Why are Black women still expected to carry everything without complaint? They keep telling Black women to be strong, to push through, to hold it all together. But what they never address is the damage that message leaves behind—mentally, physically, emotionally. The burnout, the silence, the pressure to succeed at the expense of our well-being. If you've ever felt like you're doing everything right and still paying too high a price, you're not imagining it. You're navigating systems that were never designed with your safety in mind. In this special National Black Girl Month™ episode, you're invited into a powerful conversation with Dr. Vanessa Perry, global thought leader, psychologist, and CEO of The Perry Group. Alongside Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown, we explore what Superwoman Syndrome actually costs Black women—and how to stop carrying what was never ours to begin with. This episode answers the unspoken questions so many Black women ask themselves: Why do I feel like success is wearing me down? Is it possible to lead without losing myself? How do I reclaim peace when the world expects performance? Dr. Perry shares insights from over 25 years of research and executive advising in Fortune 500 companies, federal agencies, and high-level leadership spaces. Together, we discuss how to name the cycle, build supportive community, and create spaces—personally and professionally—where Black women no longer have to prove themselves to belong. This isn't just about workplace equity. It's about redefining what thriving looks like on our own terms. → Learn more and access your free toolkit at nationalblackgirlmonth.com → Join our virtual community: facebook.com/groups/nationalblackgirlmonth → Connect with Dr. Venessa Perry: https://www.linkedin.com/in/venessam/ → Connect with Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown: www.instagram.com/dr.rikesha → Connect with Felicia Ford: www.threads.net/@friendscallmefe Join Momentum Lab: https://lab.feliciafordandco.com About Dr. Venessa Perry: Dr. Venessa M. The demand for AV services accelerates, and the industry is facing a growing labor crisis. According to Field Nation, 72% of AV integrators say talent shortages are their most pressing challenge, driven by a wave of retirements, increased project complexity, and rising demand across sectors like education, healthcare, and retail. AV Integrators risk project delays and margin erosion without a new generation of skilled professionals. This puts everything from timelines to long-term growth at stake. So, how can the AV industry tap into untapped talent pools and raise awareness among future professionals? On Pro AV Today, host Ben Thomas and Kim Lonas, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Program Lead & Talent Acquisition Lead at DCC Technology, discuss how the industry can evolve its recruitment strategies. Together, they explore the urgency behind workforce development and how inclusivity, education, and mentorship impact everything from awareness to long-term retention.Key Takeaways from the Episode:Rethinking recruitment pipelines: Organizations must look beyond traditional AV circles, reaching into adjacent industries, educational institutions, and nontraditional talent pools to find the next wave of professionals.IT convergence as a gateway: As AV solutions rely more on networking and data, individuals with IT skills—especially in analytics and platforms like Power BI—are increasingly essential to integrator success.Mentorship as a growth tool: Programs like those from AVIXA and WAVE are helping to mentor, educate, and retain new talent, making the industry more accessible to those unfamiliar with its career opportunities.Kimberly Lonas is a seasoned leader in equity, inclusion, and talent acquisition with over 20 years of experience in executive search, HR strategy, and workforce development across North America and global markets. Hello Libration Nation! This week's book is Daring Greatly by Dr. Brené Brown, and I'm talking about it with my fellow librarian and library advocacy rockstar - Sonya Durney! Sonya is a passionate advocate for libraries and open education. Sonya is the Scholarly Communication Research & Teaching Librarian at the University of New England, is past president of the Maine Library Association, a member of the American Library Association Policy Corps, and serves on the executive board of the Maine Freedom of Information Coalition. As the Scholarly Communication Research & Teaching Librarian at the University of New England, Sonya liaises with the College of Business and the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences while actively contributing to various university committees, including the Open Educational Resources Steering Committee, Equity and Diversity Council of Chairs, and the University Faculty Assembly. Sonya holds an MLIS from Simmons College, a BA in Political Science from Framingham State University, and a doctorate in Public Policy focusing on Educational Leadership from the Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine. When she's not immersed in her work or reading, Sonya loves to spend time outdoors in Maine, enjoying adventures with her husband, son, and their beloved chocolate lab, Bourbon. The challenges librarians face today echo Brown's idea of “being in the arena.” Whether it's addressing book bans or advocating for community resources, stepping up despite the fear of criticism embodies the very essence of daring greatly, and Sonya shares her experiences and inspiration pulled from Brené Brown's work. Diversity and inclusion are laudable goals, but how can change be created in an industry driven by tradition and financial return? This interview explores the concept of using economic incentives and data to encourage diversity within the legal profession. The conversation also explores controversial topics such as diversity spin, partner compensation, and the impact on the legal profession of changes to affirmative action law currently being considered at the Supreme Court.  Aviva Will is the Co-Chief Operating Officer at Burford Capital and one of the architects behind Burford's Equity Project (a $150,000,000 fund allocated exclusively for women and minority litigators). But what is their role and how important are they to the performance staff. In this podcast, we speak with Joey Blake, Director of Sports Nutrition and Sports Dietitian for Los Angeles Rams. We dive into his career path to the NFL, what he loves about his job and the challenges that come along side of it, his day to day during the off-season and in-season and what it was like to win the granddaddy of them all, the Super Bowl. I also was able to ask him about what he thought about that No Call against my Saints in the 2019 Championship Game but you'll have to wait until the end to see what he says.                       After 5 years in the trenches, Joey had a chance to celebrate a Super Bowl victory. Is it about profit as much as people – why or why not? It can start with hiring and having a D&I policy but how does everyday culture in an organization need to operate to succeed with having a more inclusive workplace that thrives financially as well as socially? The Diversity Council of Australia has a yearly index they share. We began tracking the state of inclusion in the Australian workforce in 2017. The stats don't lie! Diversity Council of Australia CEO Lisa Annese is a self-described feminist and activist, working to improve gender equality in Australian workplaces. She is passionate about the connection between the gendered roles we still expect at home with a lack of progress for women in workplaces.  Lisa shared research from the DCA that shows men's mental health and wellbeing benefits from being in gender equal relationships, families and workplaces. The conversation around men's mental health and women wanting flexibility and support in the workplace are two sides of the same coin, and Lisa's deep knowledge around gender issues led us on a fascinating discussion.
