This episode of 'In the Woods' podcast, hosted by Jake Barker of Oregon State University's Extension Service, explores post-wildfire restoration on private forest lands based on the LEAF (Landowner Experience After Fire) survey. Conducted by OSU in response to the 2020 Labor Day fires, the survey gathered insights from over 200 landowners across Oregon on their recovery experiences from 2017 to 2023. Key findings were shared, including the importance of local capacity, coordination, and organizational support in driving effective recovery. Guest Kara Baylog, a program coordinator with OSU's Forestry and Natural Resources extension, discussed the survey's methodology, the barriers landowners faced, and the types of assistance that proved most effective in aiding recovery efforts. Want 2026 to be the year you get your money on track? This ep is the perfect place to start. It’s our very first Friday Drinks of the year and instead of doing the usual wins and broke tips, we asked the community two big questions. What was your biggest money learning last year? And what small change did you make that had the biggest impact on your finances? Sometimes a spreadsheet isn’t going to cut it. Sometimes the only thing standing between you and an impulse purchase is a genuinely unhinged obstacle, like freezing your credit card in a bowl of water and letting time do the work. And because our first Unhinged Hacks episode became one of the most replayed of the year, Bec took that as a sign, went rogue, booked the studio, brought Jess along, and recorded round two with absolutely no supervision. TThis episode sounds ridiculous on purpose. But underneath the laughs is something genuinely smart. These are the money behaviours people actually use when discipline is gone, motivation is fried, and “just try harder” is not on the menu. It’s diabolical. It’s chaotic. And somehow… it works. " If we're gonna ask, it needs to have something, we need to know what we're gonna do with it. Because when people know that they're supposed to ask for feedback about stuff, but they actually have no plan to incorporate any of the ideas that they get. That contributes to, you know, just this feeling of like, well, this is a checkbox, like this is a performative ask."Karen & Paul talk about how to handle feedback effectively, emphasizing the importance of having a plan for it. They stress that feedback should be solicited only if there's a genuine intention to use the information. They explore the negative impact of performative feedback requests and the importance of closing the feedback loop, either by implementing suggestions or by explaining why certain feedback won't be acted upon, to maintain trust and credibility.
If December has you replaying the year in your head, thinking about the money choices you made, the goals that shifted, or why things didn’t quite land the way you thought they would back in January, you’re not alone. A lot of us get to this point feeling tired, reflective, and a little unsure how to sum it all up. This episode is a chance to look at the year differently. Not through the lens of what you achieved or didn’t, but through the stuff you carried, adapted to, and figured out as you went. The money stress, the plans that changed, the moments you just kept going anyway. None of that was wasted, even if it didn’t feel impressive at the time. If you want to close out the year feeling a bit more grounded and a lot less hard on yourself, press play. Get Victoria's Full Goal Setting System in her Your Best Year Yet course here. It's our biggest Friday Drinks of the year so we're throwing a party aka our year in review. The stats, the moments that surprised us, and the community wins that honestly deserve more airtime... and of course your favourite blooper reel. Plus we get into which is cheaper, building vs buying a home. Building can look cheaper, especially online, but the reality is a lot messier. We talk about where the costs sneak in, why timelines matter, and why this decision feels very different depending on where you live and what stage of life you’re in. And because it’s summer, we talk credit cards. Should you get one to get through the next few months? When does it help, and when does it just make things harder later? We walk through how to think about it without shame or scare tactics. Need the team’s take on your money dilemma? This is the one conversation you need to hear before the year ends, because the way you think about money right now will shape how 2026 feels far more than any goal you set in January. So instead of rules or end-of-year pressure, Victoria and Bec share the five things they genuinely wish every person in this community would focus on before heading into 2026. These are the five big things that actually shape how money feels day to day, how confident you are making decisions, and how much energy you waste worrying about things that don’t even matter. In this ep:
This is one of those Money Diaries that starts with a decision that feels sensible at the time… and slowly reveals just how much weight it carries. When her partner suggested using her inheritance to buy property together, it felt like the right next step. The grown up one. The kind you make when you’re building a future with someone. Then the relationship ended, and that decision didn’t disappear with it. In this episode, she walks us through what happens next. The parts of property ownership no one explains when you’re in love. The confidence knock that comes from being told you’re “bad with money.” And the reality of having to step up financially before you feel ready. She also shares the systems she built to make money feel manageable again, especially with a brain that doesn’t love numbers, and the lessons she wishes she’d known before saying yes. This one is full of the stuff you don’t realise you need to know until you really, really do. Ready to binge more relatable, inspiring, and downright juicy money stories? In this short thoughtful episode, we highlight an important Australian tradition: the Acknowledgement of Country. This brief statement, often given at the start of meetings, gatherings, and public events, recognizes the Traditional Custodians of the land, honors their enduring cultural connection to it, and shows respect for Elders past and present. It's a simple but meaningful way Australians acknowledge history, presence, and identity, and it reflects a national commitment to reconciliation and cultural respect. In today's episode, we introduce Dr. Lewis Campbell, a critical care physician from Alice Springs, south of Darwin. Dr. Campbell brings his Northern Territory perspective to our clinical conversation, offering insights shaped by the unique geography, culture, and healthcare challenges of Australia's Top End.A concise, engaging listen for your commute.
If you’ve ever looked at property prices and thought, cool, guess I’ll just rent forever then, this episode is for you. Because while the white picket fence dream might feels further away than ever, that doesn’t mean property investing is completely off the table. This ep is your DIY guide to becoming a trust fund baby... a real estate investment trust fund baby. Victoria is breaks down the other way to get property exposure without a mortgage, stamp duty, or a single call about a broken hot water system aka REITs. Think shopping centres, warehouses, data centres and supermarkets… without owning the building, chasing rent, or committing your entire financial future to one postcode. In this ep:
Dr. Martin Picard, PhD, is a professor of behavioral medicine at Columbia University and an expert on how our behaviors and psychology shape cellular energy production and rates of aging. He explains that your mitochondria don't just “make energy”; they translate what you do—your mindset and your relationships—into the energy you experience as vitality or lack thereof. He explains how exercise, nutrition, sleep, meditation, and even certain thought patterns and our sense of purpose can charge our cells like batteries. He also shares findings that hair greying is the result of cellular stress and is reversible. This episode links physical and mental ‘energy' with cellular energy and provides science-supported tools to improve your physical and mental health. Read the episode show notes at hubermanlab.com. Even some of the most successful people you know started at rock bottom like $60k in debt, no job, and pretending everything is totally fine. That was Jane Lu’s life… right before she built Showpo. And today, Jane is speaking candidly about it all.The pressure to pick the “good girl” career, the fear of disappointing her parents, the panic of feeling behind while everyone else looks like they’re sprinting ahead and the moment you realise you’ve built a life around other people’s expectations and now you have to undo it. But interesting part is what came next, and nothing about it looked like the beginning of a global brand. Cofounders walked. Ideas fizzled. She was building websites in the State Library and quietly hoping no one noticed she was making it up as she went. And then, slowly, things shifted. Ex: “My favorite place to think is the bus stop on Main Street.” 3) Rearrange your paragraphs to improve flow.Sometimes a piece becomes clearer just by moving one paragraph earlier or later. Try different orders until the story feels natural and easy to follow. 4) Use simple, direct sentences.Clear and honest beats complicated every time. If a line doesn't sound like something you'd say out loud, try rewriting it so it feels more authentic. 5) Show, don't just tell.Try saying something without actually saying it. Ex: Instead of saying “I was scared,” describe what happened: “My hands shook when I reached for the door.” This helps readers feel what you felt. 6) Read your work out loud.Your ear will catch things your eyes don't—missing words, awkward phrasing, or sentences that are too long. 7) Don't worry about perfection on the first try.Start messy. You can always clean it up later. The important thing is getting the thoughts down. 8) Use specifics instead of general statements.“Food was served” is vague. “They handed me a bowl of warm chili” paints a picture. 9) Keep your reader oriented. If the story jumps in time or place, give a quick clue: “A year earlier…” or “Later that night…” 10) End with something that “lands.”This can be a final thought, a strong image, or a sentence that circles back to the beginning.Acknowledgements for Thy Neighbor: Brenda Snitzer, Executive Director of The Stewpot; Suzanne Erikson, Senior Director, Stewpot Programs; Betty Heckman, Director, Stewpot Enrichment Programs; Wendy Rojo, STREETZine Magazine Editor; Writers' Workshop Editors: Bill McKenzie, Poppy Sundeen and Dee Leone; Portrait Photography: Jesse Hornbuckle; Book Design by Les Kerr.

Send us a textThe holidays have a sneaky way of making weight loss harder than usual. In this episode, I'm talking about holiday sabotage, and that includes sabotage from other people and the sabotage we do to ourselves. As the season ramps up, weight loss can feel like it is being challenged from all sides. Family comments, food pushers, passive-aggressive coworkers, unsupportive partners, and people who think your body and your plate are open for discussion. Add old memories, emotional triggers, and holiday stress, and suddenly everything feels heavier than it should. In this episode, I break down what holiday sabotage really looks like and how to deal with it without blowing up your progress. In this episode, I cover: • What holiday sabotage actually looks like • The difference between sabotage and enabling • Why one-size-fits-all advice does not work when it comes to family and social dynamics • How emotional sabotage can be just as powerful as food • When it makes sense to speak up and when it is better to let it go • How sabotage from others can turn into self-sabotage • Why preparation matters more than perfection • How awareness can keep you out of the emotional eating spiralI also explain how to use my 3A Way system during the holidays: Awareness of what is coming Acknowledgement of how it feels Accountability for how you respondThe goal is not to have a perfect holiday season. The goal is to get through it without turning on yourself. Sometimes having a strategy is the strategy. If the holidays feel harder than you expected, you are not failing. You are human. Stop using guilt as a motivational tool and give yourself some breathing room. Thanks for watching. If you found this helpful, please like, subscribe, and share. Every December starts with good intentions and ends with the same sentence: how did I spend that much? Because Christmas has a way of turning even the most financially competent women into festive chaos elves… not because you’re “bad with money,” but because the whole season is engineered to hijack your brain. This week, Victoria unpacks the psychology behind Christmas overspending and the subtle mind games retailers play that make you feel generous when you’re actually being steered. This isn’t about being a Grinch. It’s about finally seeing the tricks for what they are, so you can have a Christmas that still feels magical, without the financial regret in January. In this ep:

You know when you’re standing in front of your overflowing wardrobe, absolutely drowning in clothes, and still somehow convincing yourself you have nothing to wear? Today’s guest knew that feeling all too well… until she decided she wasn’t buying a single new item of clothing for a whole year. Yes, Emma Edwards did the thing a lot of us love conceptually but would never have the courage, discipline, or emotional stability to actually commit to. Jess Ricci is self-admittedly in that group, so she decided to give Victoria the day off, and invite Emma into the studio to find out all about it. They dive into how what started as a “maybe this will calm my spending” experiment ended up rewiring Emma’s confidence, her habits, her body image, and the way she understood her own self-worth. Turns out the problem wasn’t the wardrobe… it was the stories she’d been telling herself every time she added something to her cart.Inside this ep:
This historic roundtable brings together one of the most explosive expert panels ever assembled to confront the truth behind the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Michael Jaco is joined by James Files, Jim Manning, and Jim Scott for a rare, unfiltered discussion that challenges the official narrative and exposes decades of government deception. James Files — the man who has publicly confessed to being the shooter on the grassy knoll — recounts the covert operations, CIA directives, intelligence handlers, and shadow-government forces that orchestrated one of the most consequential assassinations in American history. His firsthand revelations shed new light on the power structures that operated behind the scenes… and still do today. Jim Manning and Jim Scott expand the investigation, tracing the web of black-ops, political corruption, military intelligence cover-ups, and the silencing of key witnesses. Together, the panel reveals how the deep state manipulated public perception, erased evidence, and built a decades-long wall of secrecy around November 22, 1963. This conversation is a powerful reckoning — a confrontation with hidden history, covert warfare, and the machinery of government secrecy. If you think you know the JFK story, think again. This expert panel exposes the layers beneath the layers… and the truth is far more explosive than the official reports ever admitted.
As we enter the week of Thanksgiving, I thought I'd highlight the gratitude theory and the 4 A's of gratitude: Awareness, Acknowledgement, Appreciation and Action. This week is an ideal time to be reminded of the power of an attitude of gratitude. A grateful mindset can lighten us, enrich what is in front of us and help us navigate our challenges. A grateful heart shifts our own mood and positively impacts those around us. May we give thanks every day by cultivating a gratitude theory with the 4 A's. Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy the podcast!

Our very first Investing Diary has landed, and she is the perfect reminder that investing is absolutely for women like us. Before she ever opened an app, she genuinely believed investing was a world reserved for men on Wall Street. Then lockdown hit, the algorithm gods did their thing, and suddenly she was seeing finance content from women who actually looked and sounded like her. One rabbit hole later… her entire money story flipped. What started as curiosity turned into a full investing era. She binged podcasts, graduated from micro investing, and built herself a portfolio with a set-and-forget energy. Then life did what life does. First home. Wedding. New job. So she stepped back from investing and honestly forgot about her portfolio altogether. Two years later she logs back in… and realises it has grown by $20,000 while she invested exactly nothing. Inside this ep, Victoria gets pervy about it all: the ETFs doing the heavy lifting, the direct shares she bought because she could see their value, and the “accidental strategy” that is actually outperforming her partners. This one is proof that you do not need to be a man in a suit on Wall Street to grow your money in the sharemarket. You just need to start. He explains how to speak with clarity and confidence and how to be more authentic in your communication in all settings: public, work, relationships, etc. He shares how to eliminate filler words ("umm"-ing), how to overcome stage fright and how to structure messages in a way that makes audiences remember the information. He also shares how to recover gracefully if you "blank out" on stage and simple drills and frameworks that dramatically improve spontaneity, storytelling and overall communication effectiveness. This is the update you’ve all been waiting for… and a year later, she’s back to tell us what really went down. Last time we spoke, the separation was still fresh. Now the divorce is almost final, and everything that happened in between is the stuff every woman should know long before she ever needs to. We’re talking expectations versus reality, the loopholes no one warns you about, and the parts of the process that only make sense once you’re living them. She also shares the lessons she wishes she’d known sooner, how she’s navigating the big conversations with her kids, and the mindset shift that changed everything.LISTEN: To her first ep with us here. John Oakley hosts an extraordinary conversation with geneticist and archaeologist Dr. Turi King, who breaks down the science behind the recent genome sequencing of Adolf Hitler using a bloodstained relic from his Berlin bunker. From medical anomalies like Kallmann syndrome to the ethical limits of DNA in psychological profiling, King separates fact from speculation. The show also explores Toronto's performative civic acknowledgements—slavery, land, and beyond—with guests David Wills, VP at Media Profile, and National Post columnist Tristan Hopper, who challenges the rise of revisionist narratives in public ceremonies. A compelling mix of science, history, politics, and public discourse. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
You’re ready to start investing… and then someone suggests borrowing money to make your portfolio grow faster. It sounds genius in theory, but is it actually a smart move? This week we’re unpacking the financial advice one community member received about doing just that, and Victoria breaks down how these loans really work, why the maths can be seductive, and the little thing called a “margin call” that can throw your whole plan into chaos. Then we switch gears into Christmas gifting season, which is currently giving drama. Someone asked for a $300 birthday present. Gift cards are in their controversial era. And half of you are quietly switching to Secret Santa because December is expensive enough already. If you’re feeling gifting guilt creeping in, this chat will help you set boundaries without losing your festive cheer. Thanks to OnePass for sponsoring todays episode! The Farthest Reaches is a book about "Explanatory Universality". Explanatory Universality is a concept introduced by physicist and philosopher David Deutsch in his book "The Beginning of Infinity". Links, as mentioned in the audiobook can be found in the ebook available for free here: https://www.bretthall.org/the-farthest-reaches.html This present work follows the logic of that concept as it applies to education, psychology, morality, immigration, the trans issue, "evolutionary psychology" and the significance of people to physical reality and much more. This version is significantly longer and with superior audio production compared with the original podcast of the same name. Have you ever wanted to see what would happen if you actually sat down and did that budget? This week’s Money Diarist actually did it and everything changed. After hitting rock bottom, the stress of trying to keep up finally broke her. One “yes” to a holiday with her partner she couldn’t afford turned into tears in the car and the realisation that something had to give. So she did what any of us would do, opened Google and typed “female finance book”. She came across She's on the Money, read the book and decided to put everything into action... and this is her money diary 5 years on (spoiler: she's thriving).
