Send us a textDemonic PossessionIt's obvious that we have thoughts. What's a little less obvious is that sometimes . . . our thoughts have us.That's probably how the phrase “The Devil made me do it” came to be.Because let's be honest — thoughts can feel like they've taken over the house. And yes, they do have a grip on us. But here's the good news: you can hand them their walking papers.Years ago,The Grasshopper said something that stuck with me: “You're not possessed by a thought once you notice it.”That moment — the moment of noticing — is where freedom shows up. That's when the demon loses its power. Now, it's easy to see how ancient people came up with the idea of demonic possession. If something is yelling awful things in your head, won't leave, and refuses to be reasoned with . . . I mean, what else would you call it?So do you need an exorcism?Nah.The only ritual required . . . is noticing. When you notice a thought, you open the door for it to leave. And like any worthwhile habit, noticing takes a little practice.Because thoughts are the ultimate couch potatoes. They want to get comfortable, kick their shoes off, and stay way longer than the three days Benjamin Franklin warned us about. And they're loud. Insulting. Threatening. Crass. Completely inappropriate. But here's an overlooked fact — it's your house. You can show them the door anytime. How?Just pause and notice the thought while it's happening. Don't argue with it. Don't scold it. Don't try to win.Just notice it.That small bit of attention cracks the door open . . . and the thought tends to slither right out. Now, make no mistake — this isn't a one-time deal. They'll be back. They love free room and board. And oh, do they love a good argument. The key is practice. The better you get at noticing, the less often they stop by.So if you want freedom from the demon, and haven't written to Santa yet, consider asking for a truly valuable possession — the gift of noticing. All the best,John

S3 E19 Quirky Dogs Need A Home  In this warm, whimsical, and deeply human episode, Bob Cutler sits down with Bangor Humane Society's Kathryn Ravenscraft for a "fun-filled," "pun-filled" chat  about cocktails, laughs, and  quirky rescue animals. The two touch on responsible pet ownership, generosity, and how compassion, prevention, and community support keep families—and pets—together. Key Topics 1. Quirky Animals Need the Right People Not every dog or cat -- or donkey -- fits a traditional household. Kathryn explains how no-kill shelters commit to animals with anxiety, trauma, or special needs—sometimes for years—while waiting for the right match. 2. Prevention Over Surrender The Humane Society's food pantry and community partnerships focus on keeping animals out of shelters altogether by supporting families before crisis forces surrender. 3. Responsibility, Not Romance From emotional-support animals to holiday adoptions, the episode stresses that pets are lifelong commitments—not gifts or impulse decisions. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for November 9, 2025 is: improvident • im-PRAH-vuh-dunt • adjective Improvident is a formal word used to describe something that does not foresee or provide for the future, especially with regard to money. An improvident relationship, habit, or practice is financially unwise or impractical. // The directors were blasted at the committee hearing for their improvident use of public money. See the entry > Examples: “The problem is worst in affluent countries like the U.S., where more than two hundred pounds of food per person get thrown away each year. ‘Even modest food waste reductions would translate into considerable cumulative savings,' Smil observes. Then, there's the waste that results from improvident eating habits. If photosynthesis has a low conversion rate, feeding crops to animals compounds the problem many times over.” — Elizabeth Kolbert, The New Yorker, 23 June 2025 Did you know? Improvident describes someone's actions or habits as being unwise with regard to saving or providing for the future. It's a formal word, but the behavior it describes is well illustrated by many of the stories people hear or read as children, including some of the world's oldest. In Aesop's fable “The Ant and the Grasshopper,” the grasshopper could certainly be called improvident—he spends all summer singing and dancing while the ant works hard to prepare for winter by storing food, and at the end of the short tale is cold and starving. While today improvident is used mostly in the context of money, and those who are irresponsible with it, one can be improvident with other things (such as time or food), even happily. In another children's tale, The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies, author Beatrix Potter introduces the titular family of bunnies, sleepy from eating too much lettuce, as follows: “they were very improvident and cheerful.”

If that isn't your platform and you want me to create one for you for yours, D.M. me on Instagram or drop a comment on the YouTube post; happy to do it.It's Episode 189 then and this is my first crack at a discography-series installment all by my lonesome.I was explaining this to my son earlier in the week, and he was not only curious but felt bad for me having to do one alone. And then he was stunned when I told him how much longer it takes to record and produce an episode without a guest as well as how much shorter the final product is.Anyway...I started poking around at the J.J. Cale catalog a few months ago, and I've finally made it through all 15 albums three times. And I really can't tell you what a delight it's been. Now the challenge will be to avoid my favorites (the playlist), and really step away from his work for a little bit so that it'll be somewhat fresh and enjoyable when I feel like revisiting. There is so much to appreciate within Cale's rich collection. Crafty lyrics, stellar musicianship from all involved, groove, funk, blues, dexterity, love, lust, companionship, and so on. Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to guest Radames Pera on part two of our conversation about growing up a child actor to actress Lisa Pera. Like episode one of our conversation last week, we dig into some really intense and really dark places that have to be heard to be believed. As the young Grasshopper on the 70s TV show Kung Fu to an eventual, genuine teen heartthrob thanks to his role as John Jr. on Little House on the Prairie, we learn on this episode that all that glitters is not gold. On this episode we get a deep dive into the aforementioned Coogan's Law that was put on the books in 1939 so that child actors were protected by law from parents benefiting financially from their career. Or so we are told. Laws are only good when enforced and Radames lays out the intense, jaw-dropping details of how the law failed him by his very own mother. We also learn of Radames' mother, actress Lisa Pera hoarding disorder in her later years that was so bad, Radames felt the need to document it on YouTube. And while we discuss this in depth, the videos are hard to watch. Moreover, the home in the videos is the one Radamas grew up in. It's a tough watch. This episode has layers upon layers of really difficult emotions that we tackle only through the honesty and genuine candor of our guest. This one is a rough one and one for the ages. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story.

Swainson's Hawks make an incredible journey every year, migrating 12,000 miles round-trip from North America's prairies to Argentina's pampas. What makes them truly unique is their diet. Most hawks hunt rodents and reptiles, but Swainson's Hawks switch to insects, feasting on grasshoppers and locusts in South America. In the 1990s, this diet nearly led to disaster when pesticides in Argentina killed over 20,000 hawks in two years. But a successful international conservation effort saved them.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. Many communities face an uneven food landscape: plenty of cheap junk food, but few places to buy fresh, healthy food. This pattern—often called “food apartheid”—doesn't happen by accident; it grows from redlining, unfair rules, and corporate control. The impacts are steep: higher rates of type 2 diabetes, kidney failure, and learning problems in Black, Latino, and Indigenous communities, along with unsafe conditions for farmworkers. These harms have a long history, and government subsidies and convincing marketing keep ultraprocessed foods on top. However, we take practical steps to make change including investing in regenerative and community farms, protecting and fairly paying farmworkers, and enforcing civil-rights laws so public dollars support real food, healthy soil, and communities that thrive. In this episode, Leah Penniman, Dr. Rupa Marya, Raj Patel, Karen Washington, and I discuss why food injustices exist and how we can create regenerative food systems to serve everyone. Leah Penniman is a Black Kreyol educator, farmer/peyizan, author, and food justice activist from Soul Fire Farm in Grafton, NY. She co-founded Soul Fire Farm in 2010 with the mission to end racism in the food system and reclaim our ancestral connection to land. As co-Executive Director, Leah is part of a team that facilitates powerful food sovereignty programs - including farmer training for Black & Brown people, a subsidized farm food distribution program for communities living under food apartheid, and domestic and international organizing toward equity in the food system. Leah has been farming since 1996, holds an MA in Education and a BA in Environmental Science from Clark University, and is a Manye (Queen Mother) in Vodun.  Dr. Rupa Marya is a physician, activist, mother, and composer. She is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco where she practices and teaches Internal Medicine. Her research examines the health impacts of social systems, from agriculture to policing. She is a co-founder of the Do No Harm Coalition, a collective of health workers committed to addressing disease through structural change. At the invitation of Lakota health leaders, she is currently helping to set up the Mni Wiconi Health Clinic and Farm at Standing Rock in order to decolonize medicine and food.  Raj Patel is a Research Professor at the University of Texas at Austin's Lyndon B Johnson School of Public Affairs, a professor in the University's department of nutrition, and a Research Associate at Rhodes University, South Africa. He is the author of Stuffed and Starved, the New York Times bestselling The Value of Nothing, co-author of A History of the World in Seven Cheap Things. A James Beard Leadership Award winner, he is the co-director of the award-winning documentary about climate change and the food system, The Ants & The Grasshopper.  Karen is a farmer, activist, and food advocate. She is the Co-owner and Farmer at Rise & Root Farm in Chester, New York. In 2010, Karen Co-Founded Black Urban Growers (BUGS), an organization supporting growers in both urban and rural settings. In 2012, Ebony magazine voted her one of the 100 most influential African Americans in the country, and in 2014 Karen was the recipient of the James Beard Leadership Award. When they're caught, the items in their car tell an awful, and bloodthirsty story!!   Along the way, we find out that some towns entire populations can be wiped out, in a single act, that if you decide to stay overnight, in Kingman, Arizona, you're probably up to no good, and that after you murder some people, you might want to at least wipe their brain matter off your shirt, before going out in public!!   New episodes, every Wednesday & Friday nights!!
