"Echoes of Change: Central Illinois Journalism and Social Justice in the 1980s" was a forum hosted by the Sangamon Experience at the University of Illinois Springfield and co-sponsored by NPR Illinois. The conversation explored the impact of local journalism during a transformative era. Mary Bohlen, journalist and UIS associate professor emerita of communication, moderated the conversation. Panelists included Fletcher Farrar, editor of the Illinois Times; Ann Anderson Mustard, former WCIA-TV reporter who covered the Illinois State Capitol; Larry Golden, professor emeritus of political studies and legal studies and founding director of the Illinois Innocence Project at UIS; and Frank McNeil, former Springfield alderman and plaintiff in the 1987 lawsuit that changed the city's commission form of government.
We talk local government on the show today with Ryan Whitehouse, who serves as Associate Director of Local Government and political Engagement for Illinois Farm Bureau. We get an Ag in the Classroom update from Sarah Kaper in Champaign County. She is involved with a "Wake up with Ag" segment on WCIA TV. From our latest show, T.J. and Jon have a great conversation with Bret Beherns, Sports Director of WCIA-TV CBS 3, in Champaign, IL. Bret has been the sports director of that station since 2015 and discusses the philosophy and challenges of doing smaller market local sports in the 2020s. However, just as big is Bret's personal story of triumph over a near death work accident as a college student in 2006. Bret was hospitalized in the ICU for 13 days and treated for two total months with doctors and staff saving his life from his injuries. Bret's challenges would continue as his left leg had to be amputated below the knee. Starting in 2006 Aaron Bennett could be found on WCIA-TV as a sports reporter, sports anchor, and eventually a news anchor. My guest on today's thoroughly enjoyable episode is Maureen Umeh. Maureen Umeh is an anchor and reporter for FOX 5 Morning. Maureen's career on TV started a number of years ago, landing a full-time reporting job at WCIA-TV right after she graduated from college. She has been honored with several awards for her work. They include an Emmy for Best Investigative Series and Best Newscast. She has also been honored by many other organizations, including the South Carolina Television and Arts Association; the Illinois Broadcaster's Association and the NAACP. Maureen has served as the Chairwoman for the Upstate Leadership Council of the American Cancer Society and also worked with nonprofit organizations including Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and Mathew House, an agency for disadvantaged youth. She also serves on the board of the African Women's Cancer Awareness Association and mentions their upcoming gala in the Washington D.C. metro area on Saturday, October 26th. In spite of these major accomplishments, she says that her daughter is undoubtedly her biggest accomplishment. I found Maureen to be humble, down to earth and so warm. In today's episode, we discuss her journey and advice she would give to anyone wishing to follow a similar path. Maureen discusses the fact that no knowledge is lost knowledge.
