Brian Thompson chats with human rights advocate and Brave Space Alliance CEO Channyn Lynne Parker. Channyn is a public speaker whose accolades include the inaugural Trans100 award, Henrietta Lacks award, and Equality Illinois Freedom Award. As CEO of Brave Space Alliance, Channyn shepherds the first Black-led, trans-led TLGBQ+ center on the south side of Chicago. On the episode, Channyn shares her journey to becoming the CEO of Brave Space Alliance and the significance of finding alignment in life. She also reveals why the nursery rhyme “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” is deeper than you might think. Episode Highlights Mission-driven businesses are laser-focused. According to Channyn, a mission-driven business is focused on what it does best. For Brave Space Alliance, that means meeting the needs of Black TLGBQ+ individuals through the four pillars of dignity: health, housing, food, and identity. “A mission-driven business is one that is laser-focused on what we do well: to provide our constituents the greatest impact in the area of their interests and needs,” Channyn said. “Above all, we give people a safe space to be in -- or a brave space to be in, if you will.” Brave discomfort to live your purpose. When Channyn was tasked with the role of CEO of Brave Space Alliance, she initially felt like the lead of the 1980s film Gloria in which a cantankerous woman gets stuck with a young kid and has to unexpectedly take on the role of the mother. While she described the transition to CEO as “jolting” and “averse,” she has grown to love the job and the responsibility. “I love comfort, and I believe that humans are comfort-seeking machines,” Channyn said. “None of us want to be jarred out of our comfort zones, but the reality is that unless we seek or welcome challenges, we will stagnate, we will atrophy, and we will not live out the thing that we are meant to contribute to the world.” Profit can include time, talent, and treasure. Running a business, even a nonprofit like Brave Space Alliance, requires money. But Channyn reminded listeners that profit can come in non-monetary forms, too. “When I think about the intangibles of profit, it is your stakeholder satisfaction and community impact,” Channyn said. “But also I think about the gifts of time, talent, and treasure, so all of your stakeholders who believe in your mission feel they're able to contribute to the sustainability of the mission.” Live life gently and authentically. Channyn believes there is a gap in the world that every one of us has been brought here to fill if we can become acutely and unapologetically aware of who we are and what it is we want to be. And if you don't believe her, just listen to the song “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” “The deepest song ever is ‘Row, Row, Row Your Boat,'” Channyn said. “Rowing is living, right? The stream is life, and gently means you're not fighting against who you are. We're meant to live this vessel gently as we flow down the stream of life.” Resources + Links Brave Space Alliance: Website, Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok Channyn Lynne Parker: LinkedIn Brian Thompson Financial: Website, Newsletter, Podcast Follow Brian Thompson Online: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Forbes About Brian and the Mission Driven Business Podcast Brian Thompson, JD/CFP, is a tax attorney and certified financial planner who specializes in providing comprehensive financial planning to LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs who run mission-driven businesses. In this episode we talk to Feroz, a decolonial marxist feminist and political organizer. She shares with us some moments from the rich history of gender diverse peoples and radical organizing. We talk to her about the contributions of Marsha P Johnson, Silvia Rivera, the Gay Liberation Front, and STAR and the connections between the TLGBQ movement and other organizations. We discuss different struggles for trans people and non binary folks within organizing spaces historically, and questions of different models of queer and trans organizing. We discuss the relationships between white supremacy, colonialism and the gender binary. We talk about coalitions of solidarity, and the historical and ongoing struggles to create the conditions for trans liberation. We also get into white fears of decolonization, white betrayal of working class comrades, and the material and stake of white supremacy and settler colonialism in contrast with the genocidal and geocidal historical trajectory of whiteness.
Brayden Asher Misiolek is of co-founder/ Executive Director of Transcend the Binary, an organization that seeks to empower the transgender and gender non-conforming community through access to affirming care, resources, research, and education. Recently Brayden joined other members of the TLGBQ community and allies to speak out against continued efforts against T/GNC individuals.Brayden dedicates his service to Transcend the Binary in honor of the organization's co-Founder Darnell Jones saying “I made a promise to Darnell, and my community, to make sure that Transcend continues to grow – from our resources, program quality, research and understanding of our community The current administration has rescinded antidiscrimination protections for transgender students, reversed a Bureau of Prisons policy that would take gender identity into account in housing assignments, attempted to ban transgender service members from the military and argued that transgender workers are not covered by Title VII protections against discrimination in the workplace. A leaked HHS memo proposes defining an individual’s sex as “a person’s status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth,” and that “the sex listed on a person’s birth certificate, as originally issued, shall constitute definitive proof of a person’s sex unless rebutted by reliable genetic evidence.” Transcend the Binary staff are available for those seeking services such as hormone counseling, medical referrals, youth and family support, fitness and nutrition counseling, and more – all of which are provided free of charge.
In this episode I speak with writer, activist, and academic Yasmin Nair, who is highly critical of liberal narratives of "diversity" and TLGBQ+ "inclusion" inside of violent and imperialist institutions like the US military. Recently, Nair co-wrote a piece with Eli Massey which gave a radical left and queer critique of the mainstream push for trans inclusion in the military, and that serves as the basis for our discussion. Then, we discuss the intentional erasing of the legacy of radical queer anti-capitalist/anti-imperialist organizing, the problematic nature of reactionary gay politics like "legalize gay" and how they serve a white/capitalist class. Finally, we discuss the book "Against Equality", which she co-wrote.
@ethehustla comes in and opens up about the trans and TLGBQ+* community and discusses how pronouns, identity and society’s approach to the topic must be relearned.
On the season finale of Keeping it Queer, prominent Transgender activist Gauri Sawant, opens up about: Why she had to leave her family behind. The creative ways she likes to abuse.
