Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of She's A Small Wonder: A Small Wonder Podcast. Today I covered, S3E19: I'll Drink To That, which aired on February 20, 1988. In this episode, due to Vicki's mishandling of terms, Child Services Officer Mrs. Fernwald thinks Ted is an alcoholic and threatens to take Vicki away unless he joins AA. I thought this episode was just ok, I wish it had more meat to the episode like an after school special type simular to what we got in Season 2's Chewed Out episode. I just feel so much more could have been done to make this a better episode, raise the stakes a little bit. Mrs. Fernwald, the woman who is too obsessed with this family, she's practically a stalker, going so far to barge into their home on an unannounced visit because she happened to just be in the neighborhood and pawing through the Lawson's trash looking for evidence to comdemn the Lawson's as unfit parents. Is she like this with every family who's case she's assigned? If I were them I'd have the DCFS do an investigation on her, if she even works there. Who really knows? and I also covered S3E20: Big J, the D.J., which aired on February 27, 1988. In this episode Vicki imitates Lyle Alzado to help auditioning Jamie. This was a kinda fun episode, granted we are introduced to a new character Ida Mae, Brandon's sister. She's just annoying, not Brindle level, but I guess they needed someone to replace Bonnie who is apparently away taking care of her mother for a week. Is this how they write her out of the show, and then they just extend her stay away indefinitely? I hope you enjoy the Podcast Episodes and I'll be back with two more soon. Have a great weekend!

You like having fun? Well check out 361. Benny and RZ are back, and they're breaking it down SO. There's some high-level baseball talk including an update on Benny's Fantasy league which he's earmarked to win! You should all send him letters of encouragement. There's also football talk which includes the Bears, AND the damn Raiders. Specifically the filth and funk of Lyle Alzado. They of course pay homage to the late, great James Earl Jones. OHHHH yeah. And the boys receive Fan Mail from a VERY serious VIP. Get into it. Or else.

Anna from Cinema Slab returns and we have an interesting conversation about the little known film, Neon City. It was a cold watch for all three of us and the film left us "whelmed." That said, it's still a soft recommend overall from the group. What left us wanting was made up for the "star" studded cast featuring Michael Ironsides, Lyle Alzado and Vanity along with other actors that you don't get to see very often outside TV. Is it great? Nope. Was it fun? Yes.

PWR is back and we are going back to the movies with the 80'S TV show "Learning the Ropes!" "Learning The Ropes" was a Canadian-produced sitcom that aired on CTV in Canada and in syndication in the United States from September 1988 to March 1989. The series stars Lyle Alzado as Robert Randall, a teacher who works as a professional wrestler in the evening. Although his children knew about Randall's double life, the family was forced to keep it secret at school. The series featured guest appearances by many wrestlers of the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). The sitcom was shot in Toronto... Sit back and enjoy this nostalgic trip back to memory lane!

The Franchise: Denver Broncos

From 1976 to 1982, the Denver Broncos featured a 3-4 defense, nicknamed the Orange Crush, that was as good a defensive unit as the NFL has ever experienced.  A hard hitting, fearless crew from front to back, the Orange Crush starred football legends including Lyle Alzado, Randy Gradishar, Tom Jackson, Louis Wright and Billy Thompson.  They were led by Defensive Coordinator, Joe Collier, one of the great coordinators in NFL history and became the driving force behind the Broncos first trip to the Super Bowl, Super Bowl 12 in early 1978 against the Dallas Cowboys in New Orleans.  Visit Truthplusmedia.com for more info!

Today on It Was A Thing on TV we will learn important life lessons about struggling with two jobs as a wrestler and a teacher along with the importance of holding on to your balls. First, when late 80s family sitcoms and wrestling overlap, the end result is the short-lived Canadian entry Learning the Ropes, starring Lyle Alzado and the stars of the NWA.  We also determine the Canadian equivalents of TV shows it seems everything goes back to. Then, from the era of Deal or No Deal, we get a game of luck, truth telling, psychology, some memory, and lots of balls.  2/3 of us didn't like it.  If you like it, you likely will really enjoy Golden Balls.  It was popular for a brief period of time, but quickly faded away to obscurity.  Link to weirdest Split or Steal round ever:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0qjK3TWZE8 And of course follow us at all our social media feeds over @ItWasAThingOnTV and e-mail us for show suggestions and feedback over at contact@itwasathingontv.com

Today we are joined by Dr Jonathan Gelber, author of the book Tiger Woods’s Back and Tommy John’s Elbow: Injuries and Tragedies That Transformed Careers, Sports and Society (Skyhorse Publishing, 2019). Gelber is an orthopedic surgeon with the Olmstead Medical Center in Rochester, Minnesota. A long time athlete, Gelber examines several athletes through the prism of the “Cobra Effect, ”a phenomenon that occurs when an attempted solution to a problem results in an unintended consequence. And sometimes, that solution might even make the original problem worse. Drawing on his vast medical background, Gelber looks at athletes such as Len Bias, Hank Gathers, Magic Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Sr., Lyle Alzado and more. And, of course, Tiger Woods and Tommy John. The situation of every athlete Gelber examines, he asserts, usually has two effects: the obvious one, and a secondary outcome that was unexpected. The flawed evangelism of Alzado, who used steroids and later had brain cancer, or the death of Bias, which resulted in a change in drug laws in the United States, are two pieces of a fascinating narrative that is certain to provoke more discussion about athletes, sports and society. Julie picked some interesting and obscure films for the podcast this time. We start off with 1988's Destroyer with the late, football superstar Lyle Alzado playing a terrible criminal who is executed for his long list of crimes, but who may not actually be dead. The cast has some other familiar faces from the 80s in it, even Norman Bates himself, Anthony Perkins, who is clearly having a great time hamming it up. We follow that up with 1990's Invasion Force, from low budget powerhouse David A. Prior. The most recognizable person in the film is Richard Lynch who plays and evil military commander who is leading a group of commandos in an invasion of a small southern American town. The connecting thread between the two is that they both focus on a group of filmmakers who get caught up in proceedings they were NOT expecting. They are essentially "films-within-films" and that little twist adds a lot of interest to both. Let us know what you'd like us to look at next by writing to flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com.  You can also reach us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!

Dave and Tamler try to artificially bulk up their expertise on the ethics of performance enhancing drugs and end up raising a lot more questions than they answer.  Why do we condemn certain methods for boosting performance on the playing field and praise others?  Why is it OK to train at high altitudes but not in hyperbaric chambers that simulate high altitudes?  Why is Lance Armstrong a villain and Graham Greene (who wrote many of his most famous novels on benzedrine) a hero?   Is there genetic therapy to cure haunted child haircuts, and if there is, how can Tamler get access to it?  Of course, no discussion on PEDs would be complete without clips from South Park and Sanford and Son.  Also, David misremembers Lyle Alzado as a regular on an 80's sitcom because of a single appearance on "Small Wonder."  We probably should have taken some podcast enhancing drugs for this one.  LinksPerformance-enhancing drugs [wikipedia.org]Benzedrine [wikipedia.org] What do Auden, Sartre, and Ayn Rand have in common?
