Automated systems free your team up to focus on the best uses of their time, but these systems could not be developed if one did not take the time to reflect on how to improve. Today we invite Max Friar onto the show to speak about the reflections he made about his industry, how they allowed him to automate the mundane sides of his business, and the huge benefits this has offered. Max is the Managing Partner at Calder Capital, a full-service M&A firm focused on lower middle-market companies within the Midwest. Calder was successful in closing 40 transactions in 2020, and it was the most successful year the firm ever had, despite all of the challenges the pandemic presented. Max takes us through the various positions he occupied in the M&A industry and how he figured out how to solve different pain points using automation before starting Calder. He then gets into the weeds of exactly which parts of the business brokerage process he has automated using software and other systems. We talk about how these jobs, when done manually, are incredibly draining for business brokers, leading to burnout and poor service. The plus for Max is that since implementing his automation systems, his team does not struggle with these issues anymore, and this, in turn, has allowed him to scale and broaden the range of high-quality services he can now offer. We talk about what these are before wrapping our conversation up on the topic of reflection once more. Without these valuable moments of contemplation, Max would never have been able to scale his business and refine his services in the way he had. Tune in for all this and more today!  Key Points From This Episode: Max's experience in M&A and how automation helped him scale Calder.Automation processes Max put in place using software to vet potential buyers.Three ways business brokers get burned out and how automation can help. How Max's attitude about the value of rest for productive work has changed. The way automation can free up staff for more key roles and treating clients better.Attachment sellers have to their businesses and how important the right buyer is.The need to market a business widely for finding the right buyer. How much emotional bandwidth is needed to take a buyer through the selling process. The role of reflection in helping Max come up with his automation systems.Evolution in the business; prospecting for new sellers, data analytics, and more.Max's ideas around whether a concrete business plan is necessary for success.Max Friar on LinkedInMax Friar EmailCalder CapitalInfusionsoftAlex Drost LinkedInBranch Out Podcast LinkedInConnection Builders LinkedInHave thoughts or comments? Max Wenerstrom is a blacksmith and craftsman best known for creating hand-forged knives that balance a beautiful aesthetic with practical durability. Max started blacksmithing at the age of 15, became obsessed with the craft, and quickly demonstrated an elite talent for creating one-of-a-kind knives. His passion led him to study under a 17th-generation Japanese bladesmith, who began teaching Max the art of forging knives in the Japanese tradition-- a labor-intensive, time-honored method of creating some of the world’s sharpest and most durable knives. - I was introduced to Max by my friends at Ranchlands, one of the West’s most respected ranch management companies. Max was participating in a residency at Ranchlands’ 87,000-acre Chico Basin Ranch, where he was offering blacksmithing demonstrations and forging a specific model of knife developed in partnership with Ranchlands. It’s a knife created specifically for ranchers-- designed to be used on horseback for everyday work and high-stakes situations. So when the folks at Ranchlands told me about Max, I drove out, and we sat down for an inspiring conversation. - Max is only 21 years old, and as you’ll hear in the interview, I was blown away by his maturity, work ethic, and commitment to quality. But aside from my endless amazement with his age, we covered a ton of interesting topics. We chatted about his beginnings in the craft, and what led him to study with world-famous Japanese bladesmith Murray Carter. We discussed his dedication to creating the highest quality products, how he pushes himself to constantly improve his craft, and the hard work involved in both. We discuss how he started building his business during high school and how it has grown and evolved in recent years. We talked about his partnership with Ranchlands, the process of making a knife, his deep love of the West, and advice for anyone seeking to begin a deliberate practice of craftsmanship. - I really loved this conversation and appreciated Max taking the time to chat. #036 - Max Welling: Quantum, Manifolds & Symmetries in ML

Today we had a fantastic conversation with Professor Max Welling, VP of Technology, Qualcomm Technologies Netherlands B.V. Max is a strong believer in the power of data and computation and its relevance to artificial intelligence. There is a fundamental blank slate paradgm in machine learning, experience and data alone currently rule the roost. Max wants to build a house of domain knowledge on top of that blank slate. Max thinks there are no predictions without assumptions, no generalization without inductive bias. The bias-variance tradeoff tells us that we need to use additional human knowledge when data is insufficient. Max Welling has pioneered many of the most sophistocated inductive priors in DL models developed in recent years, allowing us to use Deep Learning with non-euclidean data i.e. on graphs/topology (a field we now called "geometric deep learning") or allowing network architectures to recognise new symmetries in the data for example gauge or SE(3) equivariance. Max has also brought many other concepts from his physics playbook into ML, for example quantum and even Bayesian approaches. This is not an episode to miss, it might be our best yet! So when you have a data project, make sure that you are actually working on a solid foundation. Don't just build everything as fast as just writing some script and then throw it out and be done with it because you have to maintain that goal. So you copy and paste a duplicate bunch of code everywhere. And that's a wrong thing, obviously." [55:18] "And that's one way of seeing it, because when you actually really look at it, a failure is simply something you don't know for now. And then once you do go through it and figure out what you don't know, you have learned something is a lesson in disguise." [58:00] "It's really important that we understand two or three aspect of memory and how it works. And one is that memory works based on association, so it's always associated with something that you already know. And if you try to remember something without associating something you to know, it'll be very hard" [01:06:29] "So loving yourself completely is to remove any shackles from you. Believe in yourself what you can actually use to push yourself forward. One thing that I’ve really enjoyed in observing Max’s work over the years is his passion for movement and learning.  Max is a coach who is the epitome of getting outside the box, and taking a holistic approach to coaching, training and human development.  His methods of working towards becoming an “athletic ninja” have relevance towards the goals of any trainee. On today’s show, Max gets into skill training from a practical and philosophical perspective, music’s relationship with training, using play dance in training, developing elasticity, training the foot, and much more.  This is a fantastic show that blends a lot of different elements of life itself, to get a deeper view on our training practice.  Whether you deal with only athletes, or work heavily in general fitness, there is a ton of gold in this episode. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Timestamps and Main Points 3:50 How music fits in with physical music in Max’s philosophy 10:50 Why doing work that is more engaging emotionally is a more sustainable practice in exercise 21:20 Why a diversity and love of movement is often lacking in a strength and conditioning environment 25:50 What an exercise program means to Max and why we should pick means of training that come from intrinsic motivation rather than looking a particular way 40:45 How Max views the relationship between play and training 50:25 The mind-body relationship when it comes to difficult work and the sustainability of difficult training protocols 58:00 Some of Max’s favorite tools for strength and movement 1:02.45  How Max views elasticity and elastic strength development Quotes  “The use of a metronome is outrageous.  Playing too slow, playing too fast.  Doing it deliberately wrong, and seeing if you can work your way back into it.  Being able to express emotional content into what you are doing, whether it’s tennis or boxing, or wrestling or something, and doing the same thing with an instrument, there are so many parallels” “There’s the part from Bruce Lee in “Enter the Dragon” where he tells the kid to put emotional content (into his physical practice)” “Music is relationships and ratios put together in time” “Dancers are savage athletes who have a huge variety of skills and ranges of motion, and fantastic body control” “You have two hearts, and one of them is your feet.  You don’t get amazing venous return from your lower extremities without movement” “That’s the point of training is for it to be intrinsically enjoyable, so the experience right now, itself should be fun, and it should be something that you would want to do if you didn’t get any results from it… if you didn’t build one muscle fiber from it, would you still do the thing.  That’s a pretty good indicator that it’s a rich experience” “If you are just doing the pushups so your arms will get bigger, then you are sort of trapped.  Pick something that you would be happy to do even if it didn’t build muscle or lose fat” “I probably do at least a few minutes of drumming before I get my training done… it’s just fun, it feels good.  All of my training is that way.” “(Regarding training and play) Ideally you would want to structure your training playfully, so you look forward to it.  So you look forward to the stimulus you are try...

How Max and Eli took traditional mezcal distilling methods and adapted them for making smoked fruit brandies that pay homage to the ancient mezcal tradition and the terroir of the Mid-Atlantic. Today’s episode features Max Aita, head coach of Team Juggernaut weightlifting. Max has been involved in the sports of Weightlifting and Powerlifting as a coach and athlete for the better part of 2 decades.  Having trained under legendary coaches Ivan Abadjiev and Steve Gough for weightlifting and alongside the likes of Mark Bell for powerlifting, Max’s experience and knowledge is extensive. Max is a masterful coach who has studied Soviet training systems extensively, and has coached National Record holders in Weightlifting (such as Alyssa Ritchey who recently set the US record in the 49kg category in Olympic weightlifting) as well as All Time world record holders in Powerlifting. One of the things that I’ve always enjoyed is chatting training with coaches of various disciplines, in general physical preparation, track and field, baseball, swimming, and in this case, Olympic weightlifting.   A quote I like is “not being able to read the label while you are inside the bottle”, and by that I feel that by not talking with coaches processes outside our own particular field, we lose insights our own field may not have considered due to contextual restrictions and habituation.  By talking to expert coaches of all individual sport disciplines, we can better understand the global training process and Max is an incredible coach we can all learn from, regardless of our corner of the field. Although many coaches would look at a chat regarding Olympic lifting in terms of potential transfer to non-strength sport athletics (we do talk about this on the first 1/3 of the show), this episode is really about Max’s training process for Olympic weightlifters, his periodization, and how he approaches special and maximal strength.  For those familiar with this podcast, and/or, Soviet training methods, the Bondarchuk influence on Max’s system is significant, and concepts from Max’s training organization can be carried over to any sport process. On today’s episode, Max talks about Olympic lifting in context of training non-strength sport athletes, the use of the Olympic lifts (and any other non-primary sport movement) as a tool, what Max has learned from the Bulgarians and beyond, as well as the nuts and bolts of his own training design and sequencing. This podcast was recorded in person at Max’s Gym in Emeryville, California. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points Max’s description of the Bulgarian system The hardest training time period Max has gone through How Max would approach utilizing (or not utilizing) the Olympic lifts in a non-strength sport environment Exercise sequencing and selection for Olympic lifting and subsequent principles for training any athletes What Max has learned from training with the Bulgarians and what his training looks like currently What Max’s periodization for his Olympic lifting program looks like Max’s deconstruction and reconstruction of the Bulgarian system into his own training process The importance of rest and recovery in Max’s system Max’s thoughts on the squat-weight bias in the Western training world relative to other sport skills View episode #149 transcripts “Coaches biggest problems is that they construct a framework around their thinking, and then try to fit situations into their framework” “You (some elite athletes particularly) can get away with an enormous amount of unproductive work” “(In the aftermath of Bulgarian style weight training) Now my perspective is how can I do less, how can I maximize training to be the most effective it can possibly be” “Some people are trying to fix things all the time, but they are not even in the right (athletic) position” “If you just try to pull the bar as high as you can or go as heavy as possible,

Although Max lived a normal life as a kid growing up with the help of his carbon-fiber and steel made braces, there was one pressing problem he was dealing with, shame. It's a topic that fits Max all too well as he would easily qualify as a global citizen of the world. Having lived pretty much everywhere around the globe, his current home is Hong Kong. Talkpush is his fourth company, which he started in 2014. While the HQ of the company is technically Hong Kong where Max sits with two other people, the reality is that the conversational Candidate Relationship Management system has been global from day 1 and has 5 homes. That wasn't the advice Max had received at the beginning. Instead of focusing on one market alone and growing slowly, Max decided to approach growth differently - working with enterprise customers he would follow existing customers around the world and expand in each market where they were present rather than seek to find new customers in one place. The plan has worked out well and Talkpush currently employs 45 people and after an initial seed round is a 100% customer-funded. Listen on to hear: How Max de-risked expanding into new markets How to approach each market individually from a technological perspective One way to make sure your positioning is right in each market Max is one of the excellent speakers we will host at SaaStock Asia, which will take place in Hong Kong, May 14th - 16th. “Find the thing that gets you excited, because that’s the thing that’s going to drive you through the hard times and the good times.” - Max Friedman In this episode of Nat Chat we have Max Friedman. Max and I first got in touch three years ago when he was still in college, working on an app for finding local events called “Happening.” The app didn’t work out, but he’s worked on a number of startup related projects since then including his latest, GiveButter, which is a fundraising platform specifically targeted at engaging young people, a demographic normally inclined to donate. I wanted to have Max on for a few reasons: First, he was completely self taught at programming, which allowed him to build that first app as well as his subsequent projects, and we dive into how he taught himself that during the episode. Second, Max was relentless about experimenting and trying new projects as a student, which eventually led to GiveButter which he’s able to work full time on now as a graduate. Third, while many of the guests on this show figured out they wanted to do their own work post graduation, Max decided it early on, and did everything he could to make it happen before graduation which he succeeded at. We covered a lot in this episode:  How Max started working on these entrepreneurial projects How his and his roommates viral marketing stunt took off and turned into GiveButter How he dealt with failure and shutting down his first startup How to think about “financial freedom” How he negotiated with his professors to work on his own projects in class How he got into more of a “skills mindset” instead of a “gpa mindset” Please enjoy, and if you’re a student interested in working with Max, definitely check out the summer opportunities available at GiveButter! Max Shank's simple yet effective training and life philosophy caught my eye a while back, but it wasn’t until I started applying it that I really noticed its power – especially when it comes to movement, strength and performance. Instead of starting my day with my usual morning routine, I started plugging in his “5 Minutes of Flow” and found myself feeling better because of it. I also hit a number of lifting PR’s 3 weeks later. The core of Max's philosophy is creating a foundation where you can safely build strength, power and endurance without breaking down your body. In other words, the name of the game improvement, durability and longevity. Many of us pursue improving our body and performance at the expense of our health. But what if you can build muscle, lose fat, and increase performance without having to sacrifice your life, sanity or body? In this episode Max explains his philosophy to training through the lens of economics, and simplifies how you can get great results doing the right things for you – strategies that will not only make you fit, but also make you happier and healthier. IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN: How Max’s frustration with the fitness industry inspired him to start a movement that seems too simple to work, but gets results backed by science and real-world case studies (including one from myself) The one trick that gets you to do things you don’t want to do, but gets you results (every time) **This is so simple you’ll wonder why you haven’t been using it all along How something completely different, like playing the guitar can actually help you with your body, getting your workout in, or even getting a project done that you’ve been stuck with The secret Leonardo Da Vinci figured out that will help you carry over skill-sets from one things to another, and how to apply it in your life What the “amateur's gift” is and how you can excel at something (in a fraction of the time) following these rules How “5-Minutes of Flow” can help create options in your life and help you figure out what you want to do Why both Max and I are fans of Zumba for the majority of people when it comes starting their fitness journey, and how many people in the industry discourage people from starting (even though they are trying to help) The program that will help build a foundation so that you’re able to answer “YES” to questions like, “Hey, do you want to do [insert any sport or activity]?” How Max created programs that get serious results through the lens of economics, and why you should consider learning economics if you want to improve your time management, fitness performance, relationships and career The two things that are missing in schools that could change your future and why it’s important to build these skill-sets The “Marshmallow Experiment” and how it determines your chances of success in the future Why modern fitness marketing is a hoax that creates unreal expectations and a cycle that hurts your health, life and mindset The myth of the “before and after” picture and why it isn’t helping convince people that you (and your gym) can help them achieve their body transformation goals, and the one strategy you can use (right now) to help people believe in you AND themselves Why small daily actions are the “secret” to getting you all the BIG things you want in your life How one small action can amplify the rest of your day (just like throwing a snowball down a hill can create an avalanche)   LINKS AND RESOURCES IN THIS EPISODE: Max Shank - Better Every Day Ultimate Athleticism - Zero To Hero Guide To Strength, Health and Flexibility Book - Education of Millionaires: Everything You Don’t Learn In College in How To Be Successful  (Michael Ellsberg) Book - The Power of Habit - Why We Do What We Do In Life And Business (Charles Duhhig) 5 Minute Flow Thanks so much for joining me this week.

I speak with Max! Rouzier from That Man Max! I wanted to call this episode, “What’s your excuse?” But Max said you shouldn’t listen to this and think he has it harder so you shouldn’t complain. But listen, relate to him, and learn. Max has gone from landing his dream job to working himself to a hospital bed, lucky to be alive. He now works his business on his terms. Something he didn’t think was possible a couple years ago. You’re going to enjoy this episode. Here’s what Max and I discuss: How Max landed his dream job at Google, and then realized it may be a dream for others but not for him. Why he put such an emphasis on getting the job that he didn’t appreciate the process, and what that mean for you. How he started producing viral content and YouTube videos. Why shipping a video once per week was the fastest way for him to develop his skills, and how you can do it too. How he discovered his secret to promoting his videos and how it made all the difference in their growth. How Max, and his partner, were able to write, record, edit, and produce a video each week that was worth watching. How he consistently put out content despite ending up in the hospital several times. The challenges he struggles with due to sickle cell anemia. How he runs at 100% but his body doesn’t always keep up. How he gets more work done today while working fewer hours than in the past. Why he didn’t accept the sickly cell anemia and kept pushing himself beyond his capabilities, and how it almost killed him. How he emails his list daily. Why it’s important to share what’s going on with your emails and how to use it to help your prospects, and yourself. How he is able to work his system. How you can make the change and work your own systems. Enjoy the show: From Dream Job, To A Hospital Bed, To A Business On His Own Terms with Max Rouzier
