Neurohacking: Nootropics, Selank, and Semax

The Peptide Podcast

Today, we're talking about how nootropics and peptides like Semax (See-max) and Selank (SEH-lank) work together to support cognitive health, improve focus, and reduce mental fatigue. Let's start with nootropics. These are substances that are designed to support and enhance mental performance. Some work by improving memory, others help with focus, alertness, or reducing brain fog. Nootropics can be: Natural, like L-theanine or Lion's Mane Nutraceuticals, like Alpha-GPC or CDP-Choline, which support neurotransmitter production Or synthetic, like Modafinil or racetams “RASS-uh-tams”, which are often used off-label to promote wakefulness and focus Most nootropics work by affecting levels of key brain chemicals like dopamine, acetylcholine, or norepinephrine. They don't “make you smarter,” but they can improve how efficiently your brain is working—especially under stress or fatigue. Now, let's talk about peptides—specifically Selank and Semax, which are two of the most well-known nootropic peptides. Selank is more about calming and emotional regulation, while Semax leans into cognitive enhancement and brain performance. Think of Selank as the anti-anxiety sidekick and Semax as the mental sharpener. Selank works by boosting GABA activity, which helps calm the nervous system. That's why it's often used to reduce stress and anxiety without causing drowsiness or dependence — unlike traditional anti-anxiety meds. Interestingly, it also slightly increases BDNF, the brain growth factor that supports memory and learning. Semax, on the other hand, has a much stronger impact on BDNF. It's derived from ACTH, but it doesn't raise cortisol levels. Instead, it enhances BDNF, dopamine, and serotonin activity, making it great for improving focus, mental energy, and even mood. And that's what makes them such a powerful combo for some people. Selank helps create a calm, clear mental space — kind of like reducing background noise — while Semax boosts the brain's signal, improving neuroplasticity, motivation, and mental clarity. Together, they offer a full-spectrum brain support: emotional balance and cognitive performance. Whether you're dealing with brain fog, anxiety, or just want to perform at a higher level, these peptides could be worth exploring. Stacking Nootropics with Peptides One of the most popular strategies for cognitive support is to combine or stack peptides with nootropics. For example: Selank pairs well with L-theanine for calming, focused energy. L-theanine, an amino acid found primarily in green tea, promotes relaxation and reduces stress without causing drowsiness by increasing calming neurotransmitters like GABA and serotonin. Lion's Mane mushroom, a natural nootropic found in both wild and cultivated forms, can be stacked with Semax to naturally support memory, focus, and neurogenesis. Semax can be used with Alpha-GPC to support both short-term concentration and long-term brain health. Alpha-GPC (Alpha-glycerophosphocholine) is a choline-containing nutraceutical, often derived from soy or sunflower lecithin, that acts as a powerful nootropic. It increases levels of acetylcholine, a key neurotransmitter involved in learning, memory, focus, and muscle control. Because of its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier efficiently, Alpha-GPC is often used to enhance cognitive function, support brain health and neuroprotection, and improve physical performance by boosting power output and recovery in athletes. Semax can also be used with CDP-Choline for memory support, brain fog, and age-related cognitive decline. It too is a nutraceutical that provides choline, which the brain uses to produce acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter essential for memory, learning, and focus. It also delivers cytidine, which converts into uridine—a compound that supports neuron repair and brain cell membrane synthesis.  Alright, so one question we get a lot is, “What's the difference between CDP-Choline and Alpha-GPC?” It's a good one—because they're both great choline sources, but they work a little differently. Alpha-GPC delivers choline more directly, which means you'll feel that boost in focus and mental energy a bit faster. It's especially handy if you're doing high-intensity brain work or even something athletic. Lastly, I also want to dive into something a lot of people are curious about, Modafinil and racetams (RASS-uh-tams).  Modafinil (Provigil) is a prescription, stimulant medication used to treat sleep disorders (e.g., narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea) and shift work disorder. It's also used off-label as a focus-enhancing nootropic. It works by promoting wakefulness in the CNS. Researchers don't know exactly how it works, but it appears to affect areas in the brain that control attention and wakefulness. Racetams (e.g., Piracetam, Aniracetam, or Oxiracetam) are a class of compounds that enhance acetylcholine activity and neuroplasticity, leading to better learning, memory, and focus with subtle, non-stimulant effects.  While Modafinil provides a noticeable surge in alertness and productivity, racetams offer a more gradual cognitive boost that can be ideal for sustained mental performance. Just remember, peptides provide foundational support—helping your brain repair and function better long-term. Nootropics can then layer on immediate effects, like sharper focus or improved mood. Modafinil (sold as Provigil®) is a prescription stimulant used to treat sleep disorders like narcolepsy and shift work disorder. However, many people—including students, professionals, and entrepreneurs—use it off-label as a “smart drug” to boost focus, productivity, and mental performance. But what happens if you take modafinil while on hormonal birth control? Does it make contraception less effective? Are there any benefits—or just risks? This guide https://modafinil.org/modafinil-and-birth-control/ covers everything you need to know about mixing modafinil and birth control pills. As discussed in the guide, modafinil revs up your liver enzymes, making them break down contraceptive hormones faster—meaning your birth control pills, patches, or rings could become significantly less effective. It can slash estrogen levels by up to 18%, increasing the chance of pregnancy. And if pregnancy does happen, modafinil's FDA Pregnancy Category C status means there's a risk of harm to the fetus. Some wonder if combining the two could help with focus or mood swings, but the reality is, the risks far outweigh any possible perks. Hormonal birth control already comes with side effects like nausea and emotional ups and downs, and modafinil might make those worse while sabotaging your contraception. So what's the safer move? Is there any interaction? Does the mix affect your health? Always check with your physician to find a birth control method that keeps you protected without messing with modafinil's brain-boosting benefits.Timestamp00:45 What Is Modafinil Drug?03:19 Basics about Modafinil and Birth Control05:14 Modafinil & Birth Control from a Scientific Point of View07:11 Benefits of Modafinil07:42 Long-Lasting Wakefulness Effects09:23 Helps Highly Impulsive Individuals Inhibit Bad Behaviors10:15 Improves Logical & Emotional Intelligence10:51 Ameliorates Memory and Executive Function11:23 Beats Fatigue11:50 Ameliorates Cognitive Performance in Non-Sleep-Deprived Individuals12:16 Improves Mood and Motivation for Work12:50 Weight Loss14:11 Benefits of Birth Control14:26 May Ameliorate Verbal Memory15:05 May Foster Working Memory and Attention15:26 Could Elevate Resilience to Stress16:10 Benefits of Mixing Birth Control Pills and Modafinil16:44 Can Ameliorate Emotional Memory17:09 May Lessen ADHD Symptoms17:47 Can Ameliorate Quality of Sleep18:18 Can Help Control Depression19:23 Possible Side Effects of Taking These Drugs Together23:10 Modafinil & Birth Control Tabs: Is It Worth the Risk?

Modafinil (Provigil) is a CNS stimulant medication. I cover modafinil pharmacology, adverse effects, drug interactions, and much more on this podcast episode. You should be aware that modafinil is a Schedule 4 controlled substance so it does carry a risk of dependence and addiction. Modafinil can cause CYP3A4 induction and lead to lowering the concentrations of many medications. This includes antiepileptic agents and oral contraceptives. The most common adverse effects of modafinil include ramping up the body and causing symptoms such as anxiety and insomnia. Cardiovascular changes are a risk with modafinil as this medication can contribute to hypertension and tachycardia.

Modafinil and armodafinil are popular meds used to treat excessive daytime sleepiness & off-label for various health conditions including ADHD, age-related cognitive decline, & multiple sclerosis, and as a cognitive augmenter by healthy people. However, they have some key differences that might influence which one you choose. Modafinil is sold under the brand name Provigil®, while armodafinil is marketed as Nuvigil®. So, what's the difference between these meds, and which one is the better option for you? This guide https://modafinil.org/modafinil-vs-armodafinil/ provides a detailed comparison between modafinil vs armodafinil, highlighting their differences in chemical structure, effects, and side effects. Modafinil is a racemic compound, meaning it contains both (R) and (S) enantiomers, while armodafinil is enantiopure, containing only the stronger (R)-enantiomer. As a result, armodafinil tends to have a more potent effect, with a quicker onset and a longer duration of effect, compared to modafinil. Ultimately, modafinil is preferred by people seeking more moderate effects, while armodafinil suits those needing a stronger, quicker response. Chronic fatigue (CF) is a debilitating condition marked by severe exhaustion lasting at least six months, which worsens with mental or physical activity and doesn't improve with rest. CF often affects people aged 20 to 40, but it can also impact teens and younger children. This condition isn't just about being tired; it deeply affects the ability to perform daily tasks, leading to a significant drop in quality of life. Modafinil, a widely used cognitive enhancer, is commonly prescribed for sleep disorders like narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder (SWSD), and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Physicians also use it off-label to treat a variety of conditions, including chronic fatigue. It helps boost wakefulness and improves focus by affecting neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which are often low in people with CF. This guide https://modafinil.org/modafinil-chronic-fatigue/ covers everything you need to know about modafinil for chronic fatigue, from understanding its basic mechanisms to tips on how to take the medication safely. Modafinil, a widely used cognitive enhancer, is commonly prescribed for sleep disorders like narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder (SWSD), and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Besides, healthy individuals from all walks of life use it off-label for productivity & cognitive purposes to achieve an edge. Modafinil, under the brand name Provigil, is prescribed for conditions such as narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and shift work sleep disorder (SWSD). It works as a wakefulness agent by affecting neurotransmitters such as dopamine, histamine, serotonin, orexin, and norepinephrine in the brain. Off-label, it's used for several conditions, including depression, ADHD, and chronic fatigue. In addition, Sunosi, which contains solriamfetol, is intended to increase alertness in individuals with excessive daytime sleepiness due to conditions such as OSA and narcolepsy. It works as a dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, categorized as a stimulant. Since both drugs treat similar conditions, what are their differences and similarities? The guide https://modafinil.org/sunosi-vs-modafinil/ elaborates on Sunosi vs modafinil dosage, potential side effects, and interactions. The guide also covers the difference between modafinil and Sunosi across various aspects, including their forms, drug classes, uses, and safety profiles. It outlines similarities and differences between the two meds, addressing efficacy, potential for misuse, and controlled substance status. Additionally, the guide offers insights into where to procure these drugs online from trustworthy vendors. Phenylpiracetam and modafinil are two popular cognitive-enhancing meds known for their distinct yet overlapping functionalities. Invitados: …. Modafinil, often marketed under the brand name Provigil®, is recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a wakefulness-fostering agent. While its primary role is in managing sleep disorder conditions like narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, and shift work sleep disorder, it has transcended these boundaries. Its off-label uses extend to addressing conditions like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, and cognitive impairment. Further, modafinil has found a dedicated user base among students, professionals, business executives, and individuals seeking to bolster their cognitive abilities and productivity to achieve an edge. In contrast, Piracetam belongs to the racetam group of nootropics. However, the nootropic may not enjoy the same level of recognition as modafinil, but its safety profile and cognitive-enhancing potential have earned it a place in the world of nootropics. Piracetam's history dates back to the 1960s, and it has been touted for its ability to prevent age-related cognitive decline, assist in epilepsy management, and improve memory. In this episode, I explain how medications such as Adderall, Ritalin, Vyvanse and other stimulants work to increase focus and treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). I explain the brain circuits involved in focus and the key roles dopamine and norepinephrine play in their regulation. Then I explain how stimulants such as Adderall and Vyvanse can increase focus and reduce hyperactivity in kids or adults with ADHD, and how and why Ritalin and other medications (e.g., Modafinil, Guanfacine) may work better for some. I explain the long-term effects of ADHD medications on height, cardiovascular health, hormones, predisposition to addiction and psychosis, and whether these treatments can be used and then stopped. I also discuss the immense individual variation in dosage sensitivity for these medications and the negative side-effects that occur from recreational use. This episode ought to benefit anyone with ADHD, their parents, those on ADHD medications or anyone curious about how these medications work. For the full show notes, visit hubermanlab.com. Have you ever considered using biohacking techniques to optimize your mental performance and well-being? In this episode, Sean shares his journey into biohacking, floatation therapy, and nootropics, all in the pursuit of mental optimization. He shares his experiences with various tools and techniques, including floatation tanks, nootropic stacks, and even psychedelics. But are these methods right for everyone? Tune in to find out and explore the exciting world of biohacking and mental optimization.   Sean McCormick is a certified life and performance coach with an impressive client base, including NFL and MLS players, CEOs, and television stars. He is also the host of the highly regarded Optimal Performance Podcast. As an expert in performance biohacking, Sean has tested, studied, and applied numerous health and performance approaches for both himself and his clients. This extensive experience has allowed him to develop a keen understanding of how to achieve optimal results with minimal effort.   Sean's approach to coaching is focused on helping people improve rapidly with the least amount of work required. His impressive track record speaks for itself, and his clients have achieved remarkable success under his guidance.   Key Highlights: [00:01 - 10:25] Opening Segment ●     Sean shares his background and how he started his journey into biohacking and mental optimization. ●     He also shares his experience of opening a floatation therapy center, which combined his interests in biohacking, recovery, meditation, and altered states of consciousness. ●     He quit his high-paying job and invested all his money, time, and passion into opening the floatation therapy center. ●     He explains how this led him to his current role, where he enjoys doing what he loves every day.   [10:26 - 14:34] Floatation Tanks for Well-being and Meditation ●     Sean recommends trying floating in a floatation tank to improve their well-being and jumpstart their meditation practice. ●     He suggested trying floating three times, as the first time can be strange and distracting. ●     The best floats are after a hard workout when endorphins and dopamine are high. ●     Float tanks can be a great way to release muscle soreness and pain.   [14:35 - 36:41] Nootropic Experience, Neurochemistry, and Resistance Training ●     Sean discusses his experience with nootropics and his journey of experimentation with various substances, starting with Alpha Brain, then trying Modafinil and Rams. ●     He expresses skepticism towards proprietary blends and the potential dangers of buying substances on the dark web. ●     He eventually found a nootropic he liked called Neuro Fuel, which is from a company called Natural Stacks and is open source, meaning they know exactly what's in it. ●     Everyone has different neurochemistry, and there is a test called the Braverman assessment that can help individuals understand which of the four main neurotransmitters they are either dominant or deficient in. ●     He also suggests trying different nootropic stacks and tracking the effects to find the right ones for each individual. ●     He discusses the effectiveness of using the X3 bar for variable resistance training.   Key Quotes: “What works for you is not gonna be what works for me, and what works for you now might not be what worked for you six months ago because your neurochemistry is changing.” -Sean McCormick   “Everybody's different. Your neurochemistry, Nate, is different than mine.” -Sean McCormick   “The key here is to experiment with different nootropic stacks and then track it, keep a journal.” -Sean McCormick     CONNECT WITH SEAN:   Seanmccormick.com   @realseanmccormick on IG   https://bravermantest.net/   https://www.naturalstacks.com/products/neurofuel   Apollo tool  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/clinically-proven-wearable-for-stress-sleep-sex-and/id1004775385?i=1000605068127   https://bioptimizers.com/shop/products/sleep-breakthrough   https://apolloneuro.com/products/apollo-wearable   Ketamine Episode - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/control-alt-delete-for-your-brain-with-ronan-levy-from/id1004775385?i=1000596368237   Book a free call with Sean calendly.com/coachseanmccormick   Getnatesbook - This book is a must-have for anyone looking to drop belly fat and eliminate love handles permanently with expert tips on the 7 daily investments for health and wealth, the one type of cardio you need to include, and a handy checklist to hold yourself accountable to your goals. How to Buy Modafinil at Walmart?

Modafinil, dubbed the “smart drug,” is a drug used to treat narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder, and obstructive sleep apnea, but it is also used off-label for cognitive enhancement. It is available under the brand name Provigil and in generic versions in 100 mg and 200 mg strengths. Now, the big question is: can you buy modafinil at Walmart? Well, this guide https://modafinil.org/buy-modafinil-walmart/ covers tips on buying modafinil at Walmart, a major retail chain in the United States, and it also discusses its legality, uses & benefits, & other nootropics that can be ordered there. While Walmart does stock modafinil, it is almost always out of stock online, so the best way to obtain it is to visit the pharmacy section in person. However, a prescription is required to purchase modafinil. The guide further discusses other modafinil alternatives that are also available at Walmart, such as Force Factor, Neurofuse, and Focus Pep. It's essential to understand that, unlike modafinil, these alternatives aren't widely tested & verified to be safe in the long run. Compared to the “smart drug”, there are few users of these drugs & limited reviews, and thus, there's no telling how efficacious they would be. Besides, apart from Walmart, as revealed in the guide, there are numerous other online pharmacies where you can purchase modafinil. Nevertheless, not all of them are reliable, as counterfeit versions are widespread. Your optimal option for obtaining modafinil pills that are entirely safe and efficacious is to obtain them from reputable and verified suppliers mentioned in the guide, so you don't get counterfeit tabs. His mission here today, and in his life, is to share with the world the latest discoveries in health and wellness to help people break through mental and physical barriers, to accomplish the unimaginable, and to be superhuman. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:    Bec: Hey Stephen! I have a 5 week old little girl and I was wondering if it is safe to use my Joovv red light panel on her to reset her circadian rhythm and help her build her melatonin? If so what time of day would be best and for how long? And if not, what age would it be safe for her to start using it?   Angela: My mother is 83 years old and suffering from Parkenson's. She is on Levo/Cabidopa, Aspirin, Calcium, Vit D3 (but only 2000 iu). She weighs about 135 lbs so I believe she needs more Vit D3. She is also on iron and Modafinil. I believe the Modafinil is to help with her daytime sleepiness. She struggles with drinking enough water and gets constipated (probably from the iron too) and frequent UTIs as well. She fell for the 2nd time and broke her hip again so she is wheel chair bound, and movement is very minimal. All in all she is a hot mess and it's really hard to watch her decline this way. What would you suggest for someone that age and at that level of fragility?   Ryan: Hello Doc, Wanted to see if you could briefly explain the connection or potential of albumin binding to testosterone and lowering the free levels of test in the body. My albumin has chronically been about a 5 or 5.1. My total testosterone has always been high, but my free doesn't seem optimal. I'm 31 and just looking to see what I can do naturally. I'm an IHP 2 so I understand the basics of increasing testosterone naturally. But wanted to hear your thoughts on albumin and testosterone connection, how can we lower albumin levels to a better range. Lower protein? Lower sodium? Any genetic issues I should look into? Liver or kidney? Etc. Thanks!   Emily: Hi Dr. Cabral! I am wondering if you could share your thoughts on sorbitol intolerance, how to test for it, and how to treat it? I have been diagnosed with IBS in the past (which was an unhelpful diagnosis at best) and have recently been wondering if I may snuggle with sorbitol intolerance as well, which I have not been tested for. My thinking about this stems from the intense gas, bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort I have been struggling with daily lately. These symptoms are not new for me, however, I have noticed they are more intense and frequent lately, and am wondering if this is connected to my increased sorbitol consumption over the summer from stone fruits (peaches, plums, nectarines…). Thank you for your work! I am saving up now to take Levels 1&2 IHP:)   Sara: Hi there, I love your podcast - thank you for your work! Does fasting help the clean up of damage from chronic alcohol abuse on the body and brain? Thank you! Sara   Linden: Hi there! I would love any help I can get for lowering Candida while living in mold. Unfortunately I have no other option but to be in this environment for a few more months, but I'm dealing with pretty intense Candida and I know mold/mycotoxins can really fuel it's overgrowth. Any recommendations on a diet approach to keeping it as low as possible & other ways to support my body while I live here? Cognitive enhancing drugs are claimed to improve cognitive functions such as learning and attention. However, little is known presently about the characteristics of off-prescription cognitive enhancing drug users or their perceived everyday experience with these drugs. Modafinil has been the drugs of desire for a long time now. If you ever saw the Bradley Cooper movie called limitless, you probably wish you had access to this drug.  Laboratory studies have even shown that it may have potent antioxidative and neuroprotective effects. Modafinil is also of a high interest to the US military for enhancing alertness and reducing battle fatigue. So why isn't everybody on this drug? Well In today's podcast, I host a guest who knows more about the science of modafinil than anyone. Dr Jonathan Wisor who is a professor of cell biology at Washington state university and researchers circadian rhythms. The talented Mr. Noots, or as the powers that be know him, Mark Effinger, is the brilliant mind behind Nootopia formulas, a batch of life changing brain optimization products you've heard me talk about frequently on this show ever since I was gifted a sample set by our mutual friend and collaborator, Matt Gallant. Of course, I got to experimenting with them right away, probably too much as you'll learn in this episode. They've become an integral part of my daily routine – just such a game changer – and I've seen a few products in my days of experimentation. Mr. Noots brings the energy in this one, and the mind blowing science, in this fun and free-wheeling episode – starting with a tragedy that's inspired triumph, into a sidebar where we celebrate the heritage of rock n' roll, and sticking the landing with a mushroom trip tennis tournament. Buckle up for a wild ride. And if, by the end of this episode, you're curious to check out the amazing Nootopia formulas that we cover, visit nootopia.com/lukegenius for an automatic 10% off your purchase.    00:07:27 — Becoming Mr. Noots Childhood experience with meditation, engineering, and spiritualism   His wife's tragic passing as a result of opioid addiction  First experiments with nootropics in the 90s Newsworthy.ai Neurotransmitters and the different brain states  00:44:38 — Treating Neurochemical Imbalances  The hyper focused side of ADHD GABAlicious by BiOptimizers (coming soon) Modafinil's use and history  The process of launching a pharmaceutical The truth about SSRIs  NCBI and examine.com as resources  The first ever Buddhist-friendly mouse lab  Frequency extraction methods in mushrooms  01:18:50 — Nootopia Product Deep Dive  The Brilliant Mind Blueprint Using the Nootopia customization survey  30-day Nootopia Journey mobile app (Apple/Google) NectarX by Nootopia Mental Reboot by Nootopia Power Solution by Nootopia The Apex by Nootopia The War of Art by Steven Pressfield Focused Savagery by Nootopia Upbeat! by Nootopia Brain Flow by Nootopia Falling Down (1993) General cognitive benefit to using nootropics  01:55:21 — Nootropics & Microdosing  Luke's microdosing approach Mark's role in Oregon's psilocybin legislation Mr. Noots trips his way into a tennis championship Questions 67 And 68 by Chicago (1969) Round Here by Counting Crows (1993) Music as the language of the heart  Luke's desert island playlist  Meet Molly's healthy (and legal) sister, Katy (edm.com) Collagenius by Nootopia   More about this episode. When most people think of stress, they think of their job, traffic, tense relationships, current events, things like that. But the root of so much of the stress we experience comes down to a deficiency in one overlooked nutrient — magnesium. So, if you're ready to help your body deal with stress, instead of putting a band-aid on it after the fact, you're going to want some Magnesium Breakthrough. I had to mix them together, make a big mess, and it took up a bunch of space in the cabinet. But Cacao Bliss has changed the game. Now I have amazing ceremony-grade organic ingredients like raw cacao, turmeric, black pepper, MCT powder, cinnamon, monk fruit, coconut nectar, lucuma, mesquite, and Himalayan Salt all in one.
