On this week's Modern Retail Podcast, senior reporters Melissa Daniels and Gabriela Barkho discuss the acquisition of sanitizer brand Touchland. The startup was bought by Church & Dwight, the personal care group that owns Nair and Arm & Hammer, in an $880 million deal. The staff also discusses the rise and fall of Target in the past couple of years, with the retailer marred by pullback in consumer spending and boycotts. In this episode, Daniels and Barkho also welcome Michelle Gabe (18:40), the director of marketing and partnerships at IFG, the parent company of King's Hawaiian, Grillo's Pickles, and Killer Brownie. Gabe joins the show to discuss what goes into brands' collaborations with entertainment franchises and other pop culture moments, especially in film and television. The trend was kicked into high gear during 2023's summer of “Barbie,” when brands of all sizes went pink. Last year, a similar wave was brought on by the “Wicked” movie. Even prestige TV series are getting in on product tie-ins through brand collaborations, as this past season of “White Lotus” showed. During her previous role at truffle sauce startup Truff, Gabe helped bring these types of partnerships to life, such as a collectibles collaboration with the “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which garnered a waitlist of 20,000. Here is what she had to say about the best way to approach major IP tie-ins.

In March 2020, when the world went into lockdown to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, poets and friends Marilyn Hacker and Karthika Nair—living mere miles from each other, but separated by circumstance, and spurred by this strange time—began a correspondence in verse. ‘Renga', an ancient Japanese form of collaborative poetry, is comprised of alternating ‘Tanka', beginning with the themes of ‘Toki' and ‘Toza': this season, this session. Here, from the “plague spring”, through a year in which seasons are marked by the waxing and waning of the virus, Hacker and Nair's Renga charts the “differents and sames” of a now-shared experience. Their poems witness a time of suspension in which some things, somehow, press on relentlessly, in which solidarity persists—even thrives—in the face of a strange new kind of isolation. Between “ten thousand, yes, minutes of Bones”, there's cancer and chemotherapy and the aches of an ageing body. There is grief for the loss of friends nearby and concern for loved ones in the United States, Lebanon, and India. And there is a deep sense of shared humanity, where we all are “mere atoms of water, each captained by protons of hydrogen, hurtling earthward.” At turns poignant and playful, the seasons and sessions of A Different Distance display the compassionate, collective wisdom of two women witnessing a singular moment in history. Karthika Nair will be in conversation with Prem Panicker. An audience Q&A session will follow. Presented by: Contxt In this episode of BIC Talks, Karthika Nair will be in conversation with Prem Panicker .This is an excerpt from a conversation that took place in the BIC premises in January 2025. Co-hosts Michael LeBlanc and Steve Dennis return from ShopTalk brimming with insights on the rapidly shifting retail environment. They kick off by breaking down the rollercoaster of consumer confidence, spurred by persistent inflation and ongoing uncertainty. The conversation touches on potential reverberations from looming tariffs that could drive up costs and shake consumer sentiment. Headlines from major brands paint a mixed picture: Lululemon's cautious optimism contrasts with H&M's ongoing struggle to redefine its place in fast fashion, while Dollar Tree's dramatic divestment of Family Dollar underscores the perils of poorly integrated acquisitions. Meanwhile, Chewy's robust earnings provide a bright spot. Also fueling industry chatter is the arrival of French department store Printemps in Lower Manhattan, sparking excitement among those who see it as a bold venture amid broader department store decline. The conversation pivots to Canada's retail landscape, where Hudson's Bay's long-anticipated liquidation underscores the challenges legacy retailers face in a hyper-competitive era. The second half of the show features a conversation with Lowe's SVP Product and Technology, Data and AI, Chandhu Nair, who outlines the home improvement retailer's sweeping digital transformation. Aware that their category historically lagged in technology adoption, Lowe's has accelerated its efforts, focusing on delivering customer-centric solutions while modernizing decades-old infrastructure. With the newly launched MyLow application, shoppers can receive instant project advice, seamless product recommendations, and integrated how-to guidance. For professionals, speed, in-stock reliability, and tailored credit remain top priorities.Nair emphasizes that data and AI make up only 30% of the equation, with the remaining 70% tied to organizational change and process reengineering. The discussion highlights Lowe's approach to fostering innovation: start small, iterate quickly, and focus on core customer needs rather than novelty for novelty's sake. In addition, immersive experiences such as the Lowe's Style Studio for Apple Vision Pro build on years of research and strategic experimentation. By proactively partnering with leading tech companies and harnessing new capabilities like generative AI, Lowe's aims to stand out in a competitive retail market. Ultimately, Nair's insights underscore a cultural shift where failing responsibly is integral to success, and where the ability to adapt quickly defines a retailer's future. About ChandhuAs senior vice president, data, artificial intelligence and innovation, Chandhu Nair leads Lowe's AI transformation office, data and analytics, and AI products and platforms teams. He also leads Lowe's Innovation Labs, focusing on emerging technologies and technology investments, and is responsible for the technology enabling marketing, Lowe's Media Network, personalization and loyalty experiences. Today's guest has a fascinating story and weight loss transformation and his reason for it was very interesting as you'll hear. While this is a wide ranging conversation, our central theme in this talk is how to find the right lifestyle for you after 45 and the big pillars that contribute to it. Dr. Derek Alessi, Ph.D became interested in the field of fitness training at an early age when he was an obese teenager. Determined to change his health, body and ultimately his future, he began strength training and developed a system to modify his nutrition. Derek dropped over 80-pounds in one year and later that same year, he entered his first and only body building contest. Disenchanted with the way body building tends to minimize health and well-being in order to encourage raw size, he left that arena and dedicated his career to helping individuals achieve better health and wellness through a program of planned exercise and practical nutrition. At the age of 19, Derek passed a national fitness certification exam and began his career in personal fitness training. He furthered his quest for more information through education and received post-graduate degrees in health and physical education as well as a master's degree in nutrition. Dr. Derek is the author of The Bermuda Triangle Diet (October, 2009 Strategic Publishing), Lose Fat Forever (2003), and The Promise Health and Fitness System (2002 ). Derek has earned a doctorate degree in health and physical education and a master's degree in nutrition. He is also a National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) trainer. He owns and operates Dr. Derek Health & Fitness, a private practice, a personal training facility for adults in East Amherst New York. He has appeared on over 2100-TV and 400-radio programs throughout the country and has been featured in national print media including Maxim, Burn Fitness for Women and Iron-Man Magazines. Dr. Derek is a health, fitness and lifestyle contributor for the USA Today and the host of weekly TV show on NBC Cleveland & NBC in Buffalo, New York called Live It Fit Now! In addition, Dr. Derek conducts regular health and fitness seminars for the health care industry, Fortune 1000 companies, and small businesses where he combines his unique brand of humor, empathy and knowledge to communicate his positive, affirming message: Make the Most of Your Life… Live It Fit!™ Time Stamps: (2:40) Losing 80 Pounds To Be A Dentist (6:15) Nair and Finding Competing Wasn't For Him (11:10) Opinion on GLP-1's (13:20) Biggest Mindset Shift (21:40) First Steps For Weight Loss (22:38) The Right Diet (25:05) True Keto Salad Dressing (34:05) The Right Exercise (37:00) Training Heavy In Midlife and Beyond (42:10) Women vs Men (53:16) Choosing Your Curious (54:10) Where To Find Strength Genesis and Dr. Derek -------------------- Strength Genesis - My affiliate link: https://strengthgenesis.com?sca_ref=8302855.oUM0WRDjy5yg https://alessifit.com/ https://www.instagram.com/alessifitness/ -------------------- Slim Stomach Solution Program: https://www.carolcovino.com/slim-stomach-solution/ -------------------- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carolcovinofitness/ -------------------- My YouTube Channel: http://youtube.com/@carolcovinofitness

On today's episode, I'm speaking with the wonderful Preethi Nair—an author, entrepreneur, and storyteller with an incredible journey into publishing.Preethi left her career as a management consultant to pursue her dream of writing, but after facing multiple rejections from publishers, she took matters into her own hands. She set up her own publishing company, took on a secret identity as a publicist, and successfully got her debut novel Gypsy Masala a whole load of press and attention. Her creative marketing and perseverance led to a three-book deal with HarperCollins, and she has since gone on to inspire countless aspiring writers with her story. In this episode, we talk about her novel Unravelling, a beautifully written story about family, love, and self-discovery. We also explore the deeper themes of identity, resilience, and the unconventional path she took to bring her books into the world. This episode features an interview between Bill Pfeifer and Ananta Nair, Artificial Intelligence Engineer at Dell Technologies, where she leads AI and ML software initiatives for large enterprises. Ananta discusses differences between human learning and AI models, highlighting the complexities and limitations of current AI technologies. She also touches on the potential and challenges of AI in edge computing, emphasizing the importance of building efficient, scalable, and business-focused models. --------Key Quotes:“It's very hard to take these AI structures and say that they can do all of these very complex things that humans can do, when they're architecturally designed very differently. I'm a big fan of biologically inspired, not biologically accurate.”“Do you really need AGI for a lot of real world applications? No, you don't want that. Do you want some really complex system where you have no idea what you're doing, where you're pouring all this money in and you know, you're not really getting the results that you want? No, you want something very simple outcomes razor approach, make it as simple as possible, scalable, can adapt, can measure for all of your business metrics” “We have reached a point where you can do the most with AI models with minimal compute than ever. And so I think that is very exciting. I think we have reached a point where you have very capable models that you can deploy at the edge and I think there's a lot of stuff happening in that realm.”--------Timestamps: (01:20) How Ananta got started in tech and neuroscience(04:59) Human learning vs AI learning(15:11) Explaining dynamical systems (26:57) Exploring AI agents and human behavior(30:43) Edge computing and AI models(32:58) Advancements in AI model efficiency--------Sponsor:Edge solutions are unlocking data-driven insights for leading organizations. On this fan-service episode of Fashion People, Lauren is joined by Sunita Kumar Nair, author of CBK: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy: A Life in Fashion. They discuss how the former Calvin Klein publicist—who died in a plane crash alongside husband John F. Kennedy Jr. when they were 33 and 38, respectively—became a legitimate style icon (a description that should be reserved for only a handful of people in history). They also discuss CBK's impact on the American fashion industry in the 1990s (it was big, hello Narciso Rodriguez) and how Nair, a creative director and stylist, ended up writing the book on one of Gen X's most watched women.
