HEADLINES// 7:15 AM// Kate Colvin is the CEO of Homelessness Australia. Previously, Kate was the spokesperson for national housing and homelessness campaign Everybody's Home and served as the deputy CEO for Victoria's peak body for homelessness, the Council to Homeless Persons. Last week, the Australian Government's National Housing Supply and Affordability council released its State of the Housing system 2025 report. Kate joined us to discuss key findings of the report, including new drivers of homelessness in Australia, the direct impact of the housing crisis on wellbeing, and what is required to bring an end to this crisis. 7:30 AM// Aawa is from Kinglake Friends of the Forest (KFF), a volunteer community group committed to protecting native forests and relishing the joy of their unique biodiversity. The group started in opposition to local logging operations in Kinglake in 2018. Before long they were running court cases against logging agency VicForests that ended up halting native forest logging across the entire state from November 2022, over a year before the official end of the industry in 2024. Since the end of VicForests, KFF have turned their attention to the industrial burning of forests the occurs under the guise of bushfire management. 7:45 AM// Camille Comtat is the manager of Biodiversity and Habitats at Minderoo Foundation, a philanthropic organisation focused on climate change, gender equality, and First Nations issues. In her speech, she discussed the work of activists and organisers to heed the BDS call to boycott, divest from, and sanction Elbit Systems, Israel's largest arms company that designs and manufactures weapons and technology, as well as the government's complicity in enabling genocide. Kannagi is currently based in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and spoke to Phuong about the impacts of the earthquake in Thailand, the communities particularly impacted in Myanmar, and the efforts of organisations and mutual aid campaigns to support those affected. Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG) hosted a roundtable on Wednesday 11th September at Victorian Parliament in which Ministers, housing experts, and people with lived experience of the housing crisis came together. This was facilitated by Fiona York, CEO of HAAG. In this segment, we hear accounts from lived-experience housing advocates and working group members with Housing for The Aged Action Group (HAAG). You can catch HAAG on 3CR every Wednesday from 5:30pm to 6:00pm with their show Raise the Roof. Monica is a leading organiser in ASU Action for Palestine and Unionists for Palestine. Monica is on the show to talk about last week's ASU4P survey results that exposed social, community and not for profit organisations that are repressing its workers for being pro-Palestine. The survey had 60 total responses: 36 censored or silenced discussions about Palestine in the workplace; 31 claimed Palestine was creating an 'unsafe workplace'; 30 prevented or attempted to prevent the display of pro-Palestine posters or other materials. Dr Blair WIlliams is a Lecturer in Australian Politics at Monash University, NTEU delegate for the School of Social Sciences and union branch committee member. In this segment, Blair speaks to Frances about new legislation concerning casual employees. On 26 August 2024, a new definition of ‘casual employee' was introduced to the Fair Work Act. This legislation aims to Close the Loophole that previously allowed employers, especially universities, to employ staff on casual contracts who were actually engaged in ongoing work. Monash University is reportedly responding by reducing sessional staff hires, reducing contact hours and increasing student-staff ratios, instead of creating better working and learning conditions. Emily Kaji is a Unimelb for Palestine organiser, a social work student and staff member at the university. She was also one of the students who received misconduct from the University due to her involvement in Mahmoud's Hall. Emily speaks about the rally tomorrow to protest the International Careers Conference and the university's role in manufacturing consent for war. The rally will take place tomorrow, Wednesday 25th September at 10am in Mahmoud's Hall. Sarah is a member of Free Kanaky Solidarity Naarm Collective. Since May 2024, Kanaky - which is often known by its colonial name New Caledonia - has been in the process of a colonial war with France. This is the latest development within a deep history of colonial intervention and First Nations uprising in Kanaky. Sarah speaks about the latest developments in the fight for Kanak sovereignty, Invasion Day in Kanaky (24th September) and the upcoming solidarity rally. These protests have been organised by Refugee Women Action for Visa Equality and they are demanding permanent visas for refugees currently on temporary visas. We revisited a conversation Kannagi had with Rati and Lavanya, two members of Refugee WAVE in September 2023, when they marched from Melbourne to Canberra to fight for visa equality and raise awareness about those who have been impacted by the Australian government's refusal to grant permanent protection visas. We hear from Amanda Villalobos who is an activist from the south east of Naarm and comes from a long line of activists from Latin America and has been a lifelong supporter of the Palestinian struggle. She has been involved in organising rallies in support of Palestine in the south east of Naarm since October last year and has been the Picket Captain at the North Gate of AW Bell. In a speech given at the Free Palestine Naarm Rally on 30 June 2024, Amanda spoke about the importance of picketing weapons manufacturing factories and to join the global struggle against the oppression of Indigenous people all around the world, including Palestinians, West Papuans and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in "Australia". Stella joins us to speak about the campaign to Shut Down Electromold. Electromold Thomastown is the only currently known Chemical processing facility in Australia allowed to work with Lockheed Martin and Boeing in producing finished components, including for the F-35 Lightning 2 Joint Strike Fighter.
