The Dog Gone Positive Way
How Can You Help Your Veterinarian & Staff With Compassion Fatigue?

The Dog Gone Positive Way

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 25, 2025 10:43

Compassion Care for Those Who Care for Our PetsIn this emotional episode of The Dog Gone Positive Way, I continue my conversation with Adam Spencer, CFRE, founder of Furlanthropy, to confront one of the most common crises in veterinary medicine today: Compassion Fatigue. The life-saving care and the emotional support veterinarians, veterinarian technicians, assistants, and front desk staff give their clients takes a toll. Veterinarians are 2-3 times more likely to die by suicide as compared to other professionals.  We go to a veterinary office with a healthy pet for a routine checkup, or our pet in crisis who needs immediate care. In those moments, we expect compassion, understanding, and expertise—for our pets and for ourselves. But how often do we stop to think about what the people on the other side of the exam table are carrying? Veterinarians, technicians, assistants, front desk, and other staff work in a profession rooted in love and empathy. Yet it comes with an emotional cost few of us fully see. Compassion fatigue, burnout, moral distress, long hours, and repeated exposure to grief take a profound toll. When we are in crisis with our pets, it can be nearly impossible to hold space for anything else. But consider this: the veterinarian standing in front of you may have just walked out of the exam room next door after euthanizing another family's pet—perhaps one they've known since puppyhood or kittenhood. And now, they must take a breath, steady themselves, and walk into your room offering calm, care, and compassion all over again. That emotional whiplash happens multiple times a day. What Is Compassion Fatigue?Compassion fatigue is the emotional and physical exhaustion that comes from prolonged caregiving and repeated exposure to trauma and grief. It doesn't mean a lack of caring—it means too much caring for too long without enough support. How Can We Help Our Veterinarians and Their Staff?Small acts matter more than we realize:• Practice patience. Delays, tough news, or difficult conversations aren't personal—they're often the result of someone else's emergency or loss.• Use kind language. Stressful moments can escalate quickly. A calm tone and respectful words can make a world of difference.• Say thank you—and mean it. A genuine “I appreciate what you do” carries weight.• Leave positive reviews. These help morale more than you might imagine, especially after difficult days.• Support fair care. Veterinary teams want to help every animal, but they face financial, ethical, and emotional limits.• Acknowledge their humanity. They are professionals—but they are also people who grieve, love, and hurt.If you've ever felt supported, comforted, or guided through one of the hardest moments of pet ownership, that care came at a cost to someone who chose this profession out of love.Mental Health Resources for Veterinarians & Veterinary StaffIf you are a veterinarian, technician, or staff member—or you love someone who is—support is available:• Not One More Vet (NOMV)NOMV Created by Dr. Nicole MacArthur October 1, 2014, following the suicide of world-renowned veterinary behaviorist Dr. Sophia Yin. • AVMA Wellbeing & Peer Support ResourcesThe American Veterinary Medical Association provides mental health tools, wellness education, & confidential peer assistance.https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/wellbeing• 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (U.S.)Call or text 988 for immediate, confidential support—24/7.International:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_suicide_crisis_lines• Local Veterinary Peer Support GroupsMany state and regional veterinary associations offer confidential peer-to-peer programs.Asking for help is not a weakness. "When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him." Have you ever embarked on a journey that was entirely unexpected yet filled with wonder? Just like the Holy Family in their flight to Egypt, our lives can resemble a GPS-guided convoy, where every turn is divinely orchestrated. It's a reminder that God is our ultimate guide, navigating us through the winding roads of life. Reflect on the unexpected directions you've taken this year. Moments when you felt the gentle shield of God protecting you, as He guided Joseph and Mary to safety. As Psalm 121 reminds us, “The Lord will keep you from all harm; He will watch over your life.” What a comforting thought! Your journey, whether literal or figurative, is under God's careful watch, ensuring that you are always in His loving embrace. Psalm 121:7-8 says, "The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore." Think of your life's path as a series of delightful detours, each one illuminated by divine light. Remember, as paraphrased from Proverb 16:9, "We plan the itinerary; the Lord books the providential layovers. Delays become right-on-time arrivals." Just like a well-planned road trip, when we are in tune with God's guidance, every moment becomes an opportunity for growth and discovery. Every twist and turn has a purpose, leading us closer to our destination. The journey of life is all about obedience because “Protection packs every journey of obedience.” Every commitment you've made in faith is like a ticket to adventure. As you reflect on how God has supported you, you may realize that obedience often looks like travel. It's a journey into the unknown, but one filled with promise and divine protection just like that of the Holy Family. Remember, “Where God guides, He provides.” Isaiah 58:11 says, "The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail." Amen Prayer for the Day!Heavenly Father, thank You for being our guide and protector in every season of life. Brethren, I pray for you. May the Holy Spirit help you to embrace life's journey with trust in God, knowing that He has paved your paths with divine purpose. With the end of 2025 approaching and 2026 dawning before us, may the Lord crown this year with His goodness and usher you into the next with fresh grace. May He steady your steps, enlarge your hope, and fill your days with wisdom, courage, and peace. May every closed door guide you to the door He opens, and every trial refine your faith like gold. In Jesus name. Amen.

In this episode, Dr. Mark Bonta sits down with pediatrician and medical journalist Dr. Alok Patel to unpack what it really means to keep kids healthy in a chaotic healthcare system and a distracted digital world. Starting with a story about Mark's nine year old getting injured at hockey, they dive into how parents can respond to injuries and illness without panicking, how to check your own emotions first, and when a situation truly belongs in the emergency department versus urgent care or a clinic visit.Drawing on his frontline pediatric experience, Dr. Patel breaks down practical red flags for parents to watch for, like increased work of breathing or changes in mental status, and explains why ER waits feel so brutal yet often reflect deeper system issues like staffing and bed shortages. He shares behind the scenes stories from “The Pitt” and his work on the official HBO companion podcast, highlighting how accurately the show captures social determinants of health and the emotional reality of modern emergency care. From there, the conversation moves into vaccines, flu season, and the very human fact that even doctors sometimes struggle to follow all their own advice. Mark and Alok talk candidly about phones, social media, Roblox, and why today's kids are essentially part of a live experiment in screen exposure. They close with a focus on what actually protects kids long term: safe, nonjudgmental adults, honest conversations about mental health, limits around screens, and a home environment that values connection over perfection.Dr. Alok Patel's https://www.alokpatelmd.com/Episode Takeaways1. Parent First, Patient Second: Kids borrow their reaction from you, so the first step in any injury or illness is to calm your own emotions before you decide what to do.2. ER vs Clinic: Not every vomit, bump, or fever is life threatening, and learning when to use urgent care or outpatient clinics can spare families long, stressful ER waits.3. Triage Reality Check: Emergency departments prioritize the sickest patients first, which means long waits for minor issues are frustrating but often a sign the system is doing its job.4. Medicine Behind the Camera: The Pit shows how accurate medical details can sit in the background while stories focus on the real emotional chaos of patients, families, and staff.5. Social Determinants in Real Time: Two kids with the same diagnosis can have completely different outcomes depending on housing, income, family support, and access to care.6. Doctors Are Human Too: Even physicians miss flu shots, struggle with habits, or feel guilty, which can actually make their public health messages more relatable, not less credible.7. Screens and Social Media: The real risk is not one device but a constant digital environment that shapes brain development, sleep, self esteem, and social skills in ways we are only starting to understand.8. Safe Adults Save Lives: The most powerful protection for teens is a nonjudgmental adult who listens, normalizes hard conversations, and gives kids a place to bring their worst thoughts without fear.Episode Timestamps02:06 – Hockey Rink Medicine: How Doctors Triage Their Own Kids04:07 – Parents First: Calming Yourself Before You React to Injury06:50 – ER, Urgent Care, or Clinic: How to Decide Where Your Child Belongs09:37 – Waiting Room Reality: Triage, Delays, and Why Sickest Kids Go First12:34 – Inside “The Pit”: TV Emergency Medicine, Accuracy, and Chaos24:50 – Flu Shots, Doctor Guilt, and Why Practice Often Lags Advice31:06 – Kids, Phones, and Social Media: The Live Experiment on Their Brains37:08 – Teen Mental Health Red Flags: Subtle Signs and Safe Adult Spaces >>>>>> The expressed opinions belong solely to the hosts and guests, and they do not necessarily reflect the views or opinions of the Hospitals, Clinics, Universities, or any other organization associated with the host or guests.    Disclosures: Ditch The Lab Coat podcast is produced by (soundsdebatable.com) and is independent of Dr. Bonta's teaching and research roles at McMaster University, Temerty Faculty of Medicine and Queens University.

On today's podcast:1) The US’s pursuit of a third oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela has intensified a blockade that the Trump administration hopes will cut off a vital economic lifeline for the country and isolate the government of President Nicolás Maduro. The US Coast Guard chased the US-sanctioned Bella 1 on Sunday as it was en route to Venezuela. It boarded Centuries, a ship owned by a Hong Kong-based entity, on Saturday — the first non-sanctioned vessel to be targeted. Another very large crude carrier, the Skipper, was intercepted on Dec. 10. The moves on three separate vessels represent the most concerted attempt to date to sever the financial links sustaining a government that Washington says is led by a drug-trafficking cartel, and one that it has also recently designated as a foreign terrorist organization. Maduro has so far withstood the onslaught, but the blockade is beginning to limit hard currency and to hurt an already battered economy.2) Democratic lawmakers said they plan to explore “all legal options” after the Justice Department announced it will not release all documents about the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein by the Friday deadline, threatening to prolong a high-stakes political fight as the midterm elections come into view. The US Justice Department released thousands of pages of pictures, phone records and notes from investigations into notorious sex offender on Friday, revealing new details about the late financier’s relationships with prominent business leaders and politicians. The department said more files will be released in coming weeks because the volume of material was too much to process by the Friday deadline set by Congress, sparking rebukes from many Democrats. The tranche included heavy redactions, a step intended to comply with the provisions of the law including protections for survivors and other accommodations.3) A Supreme Court ruling that scraps President Trump’s tariffs — and refunds the import fees collected — would create a major “administrative problem,” the president’s top economic adviser said Sunday. “We really expect the Supreme Court is going to find with us,” Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, told CBS’s Face the Nation. Even if the court didn’t find in the Trump administration’s favor, Hassett argued it would be “pretty unlikely that they’re going to call for widespread refunds because it would be an administrative problem to get those refunds out there.” The Supreme Court is weighing a legal challenge to tariffs Trump imposed on dozens of nations under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Administration officials have drawn up options for reimposing import taxes in case of an adverse ruling, while publicly maintaining that a court defeat is unlikely.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty sits down with Mike Barefoot to unpack how movement builds more than muscles. It builds discipline, mindset, emotional regulation, and leadership performance. Mike shares why physical outlets like martial arts, workouts, walking, and simple daily activity help professionals vent stress without torching relationships at work. They also break down the real hack most people miss. Consistency beats intensity, and incremental progress turns fitness into a lifestyle instead of a short-term grind. If you want better focus, less burnout, and stronger decision-making, this conversation links fitness and mental health in a way that's practical and repeatable. About the Guest: Mike Barefoot has spent 27+ years in the staffing industry, placing 1,000+ professionals, generating $50M+ in revenue, and earning top awards like Rookie of the Year, Performer of the Year, and multiple Presidents Club honors. He is also a 37-year martial arts practitioner, a 7th degree black belt in karate, plus advanced ranks in jujitsu and kickboxing, and a multi-time Hall of Fame inductee. Mike speaks to MBA students, executives, and entrepreneurs on performance, balance, and sustainable excellence. Key Takeaways: Physical outlets reduce stress spillover. Training gives you a clean place to “dump pressure” so you show up calmer at work and at home. Balance is a performance strategy, not a luxury. When energy is distributed across life areas, productivity and resilience improve. Compete with yourself, not the room. Self-accountability creates consistent growth without chasing external validation. Perfection in results is rare. “Perfect intent” means daily effort aligned to your goals even when outcomes vary. Set incremental targets. Instead of chasing 50 pounds or 2-hour workouts, aim for small wins like 10 to 15 minutes daily. Avoid the “ready, set, stop” trap in business. Delays and hurdles happen. Use movement to prevent frustration from damaging relationships. Momentum matters. An object in motion tends to stay in motion. Small action keeps you progressing. Use micro-journaling. Track activity on a mini calendar or your phone so your brain can't inflate effort. Limited time can improve focus. Small windows force sharper training and sharper studying, especially for young professionals. Movement upgrades decision-making. More energy and clarity leads to better choices and less burnout over time. How Listeners Can Connect With Mike: Email: LinkedIn Want to be a guest on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life? Aviation News Air India Boeing 787 Crash Probe Leads to Tussle Between Investigators India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) and U.S. agencies, such as the NTSB and FAA, investigating the Air India crash have clashed over where and how to read out the flight recorders, access to evidence, and the overall pace and transparency of the investigation. U.S. officials reportedly feared a lack of openness, while Indian officials pushed back strongly against what they saw as outside interference and challenges to their competence. Boeing 787, courtesy Air India. Preliminary technical findings point toward the 787's fuel control switches being moved from “RUN” to “CUTOFF,” starving both engines of fuel shortly after takeoff. Some U.S. sources suspect deliberate pilot action, while Indian authorities have downplayed pilot culpability in public. Boom Supersonic Secures Breakthrough AI Engine Deal Boom Supersonic is developing the Symphony propulsion system to power its Overture supersonic airliner. At the same time, AI data centers require enormous compute power, and they need energy to do that. Boom says that it will develop the land-based Superpower 42-megawatt natural gas turbine, based on the Symphony engine. If successful, the Superpower would generate a revenue stream and provide operating data. Crusoe Energy has 29 Superpower units on order, with delivery expected in 2027. Major aero‑derivative OEMs offering ground power generation include: General Electric, Siemens Energy, Mitsubishi Power, Rolls‑Royce, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. AvWeek reports that Boom has closed a $300 million funding round, which the company says, together with the AI gas turbine deal, will be sufficient to complete development of the Symphony and initial Overture aircraft. Spirit Airlines Reaches Another Milestone in its Restructuring as Pilots and Flight Attendants Ratify Agreements Spirit Airlines announced the ratification of labor agreements with pilots (represented by the Air Line Pilots Association) and flight attendants (represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA). The two agreements are subject to court approval. 82% of the pilots voted in favor of the contract, which allows temporary reductions in pay rates and retirement contributions effective January 1, 2026. Pay rates are restored through guaranteed increases on August 1, 2028, and January 1, 2029. Company-funded retirement contributions will be fully restored by July 1, 2029. US invalidates union contract covering 47,000 TSA officers, AFGE vows to challenge The American Federation of Government Employees represents airport screening officers and plans to file a lawsuit after Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem terminated the collective bargaining agreement. DHS plans to implement a new labor framework on January 11, 2026, when the collection of union dues from TSA officers’ paychecks will cease. TSA said the new labor framework “will return the agency back into a security-focused framework that prioritizes workforce readiness, resource allocation and mission focus with an effective stewardship of taxpayer dollars.” US signs nearly $140m deal to purchase six Boeing 737s for use in deportations The Department of Homeland Security signed a contract with Arlington, Virginia-based Daedalus Aviation Corporation to purchase six Boeing 737 planes for deportation operations. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said: “This new initiative will save $279m in taxpayer dollars by allowing ICE to operate more effectively, including by using more efficient flight patterns.” Daedalus Aviation Corporation focuses on turnkey flight operations and specialized charter services for government and high‑stakes commercial clients. Maria Cantwell (D-Washington) says FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford promised to sell his multimillion-dollar stake in Republic Airways under his ethics agreement, but he has failed to do so. Bedford agreed to sell all his shares within 90 days of his confirmation, but 150 days have now passed. In a letter to Bedford, Sen. Cantwell writes, “It appears you continue to retain significant equity in this conflicting asset months past the deadline set to fully divest from Republic, which constitutes a clear violation of your ethics agreement. This is unacceptable and demands a full accounting.” New V-22 Mishap Reviews Find Material Issues with Osprey, Poor Communication Between Services Two new reports point to faulty parts, poorly understood maintenance procedures, and a lack of communication across the services. The result was a lack of safety and reliability across the Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps. One report was from the Naval Air Systems Command, and the other was from the Government Accountability Office. Both had been in the works for two years. Twenty people were killed in V-22 Osprey accidents from 2022 to 2024. Congress Postpones A-10 Retirement The A-10 Thunderbolt II (the Warthog) close support aircraft has been on the verge of retirement for years. The National Defense Appropriations Act (NDAA) directs the Air Force to keep at least 103 A-10 aircraft in its inventory until a phaseout in 2029. The NDAA limits retirement plans for other aircraft: KC-10 tankers, the F-15E Strike Eagle, and the E-3 Sentry surveillance plane. Delays in supplying replacements are cited as the reason. Why Your Subs Aren't Showing Up  And How to Fix It FastIf you're tired of subs ghosting your job sites or slowing down your projects, this episode is going to change the way you run your business. Here's the truth most contractors never hear: your subs aren't unreliable… they're uncoordinated. And without structure, follow-through, and constant reminders, even the best subs end up operating like a herd of distracted cats.In this episode, I break down the real reason subs miss deadlines, show up late, or forget your projects altogether and it has nothing to do with laziness. You'll learn how schedules shift daily, why subs get pulled in every direction, and how proactive communication turns inconsistency into reliability. Most important, you'll discover why you shouldn't be the one chasing subs, sending reminders, or juggling schedule changes and how a remote project coordinator can take that entire burden off your shoulders.Inside this episode: • Why subs forget your job (and why it's not personal) • How daily schedule changes create chaos behind the scenes • The communication gaps destroying your timelines • What happens when you stop coordinating and subs start deciding • How a remote project coordinator keeps every job moving on time • The mindset shift that helps you take back control of your projectsIf you're ready to stop letting subs run your schedule and start running a business that moves forward every day—whether you're on the job or not—this episode is a must-listen.

Part 3 — The Pearl Harbor FinaleBy the time the smoke cleared, the war was already underway—but the questions were just beginning. How did Pearl Harbor happen, and who was supposed to stop it? In the years that followed, the U.S. launched investigation after investigation, each one promising answers and delivering something closer to discomfort. Blame landed quickly on Admiral Kimmel and General Short, careers ended in silence, while other decisions stayed buried in classified files for decades. This episode walks through what those investigations actually found. Intelligence was intercepted, but not fully shared. Warnings were issued, but they were vague. Messages moved slowly, assumptions moved fast. Pearl Harbor wasn't one failure—it was dozens of small ones stacked on top of each other. And once the records were declassified, the story didn't clean itself up. It got messier. Then come the theories that never went away. The Henry Stimson diary. The idea of “maneuvering” Japan into firing first. The broken diplomatic codes that said war was coming but never named Pearl Harbor. Was this deliberate, or did Washington simply believe the attack would land somewhere else? We lay out what's documented, what's inferred, and what still lives in the gray. The series closes with what Pearl Harbor left behind: the memorials, the reconciliations, the oil still surfacing from the USS Arizona. A reminder that history doesn't usually unfold as a plot—it unfolds as a chain reaction. Assumptions. Delays. Missed signals. And consequences that last far longer than the morning that caused them.www.patreon.com/theconspiracypodcast
