Dinner for One: How an English comedy became a German tradition

Every New Year's Eve, millions of Germans turn on their TVs to rewatch an old favourite – the comedy Dinner for One.The black and white sketch is in English and features a British cast but is virtually unknown in the United Kingdom. The two-hander starts with butler James laying a table for five people for dinner. Then Miss Sophie arrives. It's her 90th birthday and she wants to celebrate with four friends: Sir Toby, Admiral von Schneider, Mr Pomeroy, and Mr Winterbottom. The only problem is they're all dead so James must impersonate the guests – and drink on their behalf – with hilarious results. The late German entertainer Peter Frankenfeld first saw the show in the theatre during a trip to Blackpool. He wanted to record it in Germany but Freddie Frinton, who played the butler and owned the copyright to the show, initially refused to take part because of his experiences during World War Two.Peter's son Thomas Frankenfeld tells Vicky Farncombe how his father's own war story, involving snipers and a Nazi surgeon, persuaded Freddie to change his mind. The programme is now shown on TV every New Year's Eve in places including Germany, Scandinavia and Switzerland.“We watch it every year,” says Thomas. “It's really funny. Still after all this time.”Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more.Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Dinner for One. Oh boy... What have we done to ourselves? In a moment of uncertainty we decided to double dip into the Winterbottom well. We knew we were going to review this film "at some point" BUT we didn't really know what we were letting ourselves in for. The "arthouse/mainstream/romantic/concert film" is only 69 (lol) minutes long but it feels like it's relatively short runtime. A film that depicts heavily gratuitous un-simulated sexual acts performed by our lead couple, some scenes depicting our lead character's job as a glaciologist (!) and 9 (counted and confirmed) songs of musical acts of the time performing at Brixton Academy in London. If you thought that it would add up to the sum total of "nothing" you'd be close. If you thought it was a bit of a shallow, uncomfortable experiment that doesn't really justify its needs and the pressure put on its performers, you may also be right. If you think its a bit pretentious, you'd also be on the right track. See what we have to say in one of our personal favourite breakdowns of a film we've done in a while.

From El Capitan in Yosemite to Tham Luang Nang Non cave in northern Thailand and Meru Peak in the Indian Himalayas, Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (her partner in filmmaking and in life) have captured the imagination of audiences worldwide with intimate, non-fiction portrayals of outdoor athletes pushing themselves to extremes. Free Solo, their 2018 film, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary. Their first scripted project, Nyad, boasts Oscar-nominated performances from Annette Benning and Jodie Foster. The film that blew Chai's mind? Michael Winterbottom's 2002 In This World, which blurs the lines of fiction and documentary to convey the story of an Afghani boy's journey from a Pakistani refugee camp to London. She joins Cooper and Tabitha to explore the finer points of Winterbottom's film and dives into questions of truth vs fiction, the nuances of working with real-life characters, and how the relationships she cultivates with her participants are essential to her filmmaking craft. Building a thriving recruitment business in the middle of a global pandemic may be unimaginable to most people, but not for Kyle Winterbottom.   Kyle's strategy is clear and straightforward: give value, give value, give value! In this episode, Kyle uncovers the story of his journey into the recruitment industry and how the global crisis turned into a pathway of opportunity.    Kyle is the Founder & CEO of Orbition Group, an award-winning talent solutions business. Based in Manchester, they focus exclusively on scaling Data, Analytics, and artificial intelligence teams across the UK, Europe, and the USA.    Kyle is also the Founder/Host of the Driven by Data Community which is comprised of three components; The Roundtable, The Podcast, and The Mentorship. Kyle elaborated on his three proven long-term strategies for boosting engagement and building relationships   Episode Outline and Highlights   [02:02] Launching a recruitment business during the height of the pandemic. [06:11] Community building and visibility to build brand awareness.  [10:23] Giving value through podcasting - should you start your own podcast? [17:02] Establishing commercial relationships. [24:26] How hosting live events can scale your business by demand. [34:43] Kyle talks about their Mentorship Programme and why it is the best long-term strategy. [41:57] Growing by demand vs. growing by design. [46:10] Revisiting business development strategies.   Give Value, Give Value, Give Value.   The pandemic can be perceived by many as not the best time to launch a business, but Kyle looked at it as the best time to kick off Orbition. His strategy is clear and straightforward: leverage content marketing and community building to build brand awareness. Give value first, and build relationships after.   “I guess that the whole premise was very simple. Just create a community of people who will ultimately be potential target customers and buying clients. Let's add a load of value to them and from there that'll create relationships. That then I guess the whole premise really is give value, give value, give value.”   Kyle elaborated on his strategies and you will find that there are three main takeaways:   Content marketing and adding value to your ecosystem can lead to a snowball effect, where people will want to participate in your engagement activities. Prioritizing value adding to your market will generate not only visibility. It will position you as an expert and thought leader which gives you authority. It builds the best type of relationship - as your audience appreciates your contributions, you build a relationship that goes beyond the customer-vendor type.   Kyle shared his practices on how they continuously add value: via podcasting, live events, and mentorship programs.   Podcasting and Hosting Events   I was astonished when Kyle shared with me that 100% of their clients are through inbound marketing. I really wanted to pick his brains on their roadmap and the strategies they use.    He shared that podcasting has been a really effective tool in engaging with their target audience. One of the reasons that it is really successful is because it invited guests who they find credible, people of influence and seniority within the marketplace who have something to share. Kyle also reminded the listeners that it can take time to really get engagement and ROI - so it is really important to be patient and consistent.   After the pandemic, Kyle and his team started hosting free live events. These events started to garner more demand than they could facilitate, so they had to find the right balance of content and format in order to scale these events. They get very positive feedback from those who participate in these live events. Kyle and his team are able to bring together Chief Data Officers to share best practices while networking with one another.    Aside from the above engagement components, Kyle also discussed their mentorship program.   Deep Diving Into Their Mentorship Program    “The mentorship program came from a place where I'm continually looking at what is the next thing that we can do for this community that adds value and how can we do something that also strategically aids the direction of the business”   Kyle shared what their mentorship program looks like and how it helps those starting their career in data analytics improve in technical and soft skills. Kyle also revealed that this is not something they are monetizing at the moment. He shared why: “It's more about the brand visibility and having that relationship, because I think for us, in all honesty, what we can earn from you know, charging for a mentorship program will be really insignificant in comparison to what we can earn off having that relationship with those people and obviously, what you know we're again think about the long game. “   This is indeed a wonderful approach to engagement and adding value to the community. If you think about it, the 300+ people joining their mentorship program become their brand ambassadors. Knowing that someday those who were mentored will eventually become decision makers and hiring managers, they will be future clients.   Our Sponsor   This podcast is proudly sponsored by i-intro    i-intro® is an end-to-end retained recruitment platform. Today I'm chatting with Kyle Winterbottom, who is the owner of Orbition Group and an advisor/recruiter for companies who are hiring top talent in the data industry. Kyle and I discuss whether the concept of data products has meaningful value to companies, or if it's in a hype cycle of sorts. Kyle then shares his views on what sets the idea of data products apart from other trends, the well-paid opportunities he sees opening up for product leaders in the data industry, and why he feels being able to increase user adoption and quantify the business impact of your work is also relevant in a candidate's ability to negotiate higher pay. Kyle and I also discuss the strange tendency for companies to mistakenly prioritize technical skills for these roles, the overall job market for data product leaders, average compensation numbers, and what companies can do to attract this talent. (11:26) The different levels of maturity Kyle sees in organizations that are approaching him for help hiring data product talent, and how soft skills are often overlooked (15:37) Kyle's views on who is successfully landing data product manager roles and how that's starting to change (23:20) What Kyle's observations are on the salary bands for data product manager roles and the type of money people can make in this space (25:41) Brian and Kyle discuss how the skills of DPMs can help these leaders improve earning potential (30:30) Kyle's observations and advice to companies seeking to improve the data product talent they attract (38:12) How listeners can learn more about Kyle and Orbition Group (47:55) Quotes from Today's Episode “I think data products, obviously, there's starting to get a bit of hype around it, which I've got no doubt will start to lead organizations to look down that route, just because they see and hear about other organizations doing it. ... [but] what it's helping organizations to do is to drive adoption.” — Kyle Winterbottom (05:45) “I think we're at a point now where it's becoming more and more clear, day by day, week by week, the there's more to [the data industry] than just the building of stuff.” – Kyle Winterbottom (12:56) “The whole soft skills piece is becoming absolutely integral because it's become—you know, it's night and day now, between the people that are really investing in themselves in that area and how quickly they're progressing in their career because of that. But yeah, most organizations don't even think about that.” – Kyle Winterbottom (18:49) “I think nine times out of ten, most businesses overestimate the importance of the technical stuff practically in every role. … Even data analysts, data scientists, all they're bothered about is the tech stack that they've used, [but] there's a lot more to it than just the tech that they use.” – Kyle Winterbottom (22:56) “There's probably a big opportunity for really good product people to move into the data space because it's going to be well paid with lots of opportunity. [It's] quite an interesting space.” – Kyle Winterbottom (24:05) “As soon as you get to a point where if you can help to drive adoption and then you can quantify the commercial benefit of that adoption to the organization, that probably puts you up near the top in terms of percentile of being important to a data organization.” – Kyle Winterbottom (32:21) “We're forever talking in our industry about the importance of storytelling. Yeah, I've never seen a business once tell a good story about how good it is to work for them, specifically in regards to their data analytics team and telling a story about that.” – Kyle Winterbottom (39:37) Links Kyle's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kylewinterbottom/ Orbition Group: https://www.orbitiongroup.com
