It's a trip down memory lane as Jonathan and James sit down with their former student, John Biegel, who is now serving as the lead pastor at Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church in Annandale, VA. John recently authored a book, Offering and Embracing Christ: The Marrow Theology of John Colquhoun of Leith. Less well known than the famous “marrow man,” Thomas Boston, Conquhoun was a faithful Scottish minister and Calvinist whose life and preaching reflected the thought of the Marrow men on offering and embracing Christ. Colquhoun stands out as being especially indebted to Boston and Erskine and this whole stream of Marrow theology in a way that is unparalleled in the Church of Scotland at the time and really sets up what ends up being this evangelical revival in the Church of Scotland in the early 19th century. – John Biegel  James and Jonathan are justifiably proud of their former student and commend his book to all, but in particular to anyone who feels the tension between the free offer of the gospel and particular atonement.  For the opportunity to win a copy of John's book, thanks to the generosity of our friends at Reformation Heritage Books, enter here.    Show Notes: John recommends the following books by John Colquhoun:  The Covenant of Grace: https://heritagebooks.org/products/the-covenant-of-grace-colquhoun.html A View of Saving Faith: https://a.co/d/4C2HKUl A Treatise on the Law and the Gospel*: https://www.heritagebooks.org/products/a-treatise-on-the-law-and-the-gospel-colquhoun-hardcover.html https://thelawandthegospel.com/Repentance: https://banneroftruth.org/us/store/theology-books/repentance/

This Sunday we'll be looking at the subject of suffering and how to deal wisely with our seasons of pain. As we process the atrocities of the terrorist attacks in Israel, and the many innocent children, women and men who have been killed in Israel and Gaza, it is overwhelming to know what to do, what to think, or how to pray. Qohelet offers us wisdom to think about not just our own suffering, but also the suffering we witness in the world. ** This sermon was co-written by Corey Widmer and Kevin Germer of Christ Presbyterian Church, Richmond Sermon sources: - Philip Ryken, “Why Everything Matters”. Through the detailed exploration of "The Marrow of Modern Divinity," the trial of John Simpson, and the General Assembly's condemnation, we gain insights into the obscured truths brought to light by this controversy. These truths include believers' freedom from the law as the covenant of works, the distinction between the law in the covenant of works and the covenant of grace, the role of the law in the Christian life, the plea for eternal life through Christ's righteousness, and the deed of gift made by the Father to all hearers of the gospel. It is essential to study and understand these truths to deepen our understanding of the gospel and its implications for our lives today. For further reading, Stephen Myers recommends "Christian Walk" by William Van Dudaward and "The Act Concerning the Doctrine of Grace" by the Associate Presbytery. The Morrow controversy continues to shape covenant theology, and its impact can still be seen in theological discussions and debates today.

Thomas Boston (17 March 1676 – 20 May 1732) was a Scottish Presbyterian church leader, theologian and philosopher. Boston was successively schoolmaster at Glencairn, and minister of Simprin in Berwickshire, and Ettrick in Selkirkshire. In addition to his best-known work, The Fourfold State, one of the religious classics of Scotland, he wrote an original little book, The Crook in the Lot, and a learned treatise on the Hebrew points. He also took a leading part in the Courts of the Church in what was known as the "Marrow Controversy," regarding the merits of an English work, The Marrow of Modern Divinity, which he defended against the attacks of the "Moderate" party in the Church. Boston, if unduly introspective, was a man of singular piety and amiability. His autobiography is an interesting record of Scottish life, full of sincerity and tenderness, and not devoid of humorous touches, intentional and otherwise

Can the stony heart but choose to resist the stroke- There is not only an inability-but an enmity and obstinacy in man's will by nature. God knows, O natural man, whether you know it or not, that -you are obstinate, and your neck is an iron sinew, and your brow brass,- Isaiah 48-4, and cannot be overcome-but by him, who has -broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.- Hence, commonly speaking, there is such hard work in converting a sinner. Sometimes he seems to be caught in the net of the gospel- yet quickly he slips away again. Thomas Boston. Human Nature In Its Fourfold State

On Our Bookshelves Every college professor, theologian, and pastor takes on a substantial load of book study in the daily performance of his duties. Most, however, enjoy a bit of leisure reading whenever possible, and our hard-working hosts are no exception. Today Jonathan and James discuss the books each is currently enjoying as time permits in their busy schedules.  Does Jonathan tuck a 10-pound volume on systematic theology in his suitcase, or does he partake of some “lighter” reading on the road? Is James really working through a Harry Potter “classic?” You'll be impressed with the guys' downtime book lists!  You can win one of the books featured in today's discussion: Thomas Boston's Human Nature in its Fourfold State. Why did William Reid promise to give himself up to the authorities as a wanted field preacher? And why did he once preach in church with a loaded pistol hung around his neck? There are other stories of narrow escapes even in his death when he escaped the malice of the leader of the Jacobite troops, Lord George Murray who wanted "to have the old dog's bones to bristle in the flames of his own manse". We can see why Thomas Boston described Reid  as "a worthy man, one of the old sufferers in the persecution". Note: Cover Photograph by Simon Warren. This depicts the Rollo Standard referred to in the podcast episode. It was captured at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge in 1679 by Major Archibald Rollo, 3rd Lord Rollo (d. 1701), who fought for the royalists. It now hangs in the private collection of the home of the present Lord Rollo, who lives near Dunning in Perthshire and is not readily accessible (information from the Scottish Covenanter Memorial Association).

There are no shortages of books, documentaries, and movies that attempt to grapple with the reality of what happened in Salem Village, 1692. Many approaches are admittedly secular and naturalistic, using the historical event to discredit religion, Christianity, or specifically the Puritans. But what is a Christian to think about the Salem Witch Trials? After all, Christians believe witchcraft not only to be real, but also to be a great evil (Exo. 7:11; Lev. 19:31; 20:6; Deut. 18:10-11; 1 Sam. 28:6-25; Acts 16:16-24; 19:17-20; Gal. 5:19-21). Moreover, the Puritans were spiritual giants whose writings have blessed many. John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress, John Owen's Death of Death in the Death of Christ, Herman Witsius's The Lord's Prayer, Thomas Boston's The Crook in the Lot, Thomas Watson's The Doctrine of Repentance, and Richard Sibbs The Bruised Reed are just a few Puritan classics that have blessed Christians for generations. It would be wrong to "throw the baby out with the bathwater." Nevertheless, there are serious lessons to be learned, both negative and positive, from the terrible events of Salem Village, 1692. In this episode, Pastors Brandon and Zac explore this historical occurrence from a Puritan perspective.    For the original source material, see:  A Discourse on the Damned Art of Witchcraft by William Perkins  The Certainty of the Worlds of Spirits by Richard Baxter  Demonology and Theology by Nathaniel Holmes  On Witchcraft by Cotton Mather  The Sermon Notebook of Samuel Parris, 1689-1694

Let's try this again. We recorded about 15 minute of the episode only to realize the microphone was not plugged in! But...here we talk more about the book by Thomas Boston called "The Crook in the Lot." Why is this happening and how should we respond? He gives about 8 or 9 possible reasons for us to consider but than talks about waiting and depending on the providence of God. Before starting, we prayed that this would encourage at least just one person.

Thomas Boston wrote a book based on Ecclesiastes 7:13-14. His writing on suffering, on this crook in the lot - came from his own life's experiences. Honestly, I read this book differently and carefully in light of the background - the immense suffering he and his family faced. He walked through suffering before he wrote about it. In this episode we consider five point on the nature and working of God in the area of suffering. We'll cover some other points from the book in next week's episode.
