breathing exercises This past month I listened to a Ted Talk by Max Strom called Breathe to Heal. This Ted Talk had quite an impact on me and in a moment, I will tell you why. Max Strom is just as gentle and as kind as he is in his Ted Talk. I know, because I had an opportunity to meet him back in 2010 when I had a radio show called Returning to the Body Mind. My name is Melissa. I teach breathing and yoga, mostly restorative styles of yoga like yin yoga, sleep yoga and restorative yoga on my main channel. I am super lucky that the foundations of my yoga study included a lot of teaching on breathing. I will put a card to it up here to Max Strom's Ted talk so you can watch it too. The reason why I am bringing up this talk so often, is because it changed the way I thought about anxiety. What Max said, is that when we repress emotions, and he was specifically talking about grief, it shows up as anxiety. This was a major aha moment for me. That anxiety, is a way that we hold our emotional life at bay. Breath is a gentle way that we can open to feeling. In August I am going to do a short video on what exercises are good for anxiety. I will also be doing a second on how we can change our breathing to support our digestion whether we are experiencing IBS, GERD, crohs, colitis, constipation, bloating, heartburn, and celiac disease, there are ways we can gently change our breath to support our digestion. One of the most popular videos on this channel is my video: How to grow taller with yoga. Because that video is so popular, I thought I would treat you all to a second video on the best yoga poses to grow taller. In that video I will pay special attention to your questions such as how often should I do these poses, for how long should I do these poses and how long will it take to see results. I am going to offer some of my best tips and tricks that I have used in the past in my yoga classrooms. I myself have always been amazed by the results. I used to see anywhere from half an inch to one and a half inch gains from my students with the exercises that I practiced with them. You are going to love this video. Finally I will share with you a video on how to improve your digestion with yoga. Again, I hope to explore a range of digestive issues from IBS, GERD, crohs, colitis, constipation, bloating, heartburn, and celiac disease. This month in August we will be taking a couple of weeks off to go camping. We have scheduled two weeks off in the middle of August. We are going to going back to Strathcona and heading over French Beach, Mystic Beach, Botanical Beach way. I will link to some of our past vlogs so you can see what beautiful places these are to visit! This month on the Yoga with Melissa Lifestyle channel we will be focusing on breathing exercises, the best yoga poses to grow taller, breathwork for digestion and how to improve your digestion with yoga. Let's break all of that down a little bit more. On my main channel, Yoga with Melissa, I have been offering short 10 minute breathing exercises, belly breathing, or diaphragm breathing to help relieve anxiety. This month, I will answer the question, What breathing exercises are good for anxiety. I will also do a video talking about breathing for digestion. I hope to cover the full range of digestion from inflammatory digestion from crohns, colitis, IBS, to sluggish digestion like constipation. This will be in preparation for an in depth series that will be coming out in September 2019 in our membership community that focuses on digestion. Because of the popularity of the video, How to Grow Taller with Yoga https://youtu.be/NapJQwTlvI8 I will be releasing a video this month that will share the best yoga poses to grow taller. Finally we will close out the month with how to improve digestion with yoga. In this week’s special episode, Coach Sam and Coach Maximilian Mormont have a riveting conversation about Max’s myriad adventures & world travels, poignant turning points, mastery & family, and… Coach Sam makes an important announcement and commitment to Max. Parable #1: Blood Money In 1996, an accident that claimed the lives of two of his college friends became a turning point for Max where he began playing the ‘fuck you’ game. “God, you saved me…but, why?” He began putting himself in harm’s way after receiving settlement money from the accident and poured this ‘blood money’ into drugs. For a time, he traveled the U.S. dealing drugs and spending time with high-level athletes until deciding to return home to his mother. QUESTION How does this resonate with experiences in your life? Parable #2: Turning It Around Max’s choices after returning home led him from the possibility of facing involuntary manslaughter charges to probation and ultimately to be in the position of wanting to turn his life around. He became a bartender, went back to school, got into bodybuilding, personal training, coaching, managing major gyms, helped develop CrossFit football, and found his way into Olympic weight lifting. QUESTION What has been a turning point in your life? Parable #3: Mastery Sam: “It’s four years of your fucking life dedicated to two fucking movements day and night: clean and snatch. That’s mastery!” Max: “It’s 10,000 hours. And if you really look into the mastery of 10,000 hours of something, the reality is, you actually have to put time into something. QUESTION Where in your world are you devoting time to becoming a master at something? Parable #4: Train For Something Sam had an experience with Max’s wife, also a coach, where she instilled in him the necessity to train for something vs going to the gym or working out without having a target in mind. Max: Training for something doesn’t necessarily have to be training for fitness or health, it could just be discovering and understanding how your body works and taking ownership of it. QUESTION What are you currently training for? Parable #5: Cyclops As Max entered Warrior, he began wondering, “What the fuck am I doing here? Everything’s pretty good in my life; what do I need to fix?” What Max discovered was a spiritual path, unlike anything he had experienced up to this point in his life. After the men had been directed to draw Light & Dark Warrior in their journals, Max drew a picture of Cyclops to represent his Dark Warrior. At first, he wanted to erase it until he realized that his drawing was the perfect representation of himself with the one eye mirroring his laser focus once he hooks onto something. QUESTION What does your Dark Warrior look like? Parables from the Pit: “When I first met Max several years ago, I was a sedated mother fucker who traveled the world with my Blackberry and suitcase and had a feeling of significance.” —Sam Falsafi “People want to get strong until the weight gets heavy.” — Coach Maximilian Mormont
Today’s episode features Max Aita, head coach of Team Juggernaut weightlifting. Max has been involved in the sports of Weightlifting and Powerlifting as a coach and athlete for the better part of 2 decades. Having trained under legendary coaches Ivan Abadjiev and Steve Gough for weightlifting and alongside the likes of Mark Bell for powerlifting, Max’s experience and knowledge is extensive. Max is a masterful coach who has studied Soviet training systems extensively, and has coached National Record holders in Weightlifting (such as Alyssa Ritchey who recently set the US record in the 49kg category in Olympic weightlifting) as well as All Time world record holders in Powerlifting. One of the things that I’ve always enjoyed is chatting training with coaches of various disciplines, in general physical preparation, track and field, baseball, swimming, and in this case, Olympic weightlifting. A quote I like is “not being able to read the label while you are inside the bottle”, and by that I feel that by not talking with coaches processes outside our own particular field, we lose insights our own field may not have considered due to contextual restrictions and habituation. By talking to expert coaches of all individual sport disciplines, we can better understand the global training process and Max is an incredible coach we can all learn from, regardless of our corner of the field. Although many coaches would look at a chat regarding Olympic lifting in terms of potential transfer to non-strength sport athletics (we do talk about this on the first 1/3 of the show), this episode is really about Max’s training process for Olympic weightlifters, his periodization, and how he approaches special and maximal strength. For those familiar with this podcast, and/or, Soviet training methods, the Bondarchuk influence on Max’s system is significant, and concepts from Max’s training organization can be carried over to any sport process. On today’s episode, Max talks about Olympic lifting in context of training non-strength sport athletes, the use of the Olympic lifts (and any other non-primary sport movement) as a tool, what Max has learned from the Bulgarians and beyond, as well as the nuts and bolts of his own training design and sequencing. This podcast was recorded in person at Max’s Gym in Emeryville, California. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points Max’s description of the Bulgarian system The hardest training time period Max has gone through How Max would approach utilizing (or not utilizing) the Olympic lifts in a non-strength sport environment Exercise sequencing and selection for Olympic lifting and subsequent principles for training any athletes What Max has learned from training with the Bulgarians and what his training looks like currently What Max’s periodization for his Olympic lifting program looks like Max’s deconstruction and reconstruction of the Bulgarian system into his own training process The importance of rest and recovery in Max’s system Max’s thoughts on the squat-weight bias in the Western training world relative to other sport skills View episode #149 transcripts “Coaches biggest problems is that they construct a framework around their thinking, and then try to fit situations into their framework” “You (some elite athletes particularly) can get away with an enormous amount of unproductive work” “(In the aftermath of Bulgarian style weight training) Now my perspective is how can I do less, how can I maximize training to be the most effective it can possibly be” “Some people are trying to fix things all the time, but they are not even in the right (athletic) position” “If you just try to pull the bar as high as you can or go as heavy as possible,

We have a viral internet legend on the show today, and who knows, maybe he can help you become one too! Max Lanman shot to fame when a humourous advert he created to help sell his girlfriend’s second-hand car went viral (the original Youtube clip is at 6.7m viewers and counting!). Max also has a business that creates video content for clients around the world, so he’s a very good man to speak to about how to maximise the impact of your video campaigns. See some of Max’s top tips below: ** Find an emotional background for everything that you do. Understand what you want your audience to feel. ** Be careful to not place too much of an emphasis of AB testing. If you’re too systematic, your output will lack humanity. ** Think of your video output as a multi-pronged attack. These days, the best campaigns are normally spread over multiple short videos rather than one long one. ** If you genuinely connect with the video you’re shooting, there’s a good chance the audience will too. ** Don’t get too hung up on expensive equipment. How you use it is so much more important. In this episode of Business Brain Food you will learn: ** Max’s incredible story ** What Max has learnt about video from his journey ** The value of TV commercials in 2018 ** “The emotional north star" ** Entertaining V educating in adverts ** Explainer videos ** Setting the right budget Resources mentioned in this episode: ** Learn more about our Business Excelerator program: http://www.maxmyprofit.com.au ** Watch Max’s legendary viral advert here ** Max’s personal website: http://www.maxlanman.com ** Max’s creative agency: http://www.leao.tv ** The Business Brain Food Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/businessbrainfood ** All previous BBF episodes & show notes can be found at http://www.businessbrainfood.com.au ** Twitter: https://twitter.com/bfewtrell Call to action: You can never guarantee that a video will “go viral”, but if you follow Max’s lead and concentrate on every last detail, you will give yourself every chance. Also, if you are enjoying these Business Brain Food podcasts, then make sure to share them via social media sites or email the links to family and friends. A lot of time and effort goes into producing each of these podcasts with the goal in mind of the more people we can inspire about business the better. You can help us do just that! “Find the thing that gets you excited, because that’s the thing that’s going to drive you through the hard times and the good times.” - Max Friedman In this episode of Nat Chat we have Max Friedman. Max and I first got in touch three years ago when he was still in college, working on an app for finding local events called “Happening.” The app didn’t work out, but he’s worked on a number of startup related projects since then including his latest, GiveButter, which is a fundraising platform specifically targeted at engaging young people, a demographic normally inclined to donate. I wanted to have Max on for a few reasons: First, he was completely self taught at programming, which allowed him to build that first app as well as his subsequent projects, and we dive into how he taught himself that during the episode. Second, Max was relentless about experimenting and trying new projects as a student, which eventually led to GiveButter which he’s able to work full time on now as a graduate. Third, while many of the guests on this show figured out they wanted to do their own work post graduation, Max decided it early on, and did everything he could to make it happen before graduation which he succeeded at. We covered a lot in this episode: How Max started working on these entrepreneurial projects How his and his roommates viral marketing stunt took off and turned into GiveButter How he dealt with failure and shutting down his first startup How to think about “financial freedom” How he negotiated with his professors to work on his own projects in class How he got into more of a “skills mindset” instead of a “gpa mindset” Please enjoy, and if you’re a student interested in working with Max, definitely check out the summer opportunities available at GiveButter! Anthony is not a tech guy - meaning he’s not the guy to figure out the ways software and technological tools can be used to make sales work better, even though he is an avid user of the tech that exists. With that said, he’s very glad there are people out there who are into the tech and know how to take the deep dive into it in order to make it work better for sales professional. Max Altschuler is that guy. He’s on the show today to talk about sales stacks, the powerful benefits technology can bring to the prospecting and sales process, and how human capital can and should be integrated into the process. Data is the foundation of any successful sales process ~ Max AltschulerClick To Tweet What is meant by a “sales stack” and is yours high enough quality to help you? When Max Altschuler uses the term “sales stack” he’s referring to the human, software, and tech components that you have in place to organize and utilize the data involved in prospecting, marketing, and sales. That definition infers that you’ve got to have a system in place that has quality data that is both current and useful. On this episode Max walks through the things that make up a great data stack, how he uses it when making sales calls, and what you can do to close the loops in your process to ensure that your data stays up to date. Do you know how to research a prospect before making a connection? Every sales professional knows that you can’t (or shouldn’t) just pick up the phone and call someone you want to make a sale to. You’re much better off in the long run if you do some research to know something about that person, what they do, and why your product or service is the right solution for their needs.
