Sir Keir Starmer has set out what he sees as the central purpose of his government - to bring people together in the cause of national renewal, and help them resist what he called, the voices trying to sow division. In his speech to the Labour party conference in Liverpool, the Prime Minister promised to fight for a decent, tolerant country - reclaiming national flags while acknowledging what he said were reasonable concerns about immigration and the security of the borders. He repeatedly attacked Reform UK and Nigel Farage, saying they wanted Britain to fail.

Last week, PA leader Gayton McKenzie announced that a law firm had cleared Kunene of any wrongdoing. McKenzie has threatened to withdraw the PA from the Government of National Unity and all municipal coalitions by tomorrow if Joburg Mayor Dada Morero does not reinstate Kunene. Kunene was re-sworn in as a Johannesburg city councillor last week. For more on this we joined by ActionSA Joburg Regional Secretary, Lebo Mokoka

The Imbalance of Power, with Yuval Levin

Unity is acting together even when we don't think alike. And one of the primary aims of the American Constitution is to support a democracy of those unified in diversity. Yuval Levin joins Mark Labberton to explore the precarious state of American constitutional life and the imbalance of power between the branches of the U.S. government. Drawing from his book America's Covenant, Levin argues that the Founders designed the Constitution above all to preserve unity in a divided society. Yet today, he warns, the imbalance of power—particularly the weakness of Congress and the rise of presidential authority—threatens democratic legitimacy. In this conversation, Levin reflects on originalism, the courts, Donald Trump's expanding influence, and the dangers of both passivity and autocracy. With clarity and urgency, he calls for renewed civic engagement and for Congress to reclaim its central role. Episode Highlights “Unity doesn't mean thinking alike. Unity means acting together. And the question for a modern political society is how do we act together when we don't think alike?” “The biggest problem we have is that Congress is under-active, radically under-active and has turned itself into a spectator.” “The president is in charge of the executive branch, but the executive branch is not in charge of the American government.” “I am very concerned about this kind of Caesar-ism. I think it is very dangerous.” “What we're seeing is constitutional creep, where the president is pushing and nobody's pushing back, and only Congress can do it.” “I worry a lot about Donald Trump. But the reason I worry is because Congress isn't doing its job.” “The politics of an autocratic state is a politics of spectators, and we just cannot become spectators.” “All of us will find ourselves in the minority sooner or later.” Helpful Links and Resources America's Covenant: The Constitution and the Path to National Unity, by Yuval Levin American Enterprise Institute (Find Yuval Levin's current research and publications) *New York Times Opinion* – Yuval Levin's columns at the New York Times About Yuval Levin Yuval Levin is director of Social, Cultural, and Constitutional Studies at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he also holds the Beth and Ravenel Curry Chair in Public Policy. He is the founder and editor of National Affairs, senior editor of The New Atlantis, a contributing editor at National Review, and a contributing opinion writer at The New York Times. He is the author of several books on political theory and public policy, most recently American Covenant: How the Constitution Unified Our Nation—and Could Again (Basic Books, 2024), which examines the U.S. Constitution through the lens of national unity in a divided society. Show Notes Constitutional unity and division Yuval Levin summarizes America's Covenant as a reintroduction to the Constitution framed around the challenge of unity in diversity. “Unity doesn't mean thinking alike. Unity means acting together.” The Constitution prioritizes bargaining, negotiation, and legitimacy over efficiency. Congress was designed as the “first branch” of government to embody pluralism and force compromise. The decline of Congress and rise of the presidency Levin argues Congress is radically under-active, ceding ground to presidents and courts. “The biggest problem we have is that Congress is under-active, radically under-active and has turned itself into a spectator.” Excessive focus on the presidency erodes democratic legitimacy. Current frustrations stem from misunderstanding the system's design: it resists narrow majorities and forces broad coalitions. Courts, originalism, and the unitary executive Levin affirms he is an originalist: “a philosophy of judicial interpretation … a mode of self-restraint for judges.” Supreme Court decisions in recent years repeatedly signal: “Congress, do your job.” He outlines the unitary executive theory: the president controls the executive branch, but not the government as a whole. “The president is in charge of the executive branch, but the executive branch is not in charge of the American government.” Trump's expanding power Levin warns of the growing push to centralize authority in the presidency. “I am very concerned about this kind of Caesar-ism. I think it is very dangerous.” Trump's second term differs because restraints have vanished; his circle now encourages unrestrained executive action. Disruption of long-held norms has weakened trust in American institutions globally and domestically. Constitutional crisis vs. constitutional creep Levin distinguishes between “creep,” “conflict,” and “crisis.” He argues the U.S. is experiencing constitutional creep: unchecked executive power without Congress pushing back. True crisis would involve direct defiance of the courts—something still possible but not yet realized. The role of citizens and civic responsibility Levin stresses the danger of passivity: “The politics of an autocratic state is a politics of spectators, and we just cannot become spectators.” Citizens should keep writing to Congress, vote with clear expectations, and engage in local governance. State legislatures, though less visible, often function better than Congress today. Clear thinking itself, Levin suggests, is a moral act for a healthy republic. More and more parties and organisations are withdrawing from the National Convention amid fears that the National Dialogue will become an African National Congress (ANC) monologue. In this interview with BizNews, Dr Theuns Eloff of the Afrikaner Leadership Network (ALN) says: “There are, for good reason, fears and suspicions that the Presidency has taken this over, not as a Government of National Unity, but as an ANC Presidency to steer this process into a certain way and to avert any negative criticism that can come to the ANC.” On top of that there is a real fear that the ANC could misuse the dialogue to boost its chances in local government elections next year. “It's like the ANC says we don't have enough money in our own coffers to run a campaign, let us use the National Dialogue for that. And if the ANC goes ahead alone with these things with public money, then they have a campaign. They can wage their campaign without interference from anyone else.” Furthermore, Dr Eloff expresses concern that President Cyril Ramaphosa sees the National Dialogue as his personal legacy. “It's said in the Presidency that he wants a thousand people there because he wants to make a speech. Now that is not a National Dialogue. That is exactly an ANC monologue.” Meanwhile, Dr Eloff outlines the dialogue options open to civil society organisations.

The breakdown of governance and operational performance at the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) amid allegations of corruption and maladministration is laid bare in this BizNews interview with Toby Chance, the Democratic Alliance (DA) spokesperson on Trade, Industry and Competition. Describing the role whistleblowers have played in exposing the rot, he says: "I was appointed to my position in July after the formation of the Government of National Unity and very soon after that I started to receive emails from whistleblowers…” However, “they were victimised, they were bullied, and many of them have taken leave…it actually took until February and multitudinous letters from me and questions in Parliament…for the Minister to actually finally take action, which he did in February by appointing TSU International to conduct an independent investigation. And we're now waiting to see the outcome of that investigation.” Meanwhile, Chance is confident that Minister Parks Tau will do “the right thing” once he has received the investigation report. “He doesn't really have any choice. Otherwise, the SABS will collapse...It's not collapsed yet, but it's close to it.” Chance adds that Minister Tau “did inherit a hornet's nest of problems when he came into the job, not just at the SABS, but in many of the other entities in the DTIC's family. And I do think that he wants to clear the decks…”

Briefing the media on the outcome of the ANC’s National Working Committee (NWC) on Tuesday, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said that the party will "hit the reset button” and start engaging with parties inside and outside the GNU. This is mainly to tackle the impasse over the 2025 budget that has emerged. Negotiations will take place over the next five days. This ‘reset’ does not entail booting the DA from the GNU, or pushing for any specific changes. Subsequently, Mashele, Pooe and Tandwa discuss and ask: What the way forward is for the GNU. Will the 2025 budget be passed? Will there be a reconfiguration? Where do we stand on the VAT increase? "It's been a rather tumultuous time, a time of uncertainty... what we know right now is that the ANC's currently in conversation with its political partners in the GNU and those who supported it from the outside the GNU primarily, Action SA. What's interesting for us is to see what's going to come out of those conversations." - Lizeka Tandwa, Digital Politics Editor - TimesLIVE and Sunday Times "We must keep this in mind and we must never forget that the biggest two components - that is the ANC and DA - are strategic enemies and they are in this government to weaken each other. That is what we must keep in mind all the time when we see all the dramas... that's number one." - Prince Mashele, Political Analyst "What holds this thing together? Business is deeply involved in Operation Vulindlela, the reform process inside the Presidency but, says Kingston, they're not going to interfere in the politics. "It's much better in our view to stay the course,” he says. "We are deeply concerned that ... there is going to be either a minority government or a change in the composition of the GNU that undermines certainty and predictability, that undermines confidence, and confidence levels are now very thin, or where we can't see the reforms that are taking place then of course we're allow to express our opinion. What we're not going to do is apply pressure, as has been suggested, to any of the parties. That would be wholly inapprpropriate. We work with the government of the day.”. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson New Libyan Islamic rules could hurt Christians Please pray for the small Christian community in Muslim-majority Libya after the introduction of a Public Morality Protection unit, also referred to as the “morality police.” Imed Trabelsi, a minister of Libya's Government of National Unity, said  there is “no space for personal freedom in Libya.” Women are particularly affected by the “morality” measures. Among restrictions on clothing, female students will be required to wear the hijab, and women will be banned from traveling without a male guardian. Barnabas Aid reports that Christians are among those who may be at risk of greater repression and more extensive application of the Islamic law. Most Christians are migrant workers. There is a small number of Libyan converts from Islam which could lead to a death sentence if discovered. Japan's hurting economy The world's third largest economy of Japan is not doing well. After nearly 30 years of recession, the Japanese yen has lost half of its value against the dollar since 2011 — now set at 151 yen per U.S. dollar. That's up from 72 yen per U.S. dollar 13 years ago.  Japan's Gross Domestic Product languished in 2024, registering only a 0.1% improvement in 2024, much reduced from 2023. Japan's real GDP has not improved since 1992. By contrast, China's real Gross Domestic Product has improved 9-fold since 1992 and the real Gross Domestic Product for the United States has improved 3-fold since 1992.  British Prime Minister willing to put British troops in Ukraine British Prime Minister Keir Stormer issued hawkish comments on the Russia-Ukraine war in an op-ed column published in The Telegraph over the weekend. Stormer said his country is "ready and willing" to put British troops on the ground in the conflict in the interest of "securing a lasting peace in Ukraine that safeguards its sovereignty for the long term.” U.S. State Department officials will be meeting with Russian diplomats in Riyahd, Saudi Arabia today to negotiate the potential end of the war. 16 million Americans between 110 & 369 years old getting SSI checks? Here in the United States, Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency have identified 16 million Americans between ages 110 and 369 receiving checks or multiple checks from the Social Security Administration. Quite bizarre! According to gerontology wiki, there are only 32 living Americans over 110 years of age. In a separate X post, Musk wrote, “There are FAR more ‘eligible' social security numbers than there are citizens in the USA. This might be the biggest fraud in history." First generation immigrants use more welfare than native born citizens The Center for Immigration Studies reported last year that 54% of first generation immigrant households in the United States access welfare programs, compared to 39% of U.S.-born households.   U.S. immigrants who are most dependent on socialism are those from Africa. 46% of these immigrants use three or more welfare programs, 37% of immigrants from South America use three or more welfare programs. But only 27% of Asians and 17% of European immigrants use three or more welfare programs. That compares with 29% of U.S. natives using three or more welfare programs. Numbers 24:22 reads: "You shall have the same law for the stranger and for one from your own country; for I am the Lord your God. ” Trump and Obama at the top of last 5 presidents When Rasmussen asked Americans how they ranked the five most recent presidents, 34% thought Donald Trump was the best, followed closely by Barack Obama at 32%. The remaining three presidents were far behind: Bill Clinton at 12%, George W. Bush at 9%, and Joe Biden is in last place with just 4%. Under Trump, 50-fold decrease in illegal southern border crossings Trump's Border Czar Tom Homan took to X yesterday, informing the U.S. public that border encounters have dropped to 229 as of the last 24 hours.  That's down from 11,000 a day during the heyday of border crossings under the Biden administration. That's a 50-fold decrease!  Also, Homan noted that “Interior arrests by [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] have increased more than 137% under President Trump.  Arrests of aliens with criminal convictions have doubled under President Trump.”  Elon Musk cut $1.2 billion of waste out of Dept. of Education The Department of Government Efficiency, headed by Elon Musk, has just shut down another $373 million of Department of Education DEI training grants.   One of those Diversity, Equity and Inclusion grants was set up to “engage in ongoing learning and self-reflection to confront their own biases and racism, and develop asset-based anti-racist mindsets.” The Department of Government Efficiency already terminated 89 Department of Education contracts amounting to $880 million.  China's Ne Zha 2 pagan movie earned $1.6 billion in 11 days China has now outstripped Hollywood in the major motion picture production business. The animated film Ne Zha 2 has become the highest grossing film in history — now at $1.6 billion after only 11 days of release, reports Variety. The hero in the film is a demon child, who attempts to redefine himself, and determine his own destiny in opposition to the fates.  More pagan worldviews set within an eastern context. Ted Baehr's  MovieGuide, a Christian movie review website, described the original 2019 Ne Zha movie as a film that should be avoided because of its inclusion of intentional blasphemy, evil, gross immorality, and its problematic worldview. Despite its visual appeal, no doubt the second Ne Zha film is just as bad, if not worse morally and theologically speaking, than the first one. Modern-day Jonah story And finally, here's a true Jonah and the whale story!   A kayaker in the Strait of Magellan off the coast of Chile was briefly eaten by a humpback whale, and promptly spit back out. Adrián Simancas's father was close by filming the event. Canada TV contains the whole scene for any viewers interested which we have linked in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. Jonah 3:1-2, 7, 9 reads that “Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish's belly. And he said: ‘I cried out to the Lord because of my affliction, and He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol, I cried, and You heard my voice. … When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord; And my prayer went up to You, into Your holy temple. … Salvation is of the Lord.'  So, the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Tuesday, February 18th in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.
