Pregnantish Pride: Why Trystan Reese is a Trans Fertility Advocate

Pregnantish

In this special Pregnantish Pride episode, we're honored to welcome Trystan Reese — speaker, educator, and trailblazing trans dad — for a candid conversation about parenthood, advocacy, and what it means to build a family in a non-linear way. Trystan made headlines as a transgender man to publicly share his journey of carrying a biological child. But behind the media frenzy was a deeply personal decision — rooted in love and the desire to expand his family with his partner, Biff. While his story was often sensationalized, Trystan has remained committed to educating others and speaking out, not just for himself, but for the broader trans community — especially trans women, who he says too often bear the brunt of bias and misinformation. In this episode, Trystan reflects on how his family — which includes three beautiful children, two through adoption — is both ordinary and extraordinary. He opens up about the need for fertility clinics to better understand trans patients, the harmful assumptions people make, and why it's so important to amplify positive stories about trans families, especially in a time of rising negativity and erasure. As Trystan puts it, his family — like so many others — took the broken shards of glass life gave them and turned them into a beautiful mosaic. Thanks to our episode sponsor, Ferring Pharmaceuticals' Fertility Out Loud and Director of Fertility Coaching, Connie Stark, for sharing the importance of fertility coaching for all aspiring parents, including LGBTQ+ individuals and couples. One of our core values and beliefs here at Good Life Project is that every human being, regardless of how they identify, love, practice, or live is endowed with dignity and worth, and is entitled to be treated through this lens. We also believe that every person can learn from any person, especially those who they perceive as being different from them. It's a big part of the reason we're always seeking to share a rich tapestry of voices on the podcast. The moment we close ourselves off to those we perceive as other, whether from fear, lack of knowledge or lived experience, we close ourselves off to a part of ourselves and of life that could have made our days so much richer. And, we shrink our worlds and lives along the way.So, as we head into this year's Trans Day of Visibility, we wanted to share a selection of moments, ideas and awakening from a few deeply-moving conversations we've had over the years with some incredible, big-hearted, and wise humans who also happen to identify as transgender, and have chosen to make it their life's work to step into conversation with others to share their experience. Not just of being transgender, but also of moving through a world that often misunderstands, labels, and ostracizes on a level that leads to injustice, rising at times to violence and suffering. These conversations aren't just about transgender life, though, they're about life, the way we choose to relate to each other, hear and see each other, acknowledge our shared humanity, and choose to either expand our horizons and our lives, or contract both. What does it mean to be White and LGBTQIA+? Here we sit down with Trystan Reese (seriously, just Google him) to talk about what it means to hold the identities of White and LGBTQIA+ in the US today. Some questions include: What does it mean to be a person who is both White and Queer? A person who is White and trans? Is there a difference between a White Queer person and a Queer White person? What patterns are you seeing within White queer and trans community as it relates to racial justice? How do we make sense of the vast overlap in the Venn diagram of White trans and queer culture and cancel culture? How do we show up intersectionally? Trystan Reese is an established thought leader, educator, and speaker, focusing on issues of transgender inclusion, social and gender justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Do you check in on your relationships? In this week's episode, Trystan Reese (he/him) shares about his days of being a drag king and how he's been performing as a man since he was a kid. Learn about some of the practices he's adopted to check in with his colleagues so that they're in a continuous feedback loop, including addressing power dynamics and microaggressions. We also discuss a bit of what it's like to be trainers and consultants and the work that goes into it, including figuring out our boundaries and doing the work to know how to facilitate conversations. Trystan talks about how moved he was by Alok's talk on the podcast Man Enough and how well they were able to articulate thoughts that have been circling in his own mind. Some self-reflection: What does being a man mean to me, whether or not I am one? Do I know any men who have been or are pregnant? Have I ever reported something on social media? What happened? Which lenses do I view the world in? Are there any resentments I've been carrying? When's the last time I checked in on my relationships? Resources, references, and full transcripts for each episode are available at www.allyshipisaverb.com Host Chris Angel (they/them) has a background in LGBTQ+ education, community organizing, and social work. Today's interview is with Trystan Reese. Up until now every single person that you've met has been somebody who's a good friend of mine, and a lot of the other interviews are going to be good friends of mine. I'm so blessed, first of all to have a lot of friends. I'm a huge extrovert so I love people and I've been an out queer for 30 years, so I just know a lot of people that are out. So I'm very very blessed to have mostly my friends coming to talk to me. This person Trystan is a friend of mine but he's not somebody who I know very well. We are mostly acquaintances and colleagues. I was introduced to Trystan by another trans guy because Trystan and I have a lot in common. We are both family humans, we are both people who love family and who have children and who are creating family, and I believe that that's how we met is we had another friend in common that knew that we were both parents of trans kids and/or kids in general and so we hooked up that way and just know each other as colleagues and another trans human out there making a huge difference. So Trystan actually is a consultant around race. He spends his time mostly helping white people deal with their fragility, helping white people have difficult conversations around race, and he has been an out trans human for a long time and the level of generosity that I want you to get of him coming on this show and sharing his story. So every single person that comes on this show and shares their story is putting their life in danger. I mean, let's get real about this. For trans people to be out it's a thing, right. Some people think it's a political act. I've been out since I was 18 and I can't ever imagine not being out. And so for me it's just who I am and what I do. And there's a difference between being out and being OUT, right? And so I'm really out there and a lot of the people that I've interviewed have been really out there and Trystan's one of them, and I find that to be generous. I feel like that is a hugely generous act, that he is willing to come on here and share his story. So I want to honor Trystan, I want to thank Trystan for coming on and sharing his story and I'm excited for you to hear his story and to hopefully learn from this really cool human. Welcome, Trystan Reese. You can follow Trystan on Instagram @biffandi and take a look at the work his organizations Trans Fertility Co. and Collaborate Consulting are doing. Don't forget to check out his recently published book How We Do Family as well. NEW GENDER REVEAL EVERY WEEK Each week we release a new video interview with another human being that has something to say about gender. Our goal is for our audience to understand that gender is a construct that was all made up and it's way more fluid than any of us can fathom. Penises and vulvae are sex parts, not gender. Gender and genitals are NOT the same thing. These weekly stories are about gender reveal. Most importantly these interviews feature stories of my friends, colleagues and acquaintances who have powerful things to say about gender and their journey of walking through the world as someone considered as "other".

Coming out as trans was a journey--in the 90s we didn't have a lot of role models in the media for what was possible in gender and sexuality. Trystan's coming out story is the funniest I've ever heard. "My calling on this planet is to bring balance. My guest this week is Trystan Reese, who starred as Yitzhak in the original LA production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. From an early age, Trystan was laser focused on going to Broadway and becoming a famous actor. But the experience of being an actor, it turns out, helped him learn about passions he never knew he had, and shaped him into the advocate and dad that he is today. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, a reminder that The Sewers of Paris is on Twitter and Facebook — I post clips of the stuff that we talk about on each episode. And big thanks to everyone who makes the Sewers of Paris possible with a pledge of support on Patreon! It's been a really soothing way to kick back and hang out and get away from the daily stress of, you know, everything. While Trystan has been living as a man for the past 15 years, he was raised and socialized as a female for his first 18 years. That gives him an intimate understanding of both sides of the gender spectrum – including insight into which aspects are biological or hormonal and which are societal. Here are some of the great moments he shared with us: 10:20 – The conversations gay men have BEFORE they start dating that other couples don’t (but should!) have 17:35 – An important thing we can learn from Trystan’s strategy of revealing that he’s trans 21:30 – Why our relationship to our body is more important than the shape of our body when we’re starting a new relationship 35:30 – Should we be telling little girls that they’re beautiful? 41:14 – How Trystan’s stay-at-home-dad partner manages his energy so he has enough left over for sex In this episode, we mentioned the following resources: Podcast - Dan Savage’s SavageLove podcast Book - Cory Silverberg’s book “What Makes A Baby” Book - Cory Silverberg’s book “Sex Is A Funny Word” Trystan’s website: www.BiffandI.com The interviews for this podcast usually at least a half hour longer than we have space to fit into an episode.
