Episode 99: Raising a Child With Multiple Complex Medical Conditions With Guest Tammy Flynn In this episode, guest Tammy Flynn discusses raising children with complex medical conditions. Her son Marcus has numerous complex medical conditions, including Ehlers Danlos syndrome, Sherman's kyphosis, EOE (eosinophilia of the esophagus), a bleeding disorder, encephalopathy upon birth, low tone, poor fine motor skills, differently shaped ear canals, slow motility, reflux( as a child), and cancerous moles on his back.   Other than heavy morning sickness that spanned her pregnancy, her pregnancy was relatively normal. Toward the end, she thought her water broke, but it turned out that she was hemorrhaging. The labor and delivery ended up being pretty normal. Marcus was initially jaundiced and had difficulty with feeding from the beginning. Once he started feeding, he started throwing up a lot. He got an infection early on in life and kept getting infections. Marcus bounced from doctor to doctor, with them trying to figure out what was going on. He kept having ear infections, was failure to thrive, was throwing up all of his feeds, and was very developmentally delayed. Doctors didn't know what was going on. At his 9 month visit, Tammy brought up her concerns with the pediatrician, and it was recommended that Marcus start PT and OT. At that time, he was functioning at the level of a one month old. Tammy felt like she was in a whirlwind, as her other 2 children had lots of activities going on, and Tammy was running a business as well. When he was 3, Marcus had a nerve and muscle biopsy done, which revealed brain encephalopathy. This started her down the road of obtaining additional services, including feeding therapy and speech therapy. They started seeing a lot of specialists, but still were not getting answers. 10 years later, a doctor re-looked at the nerve and muscle biopsy that had been done when Marcus was 3, and found that it was done wrong, and wasn't a good enough sample to give them enough answers. Marcus  was involved in therapies on a daily basis. Around age 12, Marcus started to look hunched over. He underwent imaging and results showed Sherman's kyphosis and he was fitted for a back brace. Once he got to 97 degrees hunched over, they started doing genetic testing to see what they should do next. The doctors started looking at possible syndromes to try to figure out what condition Marcus had. When he was 19 years old, Marcus' spine started collapsing. They needed to decide quickly whether they would operate or not. Therefore, they went on a strict diet, did therapies and exercises every day, and tried to get in him the best shape possible for the best possible outcome for surgery. He underwent the 10 hour surgery and remained in the hospital for weeks afterward. He then did in-home therapies for months.   Tammy found that social support and connection with other medical parents key to helping her son. She found that reaching out to the organization related to the diagnosis was really helpful to get recommendations for treatments and doctors. She also found creating an incredible medical team and firing anyone who isn't a good fit very helpful for Marcus. Give yourself a moment to allow yourself to feel your emotions. However, try not to bring those feelings to the medical appointments. When Tammy gets a new overwhelming diagnosis, she schedules a follow up appointment to come back and ask all the questions, so she can give herself time to cope emotionally.   For hospital stays and ER visits, have a GO bag packed, with activities, things to do, things that bring you joy, work to do, a toiletries bag, things to help your child feel more comfortable, and things that will make you feel more comfortable. For children who have multiple conditions, keep a packet with diagnoses, medications, adverse reactions, where they find spot to drop blood off at, lists of specialists and doctors, hospital numbers, and scheduling numbers. Start making your chart early, and add to it. List out how the conditions affect your child, what the treatments are currently, and everything that changes. Update the chart every 6 months to a year. Work on building your case for services, when they are needed. Keep the medications organized. Listen to podcasts, Find low costs tools. Talk to others who have been through the same things. Tammy Abernethy is the CEO of Hope Women’s Center. The center exists to encourage, engage, and equip women and teen girls facing difficult life situations. They offer classes, support groups, and one-on-one mentoring. They serve women in domestic violence, poverty, homelessness, unplanned pregnancy, addiction, or any other difficult life events. All of their services are free to these women. When her children were 5 years old and 18 months old, Tammy went through a difficult divorce, and it shaped her thoughts and feelings around supporting other single mothers. She found her passion was in helping others and using her gifts to lift women in these situations. She says most of her job consists of talking to others, spreading the good work of the center, and seeking donors to help continue the growth. At this time, Hope Women’s Center has five locations in Arizona. When Tammy joined on as the CEO, they had one center, and it has grown significantly since she started 7 years ago. About 90% of the work that gets done at the center is done by volunteers. She felt it was very important that they offer free childcare while mothers come to take classes and receive support. Her goal is to break down as many barriers for women being able to visit Hope Women’s Center. How COVID has affected their center: “We started crisis counseling during COVID, because we saw that was a need. We were seeing a lot of women coming in, struggling with mental health needs - very isolated - and they didn’t have the funding or resources to be able to get private counseling. We were able to have some donors come along to support that, and we were able to hire a licensed counselor that now provides the crisis counseling.”The importance of design in each location:“Safety is a big component for us, because when women are coming out of trauma and abuse, we want them to feel safe. We designed the space to be beautiful, warm, and inviting. Even our commercial spaces are still designed to be very warm and inviting.”Why they share the stories of women from the center:“The transformation in a life is what tells the story of what we do...The womens’ stories will inspire you to hear what they have overcome. It’s incredible. They give me so much courage and strength, just listening to their stories - what they’ve overcome, how they are coming back from healing from trauma, and how they are really trying to make a difference for their children.”Additional Links:Learn more about Hope Women’s Center here: https://hopewomenscenter.org/

Droopy Drawers Jr. is truly a beloved character." Tonya Bilyeu adds, "It also feels right to be together on stage. All three of us performed in the Baldknobbers' Jamboree Show and have fond memories of that shared experience as well as admiration for the music and comedy passed down thru the generations." Tim Mabe says, "After deciding to make this move I realized that all three of us are on the same brainwave...which might mean we're a little bit challenged, so ya'll best come check it out as soon as possible." We're thankful to have them as a part of our Grand Country family, and carrying on our tradition of family harmony on our Sunday shows.  Furthermore, it's such an honor to have Droopy Drawers Jr. performing on our stage. For more information, call the Grand Country Box Office:  417-335-2484 or visit GrandCountry.com.

Do you struggle to get agency clients to see the value of your agency's work? Does your pricing structure feel like it's completely out of whack? Not sure if your agency is competitively priced? Pricing and process are two areas where clients and agencies often have trouble finding common ground, but it can make all the difference when it comes to your agency's success. In today's episode we'll cover: Do you know your agency's value? How including the client in the process builds trust. #1 Reason you need to lead with strategy. Today I had the opportunity to chat with Tammy Dahlin, owner of digital marketing agency Element 212, based out of Indiana. Though she has a degree in marketing, like so many of us, Tammy somewhat fell into starting her own agency. As such, she found herself undervaluing her agency's services and struggling to find a balance between the amount of work she puts in and client expectations. When she figured out she needed to implement a process and invite clients into the process, she discovered her place as a strategic agency. Find out what Tammy learned along the way. Do You Know Your Agency's Value? Anyone who has been in the agency realm (or any business, for that matter), understands the complexities of pricing. You don't want to price yourself too high where you're not attracting any clients, but you don't want to go so low they don't take you seriously. When Tammy first started her agency, she quickly realized just how much she was undervaluing her work. She says she charged about $600 for her first project where other firms were charging upwards of $15,000. Between working too much and charging too little, Tammy and her team slowly became resentful of the process. In the beginning, it's hard to accurately balance the client's perception of what they are getting with what they are willing to pay. So Tammy made a change. She upped her prices to be more in line with the work she was actually putting in. But she was still getting pushback. Now the clients thought her rates were too expensive. How Bringing a Client into the Process Can Build Trust Naturally, Tammy knew the value of the work her team was providing. Unfortunately, her clients weren't able to see all the research that was going into each project. But then it clicked. Tammy's team was already doing market research with the client and their customers, a process she calls "brand insight." She decided to bring the client into it that process and most importantly, charge for it. This had a dramatic effect on Element 212's growth. Clients were now able to see what was going on behind the scenes and appreciate the process. By giving the clients an "inside look," Tammy and her team could establish trust and get their clients more involved. #1 Reason You Need to Lead With Strategy Everyone can execute, it's the strategy that sets you apart. When you lead with strategy, your client will view you as the authority. When you don't lead with strategy, they will view you as a commodity. Early on, Tammy decided to market her agency as a strategic agency. Now she has developed a system where she has biannual meetings with her team and her clients to talk strategy. If they want to implement the strategy — great. If not, she gives them tips to make sure they all stay on the same page. Element 212 is an agency that focuses on strategy at its core. By being transparent about the process with her clients and bringing them into this process, Tammy has finally found a balance between customer expectations and the value of her agency's work. Pricing and strategy are two of the most complex and difficult parts of running an agency. But it's so important to get a handle on these areas from the start. When you do, you'll find everything else comes so much easier. Looking for a Payroll and HR Solution for your Agency? Payroll and benefits are hard. Especially when you’re a small business.   In this episode of Enlightened Entrepreneur Podcast, financial expert Tammy Johnston talks about three critical skills every entrepreneur needs to have and develop if they are going to succeed in their business. As a highly successful financial adviser with 23 years of experience on financial services and insurance, Tammy has graciously shared a few useful tips about finance that a lot of people, both in and outside the business realm, can benefit from in improving how they manage their finances.   Key Questions Asked: What is the first critical skill that every business owner needs to develop when it comes to their finances? What tools can business owners use to become aware of what’s happening with their finances? For those who have already given the bookkeeping task to somebody, what are the ways around for them to get back to that awareness? What is then the second skill every business owner needs to have? What is the next stage that they need to focus on? What sort of planning tools does Tammy currently use in her business when it comes to finances? What is the right mindset that business owners need to adopt? How does Tammy go about finding like-minded and reliable individuals? What are the challenges that she faced and how was she able to overcome them?   Highlights of Lessons Learned:  Skills and Other Tips The first skill every business owner must develop is awareness. Most people are often so busy making money that they have no idea of what is actually going on with their finances. When Tammy starts working with somebody, the first thing she asks them to do is handle their own bookkeeping for a minimum of six months. For those who have already got somebody else doing their bookkeeping, make sure to sit down with your bookkeeper or having a phone conversation at least once a month and having a look at your reports. The second skill that business owners must develop is planning. Plan for where you want to go. Next stage you need to focus on and figure out is what brings in profit to your business and what can you be doing to improve your marketing strategies.   Mindset, Challenges, and Tactics As for the mindset, business owners need to be open-minded, they need to find competent and qualified individuals who will help bring out the most in them. The biggest challenge that Tammy had to deal with when she first started out in her business was the stress of not having the steady paycheck and not knowing exactly what’s coming. As a new business owner, you have to find ways of coping and keeping forward and being able to pay your bills. One way Tammy was able to do this was by reading good business books, another thing that helped her was having a circle of friends who knows she’s trying to do acts as her immediate support system.

Tammy Johnston Talks About 3 Skills That Will Help You Manage Your Finances Better In this episode of Enlightened Entrepreneur Podcast, financial expert Tammy Johnston talks about three critical skills every entrepreneur needs to have and develop if they are going to succeed in their business. Highlights of Lessons Learned:  Skills an Other Tips The first skill every business owner must develop is awareness. Mindset, Challenges and Tactics As for the mindset, business owners need to be open minded, they need to find competent and qualified individuals who will help bring out the most in them.

Provoking Your Greatness - Misti Burmeister

Should you fire talented employees who frequently turn work in late and call in sick? If you could just get them to start working on projects sooner, they wouldn’t have to overexert themselves, wind up sick, and miss another deadline.   How about the ones who hoard information and don’t play well with others? Don’t they understand that the company’s success depends on a team effort?   Of course, there are many reasons to fire an employee, but don’t make the same mistake Gale almost did.   Sitting across from Gale, I listened as she shared a story about Tammy, a young woman she hired nearly two years earlier.   “She was probably at the top of her class in college—she’s smart, but we can’t seem to get her to complete projects in a timely manner. I think it’s a cultural thing,” Gale, the CEO of a well-established company, said.   “What do you mean by a ‘cultural thing?’” I asked.   “She’s from _____ (another country), and that must be the way they do things in that culture. She’s probably also still doing what college kids do—wait till the last minute, and then pull an all-nighter.”   “Is she getting the work done on time?”   “No, and the team thinks we need to let her go. If she can’t get the work done on time, and she’s out sick constantly, we can’t have her on staff,” Gale said.   At this point, I had a clear understanding of the critical mistakes Tammy was making, and I could see why Gale was struggling. Tammy also adds value, knows the company, and cares about the end product.   “Have you or anyone on your team ever given her this kind of feedback?” I asked.   “No,” Gale said, with an inquisitive look on her face.   “Do you know her future goals?” I asked.   “When Tammy first came to the company, she wanted to do the work she’s currently doing.”   I suggested she get the answers to these questions before giving her feedback:   How are things going for you here? (Listen intently. Then, without defensiveness, repeat back what you heard to make sure you got it. Take notes.) Do you have the skills you need to do your job successfully every time? (Listen, and take notes). Are you meeting the people you hoped to meet, developing the skills you hoped to develop, and enjoying your experience here? If not, how can I help? (Listen, and take notes. Stay focused on listening.) If you closed your eyes right now, and it was suddenly three years down the road, what would you like to be able to say you did? What skills, experiences, and connections would you like to acquire in the next six months? (Listen, and take lots of notes. Even “I don’t know” is worth noting. Follow it up with, “If you did know…”) What do you do exceptionally well in your current role? Where do you struggle the most and why? (Please… Listen, and take notes. Assumptions kill these conversations.)   Once you’ve had this conversation authentically, you’ll know what you need to do to help employees succeed in their career.   For Gale, that may mean helping her find an opportunity with another employer. Or, Tammy may respond positively to the wake-up call and start completing her work on time.   After going through the questions above, you’ll have the foundation of trust necessary to provide guidance that gets results. Here are the three most critical elements to giving constructive feedback: consistently seek it (receiving teaches you how to give generously), timeliness (providing feedback as close to the problematic moment as possible builds trust), and specificity (what you did, and what you could do differently).   Whatever you do, don’t fire someone until you 1) know the answers to those questions, 2) help them advance in their career, and 3) share your own future aspirations and challenges. This is the good stuff of any relationship.   Here’s to Your Greatness,   Misti Burmeister   P.S. Tammy Saltzman The Continuous Reinvention of The Achievement Avatar is my guest. Tammy’s websites: http://www.tbslawpa.com, http://www.choicemediations.com, http://www.tammysaltzman.com, http://www.divorceconnectionnetwork.com, Tammy’s complete trust in her own inner voice and the unwavering courage to persevere has enabled Tammy to dream the biggest dreams, set the highest goals and consistently achieve success. One of her mom’s many mantras was always “if you can see it Tammy, then you can achieve it.” Tammy’s ability to reinvent herself time after time was built on this strong ideal as well as many other ideals she has learned along the way. Tammy has over 30 years of diversified business experience that now translates into helping others achieve their own success in life.  As early as 10 years old Tammy had embarked on her career in sales and marketing which included a paper route for Pennysaver, Avon, Mary Kay and Tupperware. Tammy left New York and the comfort of her family and moved to South Florida aka Paradise. It was then after she settled in that she decided to return to school to earn her college degree. In 1995 at 34 years old Tammy earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Legal Studies from Barry University, in Miami, Florida. Playing the odds, she sat for the LSAT (Law School Assessment Test) and applied to the 3 South Florida Law Schools, believing another mantra; “if it’s meant to be then it will be.” When Tammy finally graduated from law school at 37 from Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, she was awarded “The Most Outstanding Woman of The Year Award” from the National Association of Women Lawyers.
