Schools and kura could have an important role to play in preventing youth suicide. Coroner Tania Tetitaha's inquiry into the self-inflicted deaths of six young people finds they were effectively lost in a fragmented system. Children's Commissioner Claire Achmad says we need to make sure getting help is as easy as possible at the earliest stages of distress. She told Heather du Plessis-Allan school-based services like counselling and social workers provide a lot of benefits. Achmad says their presence makes them more accessible and more trusted by children and young people. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The self-inflicted deaths of six Northland young people reveals dangerous flaws in our suicide prevention system. An inquiry by Northland Coroner Tania Tetitaha into the deaths calls for a single, coordinated system. The youths had worked with up to 17 agencies - that hadn't seemed to identify or follow up on their need for support. Mindworks psychologist Sara Chatwin told Andrew Dickens we don't need more thinking groups and documentation, but rather people who have the skills and willingness to deal with these issues. She says in New Zealand, we clearly have a huge problem that other countries are very aware of. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The covenantal unfaithfulness of Israel, the Northern Kingdom, has doomed them for God's irrevocable judgement. They are hopeless for deliverance and this is sealed by God's silence towards them. For this reason chapter 8 is one of the saddest prophecies in scripture. It is also one of the most frightening for there is going to be a famine of hearing the word of the Lord. Among other lessons to be learned is that we dare not treat God with contempt by taking his grace for granted. We consider the text under the following headings: 1. An Ominous Silence (vv. 1-3) 2. Justified Silence (vv. 4-6) 3. The Sound of Silence (vv. 7-10) 4. Heaven's Silence (vv. 11-14)

Professional sports was rocked October 23rd when a prominent NBA head coach and a Miami Heat player were arrested as part of two separate illegal gambling investigations, one allegedly connected to organized crime. The ripple effect of these cases underscores that sports betting is not only a concern for the NBA, but extends to other major sports as well as the college ranks. While betting scandals in sports goes back over a century, pro leagues partnering with sports books and casinos combined with the vulnerability of today's youth being able to place bets with the click on a phone creates a frightening landscape.Renowned addiction medicine physician and international speaker Dr. Lipi Roy joins Neil and Vic to speak about the issues, the societal problems and whether the genie can be put back in the bottle, at least in part.IN THIS EPISODE:[03:37] - After some chat about the 16-game Frozen Frenzy, Three Things You Need to Pay Attention to focuses on a legend hitting 1700 points and the first overall pick in 2023 finally appearing to find a comfort zone in the Windy City.[12:51] - Dr. Lipi Roy is welcomed to the show. A decline in work in the central business district results in less foot traffic and consumption for the area, which in turn leads to less business tax revenue that can be used to provide services to the people left behind. When this scenario is played out long enough it creates a feedback loop that reduces the overall quality of life inside the central business district and eventually, it ends in the death of the city. San Francisco is a working model of what a “Doom Loop” looks like in real-time as the central business district is overrun with criminals and drug addicts while the local government enacts insane laws that all but seal the fate of one of America's formerly most beautiful cities. Is there a way to pull out of this situation, or has the feedback loop already kicked into full gear? Based on what has been happening over the past few years, it appears that the city is lost and won't be coming back anytime soon.
