close this discourse, let us look at the age-long profession of prostitution. What is it about the trade? Why is it deemed a woman's bane? What happened to the men who engaged them? How should we label them? What makes the institution so ingrained in society? Is it the power that the men have over the women involved? Or the hold the women have over the men that patronise them?Could it be the freedom to do as they pleased? Why would anyone choose the profession? Could it be money, influence, lack of self-worth, or the sweetness of stolen waters? What exactly made prostitution an age-long profession? As for the woman in our story today: we do not know for sure what her trade was (Some thought she was a prostitute), but we do know that she was labelled a sinner by people who should wear a double badge of the same title.Pray tell, is one sin bigger than another? Did the scripture not say that all men have sinned and fallen short of God's glory? So, what is with the finger-pointing?

Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: Mothers of children with special needs experience a wide range of emotions: fear, disappointment, guilt, grief, despair. They have a yearning for relief but often feel isolated and inadequate as they look at the parenting experience of others. As you pour your energy and resources into raising a special needs child, it’s easy to struggle with feelings of isolation, competition, and overwhelm. For the special needs mom who yearns for community and support on what can be a lonely road, my guest, Carrie Holt, wants to remind you that you are not alone, your best IS good enough, and even on the hard days, there are blessings to be had. In honor of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we’re sharing how to find hope and flourish when parenting a special needs child. Quotables from the episode: I have seen how families lose hope, feel strung out, and all alone living this life of being in and out of the hospital. From the time my son was around 20 months of age, I began volunteering at our local children’s hospital and have been passionate about encouraging others ever since. I was joyfully expecting our third child when at a 20 week ultrasound, our doctor told us something was wrong with the baby. We learned he had Myelomeningocele (Spina Bifida) and Hydrocephalus and would require two life-saving surgeries the first day of his life, with one following a few days later. I read a lot about his condition, grieved, and then planned – trying to control everything. It wasn’t until the last few years, that I have truly grieved that, and have been learning to live in the tension of lament. My son ended up being admitted for 64 days, 30 of those in the PICU. He came home with a trach, ventilator, and g-tube with 16 hours a day/7 days a week of home nursing care. He’s been in and out of the hospital repeatedly and to date has had 64 surgeries. The life of parenting a special needs child is continual, so we are all learning to live in the tension of our kids not being healed and how God is with us in all of this. I’m learning that it’s okay to feel disappointed, to lament that to God, and grieve the hard moments of realizing that my son isn’t going to be like other kids. I’m also trying to help him navigate life’s hard questions: “Why did God allow this? Why didn’t he heal me?” His complex emotions, doubts, and anger over being in a wheelchair has been really hard for us. Do not be afraid of grief. Sometimes we feel like it’s going to drown us, but it’s so important to take our messy emotions to God. It’s okay to take our messy emotions to God – even anger, doubt, and fear, but it’s actually essential to our relationship with God and how He meets us there. Emotions aren’t something we get over, they continually come up again and again, but we’ve learned some strategies to deal with them. Gratefulness, getting quiet, and lament are just a few. I think for me personally, it is learning to take this one day at a time, crying out in the pain when it’s there, and then also remembering that God is in control. It’s also just looking for the little gifts of hope and joy that he gives us on a daily basis. Probably the biggest thing has just been his presence and knowing him in a way that I had not known him if I wasn’t in this. As difficult as pain and suffering is, God has showed me his character and his presence and sometimes it's just that perspective shift of Lord show me you, instead of my eyes being on my pain and my suffering, show me how you've prepared me for this, show me your character, show me your glory, show me your comfort. Jesus wants to be present in your pain. Scripture References: Psalm 40:1-3 ESV I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD. Lamentations 3:21-26, ESV But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” - 3 John 1:4In that verse, the Apostle John praises his friend Gaius and other believers for their generosity toward missionaries. As parents, we want our children to be generous toward God's Kingdom. Dr. Art Rainer joins us today with some steps we can take to grow our kids in generosity.Dr. Art Rainer is the founder of the Institute for Christian Financial Health and Christian Money Solutions. He is also the author of The Money Challenge: 30 Days of Discovering God's Design for You and Your Money and the Secret Slide Money Club, a book series designed to teach young readers about God's way of being wise with money. Why Teaching Generosity MattersParenting is a high calling. Everything we say and do influences our children's lives, shaping their worldview and their relationship with God. Generosity is part of God's plan for His people, so we must intentionally guide our kids away from selfishness and toward selflessness. But how do we teach children to be generous when human nature tends to favor holding on rather than giving away? It starts with a few key principles.1. Model GratefulnessBefore kids can learn to give, they must first recognize the blessings they've received. A heart of gratitude fosters a heart of generosity.Regularly express thankfulness for the resources God has given your family. Teach your children that everything belongs to God—we are simply stewards of His gifts. Share stories of how generosity has impacted your own life and how giving frees us from the grip of money.Gratefulness leads to an open-handed posture toward money and possessions.2. Talk About GenerosityChildren won't naturally connect giving to their faith unless we explain it to them. Conversations about generosity help shape their understanding of why we give.Explain that we give because God first gave to us (John 3:16). Share personal testimonies of times when generosity blessed others—or when you were blessed by someone else's generosity. Connect giving to the gospel: Just as God gave us His Son, we reflect His love when we give to others.3. Model Generosity in Everyday LifeKids have a strong radar for hypocrisy. If we talk about generosity but don't practice it, they'll notice. That's why we must demonstrate generosity in tangible ways.Let them see you giving—to your church, to charities, or to people in need. Discuss the needs of others. Ask them, “Have you ever needed help? How did it feel when someone helped you?” Involve them in acts of giving, such as donating food, helping a neighbor, or supporting a ministry. When children witness generosity in action, they begin to understand its value.4. Let Them Earn and GiveFor kids to truly grasp generosity, they need to experience both the sacrifice and joy of giving. One way to do this is by allowing them to earn their own money.Provide opportunities for them to do small jobs or earn an allowance. Encourage them to set aside a portion for giving, just as they do for saving and spending. Let them choose where to give—whether it's to the church, a missionary, or a local charity.Handling their own money makes giving more meaningful and personal.5. Prioritize Giving to the Local ChurchOne of the best ways to instill a habit of generosity is by encouraging children to give to their church.Introduce them to pastors and missionaries so they can see how their giving impacts the Kingdom. Show them how to give—let them physically place money in the offering plate rather than only giving online. Reinforce that their giving contributes to something much bigger than themselves.6. Encourage Giving with Joy, Not GuiltGiving should be joyful, not forced. Pressuring kids to give out of obligation can lead to resentment rather than a cheerful heart. Instead, celebrate their generosity and show them the blessings that come from giving freely. As 2 Corinthians 9:7 reminds us, “God loves a cheerful giver.”Raising generous children requires intentionality. By modeling gratefulness, discussing generosity, and providing opportunities for them to give, we can help shape their hearts to reflect God's generosity.Want to dive deeper into this topic? The person I talked to said I would get an 8,600-dollar bonus immediately if I invested the $60,000. He also said I could take out 20% of the annuity after two years. What do you think about this annuity option?I am 51 years old. I retire at the end of next year and have a state pension. In addition, I also have some 401ks and 403bs that I've tapped into over the last, you know, 30 years that I've been employed or contributed to. Instead, what do I do with those 401k's and 403B's at that time of retirement?Half of my portfolio is in real estate, and the other half is in stocks. The old advice was to move more into bonds as you get older, but bonds haven't done well lately while the stock market has been incredible. One way the Pilgrims showed thankfulness was by being generous with the Native Americans, sharing their faith, time, and harvest with them. Is negativity killing your family's culture? Today we are talking about gratitude and how powerful it is. Just in time for Thanksgiving (which we did on purpose) we want to talk about gratitude, gratefulness, thankfulness, and joy! As we prepare for Jesus' birth, we need to start practicing our gratitude muscle – because this season is ALL ABOUT HIM! “Gratefulness is an attitude of gratitude. When you are full of great if flows out of you!” - Suz Here are the main topics from today's episode: Lead by example – parents, say thank you first! Building gratefulness in your littles- it starts before they can talk Gratefulness is a superpower (More on this in Episode #91) Examples of building a grateful culture Gratitude is... The condition or quality of being grateful; an emotion or sentiment of thankfulness. A warm sense of appreciation for kindness received; accompanied by a feeling of good will toward the benefactor, and a desire to repay the favor. Thankfulness is... Recognizing who God is and what he has done. Joy is... A feeling of good pleasure and happiness that is dependent on who Jesus is rather than on who we are or what is happening around us. Joy comes from the Holy Spirit, abiding in God's presence and from hope in His word. Define these with your family this month and practice them! We believe these are the ingredients to a life-giving culture in your home. When we focus on building gratefulness, thankfulness, and joy - gratitude will become the norm. Practice these things this week and watch how your family culture changes for the better! Podcast Resources: Give us a review! Stephanie welcomes Rachel Wojo, who exhibits grace under pressure. Rachel recounts the hardships she's faced, not as a means of lament, but as a powerful testimony to her faith in God. Throughout the years, Rachel has encountered numerous challenges that have tested her faith and resilience. Rather than succumbing, she has chosen to lean into God's strength. From personal hardships like joblessness and financial stress, to navigating the extraordinary pains of watching her daughter slowly lose her life to a rare disease, and the loss of several other key family members, Rachel's story of tenaciously clinging to Christ proves that it is possible to emerge stronger and more faithful. Rachel shares her story of becoming a single mother to a special needs child after discovering her husband's affair, leading her to rely more deeply on her faith. Her eventual remarriage and the birth of five children, along with the devastating loss of her daughter Taylor to a rare neurological condition, illustrate the peaks and valleys of her journey. What happens when God's answer to our prayer is NO? Rachel shares her journey of praying for her daughter Taylor's earthly healing, only to embrace the eventual understanding that Taylor's true healing would come in heaven. This acceptance of God's broader plan beyond immediate desires offers a deeper understanding and trust in His divine wisdom. Rachel's book, "Desperate Prayers," is a source of comfort and guidance for those struggling with faith and prayer life. Her stories, drawn from personal pain and loss, illustrate the profound transformation that can come from earnest, desperate prayers and a heartfelt surrender to God. Rachel offers vivid examples of the importance of gratitude. She shares how she has learned to recognize "God moments"—serendipitous events that, when noticed, reveal God's subtle presence and guidance in our daily lives. She recalls pivotal moments where choosing to focus on small blessings, such as "noticing the sunshine through the window," helped her navigate through immense grief and trials. This perspective shift, seeing God's work in the gentle, everyday occurrences, has been transformative for her. Rachel reflects on her journey of enduring hardship and witnessing God's hand in the small moments of life. When reflecting on the journey of a faithful servant, it's the moments of hardship and perseverance that vividly stand out. Rachel explores the idea of discovering gratefulness in small, often overlooked, moments. In our fast-paced world, it's easy to become overwhelmed by adversity, missing the simple blessings that God provides daily. Rachel shares how she has cultivated an attitude of gratitude, even during the toughest times. This perspective shift has allowed her to recognize and cherish the small glimpses of joy and blessings in her life. By focusing on God's presence in the mundane and the miraculous, Rachel demonstrates that gratefulness can be a powerful antidote to despair. Stephanie's conversation with Rachel invites all of us to reflect on our own lives and consider how we can embrace gratefulness and deeper faith amidst our trials. Our journeys, no matter how difficult, are imbued with God's grace and presence. So, listen to Rachel's story; and then also introspectively examine your own hardships and blessings. By fostering a heart of gratitude, we too can witness God's hand in our lives and draw strength from it. MEET RACHEL WOJO https://rachelwojo.com/ Rachel says, "Sin erupted in my 'perfect life'. I grew up in a wonderful Christian home with fabulous Christian parents. Our family was faithful to church, and I graduated from a Christian school. I attended a Christian college and completed the circle by teaching in a Christian school. My future husband was a “preacher boy,” and when we married, the plan was that he would take a youth pastor position wherever God led. Only after we married did he have serious doubts about his calling and stop attending church altogether. After two years of marriage, a precious daughter was born to us via emergency c-section. She experienced oxygen deprivation and required resuscitation, but she lived. Three years after Taylor's birth, I discovered that her father had been having an affair essentially four of the five years we were married. Despite that great protective environment I'd always known, and being faithful to God's house, sin had erupted in my “perfect” life, and my marriage to this man didn't withstand. Bad choices were made by both parties, and we divorced. Despite all the pain and loss of the “perfect” life, God brought a solid Christian man into my life, and He has given us a wonderful story of grace and redemption. But amid Matt and I falling in love, my dearest mom fell severely ill, diagnosed with a rare type of anemia. Two months later, the diagnosis was changed to leukemia, and she lived just six short months after that. Mom was the strongest, most faithful Christian I've ever personally known; she was my best friend. The discovery process for my daughter Taylor's developmental delays became more intense during my divorce and my mom's death. Doctors often blamed the delays on her lack of oxygen at birth. But in my heart, I knew there was more to her issues. Nine months after my mom's death, the diagnosis for Taylor came through: MPSIIIB, a rare genetic metabolic disorder that causes gradual neurological degeneration. The average life span is 10-15 years, and there is no cure or even a treatment. Upon receiving Taylor's diagnosis, my walk with the Lord became intense. I asked all the “why” and “how” questions. I wanted God to spill out His plan for my entire life in one day. But through His Word, God has taught me that faith is not only a one-time decision; it's an everyday decision. Trusting His plan for your everyday life is equally as important as trusting Him for your eternal life. On January 2, 2019, our Taylor graduated to heaven. The heartache and sorrow of our loss, yet heaven's gain, is difficult to describe in a few words. In November 2018, I began writing letters to Taylor because she could no longer communicate. God has richly blessed Matt and me with a beautiful family and more blessings than we can count. Our incredible six children are growing steadily; they challenge me and bless me in every way. I am so very thankful for them. Each day we live by faith that God would have His will in our lives. Each day we claim God's promises and choose to run towards His plan, no matter what it includes. We are still learning how to take one more step." MORE ABOUT "DESPERATE PRAYERS" Do your prayers resemble last-minute cries more than first-response chats? Because he lived, died, and resurrected we can face our trials and even have the option of faith resulting from it! But here is the best part. You don't have to squeeze out fruit on your own. You don't have to muster enough faith to produce fruit. Our fruit is an extension of his work and flows from him through us.
