2025 re-run bonus notes:   This rerun is releasing on the precise 5yr anniversary of its original release - in other words, this celebration of St. John's 40th birthday, featuring his wife, both his kids, both his parents, and his brother is re-releasing on St. John's 45th birthday!   Also, it is the second of a trilogy of music blocks (the first of which was last month's rerun), which, if not already clear to long-time listeners of the show will be explained in the intro to the third track of the trilogy, which will be our March 2025 rerun. So stay tuned til next month's rerun!   DISCLAIMER 1: DEAD-NAME ALERT! August is not their birth name, and this episode was recorded prior to their self-discovery, so it uses their birth/dead name. Because of this, I checked with August prior to releasing it to make sure they were okay with it. They said they were okay with it so long as I included the disclaimer - which I would've done anyway! :-D   DISCLAIMER 2: Apologies for some of the off-color jokes and references in the blooper reel. I was not as far along in my personal transformation at the point this episode was released. There are things that made this blooper that would not have today. Therefore, please consider it a piece of history rather than an accurate representation of current perspectives.   DISCLAIMER 3: the production value was much worse back in 2020. So if this is your first time hearing Nerd Noise Radio, please keep in mind that our production values have much improved in the time since.   ----------------------------- Original (2020) Show Notes -----------------------------   Today's broadcast is C1E51 for Mishmash Monday, February 3rd, 2020. Today's broadcast is Mishmash Monday - vol 9. With a fresh State of Play now behind us, it felt like a good opportunity to publish this week's Sacred Symbols early for our paying audience on Patreon. And yes: There's cause for celebration. After years of dormancy, Sony-owned studio Sucker Punch has finally revealed its sequel to 2020's Ghost of Tsushima. It's called Ghost of Yotei, and it launches exclusively on PlayStation 5 in 2025. But the recent presentation was chock-full of other games, too, including lingering remasters from times past, like Soul Reaver and Lunar. And -- yes, indeed! -- the rumors surrounding Horizon: Zero Dawn Remastered are real, too. From Hell Is Us and Fantasian Neo Dimension to LEGO Horizon Adventures and a new Yakuza title, we've got a lot to discuss. We wrap things up with listener inquiries, as is our tradition. Is the games industry missing a vital source of positive energy by eschewing live events? Will Square Enix ever port the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy to modern hardware? Could Helldivers 2 be in the midst of a major comeback? Do the New York Jets have Colin feeling a special sort of way? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

No one ever said the future would be easy. But I think we all saw the glimmer of a dream, somewhere in the sky that night. The tiniest spark of hope that we can change our fate. Who could say? That moment has come and gone. This week, Rick is joined by Chris (Retro Hangover Podcast) and Jon to focus on one of the black sheep of the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy XIII. The game certainly has a reputation - but is it earned? In the episode, we go over the presentation, the fantastic score (NOT by Uematsu!), the controversial datalog, and the troubled development. Is XIII worth a reexamination? We finish our long Final Fantasy adventure by playing Square's largest single player Final Fantasy yet. But does size equal quality? Does it equal ambition? We have many thoughts about this and about where the entire Final Fantasy VII Remake Project has gone and is heading in this enormous podcast about an equally enormous game. After dozens of hours, we are left with one simple question: why do we do this to ourselves? 1. Because we were ready to game2. Because we were sure of quality3. It's been a year since our first episode, but the internet's biggest retrospective series, Backtrack, is back! And this week: we're deep-diving on Final Fantasy XIII. In a summer where Baldur's Gate 3 and other bigger releases are happening: why are we talking about one of the most divisive Final Fantasy entries, you ask? Because we had the itch for more Final Fantasy after FFXVI, and well, because we're sick, of course. Released in North America in 2010 on the PS3 and Xbox, FFXIII split the fandom and had us asking pivotal questions: Why is it so linear? What the hell is a L'cie? What accent is Vanille using? Is this the death nail for Square? It's a confusing and fascinating game of terrible lows, bad story beats and character work, but it also holds many things worth praising: cutting edge graphics, the music, and new turn-based combat elements with the stagger and Paradigm systems. (We're a big fan of gameplay here at the Save Room and the Paradigm system had its hooks in us). The game spawned two sequels and the stagger-based combat system has been a franchise staple since so even with the negativity around it, it's impact has been lasting. While it's nowhere near our favorite entry we still find a lot to love and talk about and made it our focus to subject you, the listener, to it. Enjoy!

If you've listened to this podcast for more than a few weeks, you've probably heard at least one of our hosts complain about common RPG elements like turn-based combat and complex menuing. Maybe you agree with those complaints, or maybe you don't, but one thing is for sure, the garden-variety "JRPGs" just aren't for everyone. There are gamers out there in the gamerverse who prefer baby games for babies. One of those gamers may cohost this podcast. Well, in honor of those who prefer controllers with two buttons, this week we're simplifying your favorite crunchy video games! Todd is going to talk more about classical music than you're prepared for. Kyle may or may not be dunking on everyone's favorite 5v5 hero shooter. Final Fantasy XVI is a dark fantasy action adventure that tells its epic story via impressively cinematic cut-scenes, sleek, kinetic combat, and spectacular set pieces. Some poor quest design made the story drag, but the characters and combat never got old. In the roundup: Final Fantasy XIII, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Dave The Diver. Welcome to VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast: Episode 43 - The best game that takes ten or more hours to get good Let's face it: games are too long these days. I'm over 160 hours into Assassin's Creed Valhalla and I still haven't finished the bloody thing. But, perhaps worse than games that outstay their welcome are games that don't even get to the good part until you've put in a few shifts. The post child for this phenomenon is, of course, Final Fantasy XIII, a game which infamously funnels you down a narrow corridor for 30 or so gruelling hours before depositing you into a beautiful open world area for the game's penultimate act. Alex described it beautifully in this week's podcast as a sewage pipe that leads to an ocean. But, surprising everyone, Final Fantasy XIII wasn't actually his pick for this topic. To find that out, you'd best listen to it. It's fortunate then that there are several ways to do so on this very web page. So strap in for a mercifully short 30 minutes of VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast, the only podcast called that. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

How clear is Final Fantasy XIII's story? Not exactly Crystal. Final Fantasy XIII has a wild ride to the finish, and three Retro Encounter panelists cap off their personal experiences playing it by reacting to FF XIII's remarkable design changes, confusing character motivations, and beautiful imagery in its final chapters. So who did we bring to the final battle? Why are there so many metaphors for abandonment in the game? How does Square-Enix ruin this beautiful ending in future games? When PlayStation 4 Pro launched in 2016, it was fairly divisive. Why did we need two iterations of the same console? Isn't it a waste of money? Wouldn't developers have more work to do? It all ended up being needless worry, and so it should come as no surprise that -- if indications are correct -- PlayStation 5 Pro is en route for 2023 or 2024. What's the potential of the machine? Do we even need it? And how will potential consumers respond to a higher-end console when they can't even find the base version? We discuss. This news-thick episode also touches on lots of other issues, from God of War: Ragnarok's release date and Death Stranding 2's seeming leak, to lots of PlayStation Plus drama and new nuggets about PlayStation's PC and acquisitions strategies. Our lengthy podcast ends, as always, with listener inquiries. Why do people insist on scapegoating video games for societal violence? Will Square Enix ever re-package and re-release the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy? Can The Callisto Protocol earn the survival horror crown? Did one listener's car accident bring a deer within striking distance of this very podcast?! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
