POPULARITY
It's not just the MAGA or the Woke crowd. According to Greg Lukianoff, CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), free speech in America is under existential threat from all political sides. While he's long criticized campus cancel culture from the left, he now opposes Trump's coercive targeting of big law firms, media companies, and universities. The Stanford Law trained Lukianoff argues that Trump's actions—removing security clearances, barring lawyers from federal buildings, and threatening media mergers—violate constitutional principles. Five Key Takeaways * Bipartisan Authoritarianism: Lukianoff fights free speech threats from both sides—campus cancel culture from the left that he's criticized for years, and now Trump's government coercion of law firms, media, and universities from the right.* Trump's Legal Warfare: The administration is removing security clearances from lawyers who opposed Trump, barring them from federal buildings (including courthouses), and threatening media companies' business deals—unprecedented attacks on legal and press freedom.* Institutional Cowardice: Major law firms like Paul Weiss capitulated quickly, offering millions in pro bono services to Trump, while others like Covington & Burling stood firm. Media responses have been mixed, with some caving under pressure.* Free Speech is Fragile: Lukianoff argues free speech isn't humanity's default state—it requires constant defense and can easily revert to authoritarianism when not actively protected by institutions and individuals.* Technology Accelerates Crisis: Social media and AI are speeding up existing problems of polarization and institutional decay, making the current free speech crisis more acute and unpredictable than previous eras.Greg Lukianoff is an attorney, New York Times best-selling author, and the President and CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). He is the author of Unlearning Liberty: Campus Censorship and the End of American Debate, Freedom From Speech, and FIRE's Guide to Free Speech on Campus. He co-authored The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure with Jonathan Haidt. Most recently Greg co-authored The Canceling of the American Mind: Cancel Culture Undermines Trust and Threatens Us All—But There Is a Solution with Rikki Schlott. Greg is also an Executive Producer of Can We Take a Joke? (2015), a feature-length documentary that explores the collision between comedy, censorship, and outrage culture, both on and off campus, and of Mighty Ira: A Civil Liberties Story (2020), an award-winning feature-length film about the life and career of former ACLU Executive Director Ira Glasser.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In the third lecture of the Sophia Lecture series, Professor Douglas Hedley embarks on an intellectual journey that explores the enigmatic nature of play and its profound impact on human life, drawing from ancient philosophies and modern psychological theories. Delving into the works of Heraclitus and Plato, Hedley examines the paradoxical relationship between play and seriousness and how this dynamic shapes our understanding of life's deepest questions. He discusses the transformative power of poetic language, the importance of embracing the child's soul, and the role of play as a bridge between our inner realities and the external world. Furthermore, Hedley reflects on mental health, cultural shifts, and the significance of the humanities in providing a sense of purpose and meaning, ultimately arguing that engaging with foundational texts and embracing play can help us navigate the complexities of modern life and contribute to our overall well-being. Douglas Hedley is a Professor in the Philosophy of Religion at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow at Clare College. His work spans the fields of philosophy, theology, and psychology, focusing on the intersection of ancient wisdom and modern thought. Curious about Outrage Addiction? Outrage addiction is a behavioral pattern where individuals repeatedly seek out and engage in anger-inducing content or situations, often through social media, news, or personal interactions. This behavior can create a cycle of anger and indignation that becomes addictive due to the brain's dopamine response to these emotional stimuli. Over time, this addiction can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and a sense of isolation, negatively impacting personal well-being and community dynamics. Ever since Jonathan Haidt joined us on The Russell Moore Show, listeners have been sending in questions for him. So, on this episode, Russell Moore welcomes Haidt back to the show for a discussion of his new book titled The Anxious Generation, the effects of the digital landscape, and the relationship between mental health and religion. Haidt describes how religious communities are taking the lead in providing some protection from mental health problems. He and Moore discuss the ways that modern life lends itself to overprotecting our children in the real world and under-protecting them online. They talk about what childhood is, how it's been rewired, and the subsequent impact on young people. They consider the unique traits of Generation Z, the power of religious communities, and why people of faith are statistically happier. Moore and Haidt explore the common quest for meaning and purpose, how to shepherd children in a virtual world, and how to account for differences in boys and girls without resorting to misogyny. Their conversation also covers the damage of pornography, distractions in worship settings, and how to encourage friends and families to communally steward digital devices. The right to free speech applies even when the speech is offensive to you, and true First Amendment defenders will protect the rights of those who don't agree with them – even if that means defending both conservative judges and drag shows. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression has written defenses of a range of cases, including conservative Judge Stuart Kyle Duncan whose Stanford event was disrupted by protestors, an art history instructor who lost his job after showing a medieval depiction of Muhammad, and a Texas college that canceled a charity drag show. “FIRE will be there advocating for our clients and for the First Amendment freedoms of every public university student — no matter how they express themself.” Greg Lukianoff – president of FIRE – says their mission is to “defend and sustain the individual rights of all Americans to free speech and free thought.” Greg is an attorney and NYT bestselling author. Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt has been explaining the human condition to us better than anyone else. He first did it with his book The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion, which explored why people were so passionately divided over politics and religion, and argued that people are fundamentally religiously inclined creatures. Then, he did it again with The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure, which laid out why kids today—especially on college campuses—have become so intolerant of opinions that conflict with their own. Now, he's done it once more with his new book, The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness. This time, Haidt explains what so many parents have been confused by for the last decade: Why are kids today more anxious than ever, more depressed than ever, more risk-averse than ever, lonelier than ever, and less social than ever? It's pretty simple, Haidt argues: We changed childhood. The mass migration of childhood, Haidt says, from the real world to the virtual world has completely changed what it means to be a kid. By replacing free and independent play and quality time with friends with the isolation of screens and phones, we instigated what he calls the “Great Rewiring of Childhood.” What resulted, he argues, is a childhood that is “more sedentary, solitary, virtual, and incompatible with healthy human development.” Today, Haidt explains how this massive change happened, its detrimental effects on kids, and what actions we can take—both in our own lives and legislatively—in order to reverse course and free the anxious generation. Greg Lukianoff, President of the Foundation For Individual Rights And Expression (FIRE) and author of the new book, “The Canceling Of The American Mind,” visits A Special Place to explain once and for all that cancel culture is real. For the much-anticipated followup to the seminal “The Coddling Of The American Mind,” Greg teamed up with 23-year-old wunderkind Rikki Schlott to show how cancel culture is much more than a moral panic. In fact, it's a manifestation of the social dysfunction that results from people batting for power and status in a culture that has come to value grievance over resilience. And in case you find yourself in arguments with people who take the position that Cancel Culture Doesn't Exist Because Louis CK Is Still Performing™, Greg cites several recent examples of blatant speech suppression (including at Stanford Law School) that you'll want to write down and keep in your back pocket. Finally, as FIRE co-sponsored the recent Free Press debate in L.A. about whether the sexual revolution failed (in which Sarah and her partner Grimes DESTROYED gently but definitively toppled the opposition), Greg and the womyn/girlx do some Monday morning quarterbacking of the event and also discuss the confounding press coverage. At Veritas Academy, we read books. We use chalkboards. We sit around tables with students and have in-depth discussions. We get our Grammar School students to retain information by moving and shouting to chants and songs. We write essays - with pencils and paper. And we require all high school students' phones to remain in their lockers for the duration of the school day. Veritas - like most classical Christian schools around the country - is decidedly a "low-tech" kind of school. Are we doing our children a disservice by sending them into a high-tech world woefully unprepared to use the latest technology? In this podcast, Head of School Ty Fischer begs this question to our guests - Graham Dennis, Veritas Dean of Students, and John Hayward, Veritas alumni, former Upper School Dean at Covenant Christian Academy in Harrisburg, and senior pastor at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Their discussion leads to the resounding conclusion that, no, we most certainly are not impeding our children's ability to thrive in our modern world by limiting their use of technology. In fact, the opposite holds true: we are uniquely preparing them to flourish in their careers, communities, and families by cultivating virtues and skills that many of their peers may sorely be missing. Listen in to get some thoughtful perspectives, and be inspired on the benefits of a low-tech education! Free speech is a bedrock principle that has helped to sustain democracy and catalyze tremendous growth and prosperity in America. At the same time, it's a right that is often misunderstood or taken for granted. The pervasiveness of technology and increased political polarization has only made free speech issues more complex and often controversial. Greg Lukianoff and Darpana Sheth are our guests on this episode of Voices of Freedom. They discuss the fundamentals of free speech and make the case for why it's important to protect all speech. Topics Discussed Free speech protections under the First Amendment FIRE's updated mission and why it chose to expand its focus Why free speech must be preserved on college campuses California's law to compel professors to adopt certain views and Florida's law prohibiting professors from expressing certain views How to ensure that books remain protected speech and are age appropriate in school libraries The impact of Section 230 and whether it should be reformed The future of free speech in America Lukianoff is the president and CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), an attorney, and the author of Unlearning Liberty: Campus Censorship and the End of American Debate, Freedom From Speech, and FIRE's Guide to Free Speech on Campus. Most recently, he co-authored The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure with Jonathan Haidt. Sheth is an attorney and Vice President of Litigation for FIRE. Darpana joined FIRE after 10 years with the Institute for Justice, where she litigated cutting-edge constitutional cases to protect property rights, economic liberty, and other individual liberties in federal court.
Chapter 1 What's Coddling of the American Mind about"The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure" is a non-fiction book written by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt. It explores the rising trends of fragility, emotional vulnerability, and intolerance on college campuses in the United States. The book argues that well-intentioned efforts to protect students from discomfort and harm have unintentionally contributed to a culture of "safetyism," where individuals are shielded from experiences that may challenge their beliefs or cause discomfort. Lukianoff and Haidt discuss three "great untruths" that they believe contribute to this trend: the untruth of fragility (the idea that students are emotionally and psychologically fragile), the untruth of emotional reasoning (the idea that feelings should be prioritized over facts), and the untruth of binary thinking (the idea that issues can be reduced to simple black-and-white dichotomies). By analyzing various case studies and research findings, the authors suggest that these trends not only limit intellectual growth and critical thinking but also hinder young adults' ability to cope with the complexities of the real world. They argue for the importance of fostering resilience, intellectual diversity, and open dialogue as essential components of education. "The Coddling of the American Mind" sparked significant debate and gained attention for its critique of certain aspects of campus culture and its exploration of the potential consequences of overprotecting students.Chapter 2 Why is The Coddling of the American Mind A Good BookAccording to reddit comments on The Coddling of the American Mind, "The Coddling of the American Mind" by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt is widely regarded as a good book for several reasons: 1. Thought-provoking analysis: The book offers a thoughtful analysis of the current cultural climate on college campuses and in society at large. It delves into the concept of "safetyism," which refers to the culture of protecting individuals from any form of discomfort or offense, and explores its implications and potential negative consequences. 2. Insights into psychological well-being: The authors draw on psychological research and provide insights into the factors that contribute to mental health issues among young people. They explore concepts such as resilience, the importance of facing challenges, and the potential harm caused by overprotection. 3. Balanced perspective: Rather than presenting a one-sided argument, the authors strive to present a balanced view of the issues, considering both the benefits and drawbacks of various viewpoints. They encourage readers to engage with differing opinions and challenge their own beliefs, fostering critical thinking. 4. Empirical evidence: Throughout the book, Lukianoff and Haidt support their arguments with empirical evidence, drawing on research studies and data from various fields. This evidence-based approach adds credibility to their claims and encourages readers to base their understanding on solid factual foundations. 5. Practical suggestions: The book goes beyond analysis and offers practical suggestions for addressing the problems it highlights. It provides guidance on how to foster a more open and intellectually diverse environment on college...

33 min. Maureen wants to talk about Jonathan Haidt. He is a resource teaching about regulating nervous systems in the midst of social fragility and political brittleness. He's a guy who is in the forefront of calling out aspects of popular culture which he believes are well intentioned but misguided. Jonathan Haidt's article in Atlantic Magazine, “The Coddling of the American Mind,” more or less went viral as a result of calling out teaching practices which insulate children, and young adults, from struggles and challenges in learning. Haidt's written other books. The titles alone are compelling: The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom. The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas are Setting Up A Generation for Failure Haidt's book and subtitle for The Happiness Hypothesis ties right into Maureen's book: Landscapes for Learning, Ancient Wisdom for Modern Humans, which became the foundation for launching this podcast. Maureen says: “It's not the kids fault.” Maureen and Pierre discuss learning, education, the concept of ‘unintended consequences' and many more topics in this pod. Come join us for a dive into current topics in education and political correctness.

Welcome to Season 2, Episode 12 of the Gospel for Everyone. In today's episode, we'll wrap up our conversation on biblical worldview. For the last few episodes, we've been thinking about what it means to develop a biblical worldview. A worldview is the lens we use to make sense of the world. It's a systematic way of looking at things. And everyone has a worldview. So we've been talking about some of the major themes in a biblical worldview: creation and identity and covenant, just to name a few.In this episode, we will turn our attention to something that is really at the heart of a biblical worldview. In this episode of The Optimistic American, Paul Johnson sits down with Dr. Emily Basha to talk about the friction that exists between attachment and anti-fragililty when raising children. They discuss what it takes to raise confident kids, how to bring up anti-fragile kids, and ways to support your child's sense of agency. Paul and Emily start the conversation by describing what it takes to raise a child correctly. Know that people will criticize and judge your parenting style no matter what you do. For Emily, you are not forever damned if you had a poor childhood. You can still do something to salvage the situation for you and your kids. Emily breaks down the concept of scaffolding your kids and whether it's effective for all types of kids. Paul and Emily agree that parents need to give themselves a break - parenting is complex, and you're doing your very best. According to Paul, to love your kids, you need to also care for yourself. Paul and Emily assess what the research says about caregiver stress and why it's the most predictive component of a child's well-being. Emily dissects attachment theory and the four distinct types of attachments. Paul shares all of us are leaders in that leadership is defined as the ability to influence people. We are leaders as parents trying to mold our children into leaders. Emily and Paul go through the four main types of parenting styles and how they overlap with each other. Paul and Emily discuss the concept of anti-fragility. Both agree that kids need attachment but anti-fragile children's learning can be inhibited by overprotective parents who believe they need to be handled with care. Emily is convinced that parents who see their kids as fragile objects rarely raise confident and courageous kids. It is an error to believe what doesn't kill you makes you weaker. According to Paul, believing that failure and painful experiences will do lasting damage is setting your children up for long-term failure. For Emily, using anti-fragility concepts turns children into confident and courageous persons - but it takes hard work. Paul points to behavior psychologist Jonathan Haidt in the Coddling of the American Mind and the challenges and causes of our children being less resilient to what others think of them. Emily explains why we need to raise kids who can do what is unconventional despite what others think. Paul talks about the consequences of over-intruding in your child's life. According to Paul, safety is important when raising kids, but we have over valued emotional safety and studies have indicated this is resulting in higher levels of stress and depression. Paul and Emily discuss the hierarchy of agency as it relates to raising your kids. Paul and Emily discuss how to teach your children independence and give them the power to actualize their dreams. We now have up to 5 generations in the workplace. Baby boomers, Gen Z, Millennials, you name it. Each generation views the world based on the time frame they moved through history; what were the popular tv shows, what new technology was released, and what was happening worldwide. This creates a 'generation gap' that is not necessarily negative; it is an opportunity to learn. Dr. Tim Elmore joins Kevin to discuss how we can get the most out of each generation vs. putting up with each other. At the end of the day, every generation wants to be led with humility, respect, and curiosity. Key Points Dr. Tim Elmore discusses the factors leading to the personalities of each generation. He shares how we can have the generation conversation without oversimplifying or stereotyping. He talks about managing the tension in each generation. Usually episodes of this show are organized around one big question, but today's guest, Jonathan Haidt, is just too interesting for one clear focus. In this episode, we dig into a ton of fascinating topics, including: why it can make you happier to see your own irrationality and hypocrisy, the value of interacting with ideas you do not like, how to navigate social media sanely, how to get ahead at work (and stay happy in the process), the upside of striving, the wisdom of the Stoics, and more. Jonathan Haidt is a renowned social psychologist from New York University's Stern school of business and the author of many books, including: The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom, The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion, and The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas are Setting Up a Generation for Failure. Since 2018, he's been studying the contributions of social media to the decline of teen mental health and the rise of political dysfunction. One other note: heads up that this conversation includes mentions of self-harm and suicide. In this episode we talk about:Haidt's elephant and rider metaphor that explains how our minds' operateHow to use different techniques from hypnosis to Buddhist and Stoic practices to tame our unconsciousWhy we've evolved to be hypocrites and how admitting our flaws can help us come out aheadBuddhism as a counterpoint to our success oriented cultureThe deleterious effects of social media on democracy and young people's mental health Full Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/jonathan-haidt-567See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Tonight we discuss/debate "The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure" and explore how we can do our part as fathers to make a real difference in society. Website: https://www.thecoddling.com/ This book by Jonathan Haidt and Greg Lukianoff has gained a lot of attention in recent years. The description of the book off the website is as follows: "Something has been going wrong on many college campuses in the last few years. Speakers are shouted down. Students and professors say they are walking on eggshells and are afraid to speak honestly. Rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide are rising. How did this happen? First Amendment expert Greg Lukianoff and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt show how the new problems on campus have their origins in three terrible ideas that have become increasingly woven into American childhood and education: What doesn't kill you makes you weaker; always trust your feelings; and life is a battle between good people and evil people. These three Great Untruths contradict basic psychological principles about well-being and ancient wisdom from many cultures. Embracing these untruths—and the resulting culture of safetyism—interferes with young people's social, emotional, and intellectual development. It makes it harder for them to become autonomous adults who are able to navigate the bumpy road of life. Lukianoff and Haidt investigate the many social trends that have intersected to promote the spread of these untruths. They explore changes in childhood such as the rise of fearful parenting, the decline of unsupervised, child-directed play, and the new world of social media that has engulfed teenagers in the last decade. They examine changes on campus, including the corporatization of universities and the emergence of new ideas about identity and justice. They situate the conflicts on campus within the context of America's rapidly rising political polarization and dysfunction. This is a book for anyone who is confused by what is happening on college campuses today, or has children, or is concerned about the growing inability of Americans to live, work, and cooperate across party lines."

Jonathan Haidt is the author of The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure, The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion and The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom. One of the pioneers of Moral Foundations Theory and a founder of Heterodox Academy, over the last few years Haidt has been focused on the impact of social media on our politics and culture (he is writing two books on the topic). Razib and Haidt begin their discussion with the blockbuster piece in The Atlantic, Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid. They both agree that in many ways the 1990's and 2000's were an information utopia, where the mind-opening possibilities of the internet were being realized. But Haidt lays out the case for social media, and more precisely functionalities like Twitter's “quote-tweet” feature, having degraded online discourse, and driven offline polarization. He also argues that government and tech have to protect children from social media, making a case for enforced age restrictions on access. Razib presses Haidt on his theory about the “moral foundations” that differentiate liberals from conservatives. They discuss the possibility that ideological orientations may have been scrambled by the same processes that drove polarization in society more broadly with social media. Haidt also discusses his resignation from an academic society and the climate of intellectual conformity that is now seeping into every corner of the scholarly world.
Human beings have an innate ability to adapt. Throughout history, mankind has endured famines, war, migrations and periods of tremendous uncertainty. As a nation of immigrants, the United States is built upon the notion that human beings are resilient. On today's podcast we revisit one of our earlier conversations, originally published in July of 2021. An overall discussion on resilience and question whether the recent shift in society has created a lack of coping skills. Step 4 of Banishing Mom Burnout is stop overmomming and use that time and energy to build your life outside of motherhood. One great way to do this is to read. Read... a lot. Reading is a fantastic way to escape/take a break without going anywhere. You can do it while semi-supervising your kids. You can do it while you wait for your kids at activities. Thanks to one of my favorite things, Audible, you can listen to books while mom taxi-ing all over the place. Reading/listening to books is the best! Reading is also one of the best ways to learn new things and continue to grow as a person, which is so important to prevent burnout! Any reading is good, but I personally love reading about self-development (kinda my thing). For today's episode I've selected a few of my recent picks that have helped me with mom burnout. For this week’s episode, I’m joined by NYU psychologist Jonathan Haidt, author of several books, including (with Greg Lukianoff) The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure and The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion. Jonathan is also the co-founder of Heterodox Academy, where I serve on the advisory council. Despite that connection, this is our first extended public conversation. This is not, however, the first time I’ve engaged with Jon. After a talk some years ago, I asked Jon a question during the Q&A session, which I reintroduce here. Heterodox Academy’s mission is very important, but does focusing exclusively on viewpoint diversity prevent us from acknowledging that some viewpoints are more cogent than others? Jon’s recent Atlantic article “Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid” generated a lot of discussion, and he elaborates on his theory of “structural stupidity” here. He claims that, at the national level, the Republican Party’s hostility to moderation has made it structurally stupid and unable to examine its own premises, while left-dominated “epistemic institutions,” like journalism and academia, are mired in their own kind of structural stupidity. I find the structural analysis compelling, but I think it elides the fact that some of the Republicans’ policy position are not, in themselves, stupid at all. Jon is concerned that increasing intolerance on the left, especially on college campuses, may be caused by generational changes in child development. Gen Z is the first generation to have had access to social media as children, and they also had far less unsupervised free play than previous generations. I ask Jon whether this shift can account for groupthink around COVID-induced school shutdowns and drastic changes in attitudes toward trans and racial issues in the US. While the academy no doubt leans left, there is much more viewpoint diversity in economics departments than other areas. Jon has some interesting ideas about why. And finally, I ask Jon whether religion could play a role in increasing viewpoint diversity. It was great to finally connect with Jon. I hope and suspect it won’t be the last time we sit down for one of these conversations. This post is free and available to the public.
