Violence against women and girls is a persistent and escalating crisis and remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations worldwide. From femicide and domestic abuse to online harassment and conflict-related sexual violence, the scale and severity of gender-based violence continues to deepen across every region. Despite international commitments to gender equality, many legal frameworks are still insufficient, impunity persists, and survivors are too often met with stigma rather than support. In her address to the IIEA, Reem Alsalem, the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, explores global trends in the fight to end such violence, highlighting both promising practices and persistent gaps. About the Speaker: Ms. Reem Alsalem was appointed United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, its causes and consequences in July 2021 by the UN Human Rights Council. She is an independent consultant on gender issues, the rights of refugees and migrants, transitional justice, and humanitarian response. She has consulted extensively for United Nations departments, agencies, and programmes such as UN-Women, OHCHR, UNICEF, and IOM, as well as for non-governmental organisations, think tanks, and academia. Previously, she worked as an international civil servant, serving with the UNHCR in thirteen countries. During her service, she planned, implemented, and monitored programmes that served to protect persons that were survivors of gender-based violence, particularly women and girls. She was also a visiting professional with the Prosecutor's Office of the ICC from January to March 2009 and a visiting Researcher with the Feinstein International Centre of Tufts University in December 2008. She holds a Master's in International Relations from the American University in Cairo and a Masters in Human Rights Law from the University of Oxford.

Ministers speak with reporters on Parliament Hill as the Cabinet Committee on Canada-U.S. Relations and National Security meets. They face questions on Canada's ongoing trade disputes with the U.S. and China and U.S. President Donald Trump's recent comments that he would rather deal with a liberal than a conservative government in Canada.   Speaking with reporters are ministers François-Philippe Champagne (finance),  Jonathan Wilkinson (energy and natural resources), Rachel Bendayan (immigration), Kody Blois (agriculture), and Steven MacKinnon (jobs and families).    Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly also discusses China's recent execution of several Canadian citizens for “drug-related crime.”  the members of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine spoke to journalists in Geneva about their latest report to the UN Human Rights Council. The Chair of the Fact-Finding Mission, Erik Møse, and the two other expert members, Vrinda Grover and Pablo de Greiff, participated in a press conference held at the United Nations Office at Geneva. The Secretary-General is still in Brussels today, and a few hours ago, he took part in a working lunch with the Heads of State and Government of the European Union. As we mentioned, he was invited by the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa – and this lunch took place at the opening of the European Council.  The Secretary-General and Mr. Costa spoke to the press as they entered the European Union building. Mr. Guterres expressed his appreciation for our partnership with the EU, reiterating that it is a fundamental pillar of the multilateral response to the challenges we face in peace and security, climate, sustainable development, and human rights.   Turning to the situation in Ukraine, the Secretary-General said any ceasefire is welcome because it saves lives, but he added that it is essential that a ceasefire paves the way for a just peace in Ukraine – a peace that respects the UN Charter, international law, and Security Council resolutions, namely about the territorial integrity of Ukraine.   The Secretary-General renewed his appeal for respect of the ceasefire in Gaza, for unimpeded humanitarian access to all areas of Gaza, and for the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages. His full remarks have been shared with you.                                                                 Tomorrow, the Secretary-General will deliver remarks in Leuven, where the universities KU Leuven and UC Louvain will jointly award an honorary doctorate to the United Nations. Netanyahu supports Trump's plan for Palestinian expulsion from Gaza "Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has defended US President Donald Trump's controversial proposal of Palestinian ethnic cleansing from Gaza, asking in a Fox News interview, ""What's wrong with that?"" He suggested that Gaza residents could leave, return or relocate as part of so-called rebuilding efforts. Meanwhile, Israel is officially pulling out of the UN Human Rights Council or UNHRC, aligning with Trump's move. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar declared, “Israel joins the US and will not participate in the UNHRC.”" Türkiye, Germany urge global action for two-state solution "Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier are calling for urgent global action to secure a lasting ceasefire in Gaza and revive the two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. Speaking in Ankara, both leaders stressed the need for diplomacy and adherence to international law. ""As the international community, we must continue our efforts for a two-state solution,"" Erdogan said. Steinmeier also slammed Donald Trump's proposal to expel Palestinians, calling it “unacceptable.”" Russia, Ukraine swap 150 prisoners of war with UAE mediation "Russia and Ukraine each returned 150 servicemen, marking another step in ongoing negotiations. Russia's Defence Ministry confirmed its troops are in Belarus for medical and psychological care before heading home. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hailed the return of troops from various military branches, calling it “a good day.” Both nations thanked the United Arab Emirates for brokering the deal, signaling continued diplomatic efforts despite the war's relentless toll." UN reports 2,800 deaths in DRC's Goma due to escalating violence "The death toll from the fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo's eastern city of Goma has surpassed 2,800, according to the United Nations. Despite a declared ceasefire, the M23 rebel group, backed by Rwandan forces, has resumed its offensive, seizing key areas. The intense fighting has sparked international concern, with fears of a wider regional conflict. Diplomatic efforts are underway to de-escalate the situation. However, the renewed violence persists, with ongoing concerns about its impact on the civilian population." "A federal judge in the US has issued a nationwide injunction blocking President Trump's executive-order seeking to end birthright citizenship for children born in the country to undocumented immigrants. The judge ruled that the order violates the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which guarantees citizenship to all persons born or naturalised in the United States. This is the second court to block the order, which has been met with widespread legal challenges. The Trump administration has argued that children born in the US to undocumented immigrants are not ""subject to the jurisdiction"" of the United States and therefore not entitled to citizenship."

There is a difference between being anti-war, pro-peace, and simply saying you are while your actions invoke conflict. How the United States is handling the Israel situation is not smart, America first, or part of some 4D chess game; it is a direct assault with a public plan and potential consequences that include more global conflict, especially with Arab nations. With the president's plan to take ownership of Gaza and bring “great stability” comes the ethnic cleansing of its people, the expansion of Israel, and the payoff of luxury vacation spots for the wealthy. It's the playbook of Jared Kushner who called it “oceanfront property” back in February 2024. The first payoff came with the naming of Trump Heights. The second will be hotels Gaza, as a NYT article put it in October 2024: “The Trump Organization was in talks about Israeli hotels before the Hamas attack last year.” Trump supporters are saying it's a strategic 4D chess move to take the land from Israel; it's actually the opposite. It's a blatant case of the big brother taking something for the little brother. Others are saying let's wait to see what happens, or ‘do you have a better idea', or ‘you just want to see more Jews killed'. But we are seeing what's happening, and the better idea would be to follow Washington's advice: "It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliance with any portion of the foreign world.” Washington even warned about countries like Israel and the danger of political parties in creating favoritism toward the former: “It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which finds a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another.”And what is happening domestically is just as bad. The cleaning out of the USAID, CIA, FBI, etc., all sounds great, but what MAGA neglects to realize is that the house cleaning is due to new tenants who believe in expansionism and technocracy not liberty, from Musk to Altman and Ellison. The money being saved is going to be relocated to programs like STARGATE and to countries like Israel, which is exempt from nearly every major action, including foreign aid and weapons sales with another $1 billion being allocated for Israel this week: 4,700 1,000-pound bombs, worth more than $700 million, as well as armored bulldozers built by Caterpillar, worth more than $300 million. Furthermore, all the things once rejected by Christians, conservatives, and conspiracy theorists are now being demanded: cryptocurrency, the North American Union, DNA specific injections, support of the Deep State (Israel), etc. And nearly all the major issues for Republicans, and especially MAGA, are supported by Israel: porn, pedophilia, LGBTQ, transgender surgeries and hormones, circumcision, DEI and racism, and illegal immigration. In fact, after a letter protesting Trump's deportation policy was signed by 88 Jewish organizations, including HIAS, it only took a few days for many illegals to be set free as NBC News reported: "some have already been released back into the United States on a monitoring program.” Israel also wants criticism in the U.S. silenced, and that is exactly what Trump has continued during his second term: “my administration will inform every college president that if you do not end anti-semitic propaganda they will lose their accreditation and federal taxpayer support.”  This has led to the arrest of protesters and a muzzling of debate. Even the so-called peace agreement and ceasefire has been violated numerous times by Israel with no mention by either party, let alone repercussions. Now the U.S. Justice Department, coming off 4 years of weaponization against conservatives, is going to be weaponized via a task force to “fight antisemitism in schools and universities,” or effectively to go after Democrats, while the Department of Education, set to be dismantled, will spend its final days “investigating five universities for alleged antiseptic harassment.” This is alongside the censorship operations of any criticism of Israel. The U.S. is also withdrawing from the UN Human Rights Council, not because of MAGA, but because they support supplying food and water to Gaza. Ever notice why Republicans attack China and Islam, while Democrats attack Russia and white Christians, yet Israel and Jews are always untouchable?There is no longer any intelligent person who can say Israel, at the very least through tightly knit and mutually beneficial backdoor deals, doesn't control the United States of America. The little messes Trump is cleaning up were made by the same people giving him obvious marching orders so that he is presented as a hero while Israel raids our treasury. Probably why Israel's PM brought Trump a golden pager at their first meeting; so he could be on call for the real Deep State. Although the use of mercenaries in conflict has increased in recent years, little is known about how they are funded and paid.The issue is the focus of the latest report by the Working Group on the use of mercenaries, which was presented to the UN General Assembly this week.Jovana Jezdimirovic Ranito is the Chair-Rapporteur of the Working Group, which receives its mandate from the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.She spoke to UN News's Dianne Penn about the difficulties in tracking financing for foreign fighters and how bankrolling them negatively impacts human rights, sustainable development and the environment. 

On August 1, the United States and Russia conducted a landmark prisoner exchange involving 16 people – the first of its kind since 1986 – which resulted in the release of several leading Russian dissidents. Among those freed was opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza, who recently visited UN Headquarters in New York with Mariana Katzarova, the UN Human Rights Council-appointed independent expert – or Special Rapporteur – who monitors the Russian Federation, to introduce her new report to the General Assembly.In an interview with UN News's Nargiz Shekinskaya, Mr. Kara-Murza reflected on his recent release, Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and the ongoing human rights crisis in his homeland.He underscored the "horrendous" scale of political imprisonment in Russia, where over 1,300 political prisoners are currently held, and countless others remain invisible.

The Chairperson of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and Israel, on Wednesday presented the commission's latest investigative report to the UN General Assembly.Navi Pillay and her UN Human Rights Council-appointed team found that Israel has carried out a policy to destroy Gaza's healthcare system as part of a broader assault; committed war crimes, and deliberately attacked medical personnel and facilities.The report goes on to conclude that Israel – and Palestinian armed groups – are responsible for torture and sexual and gender-based violence, and that Israeli security forces have deliberately killed, detained and tortured medical personnel.Ahead of her briefing to the General Assembly, Conor Lennon from UN News sat down with Ms. Pillay in the UN News studios, and he started by asking her to recall a particularly harrowing case mentioned in the report: the killing of Hind Rajab, a five-year-old girl, and her extended family, as well as the paramedics who tried to rescue her. 

The UN Human Rights Council consists of 47 member states that serve three-year terms. They are elected to their seats by a vote in the General Assembly. Unlike most General Assembly votes, this one is done by secret ballot. On October 9, the UN General Assembly considered 19 candidates for 18 open seats on the Human Rights Council. The loser? Saudi Arabia. Abiodun Williams is Professor of the Practice of International Politics at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and The Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University.  He was Director of Strategic Planning to UN Secretaries-General Kofi Annan and Ban Ki-moon and is past Chair of the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS).  His latest book is “Kofi Annan and Global Leadership at the United Nations.” Annan was a proactive leader who launched monumental programs that improved the UN, such as the Responsibility to Protect (R2P), the UN Human Rights Council, the UN Global Compact and the Millennium Development Goals, which were the precursors to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Annan was also a transformational visionary who strengthened UN peacekeeping and involved academia, NGOs and the private sector in helping overcome many international problems. Annan was quite accurate in his critique of President Bush's illegal invasion of Iraq.

Yessie Mosby is one of the so-called Torres Strait Eight, a group from the Pacific islands that has filed a complaint with the UN Human Rights Council. Their complaint — that Australia is not doing enough to protect its people from climate change — was the first case of its kind. For the four siblings and parents of 23-year-old Hamas hostage, Romi Gonen, life has been totally upended since October 7, 2023. . Her mother, Meirav Leshem Gonen, older sister Yarden and her father, Eitan, were on the phone with her for four hours that morning. From the very first moments of the Hamas attack she was in near constant contact with one of them. They heard everything. In separate podcasts in January (links are in the notes, below), I interviewed both Meirav and Eitan. They spoke in detail about those surreal hours when no one understood the scope of the attack. But their Romi was in the vortex of the unfolding Hell and thank goodness she had a charged phone so that they could support her. Until, that is, the Hamas monsters pulled her from the car where she was trapped, with a bullet in her arm. (All this is discussed in detail in the January podcasts.) Not until some hostages were released in late November did the family receive confirmation that Romi was alive.For nine months they have been among the hostage families at the forefront of efforts to ensure that the ongoing savagery of Hamas is not forgotten. They are at the United Nations, meeting with government leaders, groups and individuals visiting Israel, media, anyone and everyone who demonstrates an interest in the desperate plight of the hostages. I have met with Meirav and other family members on numerous occasions. This episode is a special focus on what their lives have become.When I was in Geneva recently on June 19 (total coincidence), I was invited to watch Meirav Leshem Gonen address the opening plenary session of the UN Human Rights Council, at which Navi Pillay, Chair of the latest Commission of Inquiry into Israel's conduct since October 7th, presented her “findings”. Not only is the Commission yet another UN farce, but the tenor of the proceedings contrasted so sharply with the dignity of Meirav. Peasant Politics of the Twenty-First Century: Transnational Social Movements and Agrarian Change (Cornell University Press, 2024) by Dr. Marc Edelman illuminates the transnational agrarian movements that are remaking rural society and the world's food and agriculture systems.
