Her son began his transition at the age of eleven, at a time when many people were unfamiliar with the concept of transgender identity, and there were limited resources and support available. She shares how she relentlessly pursued medical care, education, and support for her son, eventually leading to the founding of TransFamily Support Services eight years ago. Since then, the organization has served over 4,000 transgender individuals and their families across the country.The conversation touches on various aspects of the organization's work, including support groups, mentorship programs, family coaching, insurance and medical navigation, and educational initiatives. Kathie highlights the importance of creating affirming and supportive environments for transgender individuals, especially children and teens. We zijn twee weken verder, Pasen is net voorbij, maar Tamar broedt nog op haar ei. Sophie en Tamar zijn namelijk begonnen aan de cyclus waarin er een diepvries-embryo zal worden teruggeplaatst. Tamar moet elke paar dagen een echo laten maken om te kijken of haar baarmoederslijmvlies al dik genoeg is, en het ei groot genoeg. En al dat heen en weer gereis naar het ziekenhuis levert veel rolstoel- en regiotaxigedoe op. Verder praten we over hoe het is om andere kinderen geboren te zien worden en of dat wel of niet confronterend is, vertelt Tamar dat ze in acupunctuur is gaan geloven maar dat het ook gewoon een fijne copingstrategie is, en gaat Sophie vijf minuten lang op zoek naar een papier dat Tamar is kwijtgeraakt (ondertussen, vijf weken later, hebben we hem eindelijk gevonden). We vertellen hoe ze in het ziekenhuis omgaan met Sophie’s transheid en Tamars handicap. On the 3 of February at the 2019 Victorian Pride March, the Daniel Andrews Government announced that gay conversion therapy would be banned in Victoria - making this state the first in Australia to make this ban. We chat with Sally Goldner from Transgender Victoria and later in the show we hear from Tony Briffa from Intersex Human Rights Australia. Tony is one of Australia’s first intersex advocates, appearing on 60 Minutes in 2000 and 2005, and published in Nature in 2004. Tony more recently presented a statement to the UN Human Rights Council, in 2014. She is also a councillor of Hobsons Bay in Melbourne, the first openly intersex person elected to public office and the world’s first openly intersex Mayor.
