I talked with Kylar Gardner about selling info products on Amazon. This is the business of eCommerce, episode one Oh eight, welcome to the business of eCommerce, the show that helps eCommerce retailers start, launch and grow their eCommerce business. I'm your host, Charles [inaudible] and I'm here today with Kylar gardener. Kyler has published more than 35 books in Amazon writing and designing many of them herself. She's currently traveling full time as a digital nomad and working on our first novel. I asked her in the show today to talk about selling info products on Amazon. So hi Kyla, how are you doing today? Kyla: 00:41 I'm good. Thanks for having me. How are you? Charles: 00:43 Yeah. Awesome to have you on the show. I love I love talking to retailers and I don't know if you'd call yourself a retailer. Good folks kind of out there selling and doing things. It's always kind of interesting to really get by, you know, the tactics and someone who's actually doing it today. So super excited for this. Yeah, me too. So you, so currently you publish 35 bucks on Amazon, right? And these are all under, are they under your name or the under different names of, what do you typically do? Kyla: 01:12 They're all under fake names and quite a few different fake names as well because I batch them by the niche or the genre they're in. So they're mostly nonfiction. They're pretty short around seven to 15,000 words and they come in all different formats. I sell eBooks, paperbacks, hardcovers and audio books. Charles: 01:36 Okay, thank you. So I need to unpack this a little and the whole digital nomad things. There's a lot here and this is super interesting. So first nonfiction, why, why are you publishing nonfiction under and what's the terminal? Is there a different term when you say someone else's name? Like a made up Kyla: 01:53 A pseudonym? Yeah. Or a pen name. Yeah, Charles: 01:56 Pen name. Why would you publish nonfiction under a pen name? Kyla: 02:01 So I, when I started it, I just, I was just doing it for the money. I just wanted to see if I could make a buck on Amazon. And I wasn't saying like this is, you know, a topic that I want to be known for as a writer myself. I just want to see if I can put it out there and it gets a good response. So that's been my tactic. Charles: 02:23 So you didn't want us, so, so it sounds like if it didn't do so you have a background in journalism, right? It's kind of, okay. So it sounds like if it didn't do well it was a complete flop. You wanted to just say wasn't me. Kyla: 02:36 Right. Yeah. So yeah. But then if it's successful, I also can't really take credit for it. So it's kind of a double edged sword there.

Kylar W. Broadus is an attorney, activist, public speaker, and former professor. He is the founder of the Trans People of Color Coalition (TPOCC). Trans People of Color Coalition exists to advance justice for all trans people of color by amplifying trans stories, supporting leadership, and challenging issues of racism, transphobia, and transmisogyny, After he announced his gender transition while working at a major financial institution, he was “constructively discharged.” When he lost his job, he thought that there MUST be laws that protect individuals when they are discriminated against. After filing a lawsuit in federal court, though, he learned quickly that transgender people weren’t covered under any discrimination laws. This propelled him to want to make sure that there were laws that protected others in the transgender community as well as gender non-conforming people of color. In 2012 Kylar made history by becoming the first openly transgender person to testify before the U.S. Senate. He was speaking on behalf of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. He was awarded the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s Sue J. Hyde Award for Longevity in the Movement and the Pioneer Award at the Transfaith of Color Conference presented by the Freedom Center of Social Justice. He has served on the boards of the National Black Justice Coalition, the National Stonewall Democrats, is a founding board member of a national think tank, The Transgender Law and Policy Institute.
Craig, Ryan, and Stephanie discuss The Way of Shadows, the first of the Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks. This is the first of two episodes on the book, and this one is mostly spent discussing the primary and secondary characters. Is Momma K a role model? Are we meant to like Durzo Blint? Is Elene a satisfying match for Kylar? We'll get to even more in part 2 of our discussion, set for release in a couple weeks. Thanks for listening. Today, we are bringing you a guest we had on several seasons ago—Jared Arms, Founder and CEO of Kylar.io. We recently ran into Jared out and about at one of our incubators and as he was beginning to tell us all about the wonderful things happening for him and his company. We said “STOP” don’t tell us anymore—We want you to update our listeners so they can share in the progress and good news! As a reminder when we first chatted with Jared on this show, we learned about his background and how his mother, who sacrificed food and rent to buy him a computer at the age of 5, set him on his path to technological success. In his teen years, after seeing so many of his friends being killed, he used his interest and technological gift to develop a web-based way for folks to memorialize the dearly departed. In his 20’s, Jared then went on to create and launch his company, kylar.io, after identifying untapped problems within underserved communities and providing tech-based solutions. Jared and his company has been recognized as one of Android’s top app developers. In 2014, Jared launched kylar.io for Kids, to provide the best summer tech experience for children—instilling enthusiasm in STEM learning while all the while sparking their interest in related careers. To date, over 3,000 students have benefits from this great program! In this episode are going to learn more about what Jared has been up to and all the great things happening to kylar.io. We will also be speaking with Freddie Mosley from Lincoln Middle School and he’ll give us insights into the impact that the Kylar for Kids program is having with his students.. so stay listening…

Entrepreneurs are driven to identify and solve problems. In the entrepreneurial ecosystem it’s called the “pain” point of customers. Shay Gillespie and Jared Arms created their businesses out of distinctly different sources of personal pain. Coincidentally, each had a passion and focus to improve opportunities for African-American children in the technology sector with coding and programming instruction. Shay, the founder and owner of “Color Coded Kids” knows the impact of technology on a global scale and from a corporate vantage place, while Jared, at just 23 years old, founded “Kylar for Kids” and entered into the IT space from a very different and unlikely point of origin. Shay needed a practical and accessible source for IT instruction for her young son and discovered most of the mothers she knew shared that need. Jared got started while responded to the pain of losing friends and loved ones to gun violence. Each of them stumbled onto very viable answers to a common community need—access to resources and information. Both now have not only created opportunities for themselves, they have changed the landscape for generations to come. This is not an average conversation.
