At the age of 18 he received critical attention from audiences and critics alike when he made his debut feature, My Pure Joy. One to push boundaries, James followed up with the bold and unapologetic Hate Crime which forced audiences along for a brutal home invasion, the first found footage feature ever to be made in the style of having no cuts. The entire film plays out painfully in real time. It was promptly banned in the UK for its fearless story telling, one of three films to be banned in the last 25 years and remains so to this day. Ahead of his time, he then started the To Jennifer series, the first feature film to be shot entirely on the iPhone 5. He produced the next three instalments. The prolific filmmaker refused to slow down completing seven more features including Pernicious, 13-13-13, and Blood Lake, starring Shannen Doherty and Christopher Lloyd, which made James the youngest director to ever direct for television. After writing and directing the haunting Bethany, James shifted his focus to producing. He has now produced forty-eight features including releases for Lionsgate and Cinedigm and is a member of both the PGA and SAG/AFTRA. His impressive body of work has won him numerous Best Picture and Best Director awards on the film festival circuit. James has achieved all this at the age of 29 and refuses to slow down as he continues to push the envelop and make films no one thought possible. His most recent features include Beyond The Law, starring Steven Seagal and DMX along with Survive The Game and Fortress which star Bruce Willis and Chad Michael Murray. He also just completed photography on the feature Hot Seat starring Mel Gibson, Kevin Dillon, Shannen Doherty and Sam Asghari. We live in an era dominated by subjective morality and individualized spirituality. How do we provide biblical, God-honoring responses? Stephanie sits down with Christian apologist and popular YouTuber Melissa Dougherty, who utilizes theological insights alongside her deeply personal experiences to dismantle the seductive façade of the New Thought movement. She describes this philosophy as “a stealthy message of encouragement to live your truth, seek happiness, find your identity through sexual freedom, and think your desires into existence. Often with the name of Jesus attached as an endorsement.” GIWEAWAY COMING UP! In our February newsletter, we will give away THREE copies of "Happy Lies" in partnership with Melissa and her publisher, Zondervan. We will also give 3 copies of our next January book interview (airing January 28, episode 376). So make sure to be signed up to our newsletter for a chance to win. Sign up here: https://www.gospelspice.com/signup In her groundbreaking debut, Happy Lies: How a Movement You (Probably) Never Heard Of Shaped Our Self-Obsessed World, Melissa Dougherty, an ex-New Thought follower herself, deconstructs the myths propagated by secular self-empowerment and affirmation movements. She explains how New Thought concepts like toxic affirmation and the “Law of Attraction” intersect with the prosperity gospel. She highlights how New Thought influences are subtly embedded in progressive Christianity and the gender identity crisis, and even how this movement is foundational to the weakened theology used in “Seeker-friendly” churches. Dougherty urges her audience to reflect deeply on these beliefs, encouraging them to discern contemporary culture's pervasive lies and to seek a more authentic understanding of the gospel. With clarity and a touch of compassionate snark, Melissa examines New Thought's appealing yet distorted spirituality. She warns of its pervasive impact on modern theology, emphasizing how the movement's focus on self-authority and personal experience often overshadows the biblical narrative. New Thought ideology subtly infiltrates contemporary Christian thought, presenting a false gospel that masquerades as a more open-minded, tolerant, and loving interpretation of Jesus and the Bible. Melissa recounts her epiphany during a hiatus from seminary, where her extensive readings unveiled a distinction between "New Thought" and "New Age." Despite their overlaps, these movements stand alone in intent and belief structures. Her desire to educate and spark dialogue about New Thought arose from the absence of evangelical discourse on the topic, with only a handful of scholars like Craig Hazen touching on it. Determined to spotlight this under-discussed issue, she writes a book laden with historical contexts, practical definitions, and a respectful yet critical analysis of New Thought within a Christian framework. Melissa describes New Thought as a metaphysical reinterpretation of Christianity, where the Scriptures are sometimes twisted into allegorical tales akin to self-help doctrines. Melissa coined the term "metamistagorical," combining metaphysical, mystical, and allegorical elements, to describe New Thought. She reflects on how figures like Oprah Winfrey and Joel Osteen intermingle Christian identification with mystical attributes to create a semblance of spiritual alignment. Melissa stresses that while New Thought is frequently confused with New Age philosophies, it poses a unique threat to believers: “New Thought ideas will deceive Christians before New Age ideas ever will. […] You've probably adopted some of its teachings, and you don't even realize it.” Unlike New Age's openly mystical practices, New Thought often acts as a metaphysical Christianity, making its influence sneakier and more deceptive. Dougherty concludes with a heartfelt prayer for her readers: “I hope you can't unsee [New Thought]. I hope it stirs something within you, something refusing to be ignored. Now, go tell others. Tell them the Joyful Truth so they don't fall for Happy Lies. ” In Happy Lies, highly regarded Christian apologist and ex-New Ager Melissa Dougherty . . . Tackles the frustrations surrounding the rise of pop spirituality and “self-actualization,” even within Christianity Exposes the deceptions of New Thought—a movement centered on positive thinking, mental healing, self-worship, and spiritual empowerment Counters subjective, “me”-focused platitudes with objective truths that dispel spiritual confusion and bring peace to anxious minds Provides practical methods to uproot the subtle, mystical, and insidious spiritual beliefs that dilute the core message of Christianity Clarifies how to recognize the misleading spiritual practices infiltrating modern Christianity and reject them to embrace the beauty of an authentic Christian life MORE ABOUT “HAPPY LIES” In this groundbreaking book, popular apologist Melissa Dougherty helps us understand how our society got to be so toxically subjective, why endless positivity is inherently destructive, and how we can live with faithful truth and genuine love in these self-obsessed times. Have you ever wondered how we ended up in a world where personal feelings could become the authority for reality? Or why so many of us are on a relentless pursuit for happiness yet somehow feel more exhausted and sadder than ever? You're not alone. Melissa deftly traces the roots of today's social chaos back to a little-known (but very influential) 1800s philosophy known as New Thought. A former follower of its teachings, Melissa provides clarity and compassion mixed with a dash of loving snark as she exposes New Thought's deceptions and its many concerning tendrils within the church and our "self-help" culture. You'll be shocked, grieved, and encouraged as you learn: How you can experience true freedom, hope, and peace instead of the world's counterfeits How an anti-God ideology so easily hijacked Christian-sounding ideas Why thinking positively is entirely different from the unbiblical and burdensome "positive thought" movement Why fake "authenticity" short-circuits real redemption How understanding the New Thought mindset can help us share our faith more effectively Uncover a dangerous ideology that nearly everyone has met, yet few of us can name, in order to better understand our culture and joyfully live faithful to the gospel that is so much better than our world's Happy Lies. The recent US presidential election was a disturbing spectacle. We saw political professionals and self-appointed “experts” resort to intimidation, shaming, and apocalyptic doom and gloom to manipulate or shame people into voting for their candidate. Scaring or shaming someone into voting a certain way is a condescending and immature strategy that will always backfire because no one likes to be treated like a child by being frightened or tricked into doing things. This is typical of dictators like Nicolás Maduro, Fidel and Raúl Castro, Kim Jong Un, and Vladimir Putin— all on the left— or Adolf Hitler and the Ayatollahs of Iran on the right. Any politician who does not know how to persuade people with respect, integrity, and intelligent arguments and who has to resort instead to fear and intimidation to win votes is unworthy of leading any country, party, or company. Pop, rap, and R&B singers, as well as disturbed actors like Robert de Niro, Oprah Winfrey, and Whoopi Goldberg, made complete fools of themselves by loudly threatening Nazism, dictatorship, and the end of the world if people didn't vote the way they wanted. Sadly, this kind of political deceit is used in every continent and every political party. So, it is time to think about fatalism or catastrophism as a strategy for gaining or maintaining power. The short and brilliant text I present to you today was written by Andrew Torba, a man who gave up his easy and luxurious life in Silicon Valley to create the digital platform gab.com after seeing how Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google, and LinkedIn only promoted the posts and accounts of those who aligned with their political, social, or sexual sympathies. The gab.com platform aims to facilitate free speech for all (even those we do not want to associate with) and the parallel economy in the US. Visit gab.com and decide for yourself (I will not scare, manipulate, or shame you into doing so). Through Ezekiel, God spoke to Israel in Babylonian captivity, "What do you mean when you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, And the children's teeth are set on edge'? ”As I live,” says the Lord GOD, “you shall no longer use this proverb in Israel." (Ezekiel 18:2-3) This proverb is pernicious, and we should avoid its message as well.
If you've been anywhere along the California coast, you've seen it—ice plant. It's a low, spreading succulent with finger-like leaves and bright pink or yellow flowers. Given its prevalence on our shorelines, you might assume ice plant is meant to be there. But it's actually an invasive species that threatens native plants and wildlife. This week on the show, producer Pauline Bartolone digs into the effects of this pretty pest, and some other herbaceous interlopers. In 2012, the University of Miami philosopher Colin McGinn was accused of sexual harassment by a graduate student. When the matter became public, Pinker wrote in an open letter that McGinn was a “brilliant and distinguished scholar” and that if the University of Miami pursued disciplinary action against McGinn for “exchanging sexual banter with a graduate student,” it would “put a chill on communication between faculty and graduate students and on the openness and informality on which scholarship depends.” In our conversation, Pinker often brings up “The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature,” which, even two decades after its release, illustrates core aspects of his thinking today. It's the beginning of summer and camps are in full swing. But camps aren't just for kids, are they? This week, your TSHE hosts are imagining what their ideal adult summer camps would be. Some activities we brainstormed: come and go macrame, lots of swimming, comfortable beds, lots of alone time, a theater production, and a big final dance! Our mileages may vary, but this is beginning to sound like a plan! In small talk, Bobby tries it so you don't have to (occasionally featuring Ann), Hillary continues her movie journey with Rory, and Meredith has some sad news (RIP sweet Wonky!). Dr. Tim and Dr. Johnny finally prove you CAN see the future... sort of. In this conversation with researchers Dr. Jamil Maroun and Dr. Christopher Christopher Tienken about their recent study, revealing how socioeconomic factors can eerily predict the outcomes of standardized tests. Their insights challenge the very foundation of these assessments, sparking a necessary debate on the role they play in our education system. As the discussion unfolds, the Doctors walk through the methodology and findings of this groundbreaking research, shedding light on the systemic biases that permeate standardized testing. These guys don't just offer criticism, however; this research offers a beacon of hope by exploring alternative assessment methods that promise a more equitable future for all students. Dr. Slecker and Dr. Lupinacci skillfully navigate the conversation, making complex research accessible and engaging for all. They also highlight the real-world implications for educators and students alike, providing a clear call to action for those looking to make a difference. Learn for about our guests: Dr. Jamil Maroun, superintendent of Manville School District, New Jersey, began his career as an educator in 2005 by serving as a Social Studies teacher at Sayreville War Memorial High School. In 2013, he began his administrative career as the Supervisor of Science, Social Studies, and Library/Media Services in the North Plainfield School District. During his time in North Plainfield, he worked with his colleagues to evaluate and revamp the various curriculums that he oversaw, develop AP-level courses, partner with RVCC to establish Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships, and navigated the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards. Christopher Tienken, Ed.D. is an associate professor of leadership, management, and policy and education consultant. He has public school administration experience as a PK-12 assistant superintendent, middle school principal, director of curriculum and instruction, and elementary school assistant principal. He began his career in education as an elementary school teacher. Tienken is currently the editor of the American Association of School Administrators Journal of Scholarship and Practice and the Kappa Delta Pi Record.
When you sow seeds in the right soil and the right conditions are present, your seed has the potential to yield and bear much fruit. What happens when you've sown the right seed, in the right soil, and an enemy comes to plant insidious seeds next to you in an attempt for your harvest to be ruined? What do you do? This episode addresses what Jesus told us to do. Remain encouraged and understand that the Predatory Pernicious Planter is no match for the power of Jesus working in you, with you, and through you.
A conversation with political scientist and Carnegie scholar Jennifer McCoy about the increasing political dissension in America.
In the aftermath of David's victory over the giant of Gath there were two markedly different responses. In 1 Samuel 18:1-4, Jonathan responds with love. In 1 Samuel 18:5-16, Saul responds with jealousy and envy. What is the source of Saul's envy, but more importantly, what is the effect of Saul's envy? What can we learn from Saul about killing envy in our own hearts?
Leaders often believe false media headlines about people working two remote jobs, despite the evidence showing that the percentage of workers with multiple jobs is currently at a historic low. For the fourth episode of the Culture Study podcast I'm joined by Philip Maciak — who manages to be a professor, the television critic for The New Republic, and an avid consumer of children's television — to talk about Paw Patrol. We talk about copaganda, plot laziness, why 90% of the characters are boys, how Paw Patrol gets “in the water” at most kids' schools even if they don't actually watch the show, and take arguably too deep of a dive into the theme song. If you hate Paw Patrol, this episode is for you. If you're annoyed by its banality, this episode is for you. Even if you've never heard of it, it's a really fascinating exploration into why so much kids media turns out the way it does. If you like the episode, it is SO HELPFUL for our fledging pod if you can share it with others. Send it to your nerdy friend or parent who'd love it. Post it on social media. This week, we're looking for your questions for future episodes about: Celebrity Philanthropies (weird ones, good ones, why do they exist, etc.); Moms for Liberty; Very Contemporary Architecture Trends (like ‘modern farmhouse'); Why Goodreads is the way it is (think expansively here); ONLINE PURCHASE REVIEW CULTURE (as in: what motivates people to leave reviews? With photos? What makes a good review, what makes a worthless one?); Whatever Bradley Cooper's whole deal is.You can submit them (and ideas for future eps) here. This is a public episode. Al Qaeda's attacks on the United States plunged America into multiple military campaigns abroad in pursuit of the attackers. It also ushered in new surveillance programs before any investigations into the causes of the 9/11 intelligence failure had even begun. The first new, secret mass electronic surveillance program authorized by then president George W. Bush, Stellar Wind, was initiated just days after the attacks and with no judicial notification, much less review, as required by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). In a parallel public track, the Bush administration pushed for and received even more sweeping surveillance authorities via the congressionally approved Patriot Act. By the end of the Bush presidency, the FBI had been granted vast new domestic surveillance powers, gaining authority to open investigations on individuals or groups without needing a criminal basis to do so.The Obama era was marked not by reevaluations of these programs but instead by their continuity and political normalization. The Stellar Wind program was made nominally lawful through the passage of the FISA Amendments Act of 2008. And after National Security Agency contractor‐turned‐whistleblower Edward Snowden revealed in 2013 secret mass surveillance of Americans' phone calls under Section 215 of the Patriot Act, Congress passed the USA Freedom Act ostensibly to partially curtail that program. Yet subsequent oversight actions and investigations would find that neither the Stellar Wind program nor the Section 215 telephone metadata surveillance program had stopped a single attack on the United States, all the while accumulating vast reams of information on innocent Americans.Have officials in the executive branch and Congress learned anything from these mistakes and overreaches? How many other surveillance programs and authorities that potentially threaten the privacy and even constitutional rights of Americans have yet to be subjected to meaningful oversight? Our panel will explore these and related issues Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The Supreme Court is expected this month to make a major ruling on affirmative action. To understand the case, we sat down with Kenny Xu, an insider in the lawsuit and president of Color Us United. He is the author of “An Inconvenient Minority” and the upcoming book “School of Woke.”We also discuss his recent investigations into the dumbing down of academic standards, the protection of sexual predators if they espouse diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) ideology, and the spread of DEI ideology in medical schools.“Medical schools across America are basically advocating that you stop abiding by the Hippocratic Oath and that you start administering preferential care,” Xu says.

Dennis Prager, founder of Prager U, discusses the “pernicious,” “woke garbage” being exported from the United States. The conservative thoughtleader says, "America is for the first time in its history, and there were so many firsts in American history, we are exporting pernicious ideas. America was the source of sending out good ideas for all of its history, it is now sending out worse ideas.” Saying that it is not the European socialist abyss that is exporting the ideas anymore, saying "they don't send these ideas out from France, or Germany, or Denmark, it's out from America, and it starts at the universities, then it goes to California, then it goes to the world.” Commenting that with "having said all these things, every one of which is valid and true, fortunately, we are also the home of the only organized conservative opposition to evil in the world. So you have the most productive left in America and you also have the most productive right in America, and we are in a civil war. I wrote this 20 years ago, I hope pray it stays nonviolent. Nevertheless, it is a civil war. The the North and South had more in common during the civil war than the right and left, we have nothing in common, I share nothing with leftists. If they say it is raining, my assumption is it's sunny."See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
