This week, Sean plays the "I moved and have no internet game" so Paul got to play the "nothing is working right game" while Jon resumed his "I feel sleepy" game.In reality, Jon revisits some gems of the past such as Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie, Contra: The Alien Wars and Time Slip. Paul, in the meantime, enjoys some Abyss Odyssey, starts a descent into madness trying a Dark Souls 2 "Deathless" run and enjoys some free-to-play business in Firefall, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Phantoms and Velvet Sundown. In news, Resident Evil REmake gets a... REmake? Twitch pisses their userbase off and a bunch of cool games are announced (including a port of Bioshock to iOS devices!). We answer a bunch of questions, ramble on about random talking points and slowly show our true colors. All this, and more, on this episode of the Top Down Perspective!
Two man show this week with Jon and Nathan. Jon gives us the run-down on a trial run of the zombie apocalypse before jumping in on Rusty's Real Deal Baseball, Picross e4 and the latest from the team that brought you Far Cry 3, a JRPG with poetic dialogue called Child of Light (who'da guessed it?). Nathan FINALLY played that copy of Pikmin 3 he borrowed from Sean last year and started raging with the angriest six-armed deity in gaming in Asura's WrathThen its news time with more Direct-style info from Nintendo, digital Kevin Spacey (his face doesn't move right), a new Kickstarter from Harmonix that may actually be worth a look, hot new Vitas, insane budgets, depressing mergers, all that and a mountain of YOUR questions on this week's Top Down Perspective!
Sean is back and has FINALLY conquered Bravely Default. Jon, meanwhile, has become trapped in an endless time loop, playing it for all eternity. Will he escape? Tune in next week to find out. Sean also checked out Half Brick's latest, Bear vs Art and has begun playing the new entry in the Professor Layton series. And something called Oqonie? Sounds weird. Jon also began playing the latest Donkey Kong Country while Nathan played much of Remember Me in a single sitting, dabbled with Jack Lumber (which used to have the tagline "Trees Suck") and that game Threes? Well, its on Android so he acknowledges that he can't stop playing it compulsively (the new Tiny Tower maybe?)News mostly consists of a couple game release announcements, but the new initiative by Amazon to stream games to your home is probably the most noteworthy story. All that and a pretty hefty barrel of questions on this weeks Top Down Perspective! Review us on iTunes if you'd so like and feel free to ask us some questions next week. Thanks for listening.
Just Jon and Nathan (JoNathan) this week as Sean takes to the skies to visit his homeland. Jon talks some Bravely Default and his favoritest game of yesteryear, Payday 2. Nathan tries to compare the adventure games of the east versus those of the west, centering on Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward and the latest episode of Telltale's Walking Dead, "A House Divided". Over in news, Batman is back (already?), Jack "Not as tough as Reggie" Tretton steps down from CEO of SCEA, we know exactly when Watch_Dogs is coming out and Amy Hennig of Uncharted fame leaves Naughty Dog rather abruptly. And, of course, we talk at length about Shaquille O'Neal's latest venture in the world of video-games over at Indigogo. All that and your questions on this, the latest episode of Top Down Perspective. Review us on iTunes. If you'd like. You don't have to. But it would be cool.
Sean is away on vacation so Nathan and Jon talk about the games they played for an EXCEEDINGLY long time. New record, its gotta be. So, hear exhaustive breakdowns of the best desert island game around, Miasmata, the critical darling Gone Home, the fourth in a long-running series of quirky RPGs, Mario and Luigi Dream Team, the stylish follow-up to The Dishwasher, Charlie Murder, the perhaps unfortunate remake of Flashback, Brad Shoemaker's favorite game,Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, Dave Lang's Divekick, Wayforward's Mighty Switch Force 2 and, finally, 7 Grand Steps: What Ancients Begat, Nathan's Game of Show from E3 2013. After all of that, we still find a bit of time for some news. Steve Ballmer is planning to leave Microsoft about a year from now, right after shutting down Games for Windows Live. Launch lineups for the Xbox One and the Playstation 4 have been revealed, so we run down those along with some tid-bits from Sony's conference at Gamescom this past week. We talk about Notch's cancelled sci-fi game, the PS3 exclusive Dark Souls II beta, and an exciting opportunity for indie developers over at GOG.comAll that and a few dalliances here and there on the Top Down Perspective!
It's a Ramblin' Rohr! Sean and Jon are jet-setting around the planet, so its just Nathan alone in a basement talking to himself. But hey, that's its own kind of weird fun, right? RIGHT? Anyway, topics this week range from Metro 2033 to the sudden change in policy towards Let's Players Nintendo just unleashed. That topic is way too big for one man, but I rattle off some thoughts, along with another news update or two and a brief appraisal of the latest Star Trek film. Oh, and moving is weird, huh? Some thoughts on that and more (a bit more, I promise its not too long) on this week's Top Down Perspective.
I'm pretty sure we didn't actually do much spoiler talking this time. Just tread lightly. It's that time of year again! We all sit down and run through our own personal top ten games of 2012! We also add a few other categories to the episode this time including Most Disappointing and our future Predictions. And as a bonus, we invited Pixel Response's Paul Fleck to come and join us for the fun times. So enjoy this extra long and extra special edition of the Top Down Perspective!
I have to apologize for the weird audio degradation of the call within the final ten minutes or so. While it doesn't take away from the rather decent conversation, it is noticeable. Thank you for your understanding. -Paul With TellTale's The Walking Dead episode 5 finally out and season one completed, Paul, Nathan and Sean Booker (of Top Down Perspective) sit down for an hour and discuss their thoughts on the game, compare decisions made and their differing outcomes and argue whether or not it can be considered a game! IF YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED THE WALKING DEAD AND WISH TO DO SO, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND SKIP THIS! WE SPOIL EVERYTHING FROM THE START! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!
After a week of post-convention illness and work woes, we are back with another helping of video-game-related anecdotes and news. Kicking it off, the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo was last week, so Sean, Jon and Nathan summarize their highlights from Western Canada’s BIGGEST nerd-friendly expo (so…many…bronies). Then they go over the pros and cons of “Indie Game: The Movie” before it is revealed that Nathan has a great dislike of Space Viking Wizards and, by proxy, the films in which they are prominently featured. Then it’s on to games, including the indie darlings Fez (oft-discussed but still beloved) and Lone Survivor, along with the first episode of the excellent (thus far) “Walking Dead” series. Jon finally finished Kid Icarus Uprising alongside some of that hot new title Mario Kart 7. Sean polished of Suda 51’s critical hit Shadows of the Damned (ahem…boners) and then spent some time with Asura in an effort to sort out his rage issues. More on that situation as it develops. On the news front, Sony decided it liked Nintendo’s Smash Bros. series so much they wanted to make a tribute to it using their characters, so we speculate about who should and shouldn’t be included (bit late to that party I know but it is a conversation that had to be…had). Some whispers of eagerly anticipated sequels are in the air, but that is all tempered by some odd decisions the majors are making in regards to E3. First off, no price will be announced for the Wii-U. Second, Valve we be in attendance but…who knows why as they don’t wish to announce anything. At all. Not even the hotly anticipated Richochet 2. Oh yes, and you know those Call of Duty games? They are going to make another one this year and it is scheduled to come out in November. There’s a twist with this one though. ROBOTS! So Nathan is all the way onboard. All that and another pile of your questions on this week’s episode of, the Top Down Perspective. - As summarized by Nathaniel Rohr
Sorry its late, but that is almost entirely due to the fact that for the first time in the history of the podcast, SEAN isn't here this week! That means a two man show starring Jon and Nathan, which also means a slight change in the order of operations. That's right, new first THEN the games we played. Revolutionary I know. Stories were a bit light this week as we recorded right on the verge of Gamescom, which is where all the big stuff is going on (including a new Grasshopper game, but we don't mention that at all on this show). Instead we talk about the upcoming ICO/Shadow of the Colossus HD collection and the exciting fact that some unseen aspects of "The Last Guardian" will be glimpsed in a featurette when it drops in September. We also talk about the long-awaited return of Counter-Strike, the only modern military shooter that ever mattered. Then its games games games, including Catherine, the greatest game ever made (Deadly Premonition to the layman), Shadows of the Damned, Another World, Mario's Picross and a handful of others (been a few days at this point, my memory isn't as a good as a chimpanzee's...that actually IS true, amazing creatures). Speaking of remarkable apes, Orangutans. Amazing. 97% of their DNA is virtually identical to our own, including whatever it is that makes iPads so fascinating because yes, some genius scientists somewhere are finally allowing our ape brethren to tinker with some of the latest technology and all of us here at the Top Down Perspective could not be happier. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is in theaters now if you want a glimpse at the amazing future that surely awaits us if we continue down this path (fingers AND toes crossed). All that and a record number of user-submitted questions! Thanks, keep 'em coming. Ah yes, and our theme song this week is an excerpt from the Suburban All-Star's song "Soccer Riot".
E3 happened…over a week ago. But hey, welcome to your eighth most useful source for all the latest happenings in the world of interactive entertainment (trance vibrators included), the Top Down Perspective! Herein you shall hear glorious tales detailing the games of tomorrow from our very own Jon Wheeler, who actually traveled to the City of Angels for the biggest (well, most prestigious) video-game trade show on this planet. Every single press conference is discussed in detail (arguably, too much detail, hence the length of this episode). But hey, what’s this, games are coming out right now! In addition to all the E3 chatter, we break down what we’ve been playing as per usual, though this week contains some pretty heavy hitters. The Duke is loose on the Xbox 360 and both Sean and Jon have some choice words to share regarding the highly publicized release of “Duke Nukem Forever”. Just think, if you were born the year this game started development you would be starting junior high, or planning a bar mitzvah, or some other rite of passage that takes place when you turn 13 (or 14 depending on who you ask but that ruins this tangent). Finally, Nathan gets so excited about “Child of Eden” he loses control of his ability to string words together in a coherent manner, resulting in some unfortunate, completely unintentional double entendres. To be honest, many more games are talked about in this segment but you’ll have to actually listen to the episode to find out what they are. Enjoy this extra long episode, we’ll be back with our regularly scheduled program (including the e-mail portion) next week.
This week the guys are play Halo: Reach, Rock Band 3, Mass Effect 2 (also reading the books) and Jon is playing some old GBA games that I can't remember. On the news side we have the Duke Nukem Forever release date, the announcement of Final Fantasy XIII-2 and a ton of 3DS (launch)news. All that and more on this week's Top Down Perspective.
It’s a four man show this week with Pixel Response’s own Paul Fleck joining the regular crew for some gabbin’ bout games (one of Nathan’s early ideas for a name for this very podcast, fun fact). Various games have been played including s’more of that Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, more Pac-Man CE DX and a dash of Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood for good measure. Not to mention Pitfall II: The Lost Caverns marking Game Room’s return to awesomeness. No seriously, there are actually quality Game Room games on the way. As to why, no one truly knows but we speculate a bit. Also, Sean has officially fallen head over heels in love with ilomilo, an adorable little indie game that is worth jumping through some weird hoops to purchase. Oh, and Paul played Black Ops, so apparently the servers are still up for that one. Then we tackle some news, starting off with some bizarre casting decisions on the upcoming Uncharted film. In short, we ain’t happy. We also examine some Mass Effect 2 stats, catch up with Axl Rose and all the wonderful things he’s been doing, and discuss some happenings regarding Sonic 4, the upcoming Elder Scrolls V, and Nintendo’s CES plans. All that and some random discussions along the way on this week’s Top Down Perspective.
Despite a smashed up arm, Sean joins Jon and Nathan to share his thoughts on some of this season’s big titles, such as Fable III and Criterion’s latest, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. All three of us managed to log some time with Pac Man Championship Edition DX (Deluxe?) and we gush over it thoroughly, perhaps to excess (you decide). In addition, we can safely say that Kirby loves him some cake, Vin Diesel loves him some explosions and Jon loves him some obscure NES games. The Tester continues to fill up our PS3 hard-drives as episode 3 hit this past week. While Sean wanders off in search of medical assistance, Jon and Nathan go over what news there was this past week, including some strange requests from the Canadian military, Portal 2’s completely unsurprising delay, Bizarre Creations’ current woes and the upcoming Spike VGA nominees. All this and more (well, not much more) on this week’s episode of the Top Down Perspective!
Call of Duty: Black Ops is here! Sadly, none of the core crew has played it, but never you mind because we managed to drag Dustin away from the game long enough to share his thoughts while enduring Sean’s sarcastic barbs. We also discuss other recent releases such as Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage, a batch of Kinect titles and Fallout: New Vegas (what? it’s still newish!). Then we (well, Jon and I), tackle some news, including Viacom’s plans to sell off Harmonix, the top-selling consoles in the U.S. (at least according to Nintendo’s market research guys) and the M-rated Fight Night Champion. All this and more on this special, extra late episode of the Top Down Perspective!
This week Sean brings up his time with Final Fantasy XIII and we discuss our opinions of the games and whether we will play more or not. Nathan shares his time with Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 1943, and continues to love Deadly Premonition (you should buy it). Jon claims to have finished with Resident Evil 5 once and for all and wraps up Heavy Rain. The Tester episode four is released and Sean and Nathan continue to love it as Jon once again chooses to never take part in it. We then move into the beginning of the Game Developer's Conference and Sony's PlayStation Move controller. Assassin's Creed 2's DRM continues to be great and we run through the top ten selling games of February. If you would like to hear a special Heavy Rain spoiler edition of the Top Down Perspective, email in (topdownperspective@hotmail.com) and let us know. Also, send in any Heavy Rain questions you'd like us to answer or address that we wouldn't normally be able to talk about on a spoiler-free podcast.
With the Interactive Achievement Awards behind us, the gang gets in their opinions on some of the finalists and the nominees they were put up against. Along with the release of the pilot episode of Sony's The Tester coming out, we share our thoughts on the premiere and what we would like to see come from it. We also talk about The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom, Bioshock 2 and Jon chooses to break out his old Game Gear for some Ren and Stimpy fun. Wrapping up the show sees us discuss Ubisoft's choice to restrict the use of their games (such as Assassin's Creed 2) and as always we read your questions on the air. A brief update: The Top Down Perspective can be downloaded directly from the iTunes store, just search us up and begin subscribing.
The inaugural episode of the Top Down Perspective introducing your three hosts: Nathan, Sean and Jon We talk about the latest news in the gaming industry while also talking about new releases such as No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle, Mass Effect 2, and more.
