An old piece of games industry lore has recently reemerged, and it has people wondering about a tantalizing what-if. Back in 1999, The Matrix hit theaters, and the co-creators of the film happened to have been huge fans of Hideo Kojima, himself a year removed from the launch of Metal Gear Solid. And, as was reported at the time, there was potential that Konami would allow Kojima to pursue a licensed Matrix game post-MGS. A lot of new information has since emerged about what did and didn't happen here, and it makes for a great conversation starter. So let's lean into it, shall we? Our conclusion: Perhaps Kojima doing MGS2 instead of a Matrix game means he likely dodged a bullet (pardon the pun). Other news this week includes some quiet updates seemingly being made to PlayStation Portal's functionality, leaks from Bluepoint's cancelled God of War game, the most recent China Hero Project title in the form of Loulan: The Cursed Sand, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Following Freedom Wars, Patapon, and Everybody's Golf, what should Sony's and Bandai Namco's next collaborative re-release be? Do PC players have any reason to invest in the modern PlayStation ecosystem? Will the culture war consume Naughty Dog's Intergalactic? Does Colin type so fast that his keyboard smokes?

Name any random PlayStation IP from the days of yore, and people will claim to want it back. One such franchise is Sucker Punch's long-dormant Sly Cooper trilogy, the third game of which is now 20 years old. (And yes, we got a fourth Sly game from Sanzaru in 2013, but it's not like many of you played it.) A recent interview indicates there are very few people at Sony's Washington-based studio interested in returning to the Thievius Raccoonus, and perhaps for good reason. After all, they want to sell actual units. We discuss! Plus: New PlayStation 6 rumors percolate in the wild, Bend is apparently hiring for a multiplayer title, precious details about Naughty Dog's Intergalactic emerge, and deep sales information has been released about PlayStation's historic software sales here in the US over the last 30 years. Then: Listener inquiries! Will the Hollow Knight: Silksong pricing drama ever end? Should Media Molecule invest in the 'cozy game' revolution? Is Marathon even worth being excited over at all? Can we help ingratiate the younger generation into the psychosis of Sacred Symbols? While Ghost of Yotei has gone gold and is now right around the corner, other segments of PlayStation Studios are on far less sturdy ground. Fairgames (or Fairgame$, if you like marketing) is seemingly the latest victim of an unprecedented run of bad decision-making, execution, and leadership within Sony's first party, as the upcoming shooter has shed its director, often (though not always) a dire sign for any project. Taken with recent reports (from this very show) of poor internal playtesting -- all the while Haven has already shed its major front-facing face and co-founder Jade Raymond -- we simply have to wonder whether Fairgames will ever launch at all. And if it does, does it have any potential to succeed whatsoever? Other news this week includes the rumored reemergence of Insomniac's Wolverine project, downward-revised SSD space for upcoming PS5 consoles, a fresh look at the promising Uncharted-like IO title 007: First Light, and much more. Then: Listener inquiries! Does Naughty Dog actually represent the pinnacle of game dev? How much can people twist themselves into a knot to justify piracy? What kind of pressure are studios and publishers under to adopt AI solutions? Will "Alleghany Hogs" catch on around the world? Send us a textFungi have always been the overlooked kingdom of pathogens. While we've obsessed over viral pandemics and bacterial superbugs, few considered how a simple fungal mutation could tear civilization apart. That's the terrifying premise anchoring "The Last of Us" – and what makes it so unnervingly plausible. At its core, this brilliant adaptation isn't really about the cordyceps infection that transforms humans into mindless, clicking predators. It's about what remains human when everything else is lost. Pedro Pascal delivers a solid performance as Joel, a man hollowed out by grief after losing his daughter in the initial outbreak. When he reluctantly takes on the job of transporting Ellie (a perfectly cast Bella Ramsey) – a teenager mysteriously immune to infection – across a devastated America, neither expects how profoundly they'll change each other. The show masterfully balances faithful recreation of the game's most iconic moments with meaningful expansions to the story. Episode 3's exploration of Bill and Frank's relationship transforms a minor game character into a love story. The practical effects bringing the infected to life – especially the terrifying Clickers – create genuinely nightmarish moments that honor the game's horror elements while adding new dimensions in live action. Most importantly, the gradual evolution of Joel and Ellie's relationship from reluctant traveling companions to surrogate father and daughter feels earned through shared trauma and genuine connection. What lingers after watching isn't the apocalyptic setting or zombie-like threats, but the profound question at the heart of the story: In a world where humanity itself might be finished, what makes individual human connections worth fighting for? And when those connections conflict with the greater good, what choice would any of us make? The answer, as Joel discovers, isn't found in heroic sacrifice or logical calculation, but in that primal, irrational force that has always defined us – the capacity to love beyond all reason.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbASupport the show

If you're tired of The Last of Us, well, it's really too bad. That's because Naughty Dog has updated The Last of Us: Part II yet again, this time with a so-called Chronological Mode that orders the game's chapters and subchapters sequentially. It's easy to mock this many updates, of course, but in reality, is Sony going above-and-beyond in keeping some of its older games alive? Shouldn't we applaud the years-long dedication to not only The Last of Us, but to God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, Horizon, and others? We discuss. Then: Twisted Metal's second season on Peacock gets a new trailer, STALKER 2 is finally confirmed for PlayStation 5, Final Fantasy IX Remake may be in trouble, Capcom acknowledges Mega Man, and more. Plus: Listener inquiries! If we could only play a single game-as-a-service, which would it be? Could gaming be entering a more serious phase, as the industry finds itself fused more with education? Is it crazy to play sequels without having experienced the original? What are the percentage odds Colin is on the precipice of becoming a Kingdom Hearts superfan? James Gunn's Superman held its premiere in London July, 2, where the director confidently told The Times of London that his superhero epic celebrates "the story of America" and champions basic human kindness in a world that desperately needs it. Meanwhile, star David Corenswet shared at the London premiere that his predecessors did “a very Superman thing,” with former Men of Steel Henry Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin encouraging him to make the role his own.Universal's Jurassic World Rebirth chomped its way to a $147 million five-day weekend opening during the Fourth of July. While those numbers would make any studio exec happy, they're actually a steep drop from the franchise's predecessors, suggesting that after 32 years, audiences might be experiencing some dino-fatigue. Universal clearly saw the writing on the wall and slashed the production budget from a mammoth $250 million down to a more modest $180 million, but the franchise is still roaring overseas. Australian-American actor Julian McMahon, beloved for his roles in Nip/Tuck, Charmed, and as Dr. Doom in the 2000's 20th Century Fox Fantastic Four films, died peacefully on July 2nd at age 56 following a private battle with cancer.Michael Madsen, the gravel-voiced character actor best known for his menacing roles in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, and The Hateful Eight, died Thursday morning from cardiac arrest at his Malibu home at age 67.The next installment in Denis Villenueve's Dune franchise will officially be titled Dune: Three. This week we talk about the rest of the fallout from the Microsoft layoffs, Naughty Dog adding a chronological way to play TLOUII, the Stop Killing Games movement in the UK and finish the show off with Delvin's battles with sleep paralysis and his Grandmother haunting his work. Just another week with PSVG.
Fred's neck-deep in Death Stranding 2, Jake's still playing Doom The Dark Ages. In the news: Neil Druckmann is stepping away from The Last of Us Season 3 to focus on Naughty Dog, but he's still playing games—Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 blew his mind, and it might be a GOTY dark horse. Also: Forza Motorsport may have stalled out for good as Turn 10 gets gutted and GT7 keeps cruising. Helldivers 2 jumping to Xbox has the PS5 crowd split, and a new Mafia: The Old Country gameplay drop has serious Uncharted energy. Plus, over a million gamers want to stop the industry from killing off old games, but publishers aren't exactly on board.By joining our Patreon community for ONLY $1.00 per month, you'll also enjoy these exclusive benefits:Early Access: Be the first to listen to our episodes as soon as they're ready. Sean returns to the podcast with Ryan and Dylan to review season two of HBO's The Last of Us adaptation.
Hey there, nerds! In this episode of Scene N Nerd, Sarah and Will dive into some juicy entertainment gossip, starting with Neil Druckmann saying sayonara to "The Last of Us" TV series. Yep, he's heading back to Naughty Dog, and our hosts are here to ponder what that means for the show. Was this a strategic retreat from fan backlash, or is he just craving some creative freedom? Let's spill the tea! Then, they jump into the action-packed finale of "Ironheart," breaking down the last three episodes like pros. From Riri's epic showdown with Parker to the jaw-dropping reveal of Mephisto, they'll cover all the character drama, pacing hiccups, and those pesky unresolved plot threads that left them both cheering and scratching their heads. What's up with Parker's motivations? And what's the deal with Riri's devilish bargain? They've got thoughts, and they're not holding back! With plenty of laughs and some seriously insightful commentary, this episode is a must-listen for fans of "Ironheart," "The Last of Us," and anyone who loves the wild ride of superhero storytelling! 0:00 Welcome 0:35 Neil Druckmann's exit from "The Last of Us" 6:10 "Ironheart" Episodes 4-6 discussion 53:50 Closing thoughts Wanna keep the conversation going? On today's Daily Fix, Naughty Dog surprise drops a new update for The Last of Us 2 that changes gives you a new way to experience the game, also Sony announces a deep dive for Ghost of Yotei at this week's State of Play this week and lastly, Pokemon fan flies all the way to Italy to show him a very special Pokemon card.
For the first time ever, PlayStation is publishing one of its own games on Xbox. The new port comes in the form of 2024's smash-hit multiplayer game Helldivers 2 from second party studio Arrowhead, and though Sony has a long-but-silent history of bringing games to other consoles -- there was a Wipeout game on N64, after all, and the likes of Death Stranding and MLB: The Show have already migrated to Xbox via intermediaries -- never before have they acted as publisher. Is this a one-off, or a move that could signify a new strategy? Will Xbox players conditioned to Game Pass put their money where their mouth is? Are single-player exclusives next? Then: Neil Druckmann announces he's done with The Last of Us on HBO, instead turning his full attention back to Naughty Dog, while it sure does sound like Sony-owned team Firesprite is openly hiring for a PlayStation 6 project. After some other news, we get into what we're playing before ending the show as we always do, with six questions, comments, concerns, thoughts, and ideas from our audience. What are our ruminations concerning Xbox's recent layoffs and cancellations? Will the PS5 era be looked back upon as a generation of wasted potential? How do we feel about the Stop Killing Games initiative in Europe? Are some listeners intentionally exposing their wives to Sacred Symbols in order to facilitate a divorce? Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement. 0:00:00 - Intro0:23:03 - Patreon numbers0:29:17 - Benji0:36:16 - Don't show your wife Sacred0:43:47 - This week's situation0:47:51 - Happy Birthday Nick0:52:23 - Defending the PlayStation concert0:59:28 - Helldivers 2 coming to Xbox1:31:18 - Neil Druckmann is no longer working on TLOU on HBO1:40:45 - PSSR update in 20261:54:12 - Firesprite is hiring1:59:29 - Is College Basketball returning?2:02:56 - Street Fighter movie casting2:06:49 - What We've Been Playing (Death Stranding, Death Stranding 2, Peak)2:45:15 - Xbox's unraveling3:04:57 - Supporting layoffs3:15:19 - Studios moving to cheaper cities3:18:57 - What is going on this generation?3:30:10 - Journalism as a path into marketing or development3:33:38 - Stop Killing Games Learn more about your ad choices. Xbox is always finding rakes to step on, which is ridiculous. After the success for NCAA College football, EA is brining NCAA College Basketball, and no one is shocked. Vin Diesel announces the plan for Fast X part 2, and there's major concerns. Matt Reeves finally finishes the Script for The Batman sequel, and James Gunn gives us who is playing Jor El. Plus a full review for F1 The Movie, which is hands down the best movie of the year so far. That and more on tonight's episode.
We kick off this holiday weekend on The Ankler Podcast with Matthew Frank exposing a rebellion brewing in film schools, where young cinephiles are shunning AI, while their mentors encourage them to embrace the new technology. Later, Sean McNulty breaks down the box office battles this July 4th, with Jurassic World Rebirth trying to take pole position away from Brad Pitt's F1. But the real bombshell? Lesley Goldberg's exclusive scoop: Neil Druckmann, the co-creator of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us games and the Emmy Award-winning HBO series, is abandoning the TV adaptation ahead of season three. Lesley, Elaine Low and Natalie Jarvey dissect how Druckmann helped shape The Last of Us, why he's leaving now, and where that leaves the show and co-creator Craig Mazin ahead of its next chapter. "The Last Of Us," the Emmy Award-winning drama series from Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, partially adapts the 2020 game "The Last Of Us Part II" with dazzling action sequences, immersive production design, and state-of-the-art visual and practical effects. Ben and Daniel got here from Jackson just in time to talk about Episode 5, "Feel Her Love." They discuss the specifics of the action and the pivotal closing scene, then pull back a bit to comment on how the effort to adapt the game is going before forecasting what could be coming next. Then, Ben talks to longtime Naughty Dog game developer Almudena Soria Sancho, lead animator on 'The Last of Us Part II,' about her thoughts on the 'TLOU' adaptation, bringing the Stalkers and other infected to life, perfecting performance capture, the advantages and drawbacks of film and TV versus video games, what she's most looking forward to seeing the rest of this season and next season, and more. By popular demand we've been forced into covering Uncharted 2021, an adaptation of some of the Naughty Dog video game series. Not the good one (The Last Of Us on HBO) but Uncharted 2021, a movie that mostly covers some of the ground seen in parts 3 and 4. With Tom Holland taking on the role as a young Nathan Drake and Mark Whalberg playing that much beloved character, himself, this globe trotting adventure sets the bar for movies that feel like they come out in 2014. This week is one of revelations, as the once-unknown finally sees the light of day. For starters, we have exclusive information on WB San Diego's cancelled game, a never-before-discussed (until now) WB-infused kart racer codenamed Moonlight, in development for years before having the plug pulled. We give you all the details. Then: If you're a Sacred Symbols listener, you've known about Sony's secret LA-based studio for the better part of two years, one led by Call of Duty veteran Jason Blundell. Well, now we know the team's name -- Dark Outlaw Games -- and have a better glimpse as to their future plans. Plus: Polish FPS studio People Can Fly signed a second party deal with Sony, Konami revealed its upcoming all-new horror offering Silent Hill F, the Final Fantasy series surpassed a staggering 200 million copies sold, Starfield's inevitable PS5 port is definitively leaked, and much more. Finally: Listener inquiries from our Patreon audience! What's the perfect age for a kid to start playing games? Are there any famous (or not-so-famous) gaming Easter Eggs that have stuck with us over time? Will Iga ever release Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night 2? Should we let Dustin speak more, or silence him completely? Your browser is holding you back. Level up here: https://operagx.gg/SacredSymbols Sponsored by Opera GX! This week, Sacred Symbols is a Kojima Fanboy Podcast... for a little while, anyway. Finally -- finally! -- we have a release date for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and it's fairly close, arriving on PlayStation 5 in late June. And as a deep love for Kojima is perhaps the biggest gaming stance all three Sacred hosts share, we thought we'd spend some time getting hyped up following an all-new 10 minute trailer, collector's edition and pre-order details, and so on. Other news this week includes word of major forthcoming updates to PS5 Pro, the leak of a mysterious PSP game called STAMP that was never greenlit into production, the announcement of PowerWash Simulator 2 (!) from FuturLab, rumors of imminent PS5 releases for Indiana Jones and an Oblivion Remake, and much more. Then: Listener inquiries! What do we think of the reveal that Naughty Dog's Intergalactic will deal with religion as a central theme? Do we have any thoughts about the copious leaks from the recent Battlefield playtests? How will MLB: The Show 25 shape-up in its first current-gen-only PlayStation outing? Does Dustin have a serious misconception of what some people actually do when listening to our shows?
