Fr. Sergei Sveshnikov grew up in the Soviet Union during the final years of state-sponsored atheism before immigrating to the United States on his own. After some life happenings and lots of revelations, he became an Orthodox priest. A fascinating aspect of his ministry has been in the prisons. We get into what that is and how it compares and contrasts with being a priest in a parish. In this conversation, we discuss life under Soviet atheism, prison ministry, freedom and repentance, the struggle against the passions, fasting, and the challenges facing Christians in the modern world. We also explore technology, artificial intelligence, and what it means to cultivate wisdom in an age overflowing with information. Friend, if you've ever wondered where God is in the middle of your pain, this conversation is for you. This week on the Anchored by the Sword Podcast, I sit down with authors Kristen Wetherell and Sarah Walton to talk about their brand-new book, Jesus Will Meet You There, releasing today, June 9th.Together, Kristen and Sarah share deeply personal stories of chronic illness, suffering, mental health struggles, family challenges, and the lessons they've learned about depending on Christ when life doesn't go according to plan.In a culture that tells us to be stronger, try harder, and handle everything on our own, this conversation offers a different message: God never designed us to be self-sufficient. Instead, our weaknesses, limitations, and struggles often become the very places where we experience the compassion, presence, and strength of Jesus most clearly. We talk about anxiety, depression, chronic illness, spiritual dryness, shame, and the pressure many Christians feel to hide their struggles. Most importantly, we discuss the beautiful truth that Jesus is not disappointed by our weakness. He knows our frame. He remembers that we are dust. And He meets us right where we are.If you're walking through a difficult season, carrying a burden that feels heavy, or simply exhausted from trying to hold everything together, I pray this conversation reminds you that you do not have to carry it alone.Jesus will meet you there. One of my favorite truths from this conversation is this:We spend so much time trying to convince ourselves that we should be stronger, more capable, and less needy. But Scripture tells a different story.God created us with limitations—not to shame us, but to draw us into dependence on Him.Our weakness is not evidence that God has abandoned us.Often, it is the very place where He draws nearest.Friend, whatever you're carrying today, remember this:You do not have to be enough.Jesus already is.Bios:Kristen Wetherell is a pastor's wife, mother, and writer. Fellow Believer Pastor Jeff Weiss, Luke Tibor, Trent Loos welcome Pastor Jon Brueggemann from Thayer County, NE.
I want us to think about someone that I love, as well as something I love, because the something I love is the Word of God, and the someone I love is the Lord Jesus, who is revealed in the Word of God. And today, I want to talk to you about the Jesus of the Old Testament. Would you like to be able to understand the Old Testament? Would you like to get into some of the mystery rooms of the Old Testament? Well, there is a master key that unlocks the doors to the mystery rooms of the Old Testament, and that master key is the Lord Jesus Christ. And, if you will use a Christcentric approach to the Old Testament, it will burst aflame in your hands. As a matter of fact, if you read the Old Testament and you don't find Jesus, then you need to go back and reread it because you missed the message. The Old Testament is a “Him” book. It is about Him. It is about the Lord Jesus Christ. Now, without Jesus, the Old Testament is a book, of unexplained ceremonies. They won't make sense. Without Jesus It is a book of unfulfilled prophecies. And, Without Jesus It is a book of unattainable standards. If you try to live by the Old Testament without the Lord Jesus Christ, then you will not make it. That is what you find in the Old Testament. You'll find all of these laws and ceremonies and practices, and these types, and illustrations. But, as you step back, there He is—Jesus, the Son of God. Jesus is there in portrait. He's the Prophet. He's the Priest. He's the King. And then, you look at the fulfilled prophecies, and you say, “How can this happen apart from divine inspiration?” Click on the link below to hear a message on how the Old Testament says that somebody is coming. The New Testament says that somebody has come. And, the book of the Revelation says that somebody is coming again. And, the New Testament tells you how Jesus, who is coming, gets you ready for His Second Coming, how you can know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord. This is a live recording of The Master's Class Bible Study at LifeChange Church Wichita, KS. Amen.

Ali had been a practicing Muslim in Iran for his entire life. But after the Iranian government violently cracked down on Ali and his friends, he became disillusioned with Islam and moved to America. When Moses stood on a "high mountain" and saw God face-to-face, his first realization was shocking: "Man is nothing." But God didn't leave him there. He revealed a truth that changes everything about how you see yourself and your purpose in this life. Summary: In this episode, we explore the profound "prefaces" to the Bible found in Moses 1 and Abraham 3. We dive into the deep doctrine of our divine identity and the Plan of Salvation. Moses 1: Identity and Discernment. We analyze Moses' encounter with God and his subsequent battle with Satan. We learn how knowing we are sons and daughters of God gives us the power to discern and dismiss the "son of the morning." Moses discovers that even though he is nothing compared to God, he is everything to God—because God's entire "work and glory" is to bring to pass our immortality and eternal life. Abraham 3: The View from Above. We look with Abraham to see the "intelligences" organized before the world was. We explore the concept of "One above another" and the "Great and Noble Ones" who were chosen to lead. The Pre-mortal Council: We recount the moment we all shouted for joy: the decision to follow Jesus Christ and come to earth to be "proved" to see if we would do all things the Lord commanded us. Call-to-Action: Do you ever feel like "nothing" in the vastness of the universe? How does knowing you are a child of God change your perspective today? Share your thoughts in the comments! Most people find the Old Testament confusing, dusty, or even intimidating. But what if it's actually the essential foundation for everything you believe about Jesus Christ? Today, we unlock the "Library of Books" that makes up the first half of our scripture and discover why it is the indispensable foundation of the covenant. Summary: In this introductory lesson, we lay the groundwork for a year-long journey through the Old Testament. We move beyond seeing it as a singular book and begin to view it as a diverse library of 39 books. Key themes include: The Foundation of the Covenant: Understanding why the Old Testament is the root from which the New Testament, Book of Mormon, and Doctrine and Covenants grow. Structure and Organization: A breakdown of the Hebrew Bible (the Tanakh) and its three parts: the Torah (Law), Nevi'im (Prophets), and Ketuvim (Writings). The Power of Translation: Exploring how the Bible moved from Hebrew to Greek to English, and why the Joseph Smith Translation is vital for our study. Finding Christ in the Old Testament: Moving past the "dead letter" to see the "living spirit" of the Messiah on every page. Call-to-Action: Which book of the Old Testament has always felt the most "sealed" to you? Let us know in the comments, and let's commit to opening it together this year!

He's the author of the new course “Finding Christ in the Old Testament.” Watch the video and share your thoughts in the Zion Lab community Links ScriptureCentral.org Scripture Central on YouTube Finding Christ in the Old Testament Newsroom: New Guidance on Bible Translations for Latter-day Saints Handbook: 38.8.40.1 Editions and translations of the Holy Bible YouVersion Bible App page (Apple app here) Keeping Jesus as the Center of Leadership | An Interview with John Hilton III Connecting Others to Jesus Through the Cross at Calvary | An Interview with John Hilton III Bearded Bishops, Rated-R Movies, & the Honor Code | An Interview with John Hilton III Transcript available with the video in the Zion Lab community Highlights In this episode, John discusses the recent changes in the Church’s approach to Bible translations and how these changes can enhance understanding of the scriptures, particularly the Old Testament. The conversation emphasizes the importance of accessibility and comprehension in scripture study. Key Insights The Church’s handbook now states that while members should generally use a preferred or church-published edition of the Bible, other translations may also be used, reflecting a shift towards inclusivity and understanding. Many individuals struggle with the King James Version due to its higher reading level, which can hinder their engagement with the scriptures. Simpler translations can provide clarity and accessibility. Various Bible translations, such as the English Standard Version (ESV) and New International Version (NIV), can help bridge the gap for those who find the King James Version challenging, making the scriptures more relatable and understandable. The discussion highlights the importance of using different translations in teaching settings to enhance comprehension and engagement, particularly for youth and those unfamiliar with the King James Version. Leaders are encouraged to create an inclusive environment in classes where all translations are respected, fostering a space for discussion and learning. Leadership Applications Leaders can promote the use of various Bible translations in their classes to help members better understand scriptural principles, especially for those who may struggle with traditional texts. By being aware of the reading levels of different translations, leaders can guide individuals to resources that suit their comprehension needs, ensuring that everyone can access the teachings of the scriptures. Encouraging open discussions about different translations can help create a welcoming atmosphere in church settings, allowing members to feel comfortable sharing their insights and questions without fear of judgment. 00:02:44 – Guest Introduction: John Hilton III 00:03:26 – Classroom Applications of Bible Translations 00:04:08 – John Hilton’s Projects with Scripture Central 00:04:50 – Changes in Church Handbook Regarding Bible Translations 00:08:34 – Discussion on Handbook Changes 00:14:33 – Historical Context of Bible Translations 00:19:07 – Addressing Concerns About Modern Translations 00:21:18 – Recommendations for Bible Translations 00:24:31 – Using Different Translations for Comprehension 00:26:04 – Importance of Accessible Translations for Youth 00:28:01 – Anticipating Classroom Dynamics with Various Translations 00:30:21 – Creating a Respectful Classroom Environment 00:32:51 – Teaching Strategies for Engaging with Scriptures 00:41:18 – The Role of Listening to Scripture 00:44:10 – Speculation on Future Translations of Church Scriptures 00:47:44 – Encouraging Leaders to Support Comprehension in Others The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints’ mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead. Do you feel emotionally overwhelmed—like you’re carrying more than you can handle and one more hardship or problem might break you? Have stress, anxiety, or burnout caused you to react in ways that don’t feel like you? In this episode of Faith Over Fear, Jennifer Slattery and Carol McCracken talk honestly about emotional overwhelm, emotional capacity, and why prolonged stress and hardship can push even faithful, capable people past their limits. Through personal stories of caregiving, trauma triggers, disrupted sleep, ministry pressure, and relational strain, they explain why “pushing through” often leads to exhaustion, shame, and broken connections. Turning to Scripture, they explore the life of David—a man after God’s own heart—who also experienced seasons of intense fear, grief, and emotional overload. His story shows us that overwhelm is not a spiritual failure and that God meets us with grace, not condemnation, when we’re in survival mode. This conversation offers biblical encouragement and practical tools to help you recognize when your emotional capacity is maxed out, calm anxiety throughout the day, reduce unnecessary stress, and reconnect with Christ’s presence in the middle of overwhelming seasons. If you’ve been feeling worn down, reactive, or ashamed of how you’ve been coping, this episode will remind you: you’re not weak, you’re human—and you’re not alone. Download a free resource designed to help you experience the peace of Christ in Your Most Emotionally Overwhelming Seasons. Reflective/Discussion Questions: Where do you currently feel emotionally overloaded? What circumstances, responsibilities, or unresolved stressors might be adding weight to your “emotional bridge”? How do you typically respond when your emotional capacity is exceeded?Do you tend to withdraw, lash out, numb, overwork, or push through—and what has that response cost you? What stood out to you about David’s responses to overwhelm? How does his honesty with God challenge or free you in the way you pray, lament, or express emotion? Are there stressors in your life that could be reduced, paused, or removed—at least temporarily? What might it look like to honor your limits instead of judging them? What helps calm your body and mind throughout the day?Which practices—movement, rest, prayer, breathing, joy, community—might God be inviting you to return to or begin? Is there an area where shame has followed your past reactions to stress? How does this episode reshape your understanding of God’s grace toward you in survival seasons? Today’s Bible Verse“After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. ‘The Lord has done this for me,’ she said. ‘In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.’” — Luke 1:24–25 (NIV) Advent is a season of waiting, and Elizabeth’s story embodies the kind of waiting that feels long, heavy, and sometimes painful. After years of unfulfilled longing, God quietly begins a miracle in her life. These verses capture both the tenderness of her private joy and the relief of knowing God sees what others do not. Christmas is one of the most magical seasons for families—but in the midst of the bustle of parties, presents, and Pinterest-perfect traditions, how do we ensure our children keep Christ at the center of it all? Catherine sits down with national TV host, actress, and best-selling author Megan Alexander to unwrap a timely question: How do Christian families actually keep Christ central during Christmas? Megan, who has been a familiar face on CBS’s Inside Edition for over two decades and the producer of UPTV’s “Small Town Christmas,” brings her unique insights in her newest book, The True Gifts of Christmas: Unwrapping the Meaning of Our Most Cherished Traditions. This beautiful Advent resource is designed to make celebrating the season both meaningful and manageable—especially for busy parents. Key highlights from the episode include: Reclaiming Christmas Traditions – Megan shares fascinating stories behind beloved customs, revealing their hidden spiritual roots—from the Christian symbolism of candy canes to legends like the poinsettia. Listeners will discover how stockings, Christmas trees, gingerbread cookies, and even bells can point children (and parents!) back to Jesus. Making Christmas Memorable & Manageable – The book isn’t just a devotional, it’s a coffee table conversation starter, filled with vibrant visuals and historical nuggets accessible to all ages. Catherine Segars notes, “It’s not a sermon… it’s an invitation to consider,” making it a perfect gift, even for those who might not identify as Christian but need a positive encounter with Christ. Practical Family Ideas – From flashlight candy cane hunts to placing candles near loved ones’ pictures, Megan shares creative, simple ways to anchor faith in everyday family traditions. Each activity is an opportunity to discuss the deeper meaning behind symbols and stories—turning ordinary moments into spiritual conversations. Honoring Hope and Hardship – The episode thoughtfully addresses the reality that Christmas is not always “roses.” Stories like that of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and the tradition of bells remind listeners that even in grief or difficulty, the hope of the gospel and the presence of Christ remain steadfast. Notable quote:“You’ll never listen to bells the same. People are gathering; God is alive and well. There is hope in this world.” — Megan Alexander Listeners will walk away with: Fresh inspiration to slow down and celebrate Advent with their kids Easy ways to make faith tangible without adding stress to the holiday New eyes to see Christ woven through the fabric of their favorite traditions About the guest:Megan Alexander is a national TV correspondent, producer, and author.
