The uMkhonto weSizwe Party has called for the immediate resignation of the commissioner of the Electoral Commission, Janet Love for what the party says is her blatant bias. The party has warned that if Love does not exit the commission in the next seven days, it reserves the right to pursue all available avenues including approaching the courts. In a statement, the party has cited Love's response to a question during a January media briefing in which she said Zuma would not be eligible to be on the MK Party's Parliamentary candidates' list. It says the pronouncement was premature and in violation of electoral rules which stipulate that such declarations can only be made following an official objection. The opposition has accused the elections of rigging and voter suppression due to delays. Election observers have also said this week's voting violated democratic ideals. Former Tshwane Mayor Dr. Murunwa Makwarela resigned on Friday and was disowned by his party COPE after the Gauteng High Court dispelled information that it issued him with an insolvency rehabilitation certificate in 2018. Makwarela had submitted the fake certificate, a day before, to city manager Johann Mettler to prove he was not an unrehabilitated insolvent and was eligible to occupy a public office. The city has been forced to concede that it does not have measures in place to verify the authenticity of such documents. This saga has brought into sharp focus the lack of capacity and urgent need to validate and authenticate all personal information of people who are vying for public office at local, provincial, and national levels.
