Episode SummaryErin and Rachel travel 700 years into the future to discuss WALL-E (2008), Pixar's robot romance with an unintentionally anti-capitalist message. Fatphobia and misogyny make this dystopian tale unwatchable despite its endearing protagonist, striking animation, and moments of nostalgia. Episode BibliographyThe 81st Academy Awards | 2009. The death in March 2023 of US disability rights activist Judy Heumann provoked grief but also joyful celebration of a leader whose strategic instincts and sheer grit helped secure victories that improved peoples' lives. Heumann never lost her faith in activism - building power at street level. She led persons with disabilities and their allies in blocking traffic, occupying buildings and often literally putting their bodies on the line for the cause. Three disability rights advocates – Catalina Devandas, Alberto Vasquez and Peter Torres Fremlin reflect on that history and ask whether activism is still a central tool for their community. They discuss factors like inclusion and identity as sources of both strength and division, and the pros and cons of integrating disability rights work in the wider human rights movement. REMEMBER THIs, Jan Karski: “Humans have infinite capacity to ignore things that are not convenient”. We're back for our final week of Women's History Month, with another mixed bag show. We wrap up March with a bit of a look back for co-host Kerry's recent discussion of feeling the stigma of finishing her education late and feeling behind everyone. And reviewing the guests (Rebecca Singh and Daniella Mestyanek Young) who joined us in the first half of the month. But while the quote above was said by a Polish-Catholic man, who found himself in an extreme circumstance and who worked in the underground to warn the world about what the Nazis were doing to the Jews of Europe/specifically in Poland, discrimination anywhere, of any kind can grow if enough people look the other way. the local headline in London, Ontario when advocates and riders are pushing City Counsel to do more to improve paratransit: “Paratransit fails to get some disabled Londoners to meeting about fixing dysfunctional system”, Daryl Newcombe, CTV News, March 6 Isn't that just horribly hysterical? We discuss what paratransit is and a little about our own experiences using it in the past and about some of the resistance the counsel has been showing during the process, but there's got to be a way and we will share more updates on that in the weeks ahead. We also hear from Kerry's new phone. Listen to see if you can catch it, along with some signature sibling bickering thrown in there. Also, talk co-host Brian's early instrument practice on the trumpet comes up plus Kerry's clarinet too. And about Brian's draft night/season of fantasy baseball starting on his birthday here, he shares about the strangeness of being into a hubby others are not; though the earlier quote was from World War II, this draft is about sports, not war. So check out our mixed bag of topical goodies here, last but not least ending the show with a tribute to disability activist Judy Heumann (rest in peace), as we wave goodbye to March. Judith Heumann, known as the mother of the disability rights movement, died this month at the age of 75. Heumann's activism and leadership in Berkeley's pioneering disability rights movement included the “504 sit-in,” a 26-day occupation of San Francisco's federal building that eventually led to the passage of the Americans with Disability Act. Heumann used a wheelchair following a childhood case of polio, and when she tried to attend school, the administration denied her as “a fire hazard.” Heumann went on to work with the Clinton and Obama administrations as well as the World Bank on issues of accessibility. We'll talk with disability rights advocates who knew her about her legacy, and where the movement is headed going forward. Guests: Sandy Ho, philanthropist; founder, Disability and Intersectionality Summit; director, the Disability Inclusion Fund at Borealis Philanthropy Yomi Sachiko Wrong, Oakland-based disability justice activist, dreamer Jim LeBrecht, filmmaker and co-director with Nicole Newnham, "Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution" Arlene Mayerson, directing attorney, Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF)
Judy Heumann is known as the mother of the disability rights movement. Her advocacy and lobbying eventually led to the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Rebecca Cokley, U.S. disability rights program officer with the Ford Foundation, joins us to talk about what today's activists can learn from Heumann's legacy. Then, an investigation by the Washington Post uncovered evidence of a massacre in Tigray carried out by Eritrean troops just days before a peace deal was made. Katharine Houreld led the investigation and joins us. And, labor organizer Saket Soni's new book "The Great Escape: A True Story of Forced Labor and Immigrant Dreams in America" details his work in helping Indian workers lured to Mississippi to repair oil rigs post-Katrina and essentially imprisoned by their employers. Soni joins us.
Episode SummaryDespite competing with a similar insect-themed offering from DreamWorks, Pixar's sophomore feature film, A Bug's Life (1998), earned positive reviews at the box office and solidified the reputation of the animation studio. Although misogyny, racism, and fatphobia are sprinkled throughout, Rachel eagerly celebrates this movie as a depiction of Marxist class revolution; Erin is less enthusiastic. Disability rights activist Judy Heumann has been fighting for inclusion for over six decades, in ways that transformed legal and societal understandings of equality. Her life-long experience has included co-founding the organization Disabled in Action, working on Capitol Hill to shape landmark disability rights laws, co-organizing the extraordinary protest and advocacy efforts that spurred the implementation of Section 504, and advising presidential administrations and the World Bank on disability issues. In this conversational program, Heumann focuses on those aspects of her journey that are most salient to the perils and possibilities of the present. Heumann sees in this moment a fragile and imperfect democracy, but one that is nonetheless worth investing in. She also sees deep structures of exclusion, vigorously defended but also vulnerable to political pressure and moral suasion. Series: "UC Berkeley Graduate Lectures" [Health and Medicine] [Humanities] [Show ID: 37730]
