In the early 2000s when Melbourne local Linda Hammond and her husband first came up with an idea for their business, it was just that - an idea. Fast forward to 2018. The Hammonds were breaking the internet with record sales, opening international locations, rubbing shoulders with The Kardashians and securing a a multi-million dollar deal where they sold the majority share of the business. Yes, you read that right. So how did they get there? On the show today, Linda sits down with Elfy to discuss how she used the power of social media to turn her "little idea" into an Internationally acclaimed fashion empire. When Lucy Bloom made her first speech to an audience (some 20 years ago) she was scared sh*tless. Everything in her told her she couldn't do it. Time to give up right? Wrong. She's also written 3 books, founded a production company and lead a not-for-profit in Ethiopia (just to name a few). But none of this would have been possible if Lucy had given up when she first started out. On the show today Lucy shares exactly how she learnt to find her voice, crafted her personal brand, built self-confidence and pretty much took over the world. Siff Haider, cofounder of Arrae, is today's guest on Female Founder World with Jasmine Garnsworthy. Siff started her career in journalism, running a blog on the side until it took off and became her full-time gig. When Siff came up for the idea for a natural supplement company, Arrae, she teamed up with her partner and used their weddings savings to launch the brand. As a bootstrapped business, influencer gifting was key to their launch. Siff's influencer strategy tips that we cover in the interview include: Involve aligned influencers even before launch. Siff sent product for feedback in a rolling pre-launch to generate initial buzz. Re-engagement is key. Arrae's gifting assortment is split into 60% sent to new influencers and 40% restocking influencers they'd previously gifted to stay top of mind. Paid partnerships should be lasting partnerships. Arrae doesn't do one-off paid collaborations and only works with creators when they've proven traction and are genuine fans of the brand. Karen Danudjaja, the bootstrapping baddie that built Blume to $7.5 million in sales and 2000 stockists (including Wholefoods!) is on Female Founder World today! The idea for a better-for-you latte line came to Karen in 2017 while working in corporate real estate, having multiple coffee meetings each day and then getting the caffeine jitters. She started off working a full time nine-to-five and also running Blume at night. By the time Blume hit around $200,000 in sales, Karen went all in and quit her day job to grow the company. “I felt like there was enough proof of concept, like returning customer feedback from retailers, that I was ready to go all in.” At the beginning cafes were her biggest customer, with healthy spots adding Blume's superfood lattes to the menu. But when lockdowns hit, 85% of Blume's business was food service—and it all shut down over night. Karen quickly brushed up on digital marketing and pivoted the company to ecommerce. “I took a digital marketing course March-April 2020 and then launched our first themed bundle for our ecommerce store in mid-April.” After that, the business shifted to ecommerce-first during the height of the pandemic, before settling into a true omnichannel strategy that's split 50% wholesale and 50% ecommerce and includes distribution across 2000 cafes, grocery, lifestyle stores, as well as the itsblume.com website. When Karen needed to find a cost-effective way to scale sales without hiring a team, she came up with a smart solution: build a separate, password-gated Shopify store with minimum order sizes for cafes and independent retailers to place bulk orders. “We duplicated our regular Shopify store, adjusted pricing and added a login. We have flows set up for them the same way we do for our DTC customers, targeting abandoned carts and returning customer, but set up specific for the needs of a retailer.” When bigger retailers like Wholefoods and Nordstrom wanted to stock Blume, Karen then built out her sales team. During all of this growth, Karen continued to bootstrap, which meant carefully managing cash flow was key. Her tip to other bootstrapped brands is to push back on retailers' standard 90-day payment terms to make sure invoices are paid more quickly. “We were really firm from the beginning with retailers that we couldn't do net 90 [to get paid for orders]. Because we were bootstrapped and we didn't have access [to cash], I just literally had to say no.” This year, after ending 2021 with $7.5 million in sales, Blume raised its first round of money from investors, closing $2.5 million in five weeks. Feeling inspired? We have the exact pitch deck Karen used to raise $2.5 million in five weeks available for you to download in the Female Founder World community home. It sounds like a neat little entrepreneurship story in hindsight, doesn't it? But what did Danielle have to give up when she launched Dandy? Why did she decide to sell after just two years? And what does life look like post-acquisition for a 32-year-old founder? Your Female Founder World host Jasmine Garnsworthy dives in during this episode of the pod. Enjoy! Quitting your day job. It's something most Lady Startups will have to do... eventually. Our guest today, Alana had actually tried to quit her fulltime job and it didn't work. Soon after quitting she got a job offer for a gig that sounded too good to be true and went straight back to her corporate life in pharmaceuticals. But this time, she didn't love it. So finally after years of brainstorming she made the leap and founded Eye Heart Science, a fast growing science education business based in Sydney. Today, Eye Heart Science is in 40 schools and Alana has a team behind her bringing fun science based classes to kids across greater Sydney. So what I want to know is, how did she go about creating an education based business? and and how did she upscale her business, when in the beginning it was just her teaching science to kids after school? In 2013 Instagram looked nothing like it does now. People were sharing super saturated photos of their dogs, their feet and what they were eating at their local cafe. But no one was using Instagram to market their business. Jess Hatzis-Walker and her co-founders knew that consumers were ready for a social first business model, so they gave it their best shot and launched Frank Body, a honest coffee with a cheeky voice. Soon enough Aussies everywhere were posing nude, or in a robe covered in this magic coffee scrub. It was the thing everyone wanted to get their hands on. Almost a decade on and Frank Body have over 800K on Instagram, they ship products to over 150 countries and sell one bag of scrub every minute. For over three years The Daily Aus was a side hustle but in 2020 what was making headlines became incredibly personal, black lives matter, the US election and COVID all had a part to play. In just 12 months their side hustle accumulated over 200K followers. So what's it like being just 25 and creating one of the most recognisable social news platforms in the country? and did Zara ever anticipate this level of success? Allira Potter isn't your regular Lady Startup. If Allira had to describe her work she would say, that she is an intuitive, a creator, writer, speaker, a model, an empowerment and mindset coach, manifesting queen, baby witch and an all-around spiritual sister. But Allira's life over 18 months ago looked nothing like this. She was newly divorced, working a corporate job, living pay check to pay check and had turned to partying as a coping mechanism. But then in early 2020 after a four-day bender, she realised something needed to give. So as the world went into lockdown Allira went on a detox and turned to her spiritual side. Turns out Allira's newly rejuvenated witchy side was actually something she could make a career out of, so now she works for herself. So how has Allira developed such a unique business, one without a rule book? And how has she developed a six-figure business in such a short space of time? The Apple Podcasts charts are one of the ways people find new shows. So how do they work and how do you get your podcast in there? In this episode I explain what goes on behind the scenes of the podcast charts, what stats influence them the most and why you don't need a huge amount of listeners to get featured. Releasing a podcast episode is already a pretty involved process so I'm sure you're not looking for more things to add on your to do list. But if the only content you're creating is the actual episode you're missing a huge opportunity. If you're going to put that much time and effort into releasing an episode you want to squeeze as much content out of that time as possible. So, in this episode I share how you can turn one podcast episode into multiple pieces of content which can not only help your workload but also help you promote your show.
