What happens when life changes in an instant, and the world expects you to carry on? This week’s Money Diarist had everything in motion: a new home with a pool, $40k in savings, a baby on the way, and a backyard wedding just around the corner. But days before she was meant to walk down the aisle, she faced the unimaginable: her daughter was stillborn. In this deeply personal and courageous conversation, she opens up about what came next; grappling with grief, navigating systems that weren’t built for moments like this, and trying to stay afloat when everything felt like it was sinking. From Centrelink confusion and being forced back to work too soon, to finding moments of light in Taylor Swift concerts, this is a story of love, loss, and learning how to begin again. Roscoe has been pivotal in establishing networks and connections with the Indigenous people of Kanaky (so-called New Caledonia) in their fight against the French occupation to reclaim their land. Through his work we learn that colonial systems are not the only thing that can duplicate and expand borders -- so can Indigenous knowledge and solidarity. If we keep saying we're on “Treaty Territories”… why don't we give it back? Do land acknowledgements actually help Indigenous peoples—or are they just empty words designed to ease guilt? This week, David Leis is joined by Frances Widdowson (Expert on Aboriginal Policy), John Carpay (Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms), and Marco Navarro-Genie (VP of Research at the Frontier Centre) to unpack one of the most controversial questions in Canada today: What do land acknowledgements really mean—and are they doing more harm than good?
The Context of White Supremacy welcomes David Fritz Fortune. A Morehouse College graduate, filmmaker, and proud resident of Atlanta, Mr. Fortune uses art to share refreshing portraits about black people resisting Racism in different ways. Gus T. immersed in this year's Seattle International Film Festival and caught about three dozens films. Almost all of them focused explicitly on the global System of White Supremacy. There were so many films at the 51st SIFF, Gus nearly missed Mr. Fortune's COLOR BOOK, which touchingly examines being a black father in Atlanta. After the sudden loss of a black mother and wife, Mr. Fortune captures the bond and grief shared between a black father, played by Will Catlett, and his son, portrayed by Jeremiah Daniels. COLOR BOOK showcases a black parent raising a child with disabilities and the daily impediments - like parenting while black and without a car - to living in metro Atlanta. We'll ask Mr. Fortune why he wanted to showcase this black father/son relationship and if intentionally made a film without White characters. Summary In this article, I argue most of the interesting cross-cause prioritization decisions and conclusions rest on philosophical evidence that isn't robust enough to justify high degrees of certainty that any given intervention (or class of cause interventions) is “best” above all others. I hold this to be true generally because of the reliance of such cross-cause prioritization judgments on relatively weak philosophical evidence. In particular, the case for high confidence in conclusions on which interventions are all things considered best seems to rely on particular approaches to handling normative uncertainty. The evidence for these approaches is weak and different approaches can produce radically different recommendations, which suggest that cross-cause prioritization intervention rankings or conclusions are fundamentally fragile and that high confidence in any single approach is unwarranted. I think the reliance of cross-cause prioritization conclusions on philosophical evidence that isn't robust has been previously underestimated in EA circles [...] ---Outline:(00:14) Summary(06:03) Cause Prioritization Is Uncertain and Some Key Philosophical Evidence for Particular Conclusions is Structurally Weak(06:11) The decision-relevant parts of cross-cause prioritization heavily rely on philosophical conclusions(09:26) Philosophical evidence about the interesting cause prioritization questions is generally weak(17:35) Aggregation methods disagree(21:27) Evidence for aggregation methods is weaker than empirical evidence of which EAs are skeptical(24:07) Objections and Replies(24:11) Aren't we here to do the most good? / Aren't we here to do consequentialism? / Doesn't our competitive edge come from being more consequentialist than others in the nonprofit sector?(25:28) Can't I just use my intuitions or my priors about the right answers to these questions? I agree philosophical evidence is weak so we should just do what our intuitions say(27:27) We can use common sense / or a non-philosophical approach and conclude which cause area(s) to support. For example, it's common sense that humanity going extinct would be really bad; so, we should work on that(30:22) I'm an anti-realist about philosophical questions so I think that whatever I value is right, by my lights, so why should I care about any uncertainty across theories? Can't I just endorse whatever views seem best to me?(31:52) If the evidence in philosophy is as weak as you say, this suggests there are no right answers at all and/or that potentially anything goes in philanthropy. If you can't confidently rule things out, wouldn't this imply that you can't distinguish a scam charity from a highly effective group like Against Malaria Foundation?(34:08) I have high confidence in MEC (or some other aggregation method) and/or some more narrow set of normative theories so cause prioritization is more predictable than you are suggesting despite some uncertainty in what theories I give some credence to(41:44) Conclusion (or well, what do I recommend?)(44:05) AcknowledgementsThe original text contained 20 footnotes which were omitted from this narration. --- First published: July 3rd, 2025 Source: https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/nwckstt2mJinCwjtB/we-should-be-more-uncertain-about-cause-prioritization-based --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO. ---Images from the article:Apple Podcasts and Spotify do not show images in the episode description. Welcome to a special bonus episode of the Military to Financial Planner Podcast! I'm Daniel Kopp, and today I'm joined by my SkillBridge intern, Russ Meyer, for the inaugural session of our PME Book Club. We're diving deep into "Advice That Sticks: How to Give Financial Advice That People Will Follow" by Dr. Moira Somers—one of my hands-down favorite books for any financial planner, and honestly, for anyone who wants to make their advice more impactful in any area of life. Russ and I explore what makes advice “stick,” the science and psychology behind why people don't always follow sound, technically correct advice, and how we as professionals—and humans—can help bridge that gap. We discuss Dr. Somers' FACTS framework (Facts, Acknowledgement, Curiosity, Timing, and Support), the importance of open-ended listening, the stages of client change, and the sometimes surprising emotional complexities in the planner-client relationship. This episode isn't just for financial planners! Whether you're a parent, spouse, mentor, or just someone who genuinely wants to help others—this conversation reveals how to move from simply giving advice to fostering real, lasting change.

Ever felt like life just keeps testing you… one heartbreak after another? This week’s Money Diary isn’t just about grief, it’s about the admin that comes with it (and no one warns you about). After losing both her parents, our diarist found herself deep in paperwork, probate, Centrelink forms, and co-executor chaos… all while pregnant and juggling two little ones at home. From the emotional mess of selling the family home to navigating bank accounts, and all the estate drama, this is the side of money we don’t often talk about, but so many of us will face. And through it all? She’s budgeting, investing for her kids, and still somehow holding it together. This episode is a reminder that sometimes, surviving is the win. It starts as a simple question: should I buy a house or invest in the share market? What begins as a classic money dilemma quickly unravels into a much bigger conversation... about pressure, identity, and whether the goals we’re chasing are even ours to begin with. Plus, we tackle a seriously juicy DM about uprooting your entire family for a “life-changing” job (that may only last a few years), whether commuting ruins your happiness, and why it might be time to outsource your vacuuming. Oh, and there’s also a heated musical theatre debate and some spicy ADHD brain revelations in there too.WANT LEARN HOW TO INVEST? The Investing Masterclass is here.
