In light of his passing on February 15, 2025, we honour David Parsons with two tracks from “Yatra” and his final album, “Portal,” which provided a heartfelt sonic embodiment of the land and its people in the unique blend of Western technology and Eastern music. In this episode of Better Buildings for Humans, Joe Menchefski is joined by Dr. Douglas Milburn, co-founder and chairman of Advanced Glazings Ltd and inventor of Solera® and SoleraWall®. Doug shares his journey from his background in physics and solar energy research to founding a company focused on translucent glazing solutions that bridge insulation with natural light. Joe and Doug discuss the power of facades not only as protective barriers but as essential connectors to the outside world. They dive into how translucent glazing can create vibrant, daylight-filled spaces without the glare or energy loss associated with traditional glass. Doug explains his philosophy of "conspicuous green," advocating for green technologies that enhance, rather than restrict, the human experience within buildings. From public arenas to office spaces, Doug explores how ideal translucent glazing can transform environments, fostering comfort, productivity, and well-being. They also discuss the impact of natural light on mental health, retail environments, and the unique challenges and benefits of creating well-lit educational spaces. Tune in to learn more about Doug's vision for sustainable, human-centered building design and the role of light in creating better spaces for people to live, work, and play. About Doug Milburn As a long-time entrepreneur and innovator, Dr. Doug Milburn thrives on solving problems. Throughout his leadership, Dr. Milburn has aimed to create great workplaces by shaping a company's success through corporate values and ethical guidelines. Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada, , Dr. Milburn earned his undergraduate and Master's degree in physics at Mount Allison University, before finishing his studies with a PhD in mechanical engineering at the University of Waterloo. In 1995, Dr. Milburn and his wife Michelle co-founded Advanced Glazings, which developed and manufactures SOLERA light diffusing glass, which enables architects to create beautifully daylighted buildings that are incredibly energy efficient. In 2001, Dr. Milburn co-founded Protocase with Steve Lilley. After a young drummer commits the crime of “creativity without a license,” her bandmate discovers a way to protect her and all other unlicensed artists.  Genre: Science Fiction   Excerpt: “Tell me, as the band's leader, what is the future of Discordance now? Will you find a new drummer? Will you disband and follow individual careers? The fans are dying to know.” Kavita seen herself in interviews dozens of times before, and she'd felt many different emotions at seeing herself. Mortification, dissatisfaction, pride, amusement. This time she felt only anxiety. But it wasn't the anxiety of what had already happened. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 27, 2024 is: translucent • trans-LOO-sunt • adjective Translucent describes something that is not completely clear or transparent but is clear enough to allow light to pass through. // They admired the translucent gemstones on the display at the museum. See the entry > Examples: "What you want to buy are dry scallops, which have never been soaked or treated. Dry scallops are visually distinguishable from their wet counterparts: Their cylindrical edges are more clearly defined, while the firm meat has a moist sheen and looks almost translucent." — Tim Cebula, The Portland (Maine) Press Herald, 14 Jan. 2024 Did you know? Let's shine a light on translucent and a couple of its relatives. Look closely and you will see the same group of three letters in translucent, elucidate, and lucid, illuminating the family relationship between the three words. All descend from the Latin word lucēre, meaning "to shine." Translucent is from lucēre plus trans-, which means "through"—hence, something translucent allows light to pass through. To elucidate something is to metaphorically shine a light on it by explaining it clearly; a lucid person is able to think clearly, and lucid writing is easy to understand. We hope this light explainer helps clarify things.

On tonight's Queer Voices, we speak with Allison Mathis, a candidate for 338th Judicial District Court Judge of Harris County. She is a native Houstonian who grew up in Spring Branch. When she was a teenager, she watched her brilliant, funny aunt struggle with a crack cocaine addiction that destroyed her life and sent her in and out of prison for years. She also watched several friends lose their bright futures due to their entanglement in the legal system due to non-violent drug offenses. She worked her way through a bachelor's degree in English at UH-Downtown as a coffee shop waitress, which was perfect for her because she loved books, coffee, and serving people. She went on to get a master's degree in Literature, but realized that as much as she loved reading and teaching, she could not escape the overwhelming feeling that she needed to do something involving the broken criminal justice system. She went to South Texas College of Law and graduated cum laude in 2012. We speak with Allison her race to become judge and why criminal justice is important to the LGBTQ community Then we speak with Destiny Smith a transgender theater actor based in Houston. Destiny graduated from Lamar University with a BS in Theater and Dance and now works fulltime as the Lighting Programmer and Technician at Stages Theater. We speak with Destiny about “Translucent”, a Queer Theater she is working to bring to Houston. You can see Destiny's brilliant work in current productions at Stages Theater. Finally we speak Nora Hahn who is starring as Ann Richards in the Garden Theater's production of “Ann”. This inspiring and hilarious play brings us face to face with a complex, colorful and captivating character bigger than the state from which she hailed. Written by Emmy Award winner Holland Taylor, Ann takes a revealing look at the impassioned woman who enriched the lives of her followers, friends and family. “Ann” runs February 2-11 at MATCH.Queer Voices airs in Houston Texas on 90.1FM KPFT and is heard as a podcast here. Warm inside an all-weather coat. Facing out across the water. Sat, boots wedged against the top ridge of the slanted seawall. There's rain in the air. Thirty minutes to take in this wild estuary place, you tell yourself.  Right of scene the small Essex town of Burnham-on-Crouch. Directly ahead across the water Wallasea Island. Low lying. A vegetated slip of green land and an RSPB nature reserve. Left of scene wild swirling water stretches seven miles to the North Sea. Sit tight, here on the seawall. This is empty time, to listen to the landscape. Wind from the east flattens the inflowing tide. Presses down the surface into shallow shifting wavelets. Translucent wavelets, that wash briskly along the concrete footings of the seawall. As time passes, and so very slowly, a warm hum slides into view. Harmonious. Reassuring. It's a ship. A ship approaching. Gradually, it draws level. Gradually, it crosses your line of view. Then, with clear water ahead it increases power. On a heading out to sea.  This landscape is sparse. Beautiful. Bleak. Ektachrome bleak.  * This is the very last segment of an amazing overnight recording the Lento box captured several years ago from the seawall just east of Burnham-on-Crouch. When we came back to collect the box it was waterlogged and we feared the whole recording was lost. Somehow it survived which makes all the episodes captured from this incredibly exposed location extra special. What are your options when your tech stack is bursting at the seams? You're struggling to get visibility over what's happening. You're balancing multiple spreadsheets and you're spending a lot of time consolidating data.    If you are trying to resolving your business's data overwhelm there are a number of options:   Spring cleans all the files, and all the data.  Merge duplicates and expunge old data, and trim down the data files.    Call in the professionals: Engage a professional cloud integrator to review your set up and advice of any efficiency opportunities.   Multi Entity Consolidation solution : I work with the Fathom team and they have a multi-entity financial reporting tool to help you compare and consolidate your organisations.   A new solution on the market that you may not have heard of is Translucent.io who I've recently started working with. It turns your existing single-entity accounting system into a multi-entity accounting solution. You connect your existing accounting software (Xero, QBO, etc.) and Translucent consolidates all your data to create a single financial system of record. Translucent Apps provide workflows for your muli-entity needs, such as searching for transactions at group level, creating consolidated reporting, managing intercompany transactions, live connecting your data to spreadsheets, and more apps being released every quarter.    While you may not have heard of Translucent before, it is likely that you heard of Dext, or Receipt Bank. The founder and good friend of mine, Michael Woods is the founder of Translucent.io and he's built it as a tool he would have liked when running Receipt Bank.    A fourth option here is to migrate to an ERP solution. This is something you can potentially explore with a Cloud Integrator about or speak with a software consulting specialist. As you start to move into this area, you really want to engage an experienced specialist who can give you an unbiased assessment of your options to help you know what is possible, and suggest options to future proof your business.   Each option has a different price point, and it's important to understand the scoping, implementation, training, maintenance and ongoing costs involved. Likewise make an assessment of how many hours a solution will save you once implemented, and will it enable your business to scale.  You can get CPE for this and other episodes of the Cloud Stories podcast. Today's guest is genuinely one of my favorite people to talk to, as we are kindred spirits in so many ways. This became even more abundantly clear on this week's episode of The Red Light Report, as Dr. Chris Motley and I both agreed to join forces on a special red light therapy project (that I am incredibly excited about!). This manifested completely out of thin air and was 100% impromptu during the middle of our conversation. If you are a longtime TRLR listener, you likely recognize this name, as he was a guest back in September '21, where we cover some fascinating topics: frequency therapy, dry needling vs. acupuncture, emotions related to specific organs, light/energy/resonance and so much more! I highly recommend going back and listening to our first conversation -- the link to that episode is in the show notes below. As a quick review, Dr. Chris Motley is a doctor of chiropractic, is credentialed in acupuncture, is a highly respected expert in Chinese Medicine and Frequency Medicine and also has certifications in Chiro + Plus Kinesiology (CPK) and Neuro Emotional Technique. With his wealth of knowledge, he is a presenter at symposiums and is also a podcast co-host on Dr. Josh Axe's, Ancient Health Podcast. Dr. Motley also announced that he is now beginning a membership where you can join and learn from him in a more intimate setting and garner more of his amazing holistic knowledge and skillset. I highly recommend checking his membership out  — I know I will!During our conversation today, Dr. Motley goes into some interesting and highly-engaging Chinese and frequency medicine and topics, such as how we can best transition our bodies and organs out of the slower, recovering mode of the winter season and into the reawakening and growing process of the spring season. He even walks through some hands-on techniques for self-treatment to help facilitate this process.  It felt like this conversation went by in a couple of minutes and Dr. Motley and I could've easily talked for hours longer. However, I am always grateful for his time and the wisdom he is impassioned to share with anyone and everyone that is interested in improving their many aspects of health holistically. Enjoy learning from Dr. Motley and, as always, light up your health! - Dr. Mike Belkowski and Dr. Chris Motley discuss the following:  Intro: (0:16) What's new in his life: (2:57) His interactive membership: (6:12) Avoiding burnout: (8:22) Overworking: (10:31)  Chinese medicine and living by its rules: (12:12) Transitioning into spring out of winter: (15:01) How to know when Chinese medicine is working: (19:01) Being in tune with your body: (21:25)  Emotions tied to the gall bladder: (22:32) Negative gall bladder health and how it manifests in the body: (23:40) Releasing anger: (25:00) Cupping specific areas of the body: (29:03) How hard to press on pressure points: (31:17) Dry needling: (32:46) Taking your health into your own hands (36:48) Red light therapy and Chinese medicine: (39:54) Red light therapy and dry needling: (44:45) Fusing old-age knowledge with new-age technology: (45:58) Translucent needles that can transfer light: (46:59) Acupuncture on a consistent basis for maintaining health and wellness: (49:41) How oral health affects overall wellness: (52:21) - Watch this on YouTube - Listen to our previous conversation from the episode in September 2021, "Energy & Emotions, Frequency Therapy & Acupuncture vs. Dry Needling w/ Dr. Christopher Motley"Apple Podcasts Spotify - Where to Learn More From & About Dr. Chris Motley:   Find him on social media: Instagram @DoctorMotley Facebook @DoctorMotley   Go to his website: DoctorMotley.com - Check out BioLight's new, cutting-edge full-body product: The Adapt System - Save 20% via BioLight Bundles all year long! - Check out the Kindle version of Red Light Therapy Treatment Protocols eBook, 4th Edition - To learn more about red light therapy and shop for the highest-quality red light therapy products, visit https://www.biolight.shop - Stay up-to-date on social media: Instagram

The book explores a twofold journey of understanding her gender identity as a woman, but also as a daughter of God. Learning to overcome her natural man through social and medical transition, but more importantly with obedience, trusting God, following spiritual promptings, and always staying on the covenant path. The book covers her early years, marriage, family, and divorce. A mixture of experiences with Priesthood leadership. Her years giving hugs at General Conference. How she came to bear her testimony in over 40 wards in 3 years. Getting involved in BYU Women's Conference and as a volunteer for Time Out For Women. Entering the LDS Singles scene attempting to find love again at church dances and firesides. And the riveting conclusion of when she miraculously did. I encourage listeners to listen to Katherine's story. I was deeply moved listening to Katherine—it's a story that helps us better support each other and extend the stakes of Zion. Thank you, Katherine, for being on the podcast. Your work is so needed in our community. Over the December break, marami tayong topics na hindi napagusapan. Hot topic na naman, but we need to talk about it.
