Registrations for more than 750 beef and pork facilities allowing them to export to China expired on Sunday, leaving questions about market access for U.S. red meat processors. U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) President and CEO Dan Halstrom explains that the pork facility registrations were updated over the weekend, maintaining access for more than $1 billion in product annually, largely pork variety meat. On the beef side, exporters are still waiting for those facility registrations to be renewed, though the pork facility updates are encouraging. The registrations were first issued under the 2020 Phase One Trade Agreement with China and are now reaching their 5-year expiration. The establishment registrations by the China General Administration of Customs (GACC) are needed for product to clear customs upon entry. Beef produced prior to the March 16 expiration is still eligible for shipment to China. Halstrom thanked USDA and USTR for their efforts to resolve this issue, noting facility registration delays are just one example of the many non-tariff trade barriers that often frustrate U.S. exporters.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Plus, EV registrations are rising amid concerns that President Trump will get rid of the IRA tax credit, and lessons learned from the 2025 National Retail Foundation Big Show.Show Notes with links:General Motors has reached a settlement with the FTC over allegations that it sold customer driving data without their consent. The FTC alleged that GM's OnStar service collected precise geolocation and driving behavior data, which was then sold to third parties, including consumer reporting agencies. GM failed to clearly disclose to consumers that it collected and sold this data. The FTC claims that GM's enrollment process for the OnStar Smart Driver feature was "confusing and misleading."GM has discontinued the Smart Driver program and ended its third-party telematics relationships with LexisNexis and Verisk.Under the settlement, GM is banned from disclosing this type of consumer data to consumer reporting agencies for five years. The company will also take steps to provide greater transparency and choice to consumers over the collection, use, and disclosure of their connected vehicle data."Respecting our customers' privacy and earning their trust is deeply important to us," GM said.Electric vehicle registrations saw a significant jump in November as consumers rushed to take advantage of automaker discounts and secure the $7,500 federal tax credit, which may be repealed under President-elect Donald Trump.EV registrations surged 21% year-over-year to 109,120 vehicles in November.Battery-electric vehicles captured 8.3% of the U.S. light-vehicle market, up from 7.4% a year earlier.Automakers, fearing a drop in EV demand if incentives are repealed, offered deep discounts and lease deals.Tesla led the market with 46,225 registrations, while GM brands saw the most growth, particularly Chevrolet. The National Retail Foundation 2025 Big Show in New York brought together tens of thousands of retail professionals to discuss the landscape of shopping, technology, and consumer behavior. Key themes included adaptability, embracing failure, and the growing role of AI-driven dynamic pricing in retail strategies.Best Buy CEO Corie Barry emphasized "adaptability over perfection," noting that retailers must balance both in-store and digital experiences to remain competitive.Amazon's Doug Herrington echoed Jeff Bezos's sentiments on learning to fail, saying, "If you get too good at avoiding failure, innovation becomes nearly impossible."Macy's CEO Tony Spring rejected the idea that department stores are dead, instead calling them a "curated marketplace" that can flex with shifting consumer demand.Target's Rick Gomez praised the resilient, resourceful, and intentional American conHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Shoot us a Text.As we wind down on another week, we're looking at August's EV numbers and the gains by GM. Plus, we talk about the NHTSA's investigation into Full Self Driving, and how Rivian is re-skinning its R1s for spooky season.Show Notes with links:General Motors' latest electric vehicles, combined with Tesla's Cybertruck, significantly contributed to an 18% increase in U.S. EV registrations in August year over year.U.S. EV registrations hit 111,952, accounting for 8.6% of the light-vehicle market, up from 7.5% the previous year.GM's new Equinox EV and Blazer EV made the top 10 EV models, helping Chevrolet place as the #3 EV brand in August, up from #7 in May. Tesla and Ford were #1 and #2.Tesla remains the leader in EV sales but saw its market share drop to 46% as legacy brands like GM, Honda, and Kia close in.Generous leasing offers and incentives are boosting EV sales, although concerns remain about their impact on profitability.“It's basically impossible for Tesla not to lose market share as new EV models stream into the marketplace,” said Ed Kim, AutoPacific's chief analyst. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into 2.4 million Tesla vehicles equipped with Full Self-Driving software after reported crashes in low-visibility conditions. The probe involves Tesla models from 2016-2024, including Model S, X, 3, Y, and the 2023-2024 Cybertruck.Crashes occurred under conditions like sun glare, fog, or airborne dust, with one fatal crash involving a pedestrian.Tesla has a "camera-only" approach to FSD, compared to rivals who use radar and lidar. The investigation adds pressure as Tesla focuses on self-driving technology, robotaxis, and new concepts like the "Cybercab."Tesla has not commented on the investigation.Rivian is bringing some Halloween fun to its R1 vehicles with a set of “Car Costumes,” allowing owners to transform their EVs into iconic movie rides or spooky-themed designs.Owners can choose from "Knight Rider" KITT, the "Back to the Future" Time Machine, or a "Haunted Rivian" costume.Features include themed lighting, sound effects, and interactive display changes.New Halloween-themed modes also include ghostly reskins for drive modes, zombies on pedestrian sensors, and spooky sounds.Rivian's fun-filled update goes live on October 18, offering a whimsical break from the usual serious auto industry.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Herbicides, insecticides and fungicides make up some of the most important tools in a farmer's tool box. And it's up to each one of us to take seriously the responsibilities of being a good steward for those tools, and the environment around us. But recently, the process by which the Environmental Protection Agency regulates pesticides has been challenged in court, on the grounds that it didn't comply with parts of the Endangered Species Act. And so EPA has to build a plan to prove it's in compliance with the ESA, causing potential disruptions for growers. In this episode, we're examining how we got here, what changes growers should expect, how farmers should get prepared, and how groups like the National Corn Growers Association are working with the EPA and other environmental services to minimize the impact on farming operations. Our expert guests include: Megan Dwyer, the Director of Conservation and Nutrient Stewardship for Illinois Corn Stanley Culpepper, an Extension Weed Scientist with the University of Georgia Bill Belzer, the Global Stewardship Director at Corteva This episode is sponsored by Corteva Agriscience.
