On this episode we look back at 1995's dark fantasy film The City of Lost Children starring Ron Perlman.https://www.spreaker.com/episode/the-city-of-lost-children--72641406We also discuss recent movies #mastersoftheuniverse #disclosureday and #thefuriousAn international co-production of companies from France, Germany, and Spain, 1995's The City of Lost Children was the second film directed by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Their previous film Delicatessen, released in 1991, was described as a zany post-apocalyptic black comedy in the style of Terry Gilliam. Based on the success of both Delicatessen and The City of Lost Children, Jeunet would go on to direct 1997's Alien Resurrection and 2001's award winning romantic comedy Amelie. The City of Lost Children not only got its own Playstation game, but would also become a huge inspiration for both the Fallout and Bioshock video game franchises.Fallout designer Tim Cain listed the film among the cinematic influences on the game's art direction, and later said that elements of Fallout's power armor and technology aesthetic drew from the film's helmet eyepieces, tubing, and vents. This movie is also inspired the visual design of the video game BioShock (2007). From the scene of the man in scuba gear carrying a child to the parts where she climbs and descends from the pipes look like they came straight out of the underwater city of Rapture.
Happy Monday, everyone! To celebrate the start of the working week, we're looking at Star Trek episodes where people mess with the memories of our cast and put them through menial, awful work.O'Brien must continue to suffer in Hard Time, where he's lived through decades of prison time just for being a bit nosey. Can he deal with the mind-shattering prison sentence, or will he still be traumatised and we'll never speak of this after the episode's end? Then our main feature is a two-parter where the crew of Voyager are brainwashed into factory jobs (apart from Paris who couldn't even manage that). Watch the rivalry between the Emergency Command Hologram and Harry Kim! Janeway has a romance plot and there's some bad CGI!03:30 What Non-Star Trek Thing We've Been Enjoying: An anti-recommendation for Atlas Shrugged, recommendations for Bioshock, Charlie editing the Grand Comic Database09:02 Star Trek: Deep Space Nine “Hard Time”41:43 Star Trek: Voyager “Workforce”Talking points include: Poirot's facial hair, talking Miles down from reading Ayn Rand, Mark Morrison, No Gods No Mayors, a harsh burn from Miles, DS9 has a counsellor? What is Miles' middle name anyway? A bee gets loose in Charlie's room. Buffy. Farscape. Tek War. Isn't it good that prisons aren't run for profit in the real world? Prestige TV ghosts of the mind. David Cage wishes he could get this emotional. Bryan Fuller doesn't get weird with it. Tom can't even hack being a brainwashed labourer. Just be Janeway's consort, Jaffen! Charlie's upsetting second Voyager: Across the Universe playthrough. Anything can pull rank on Harry. Charlie got contacted by Jehovah's Witnesses. Temat do odcinka pojawił się bardzo szybko, a takim swego rodzaju zapalnikiem jest film Mortal Kombat II. Wpadliśmy na pomysł, bo pogadać o grach, które zasługują na dobrą adaptację filmową albo serialową. W ostatnich latach mieliśmy sporo dobrych rzeczy jak The Last of Us (pierwszy sezon, bo od drugim nie rozmawiamy) czy Fallout. If the release calendar holds as currently constructed, Grand Theft Auto VI will launch into the waiting arms of millions upon millions of day-one players. And since it's likely to be the highest-grossing entertainment event in the history of mankind, it's fair to assume that the marketing push will be substantial. As we get ever-closer to the fall, Take Two's CEO has been giving revealing interviews about the insane money, expectations, and consequences behind Rockstar's much-anticipated project (and word on these digital streets is that Sony has secured the marketing rights to the game, which is absolutely massive for PlayStation 5). Are you ready to withstand a hype machine the likes of which you've never seen before? Plus: Strauss Zelnick expresses disappointment over Civilization VII and laments the lack of a new BioShock, a majority of consumers polled report never buying games at full price, Call of Duty is finally skipping PlayStation 4 moving forward, Yacht Club's Mina the Hollower gets a release date, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Should Sony reform its existing refund system on PSN? Is there an alternate reality where Sony kept the 007 film license in the '90s, thus opening up PlayStation to a series of James Bond games? Should PlayStation explore surprise reveals a la the new Star Fox? Does Colin have a potential business opportunity in the works naming other people's children? In today's Daily Fix:In an interview with Game File, Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, expressed his disappointment with all the BioShock 4 delays, but he isn't surprised by them. The game was announced back in 2019 and there have been no major updates since. BioShock 4 reportedly underwent a major story overhaul at developer Cloud Chamber, but that's it. In other news, Xbox's CEO Asha Sharma has revealed a new Xbox bootup sound and animation, and it should make longtime fans happy. It's the latest, albeit small, change Sharma has made since taking the reins at Xbox, including making significant changes to Game Pass. And in related news, Asha Sharma is also aware Xbox has an exclusivity problem. Xbox has plenty of first-party titles, but under previous CEO Phil Spener, nearly all of their exclusives were to make their way to PlayStation 5 and Switch/Switch 2. That could change if Sharma decides to shift strategy.

With only a few games in the series, Bioshock is one of the most beloved gaming franchises of all time. And part of the reason is its deep stories and consistent quality across all 3 games. But despite its acclaim, the guys hadn't ever finished the 3rd entry in the series, Bioshock Infinite, until recently. Does it reach the heights of the first game, or is the modernized veneer more of a facade? And hey, it's our turn this time- Bioshock has long been a favorite of mine that I've revisited through the years. But when put under the Tales from the Backlog microscope, does it hold up under pressure or does it spring a leak? Listen in to find out. Listen, there is still bad news. More AI stuff and more studio closings and people losing their jobs. It's still pretty bleak. And it isn't likely to change for quite some time. But, in an effort to not yet again sound like a broken record of just horrible news every week, I'd like to pose a question to you. If you could wipe the memory of any game you've played, so that you could experience it again for the very first time, what would you pick? What game made such an impression on you that going through it again, with a fresh mind and fresh eyes, would be your choice? Half-Life 1/2 were amazing games with mechanics we'd never seen before at the time, but if only your memory of it was wiped, would it be what it was then by playing it today? I had a few picks for myself. Mark Of The Ninja was one. It's a game I've not played in a long time and would likely feel like playing it for the first time. Another was Bioshock Infinite (probably Bioshock 1, as well). Those two games, while playing them wouldn't seem at all much different than anything else out there…it's their stories that I want to experience again for the first time. And it's a bit hard for me to find something else like that – although I'm sure they exist. I just can't think of them at the moment. Maybe Braid. Maybe. So let us know what your picks are. And maybe for a little bit we aren't thinking about job losses and AI running up the tab on all our fun stuff and everything else going on at the moment. At least for a little bit. At this point playing ANY Splinter Cell game would feel like I'm playing it for the first time again. Ubisoft, it's been 4,584 days since a new Splinter Cell game (non-animated series or guest spot in another game franchise, remake, BBC radio drama, or VR exclusive) was released. Also, there's been 1,626 job losses in the gaming industry since January 1, 2026.

Escuchar audio
In massive gaming news, and I MEAN MASSIVE! Phil Spencer has retired from Xbox and Microsoft and his #2 Sarah Bond resigned as well, as a questionable new CEO takes the reigns. Plus Sony plans to reboot their wider Spider-manless Spider-verse after its utter collapse, no more morbin time? Mortal Kombat 2 got a Johnny Cage filled trailer and Valve is getting sued by the state of New York and as Jackie Chiles would say: "It's outrageous, egregious, preposterous!"

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Ultima IV. We talk about the boat, we talk about dungeons (a tiny bit), we deep dive into NPCs and consequences, we talk about the quests and how everything is in the world, and answer some listener email. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: More of Ultima IV (Much more, in B's case) Issues covered: revisiting locations and finding new things, a game that does a lot with a little, everything existing in the world, getting to know the world, NPCs sharing sprites and being hard to remember, getting a ship and fighting your way on, broadside combat, dying to a waterspout, wanting to search the oceans, badly simulating tacking, riding a horse, being interrupted in any location, trying to replicate the tabletop experience, feeling like a "yes" game, whether what you do matters, can you be a thief, watering down a morality system, having a limited palette of options at any one time, layering frosting, taking out the friction and icky feeling, the niche audience of some RPGs, taking elements from older games and bringing them into modern games, asking questions of the player who is also the character, avoiding the uncanny valley, an aside into adventure mode, the horseshoe effect on NPCs, reaching the limits of what the human brain can contemplate, an aside into Dunbar's number, facing the same challenges, chunking chapters, feeling the anxiety of there being too much, coalescing your notes from time to time, the telescope moment and seeing the map, the lack of loot, preparing to do things, validating your assumptions, having to revisit everywhere, the friction of Pikmin, getting good controllers, handheld mode, the Wavebird, bouncing off character creation, character creation we've liked, wanting a story to wrap around a more specific character, the generic hero, having fun with a character creator, a freeing character creator. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Final Fantasy (series), Gold Box (series), Eye of the Beholder, Outer Wilds, The Witcher (series), Beowulf, Dungeons & Dragons, Wizardry (series), BioWare, Mass Effect, BioShock, Dishonored, CD Project Red, Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur's Gate III, Thief, Robin Hood, VtM Bloodlines, Undertale, Dark Souls, Land of the Lost, Dwarf Fortress, Planescape: Torment, Metroid / Castlevania, Richard Garriott, Sasha, Pikmin, Nintendo, Shigeru Miyamoto, Switch, PlayStation, Analog Pocket, Ashton Herrmann, Monkey Island, Wing Commander, Morrowind, Fallout 3, Dragon Age: Origins, Bethesda Game Studios, Blizzard, World of Warcraft, Diablo (series), Metal Gear Solid V, Hideo Kojima, Saint's Row IV, Call of Cthulhu, Asher, Cuphead, KyleAndError, Hitman, FFSZilla, MGS: VR Missions, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia.
