She began her career working for the veteran journalist Bill Moyers and has been a producer, cinematographer, and correspondent for several news programs on PBS. Our guest is an Emmy and Peabody award-winning documentary filmmaker, Lynn Novick---a formidable and respected PBS documentary filmmaker with thirty-plus years of experience in the business.Her archival mini and docu-series documentaries bring historically true events to the big screen alongside her filmmaking partner, Ken Burns. You've most likely seen some of her landmark documentary films. In the mid-1980s, she applied to film school but did not pursue that lane when she couldn't find a documentary filmmaking-specific program. Instead, she sought out apprenticeships. Starting at the PBS station in New York City WNET, for six months.And then worked for Bill Moyers as an assistant producer on a series of projects, including her debut production in 1994 with Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth, followed by A World of Ideas with Bill Moyers, etc. The Civil War is a comprehensive survey of the American Civil War.Novick's decades-long collaboration with Ken Burns emerged in 1989 and has led to the co-production of a number of renowned docu-series. First, there was the highly acclaimed ‘The Civil War' which traced the course of the U.S. Civil War from the abolitionist movement through all the major battles to the death of President Lincoln and the beginnings of Reconstruction. Her vast experience as a researcher comes in handy on these kinds of projects, she explains during our convo. Originally from Shanghai, China, Master Huang moved to the United States to study architecture and cultural anthropology, and later DanceIn the 1960s, Master Huang forged a significant collaboration with philosopher Alan Watts, which led him to Esalen. There, he became a beloved teacher and formed meaningful connections with thought leaders such as Huston Smith, Gregory Bateson, and Joseph Campbell. He and Joe taught together at Esalen until Joe's death in 1987.Master Huang is an author of many books including the classic Embrace Tiger, Return to Mountain. His contributions include pioneering modern dance in the Republic of China and sharing the stage with luminaries like the Dalai Lama and Jane Goodall. He has been an assembly member and presenter at The Council for the Parliament of the World's Religions and has been a keynote speaker for the YPO (Young Presidents' Organization) and WPO (World Presidents' Organization) and at major global gatherings in China, India, Switzerland, Germany, South America, South Africa, and Bali. Two American Families: 1991-2024, a special, two-hour documentary filmed over more than 30 years, is a portrait of perseverance from FRONTLINE, Bill Moyers, and filmmakers Tom Casciato and Kathleen Hughes that raises unsettling questions about the changing nature of the American economy and the impact on people struggling to make a living. In 1997, when Philip Yancey submitted his manuscript to his publisher, he had serious doubts that his new offering (which followed his popular book, The Jesus I Never Knew) would find an audience. He knew his evangelical readers. In Yancey's mind, the chapters on a Democrat President (Bill Clinton) and a fellow author who “came out” as gay (Mel White), would not set well - especially when he called for “grace.” To his surprise, What's So Amazing About Grace became his best-seller. Today, 25 years later, Philip and his publishers agree. The need to apprehend and exhibit grace is greater today than ever in our polarized world. After making some revisions - mainly updates - the book has been released. Ken welcomes back one of his favorite guests. After reminiscing over some good times together, they talk about the book. Better - they talk about grace. Amazing grace. Yancey shares his growing-up years -  the racism that dominated his church, his neighborhood, and his Southern state (Georgia). They talk about his friendship with Bill Clinton, who read his books and regularly met with Philip's friends, Tony Campolo and Gordon McDonald. They explore his friendship with Mel White, who for years was the ghostwriter for high-profile evangelical leaders: Francis Schaeffer, Billy Graham, Pat Robertson, Oliver North, Jim and Tammy Faye Baker, W.A. In this episode, Dr. Paul Earley describes how his own experience with addiction and recovery led him to a career in addiction medicine. He shares how addiction affected him and his work, along with the personal consequences of his illness. He also touches on misconceptions about addiction and those with addiction and emphasizes that addiction is a complex and complicated illness. Dr. Earley shares that there are “many roads to peace,” and he believes it is especially helpful to be around others who are also in recovery. He goes on to discuss the importance of developing gratitude and being helpful to others and the transformation in recovery from being self-centered to becoming other-centered. Dr. Earley talks about the need to combat the stigma related to addiction, including the significance of using person-first language, and the efforts ASAM has undertaken toward this end. He emphasizes that addiction is a chronic illness, like diabetes or hypertension, and should be treated as such, and the role genetics plays in one's risk of addiction. By using the metaphor of wood kindling catching fire, Dr. Earley describes the way addiction works and how science shows the complexities of addiction and its effects on the brain. He discusses medications that are available to treat addiction and shares a meaningful story that demonstrates why he treats addiction. Lastly, Dr. Earley offers advice and insights to the next generation of addiction medicine professionals. Dr. Earley has been an addiction medicine physician for over 35 years. He treats all types of addictive disorders and specializes in the assessment and treatment of health care professionals. Dr. Earley speaks and trains on topics of addiction, its treatment, and addiction among health care professionals. In addition, he trains therapists on the neurobiological basis of addiction and psychotherapy. In his travels, he has provided training in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Switzerland. Dr. Earley is the author of three books and numerous articles on addiction and its treatment and has contributed to the ASAM textbook Principles of Addiction Medicine, as the author of the chapter Physician Health Programs and Addiction among Physicians. He is one of the contributing authors of The ASAM Criteria®. Dr. Earley's work was featured in the documentary series on addiction entitled Close to Home by Bill Moyers. It's all a matter of perspective, and perspective is often a matter of choice. Have you ever read (or been read) The Snow Queen (1844)? It's a classic children's fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, the storyteller behind The Little Mermaid, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Princess & The Pea, and The Ugly Ducking. Elements of this fairytale are used in Disney's Frozen, which hit theaters 10 years ago today, as well as C.S. Lewis' The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. In the tale, the Devil creates a mirror with the cursed ability to make the beholder see ugliness in beautiful things, and wickedness in what is good. It also accentuates the largess of negative things. Everything is worse. In the mirror, “the loveliest landscapes look like boiled spinach and the best people appear ugly, or as if they are standing on their head — their faces distorted and unrecognizable. The smallest freckle spreads over one's entire nose and mouth.”Yeah, this seems like something a demon would do. Knowing just how susceptible people are to their reflection and to first impressions, this mirror could change the hearts of mankind and the attitude of the entire planet. And it does. In a battle of sorts with God's angels, the mirror is shattered into billions of pieces. The shards, some microscopic in size, fall to Earth and bore into the eyes and skin of unsuspecting people. We know how easy this is in real life. Anyone who has ever been at the beach has experienced a gust of wind that kicks up the sand furthest from the waterline. It gets in your eyes all too easily.Once the shard is in your eye, your perspective is changed, as if you see through the glass as a lens on life.In this tale, negativity and a sour outlook on the world is foisted upon unsuspecting individuals. It's not their choice. But the utility of the story is to consider how the Devil's glass shard may play a role in your real life. Someone said something to you that felt like an attack. Was it? Or are you just inclined to take it as such? The movie you paid $50 to go see in theaters didn't quite meet your expectations. Did you try judging the film separately from your lofty expectations? On its own merits instead of yours….You're caught in Thanksgiving traffic on the road home. A total standstill. Have you been inconvenienced or is this merely a fine opportunity to exit the car and stretch your legs? (Yes, this was our drive home last week from Nashville) Epictetus put this struggle in simple terms, “It is not events that disturb people, it is their judgments concerning them.”Marcus Aurelius would later write in Meditations, “If you are pained by any external thing, it is not this thing that disturbs you, but your own judgment about it. And it is in your power to wipe out this judgment now.”Within Stoicism is a long trail of clever comments and observations about perception. If the philosophy were to be boiled down 3 Pillars, that would be one of them. Just as your eyes can deceive you, your impressions can as well. Question your inner monologue, that voice which is inclined toward cynicism and wicked intent. Maybe that thing your spouse, boss, sibling, girlfriend, or boyfriend said was not meant to hurt you — maybe they just lack your skill with words, and perhaps they lack some self-awareness about the way their words sound. This is a choice. Saint Thomas Aquinas defined love as “The choice to will the good of the other.” Sometimes it will take an act of Will to see the best in a situation, a movie, a person, or their words. Remove the glass shard from your eye. Flush it out this week. And when it returns, which it will — rinse and repeat. This is the way. Thank you for reading Geeky Stoics. Professor Larry R. Churchill, Emeritus Professor of Medical Ethics at Vanderbilt, discusses “Biotethics Reenvisioned,” a just-published book he co-authored with Wake Forest Professor Nancy M. P. King and UNC Professor Gail E. Henderson. The authors, appropriately, argue “bioethics needs an expanded vision” or beyond one that has predominately focused on patient autonomy, beneficence and nonmaleficence.  The field needs to take “a more robust role” they write and begin to address upstream issues including social determinants, health disparities, structural racism, or in sum begin to meaningfully address social or distributive justice.  The field needs to move beyond what the authors' term “lifeboat ethics” or “lifeboat framing” where issue beyond the bedside are largely if not completely ignored. The impetus for their thinking is largely, no surprise, the COVID pandemic that according the CDC has to date been responsible for 1.35 million excess deaths. During this 31-minute interview Professor Larry Churchill begins by defining “lifeboat ethics.” He discusses the harm or damage caused by the failure by the bioethics filed to address upstream justice issues resulting from social determinants, He briefly discusses scholars, e.g., Charles Taylor and Norman Daniels, who have productively commented on the social dimensions of justice and his sense of how their lifeboat framework criticism been received by the profession. We discuss at some length the book's last and lengthiest chapter “Bioethics and the Global Warming Crisis” and what bioethicists working on issues of social justice can do to educate, improve public literacy and inform policy. Larry R. Churchill is Professor of Medical Ethics Emeritus, Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Prior to Professor Churchill taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was Chair of the Department of Social Medicine. Professor Churchill is a member of National Academy of Medicine and a Fellow of The Hastings Center. He is the author of seven books, including Ethics for Everyone: A Skills-Based Approach (2020, Oxford University Press). Dr. Bandy Lee saw it coming – the violence foretold in Donald Trump's election. While millions of Americans were still trying to figure out if Trump was just a crude playboy and fast-talking con man she felt a duty to warn the country about dangerous possibilities stemming from a man who lacked the mental fitness to be president. For almost 20 years she had been trying to understand violence. It was her calling. After earning medical and divinity degrees while studying at Yale and Harvard, and a stint at Massachusetts General Hospital, she joined Yale's faculty to teach in both the school of medicine and the law school. In her clinical practice, she treated inmates in maximum security prisons. And in time she began applying psychiatric concepts to public health and safety.
