Join us as we respond to a recent episode of the Soul Boom podcast, featuring The Office star and devoted Baha'i, Rainn Wilson, alongside YouTube icons Rhett & Link who've been very candid about their deconstruction journey away from historic Christianity. So how does a committed Baha'i like Rainn Wilson interpret their spiritual unraveling? And is there a faithful, thoughtful way to respond from a biblical worldview? Tune in as we explore these questions with our good friend Steve Matthews. Steve brings clarity and discernment to the conversation—and you can check out more of his work at @ExposingtheCults. In early 1820 a young farm boy by the name of Joseph Smith believed he had a vision of God the Father and Jesus Christ appearing to him, exhorting him not to join any of the existing churches of his day, for they were all corrupt. Just over 200 years later in 2023 in Wilmore, Kentuck in the main chapel on the campus of Asbury Theological Seminary, something of a revival began. For two weeks, thousands of people from all over the world came to Ashbury to see for themselves what was happening. During these two weeks, people prayed and sang worship songs. Many Christians, however, debated as to whether or not this was a genuine revival or just an emotive outpouring of mostly Gen-Z'ers. And most Evangelical Christians criticize Joseph's Smith's first vision as either legendary, completely fabricated, or theologically aberrant. How can we rightly discern whether or not people's personal experiences are truly from God? This week on the Profile we wrap up our conversation with theologian and literary scholar Dr. Jeffery Barbeau about his new book The Last Romantic - C.S. Lewis, English Literature, and Modern Theology and consider more of Lewis's insights and how they can equip us to think biblically about personal religious experiences.Jeffery Barbeau (Ph.D., Marquette University) is professor of theology at Wheaton College, Editor of The Coleridge Bulletin, and a writer on British Romanticism, religion and literature, and the history of Christian thought. If you have ever had a deeply moving personal experience with God, you know it can be something that words cannot adequately convey. Perhaps it is deeply emotional, powerful, and moving. The experience solidifies your conviction that what you believe about God is true. You might also believe God "spoke" to you in that moment. But given that there are a multitude of other religions today with devotees who claim to have similar experiences, how can we know that what we have experienced is an authentic movement of the God who is there? This week and next on the Profile, we talk with theologian and literary scholar Dr. Jeffrey Barbeau about his new book The Last Romantic - C.S. Lewis, English Literature, and Modern Theology and how Lewis's thoughts about Romantic poetry might give us some insight about the nature of personal religious experiences and how properly to think about them.Jeffery Barbeau (Ph.D., Marquette University) is professor of theology at Wheaton College, Editor of The Coleridge Bulletin, and a writer on British Romanticism, religion and literature, and the history of Christian thought. 277 When Cults Split [Part2] The ICC Disfellowships Kip McKean who joins new RCW splinter groupThis week on Apologetics Profile, Watchman senior apologist Dr. Brady Blevins continues his conversation with counter-cult apologist Steve Matthews about the recent split of the International Christian Church (ICC) and its disfellowshipping of its charismatic and controversial founder, Kip McKean. The breakaway sect of the ICC now calls itself the Restored Church Worldwide and in January, made a surprising move to accept and "restore" McKean as a member in good standing. Here on part two Steve will share with us the details of the split and give us helpful insights as to how we can recognize and prevent heretical doctrines and practices from deceiving and dividing the body of Christ. To hear more about Kip McKean and the ICC, you can listen to our previous episodes with Steve here. This week and next on the Profile, Watchman senior apologist Dr. Brady Blevins talks with counter-cult apologist Steve Matthews about the recent split of the International Christian Church (ICC), founded by the controversial and charismatic leader Kip McKean. Not only did the ICC recently split, it also disfellowshipped McKean himself for inappropriate behavior, some of which McKean has publicly acknowledged. The new breakaway from the ICC now calls itself the Restored Church Worldwide (RCW). In addition, this past January, the RCW "restored" McKean, not in a position of leadership, but as a member. Steve shares with us some of the details and background of the split and the history of McKean's association with the ICOC, the ICC, and now the RCW. Sun, 16 Feb 2025 07:00:00 +0000 https://efm-industry-insights.podigee.io/67-from-local-to-universal-serial-storytelling-for-global-audiences 547dccba98c2816635fec9482d0e85f0 Industry Insights – The EFM Podcast is presented by the European Film Market of the Berlinale. Hosted by editor and journalist Michael Schneider, it delves deep into the rapidly evolving film industry. In this episode, we bring together a diverse group of industry experts for a dynamic conversation about the ever-evolving world of TV series. We delve into what makes a series truly international—what allows a show to break through cultural and language barriers and resonate with audiences worldwide? Is it the warmth of relatable characters that audiences are seeking during challenging times, or is it the exploration of social-political issues and dystopian themes that capture our collective attention? Ultimately, the answer lies in universally compelling stories that speak to viewers beyond the confines of a single market. While it may be a tougher feat for comedy, there's a clear call for future series to transcend these boundaries and reach a global audience. In this discussion, Anna Rohde, Steve Matthews, Maria Cervera, and Paul Telegdy offer their unique perspectives on the international series market, providing predictions on where global audiences are headed next. They also explore the current trends shaping the industry, including the impact of financial shifts. Tune in to hear the experts tackle the future of series content and its journey across the globe. The Berlinale Series Market is the EFM's boutique market for serial content from all over the world. From February 16 to 19, industry experts, creatives, buyers and distributors will meet again at CinemaxX at Potsdamer Platz and Gropius Bau. His portfolio included Pustina, Umbre, Blinded By The Lights, Uspjeh, The Sleepers, Foodie Love, Gösta; and from Banijay Entertainment's footprint specifically, 30 Coins (Pokeepsie), Beforeigners (Rubicon), and Beartown (Filmlance). Additionally, Matthews is dedicated to mentoring talent, and set up Banijay Bootcamp, a specific programme for scripted creatives. Before joining Germany's distribution and production house Beta Film GmbH as International Creative Executive & Content Editor, Anna Rohde studied dramaturgy, philosophy, and literature at Munich's Theatre Academy and at Ludwig Maximilian University Munich. She also teaches at several writing programs including Berlin's Serial Eyes and Spain's screenwriters' guild-sponsored master. We conclude our three week deep dive into the International Christian Church with Part 2 of a two part examination and response to the ICC with Steve Matthews from ExposingTheCults. The ICC is an aggressive group which claims to be "the very Movement of God" and can be found on college and university campuses across the country and operating in dozens of nations around the world. In this series we have traced the origins of the ICC from the establishment of the mainline Church of Christ in the Restoration Movement, through the movements established by Kip McKean which include the very controversial Boston Church of Christ, the International Churches of Christ (the ICOC), and the International Christian Church. We have also taken a look at the Restored Church Worldwide which has recently split off from the ICC, and have responded to the movements' teachings about discipling relationships and central leadership. In this episode we respond to the verses used by the ICC and the mainline Church of Christ to try to erroneously prove that baptism is necessary for salvation, and demonstrate how salvation comes through faith in Christ alone. Please consider partnering with Cultish to continue this ministry: HEREFor a free resource from our guest on the ICC please visit http://www.watchman.org/iccThe ExposingTheCults website is coming soon! This week, we kick off a three-week deep dive into the International Christian Church (ICC) with a look at the current split within the movement. Many ICC members are choosing to leave and join the Restored Church Worldwide (RCW), forcing a tough decision: remain in the ICC to preserve its unity, which they've believed to be “the very Movement of God,” or follow other disciples into a new movement that's excited to restore the Book of Acts in this generation. In this episode, countercult apologist Steve Matthews and former longtime ICC member Coltin Rohn examine the growing divide between the ICC and RCW, offering a third alternative grounded in Scripture for struggling ICC disciples. Don't miss this powerful episode, and be sure to tune in next week as we continue our deep dive into the roots of the ICC, the International Churches of Christ, and the Campbell-Stone Restoration Movement that laid the foundation for the creation of the Boston Church of Christ in 1979. 204 The Baha'i Faith [Part 2] with Steve Matthews and James WalkerJesus once asked His disciples who they thought He was. Rightly did Peter confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Such a confession was not revealed to Peter by flesh and blood, but by the Father, as Jesus told Him. There are adherents of the Bahai'i Faith, an offshoot of Shiite Islam that began in 1844, who claim they follow the teachings of Jesus too. There are some 8,000 Baha'i centers of worship in the U.S. and many Americans adhere to the Baha'i faith. But who do the Baha'i say that Jesus is? Is he the same Jesus of the Bible? This week on the Profile we continue our conversation with counter-cult apologist Steve Matthews, who continues to unpack the syncretistic and contrary doctrines and practices of the Baha'i faith. Steve Matthews is a Christian countercult apologist who is not only passionate about researching the more established cults, but also in responding to the newer emerging groups as well. He has his M.A. in Christian Apologetics from Trinity International University and is involved in launching ExaminingTheCults.Related Links: Free access to some related Watchman Profiles: Watchman Fellowship 4-page Profile on The Baha'i Faith by Robert Pardon: watchman.org/Bahai Watchman Fellowship 4-page Profile on Shia Islam by W. You have probably seen the bumper sticker "COEXIST" made up of several different symbols representing different belief systems and religions. But that bumper sticker is a command, an imperative. The fundamental question about that bumper sticker is "Who is issuing this command?" The Baha'i Faith is no exception to this inclusivism. They attempt to affirm that other religions are valid revelations of God and even ascribe to some of the teachings of Jesus. But this inclusivism is not really inclusive, as the only proper interpretation of the world's religions is given through the ultimate authority of the Baha'i faith, Baha'u'llah, who died in 1892. This week James Walker, the president of Watchman Fellowship, speaks with counter-cult apologist Steve Matthews who gives us an in-depth analysis of the Baha'i faith and why their doctrines of inclusivism and of Jesus are both contradictory and in error. Steve Matthews is a Christian countercult apologist who is not only passionate about researching the more established cults, but also in responding to the newer emerging groups as well. One hallmark of most any religious cult today is that there is no other way to God except through the cult leader and obedience to his deceitful doctrines and deceptive practices. Cult teachings and commands twist Scripture familiar to Christians and create a climate of fear and works-based salvation. This week Brady Blevins, Senior Apologist at Watchman Fellowship and Steve Matthews, author of our 4-page Profile on the movement known as Shincheonji, continue their discussion about how this disciplined, doctrinally-deceptive, militant cult twists Scripture, infiltrates churches in the U.S. and how you can be prepared to respond with solid biblical truth. Shincheonji Church Of Jesus (SCJ) or the New Heaven New Earth church (NHNE) is a South Korean fringe church that is infiltrating churches across the United States in an attempt to gain new members. Many pastors around the country have testified that they have personally encountered this organization coming into their churches and starting bible studies while concealing and sometimes blatantly lying about their affiliation with Shincheonji in an attempt to deceptively lead church members to join their organization. In this video I interview STEVE MATTHEWS who gave them a bit of a taste of their own medicine by infiltrating their church to learn more about what they teach and how they operate.
