Guest Teacher Jazz McKinney celebrates C3's Pride Sunday with their teaching Liberation Through Fluidity: The Power of Seeing Beyond Binaries.
27 As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is no longer Jew or Greek; there is no longer slave or free; there is no longer male and female, for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. ~Galatians 3:27-28 This week, we celebrate PRIDE Sunday. While there are passages in the Bible that have been used to “clobber” our LGBTQIA+ siblings, there are also beautiful verses like the ones above that invite us to consider how the family of faith grows as God continues to speak to us. Paul writes to the church in Galatia about the inclusion of people not of Jewish faith in the early church. “There is no longer Jew or Greek,” he writes, challenging the binaries we impose on people. In 2025, our call to be an inclusive family of faith continues to grow as we listen to our still-speaking God, especially our growing need to affirm our LGBTQIA+ siblings. On Sunday, we will read Paul's passionate plea for inclusivity as we reflect on what it means for First Congregational Church to be an increasingly inclusive and affirming family of faith.
"You're either with us, or you're against us." False binaries tell us that there are only two possible outcomes when many different outcomes may be available to us, and we use them all the time to structure how we understand our world. Is this hurting our dating culture? In this episode, Megan and Steven discuss what false binaries are, how they show up in dating conversations, and how to interrogate your own to get to the root of what you actually want. In this unforgettable Full Frontal of What's Your Position, we sit down with the incomparable Jessica Lynn—international speaker, educator, and trans rights advocate whose personal story has changed laws, hearts, and minds around the world. With raw vulnerability and unapologetic brilliance, Jessica opens up about her decades-long fight for truth, identity, and justice—including her high-profile custody battle that became a lightning rod in the global conversation around transgender rights. We explore her evolution from a life lived in hiding to one of radical visibility, and how her scientific knowledge, emotional intelligence, and deep compassion have made her one of the most sought-after voices in gender education today. Fewer than 30% of trans adults over 50 say they have strong support systems. Jessica is changing that—one conversation, one courtroom, and one country at a time. This episode is honest, intimate, and full of the kind of truth that lingers long after the mic goes off. Whether you're questioning, learning, or unlearning, Jessica's story will move you to think deeper, love harder, and show up louder. Check out her website here: Jessica's Website

We talk a lot about — and when I say 'we,' I mean the wider queer community — how upsetting it is that queer bars and clubs are closing at an accelerated rate. But I think the bigger tragedy is the disappearance of queer cafés.And maybe it's wrong to pit them against each other, but queer cafés offer that beautiful intermediate step. They're not as full-on or intimidating as a bar or a club, and they're places where you can just be. There's no pressure to perform, no need to match the thump of a bassline — just you, your overpriced oat flat white, and the comforting hum of conversations that sound a little more like home. One of the absolute best queer cafés that ever existed — and I won't hear any counterarguments — was First Out Café in Central London. Before it closed in 2011 to make way for yet another railway construction project, it was a sanctuary. A place where you could nervously nurse a tea while pretending to read the free gay magazines that used to exist, all the while sneaking glances at the other queers who had found refuge there too. It's also where today's guest, drag king extraordinaire Mr Wesley Dykes, took his first tentative steps into queerdom. Growing up between Lagos and South London, Wesley navigated the complexities of identity, family expectations, and self-acceptance. And when that weight felt a little too heavy, First Out Café was there — offering a cup of tea and the reassuring presence of a community.Other episodes about First Out Cafe'The First Gay Place That I Went Inside...' - with Alex Iantaffi from Gender Stories PodcastFirst Out Cafe, London (with Ali Brumfitt)Follow meInstagram: www.instagram.com/lostspacespodFacebook: www.facebook.com/lostspacespodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@lostspacespodSign up to the Queer Word newsletter: https://queer-word.beehiiv.com/subscribeSupport meBuy Me A Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/lostspacespodFollow my guestInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mrwesleydykes/

This conversation delves into the representation of Gotham City as a text, exploring its origins, meanings, and the semiotic analysis of its imagery. Dan, Richard, and John discuss the historical context of the term 'Gotham', its connections to urban design, and the dualities present in its narrative, particularly through the lens of Batman. They examine the architectural symbolism of Gotham, the role of myths and archetypes, and how these elements reflect societal fears and cultural codes. This conversation delves into the semiotic analysis of Gotham and the character of Batman, exploring how narratives reflect and critique capitalism and ideology. The discussion highlights the evolution of Batman's character from a simplistic hero to a complex figure grappling with moral ambiguity and psychological struggles. We also examine the cultural significance of urban environments and the authenticity of narratives within them, ultimately connecting these themes to broader societal reflections and the role of pop culture in shaping our understanding of the world. Gotham's name originates from a folk tale about fools. Semiotics helps decode the meanings behind signs. The imagery of Gotham is dark and layered. Binaries of good and evil are central to Gotham's narrative. Myths and archetypes play a significant role in storytelling. Gotham reflects societal fears and corruption. The architecture of Gotham symbolizes its dual nature. Light and dark imagery are crucial in Gotham's representation. Cultural codes shape our understanding of symbols. Gothic elements in Gotham connect to historical narratives. Roland Barthes' levels of signification help us understand meaning. Gotham's narrative naturalizes capitalism through Batman's wealth. The ideological critique of capitalism is often masked in narratives. Batman evolves from a simplistic hero to a morally ambiguous figure. Cultural reflections in media reveal societal anxieties and psychopathy. Authenticity in urban narratives is tied to historical context. Semiotics allows us to decode the meanings behind cultural symbols. Pop culture serves as a mirror reflecting contemporary issues. Understanding the language of semiotics enhances cultural analysis. Today we have a special show for fund drive co hosted by feminist Queer activists Kate Raphael and Rae Abileah who will talk to Jewish Feminist Queer author, scholar and activist Judith Butler about two topics they have become famous for reshaping and making part of everyday discourse, that is gender and anti-zionism . If somehow you are one of the few people who haven't heard of American philosopher, gender studies scholar and anti zionist and Queer feminist activist Judith Butler they have written over a dozen books including their seminal book Gender Trouble which came out in 1990 and which shook up the academic and political world with her redefinition of gender. and they have been have been a major influence on political philosophy, ethics, and the fields of third-wave feminism,[2] queer theory,[3] and literary theory, and if they wasn't enough they are also important to anti zionist activist and Queer activists since to many in these movements they are a huge force in support of these movements. for Butler's concept of gender as having been constructed they have been seen as a threat throughout the modern world — to national security in Russia; to civilization, according to the Vatican; to the American traditional family; to protecting children from pedophilia and grooming, according to some conservatives and by Zionist they are excoriated as a defender of Hamas terrorism and banned from Israel. And to interview Judith Butler we are very lucky to have two experienced Queer activists, novelist, journalist, anarcha/feminist and queer activist and a long-time producer with KPFA's Women's Magazine Kate Raphael is co housing with social change strategist and ordained Jewish faith leader Rae Abileah and they will be leading our conversation with Judith Butler today . In the first half of the interview Kate Raphael will talk to Butler about their newest book on gender “Whose Afraid of Gender” that looks at the right wings utilization of gender to attack Queers, trans people and women. And in the second half of the show Rae will talk with Butler about her book “Parting Ways Jewishness and the Critique of Zionism” that came out in 2013 as well as her thoughts about anti-zionism today. The post Judith Butler – Challenging the right, gender binaries and Israeli settler colonialism appeared first on KPFA.

Tiffany Thompson is a unique human being. She's driven by curiosity, and that's going to come shining through in our conversation today. Tiffany weaves the analytic rigor of her early career as a CIA analyst with the explorative creativity of her recording artist career. So, to say she wears multiples hats or weaves multiple identities is probably an understatement. She is the founder and CEO of Artistic Leadership, which is a creative consultancy that uses the power of art to unlock creativity and connection. Creativity and connection are really what today's conversation is all about. How can you use a spark of curiosity to improve your ability to innovate, to create, to build something? That is really at the core of Tiffany's positioning, of her communication, of everything that she stands for. Tiffany had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “I would consider the CIA to be a very creative and artistic place” (6:50). “People choose to work [at the CIA] because they're driven by mission” (7:10). “As an artist [at the CIA], I felt encouraged to explore the things I was curious about” (7:20). “I have always been somebody who loved creating with my friends” (13:40). “To have a lifelong friendship, you have to let it change” (20:10). “I'm never afraid of being the friend who leads the friendship. I actually find that to be an honor” (22:50). “Let's not hide the broken fractures, let's actually accentuate them” (28:40). “When we're in fix it mode, it's about speed and getting something done” (30:55). “When you shift into mending, curiosity really becomes that tool for understanding what it is you're trying to create” (31:10). “Binaries are rarely helpful, or perhaps real” (35:10). “At its core, [art] is a process” (36:25). “Novelty is such a powerful stimulant for our brain” (50:15). “We're not going to succeed alone. We're going to have to work together” (53:25). “Part of being an artist is being a steward of your art form” (57:55). “Discipline, to me, has two parts: it has commitment, and it has craft” (1:00:40). “Craft is a word heavy with intention” (1:01:40). This episode of The New Abnormal podcast features the renowned futurist and speculative designer, Monika Bielskyte. She's also the founder of Protopia Futures, a life-centric design and collaborative foresight platform that centres previously marginalised perspectives. The project's mission is to inspire a new wave of future visions showcasing how a transcultural and interdisciplinary approach, alongside disability and neurodivergence inclusion, can foster regenerative economies for the decades to come and chart an actionable path towards a positively interdependent and compassionate future world. Her work is firmly anchored in contextual, complex realities on the ground, rather than one-size-fits-all techno-solutionism, prone to short-term hype cycles and rapid obsolescence. As a speculative designer, Monika prototypes culturally expansive, socially and environmentally engaged future world designs that take lessons from visually and narratively captivating Science Fiction entertainment and apply them to make real-world future literacy more compelling. She's a deeply interesting individual, so I found it fascinating listening to her viewpoints and hope you do too!
Today we are replaying one of our most popular episodes from last year with Jeremy Giffon. I spend all my time trying to find people who have some “singularity” to them. People who seem like they can do an N of 1 something. Having spent many days with Jeremy, he strikes me as one of those people. He was the first employee and general partner at private equity firm/holding company Tiny, which buys and holds internet and technology-focused businesses. Prior to that, he was on the founding team of MediaCore, which was acquired by Workday. The distracting suffocating binary of enough and not enough in regards to our activism The present-traumatic stress caused by over-consuming media How there is no one-right way and to believe and assert on others that there is one right way to think, to be, to act right now may be a perpetuation of domination and separation The inquiry: “how can I expect to steward- from my dysregulated nervous system- a New Earth that's wholly different from the one built by dysregulated nervous systems?” The inquiry: “how can I- and we- be influences of change in the world without perpetuating colonial cultures of separation and domination?” The inquiry: “how can I expect to disrupt the cycles of trauma and fear when I'm acting from my trauma and fear?” Her desire to normalize when and what we don't actually know…and to open to the possibilities of connection and healing in that unknown. In this thought-provoking episode, I dive into the societal trend of individualizing responsibility, especially when it comes to substances like alcohol and tobacco. Why do we often place the burden on individuals rather than addressing the collective impact of these substances? Join the conversation as I explore the need for a paradigm shift in our approach to responsibility, extending beyond personal blame to foster a healthier society. Share your thoughts in the comments and let's work towards a more informed and compassionate perspective together. How do we find black holes? And how can we tell whether it's a small black hole “eating” really fast or a large black hole that's eating very slowly? To find out, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome astrophysicist Dr. Vivienne Baldassare, a professor of astronomy and physics at Washington State University. As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing, the recently published composite photo of the X-ray Binary System in nearby starburst galaxy NGC_4214. Vivienne explains how X-ray Binaries, which are relatively rare, are created by a stellar mass black hole or a neutron star being fed by a star. Chuck and Vivienne discuss the differences between using the new James Webb Space Telescope and “old tech” like the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and how she uses Chandra to find black holes. Professor Baldassare explains how she uses x-ray observations, optical spectroscopy, and variability data to find intermediate-mass black holes, which she is one of the first astronomers to find. You'll hear about the differences between stellar mass black holes, supermassive black holes, and the intermediate-mass back holes that fit somewhere between. Then it's time for our first student question, from Lorenzo, who asks, “Are stars only found in galaxies, and if not, where else?” Vivienne explains that most stars are found in galaxies, but they can also be found in globular clusters. There are also hyper-velocity stars, which can be found in the halo of our galaxy on their way to escape our galaxy entirely. A discussion of the Chandra X-ray Observatory, which spends about 80% of its time outside the Van Allen belts, turns into a discussion about all the manmade objects orbiting the Earth, including Chandra, Hubble, satellites... and lots of space junk, too. We've currently got about 8,000 satellites orbiting Earth – a surprising amount of which are SpaceX Starlink satellites, with more “satellite constellations” planned by SpaceX and others. You'll find out about the risk of chain-reaction debris collisions due to solar storms and other disruptive events, Kessler Syndrome, the environmental consequences of mostly-aluminum satellites burning up in our atmosphere, and the first fine every levied for space junk, against Dish Network. For our next student question, Adrian wants to know how tiny black holes can swallow super giant stars? Vivienne explains how tidal disruption, when the gravity on one side of an object is greater than on the other side, can pull a star apart in months or even weeks! Finally, Vivienne talks about being an ultra-marathon runner and a trail runner, hiking with her dog, and the importance of being able to go out to wild spaces in nature. Chuck gets here to share a favorite hiking memory – a 7-day, long distance solo hike around Mt. Blanc after presenting her work at a conference in France. If you'd like to know more about Dr. Baldassare, you can follow her on Twitter @vbaldassare, Instagram @vbaldassare, or her website which includes her email for you to reach out to her and ask her more questions. A riveting and dynamic conversation about love, community and complexity with the phenomenal Kai Cheng Thom! We hear about her act of prayer in a collapsing world: FALLING BACK IN LOVE WITH BEING HUMAN, a book of poems and rituals for connecting with the unlovable in ourselves and others. Kai Cheng shares about her early experiences with being conscious of consciousness, daydreaming and intentionally projecting self into another world, and wondering, 'is this the real reality?'. A thread of nonbinaristic thinking weaves throughout the episode. We hear about led Kai Cheng to writing her most recent essay, The Village and The Woods, a venture into inquiring about a problem with no name. This essay explores the anatomy of the cycle of social panic: how community, initially a place of refuge, can turn more and more horrifying; the seductive urge to raise ourselves “above” and maintain that above status, even (especially?) in social justice communities; the importance of going more slowly and resisting the urge to dive into that swift right/wrong pattern. Can we really tell the story, slowly understand all of the different threads of what happened? What are the extenuating factors? Recognizing that abuse is about power, Kai Cheng offers a meta and a micro example of how we can train our sense perceptions to hold onto multiple threads in a story and hopefully gain a holistic understanding of what's going on. Holding onto complexity - which can be difficult with activation and trauma - and tending to our own nervous systems and the collective nervous system, especially involves the responsibility held by the bystanders, and the capacity for nuance. That egregious harm is real, that the monster/innocent binary doesn't allow us to address different grades of harm, and that we all deserve to be able to say “I am hurt right now, I was let down, and I need community,” and be met with support. We transition back to poetry, and being in touch with the wild divine. Kai Cheng reads Leia's favorite poem from the book (and, perhaps, favorite poem ever), To Jesus. We muse on the beauty and power of ritual and symbolic action, and on personal relationships with the divine. Bio: Kai Cheng Thom, MSW, MSc, is a certified Somatic Sex Educator, Qualified Mediator, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Certified Professional Coach based in tkaronto/Toronto. She is also the author of six award-winning books in various genres, including the recently released poetry and self-help collection Falling Back In Love With Being Human. Kai Cheng's work focuses on the intersection of social justice, pleasure activism, and transformative approaches to healing conflict. Welcome to the first of a WONDERFUL four-part mini series with guest Christian Kimball, author of the beautiful book “Living on the Inside of the Edge”. In today's episode Chris and Val will focus on the topic of how prone we as Latter Day Saints (as are others in early stage spiritual and psychological development) are to think in BINARIES: good/bad, right/wrong, in/out. Their invitation is to break out of binary-thinking and begin to see your relationship with the church on your own terms, emphasizing that your relationship with your current spiritual practice WILL CHANGE, because our life's experiences change us all. In Friday's episode Val and Chris focus on finally *truly* growing up in our relationship with the church! This episode digs into the concept of obtaining a differentiated [read: adult-to -adult] relationship with the church and how this adult-to-adult dynamic might look on the ground in real life relationships, especially with your bishop. Some well-known binary star systems are in good view as night falls. Antares, the heart of the scorpion, is due south. Blue-white Spica is at about the same height in the southwest. And Polaris, the pole star, stands due north, just as it does every night of the year. Many of the other stars visible to the naked eye are binaries as well — two stars that orbit each other, bound by their mutual gravitational pull. In fact, binaries are quite common. But astronomers aren't sure just how common. One study put the fraction of stars that are in binaries at about half. But others have come up with higher numbers. Binaries probably are born in the same way as single stars — from the collapse of giant clouds of gas and dust. As the cloud gets especially tight, though, it splits apart. That creates two newborn stars — and sometimes three, four, or even more. Most of the biggest and heaviest stars have binary companions. Binaries are less common among stars that are roughly the mass of the Sun. And they're least common among the smallest and faintest of stars, known as red dwarfs. Because they're so puny, they're hard to study, so we're not sure just how likely they are to be members of binaries. But red dwarfs account for most of the stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. So zeroing in on that likelihood will give us a better idea of just how many stars have companions — and how many travel through the galaxy alone. My guest today is Jeremy Giffon. I spend all my time trying to find people who have some “singularity” to them. People who seem like they can do an N of 1 something. Having spent many days with Jeremy recently, he strikes me as one of those people. He was the first employee and general partner at private equity firm, Tiny, which buys and holds internet and technology focused businesses. Prior to that, he was on the founding team of MediaCore, which was acquired by Workday. The focus of our discussion is about esoteric opportunities that exist in private markets. How misaligned incentives and co-ordination problems create special situations for people like Jeremy to invest in. The rest of the conversation is wide-ranging and covers everything from compensation advice to meeting your heroes. Please enjoy my discussion with Jeremy Giffon. Green Dreamer: Sustainability and Regeneration From Ideas to Life
For Green Dreamer's 400th episode, we welcome Anand Giridhardas, a writer and journalist whose books include The Persuaders: At the Front Lines of the Fight for Hearts, Minds, and Democracy (2022), Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World (2018), The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas (2014), and India Calling: An Intimate Portrait of a Nation's Remaking (2011). A former foreign correspondent and columnist for The New York Times for more than a decade, Anand has also written for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and Time, and is the publisher of the newsletter The Ink. Spanning themes of philanthropy, political change, and social media, Anand unsettles the assumptions of “win-win” social change. How does the rise of elite philanthropy and plutocratic “do-gooding” coincide with the hoarding of power? We look at how in an age of bifurcated American politics, many people fighting for social change face burnout or have given up. Accordingly, Anand calls for the need to stay with the art of persuasion and simultaneous calling-in and calling-out—digging deeper into the political spectrum rather than simplifying people's complex humanity into binaries.
