- As a teenager I was taught - as many are - that slip up once in the bed and you are pregnant- Always figured kids would simply happen but they weren't my one big dream that would make me satisfied in life. I have always been spontaneous and loved adventure and travel and possibility. - Decided to get married. Decided to have kids. 3 years later, not pregnant. - lucked out to be living in Cambridgeshire England (we're Canadian) at that exact time, as IVF was covered by public health for 3 rounds. - felt grateful and lucky- One fresh round, pregnant. Twins. Early miscarriage. - frozen round, 2 put in, one baby created on Canada day, ironically, and brought me my first child. - gestational diabetes, frequent monitoring, super healthy, early induction 37 weeks and 4 days. - emergency c section, with plenty of trauma, blood loss, full general anesthetic, baby with group b strep, 9 days in the hospital, husband not allowed overnight. - baby sick with snotty cold full 2nd month- then I felt like I was born to be a mother for 3 years. Brought my baby with me on adventures, Built a community of other spontaneous folk. - Got pregnant with second with no IVF, somewhat without trying- took control of birth, doula, different hospital, the full deal. - 2nd child 3 years apart. Very hard. Couldn't meet everyone's needs. Isolated in England. - Moved back to Canada March 2020 in height of pandemic - a dark year of feeling no purpose- then started an applied positive psychology course, then the coaching course, and found my community of people who want to learn similar things to me and found myself again. - now, I coach, I learn, I take small courageous steps and I'm building The Courage Club, where women meet, play, laugh, and try new things together to build our courage muscles...so that when we want to go for that big, audacious dream, our bodies and brains remember that we can do scary things. I'm really excited to share a conversation I had with Ariana Ross, a certified sommelier and the author of the book: Wine's Way To Art: A Treatise on Wine as Art and Why Art is Something We Need to Be Human. It is such a pleasure to talk with Ariana because she has the unusual ability to entertain ideas and argue a perspective without getting her ego involved. Conversation is a tool that she uses to hone her own thinking and to move further down the path in the pursuit of truth. Because of that I could talk to her for hours, so this discussion feels to me like just the beginning of a much bigger conversation. We delve into some pretty juicy topics including elitism in wine: how to separate that from expertise and acquired tastes and reverence, as well as questioning the idea of higher pleasures. We also ask whether it's appropriate to refer to wine as art, and what it means for wine to be approached as an art. Among many questions discussed and unanswered, we discuss the importance of the canon of wine (one n, not two, as in the prime examples and archetypes) and whether a canon exists for other types of wine besides the commonly understood European grape wine. We don't always agree, and that's the fun of it…Ariana allowed us to explore these perennially important ideas through her book, which seems extremely timely, and the result was a dynamic and candid exchange that has left me looking forward to the next conversation. @thesimplesomm https://whoisariana.com/ You Can Support this podcast by subscribing via patreon. Welcome to this conversation with two people who really inspire me, Andi Ashworth and Charlie Peacock. They provide ample hope from further down the road - having accumulated decades of wisdom in the public square as Nashville music producing influencers. Dare I say - few people have influenced our generation through music more powerfully than they have. I read their book, meaningfully titled “Why everything that doesn't matter, matters so much” and then awaited this conversation with giddiness, anticipation, excitement, a little bit of shyness. Maybe I was – and still am? – a little starstruck? I will let you decide. Have you ever asked, what can I do to mend the world, to mend my family or my own life? And if I could, is it worth it? Should I bother? Does my own small part in the world really matter? And so today, multi-Grammy-winner Charlie Peacock and his wife, delightful author Andy Ashworth, come to share their encouragement. Their book is a collection of 16 essays or letters. They are here to share their wisdom, calling us to discover and to join God's mission to love and care for a very hurting world. They are sharing with honesty, vulnerability, humility and wisdom from their own life experiences. They are beloved and trusted mentors. They invite us into a thought-provoking exploration of the many facets of the Christian culture care and culture-making in all areas - from the kitchen, hospitality, generosity, gardening all the way to Carnegie Hall and Grammy Awards. They talk to us about the theology of imagination and creativity, a vocation that provides a framework for all of life. I've found them providing a model for expressing love in marriage, in friendship, in citizenship, and every kind of work, even in the midst of our culture of cynicism, fear, exhaustion, oppression. I have found that each one of these 16 letters is a gentle, wise, humble, vulnerable, and thought-provoking nudge in the direction of God's powerfully ordinary purpose for each one of us. It doesn't matter what the future holds because we're invited to participate fully in the beautiful redemptive work of Christ. Can you begin to see why I can't wait to share this conversation with you? I hope you join us. This weekend, Pastor Whit concluded our How to Be Human teaching series as we celebrated the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ on Easter. Matthew 7:13-14, 24-29 ESV 13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. 24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” 28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes. Matthew 13:44 ESV “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy, he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field." Matthew 16:24-25 ESV 24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." John 15:5 ESV I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. Did you love this message? It's been a minute ya'll! The winds of change are blowing. There is a lot to reflect on right now, and Anna is here to be your mirror. In this ep, she gives us a tarot reading to check in on where we are at and how to get to where we are going as we drop into a new year. But before that, Anna is going to take some time to tell us where SHE is going, where she has been and what we can expect from her as she taps deeper into creativity and transformation herself. Over the last few years, we've all been digging around, tilling soil and trying to plant new things. Have you been feeling like it's time to turn a new page? We have! With so much going on in the world, it can be hard to get real with yourself about what you want, what is working or even what your motivations are for the things you dedicate your time to. Let's take a minute to sort ourselves out and see what the next chapter looks like.Resources :Write or DieKate DevineSarah McCollTell Me Why You Love It Submissions Channeling the Magician A Creative Cohort with Anna Book a Session with AnnaFollow How to Be Human on InstagramFollow How to Be Human on Substack
