POPULARITY
President Trump erupted Thursday in a wild rage on Truth Social in which he appeared to blame pollsters for failing to register his world-historical success. “When will Polls reflect the Greatness of America at this point in time?” he fumed. Notably, this comes just after Democrats scored big wins in the Miami mayoral race and elsewhere, which analysts see as a sign that the Latino vote is shifting hard away from Trump. Not coincidentally, a new poll has Trump's approval on immigration plunging below 40 percent. We talked to William Saletan, staff writer at The Bulwark, about his great new piece on Trump's open agenda of ethnic persecution. We discuss the relationship between Trump's racism and his unpopularity, what the latest GOP losses show about the collapse of the MAGA coalition, what to make of the GOP's open embrace of full-bore ethnonationalism, and why it's (somewhat) heartening that the public is rejecting it so decisively. It's growing harder to shrug off President Trump's deranged threats toward Canada. In a new Fox News interview, Trump snarled angrily that Canada is “meant” to be a 51st state, explicitly speaking the language of imperialism. Meanwhile, Trump is adopting a very credulous line toward Vladimir Putin in the Russia-Ukraine peace talks. This comes as a surprising new poll shows that American opinion is shifting against a soft line on Russia, even as other polling shows public rejection of Trump's anti-Canada stance. We talked to The Bulwark's William Saletan, who has a good piece arguing that Trump's views of Canada and Ukraine are connected. He explains how Trump is now adopting the same view of Canada that Putin has of Ukraine, and argues that the public may be turning against Trump on both fronts. Looking for More from the DSR Network? After Christopher Wray resigned as FBI director, Donald Trump unleashed a long, angry rant on Truth Social, suggesting that a major purge of the bureau is coming—and that the targeting of his enemies will commence the moment Kash Patel is installed. Meanwhile, leading MAGA figures are ramping up pressure on GOP senators not to stand in Trump's way—and some of them are already signaling they'll likely fold. We talked to The Bulwark's William Saletan, author of a good new piece on the dangers of this moment. He explains that this is what it looks like “when a criminal takes control of law enforcement,” and lays out what it will take for us to resist. Learn more about your ad choices. Jenny and I conclude our discussion on a phenomenon we've observed on the contemporary scene in which committed members of the political left find an issue that has "crossed the line" for them, and rebel from the proposed orthodoxy, usually seeing only this issue as problematic, or as having a particular origin in recent times that is wrong and must be addressed, but missing the larger sense in which these problems are the natural logical outplay of the logic of the left, the ideology of Hegelianism/Marxism/Critical Theory/Wokism. "here's a question: does big picture, abstract thinking cause liberals to be less happy because they are removing themselves from the embodied here and now? After all, the ability to live in the moment and appreciate our lives as they exist does seem to be a key ingredient in day-to-day contentment. Or is it conservatives' concern with lasting marriage, strong family cohesiveness, and day-to-day sociality that tips the scales toward greater daily contentment and happiness?" Will Saletan, writer for THE BULWARK, came in for a conversation about a range of issues including what's really important; how the scientific method compares with our political way of behaving; how traffic rewards the wings; the culture of authority; recognizing our biases; the proclivity of deploying rhetoric in bad faith; the significance of what's happening in Ukraine; why he made the move from SLATE to the THE BULWARK; and how his own writing process has evolved. William Saletan wrote for SLATE for 25 years contributing over 2,700 pieces for the daily online magazine. He's also the author of BEARING RIGHT: HOW CONSERVATIVES WON THE ABORTION WAR. Will is now a writer at THE BULWARK who, as he says, questions everything.

Julio and guest co-host Jamilah King, deputy inequality editor at Buzzfeed News, talk about the latest in Congress, including Thursday's vote to temporarily stop a government shutdown, and the infrastructure and budget reconciliation bills. They hear from Representative Jamaal Bowman, of New York's 16th Congressional District, about the frustrating delay in passing immigration reform. And, they discuss the impact of vaccine mandates on the NBA. ITT Staff Picks:Stephen Crockett Jr. writes about how Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema are loving the attention that comes with being the roadblock to the Democratic agenda in this piece for The Root. “Republicans think that by voting against the debt ceiling hike, they're showing that Democrats are responsible for the debt. But they're really demonstrating that the security of the United States depends on Democratic control of Congress,” writes William Saletan in this piece for Slate. “But if the league's unvaccinated players are going to use their proverbial microphone to showcase their own lack of information—and potentially threaten their team's ability to compete—then high-profile players should use their own platform to call out their teammates,” writes Jemele Hill in this piece for The Atlantic. Dave and Tamler try to artificially bulk up their expertise on the ethics of performance enhancing drugs and end up raising a lot more questions than they answer. Why do we condemn certain methods for boosting performance on the playing field and praise others? Why is it OK to train at high altitudes but not in hyperbaric chambers that simulate high altitudes? Why is Lance Armstrong a villain and Graham Greene (who wrote many of his most famous novels on benzedrine) a hero? Is there genetic therapy to cure haunted child haircuts, and if there is, how can Tamler get access to it? Of course, no discussion on PEDs would be complete without clips from South Park and Sanford and Son. Also, David misremembers Lyle Alzado as a regular on an 80's sitcom because of a single appearance on "Small Wonder." We probably should have taken some podcast enhancing drugs for this one.
