Episode Description: Changing your health habits isn't just about following a new meal plan or committing to a workout routine—it's about breaking old patterns that have been ingrained for years. For women, especially those navigating midlife changes, the process can feel overwhelming, frustrating, and even discouraging at times. The truth is, transforming your health will feel hard before it gets easier. But that doesn't mean it's impossible. If you've ever started a new habit with excitement, only to feel stuck or unmotivated a few weeks later, you're not alone. The key is understanding why this happens and knowing how to push through the discomfort so you can reach the other side—where real change happens. It all starts with the first step and for YiOu Wang that was a search on the internet for how to run a marathon. She set her sights on running the Boston Marathon after spectating what she describes as "the most amazing spectacle of joy and pain and suffering". Her road to Boston included a qualifying race at the Cape Cod Marathon in 2005 followed by the iconic run from Hopkinton to Bolyston Street the following spring. At the time, she never thought she would become a sponsored professional runner but as life's purpose has a way of infiltrating our lives, she now finds herself one of the top ultrarunners in the field. She is a 2-time winner of the Lake Sonoma 50 mile, the 2017 Trail 50Km National Champion and a 2-time Marathon Olympic Trials Qualifier. She is on her way back to Western States this year after earning her golden ticket at the Black Canyon 100k in February. YiOu shares with us what she has learned from her 100-mile experiences and the most important piece to her mental game. We also dive into the lasting impact of a once in a lifetime opportunity that took her and her husband on a 10-month world tour. She opens up about how that trip has changed her perspective and shined a light not only on global issues but those within her own community. YiOu is a fierce competitor yet she always finds things to celebrate even if the result was not what she hoped for. YiOu placed 2nd at this past weekend's Lake Sonoma 50, losing the win by a mere 7-seconds. A sprint to the finish after 50 unrelenting miles is the only way she was going to give up that win. Next up we will see YiOu run the Transvulcania Ultramarathon which is known as the hardest mountain-ultramarathon in the Canary Islands. Word on the street is that she'll be going into this race untapered as a part of her preparation for Western States in June. Thank you so much for listening in and for your support of the show. Sarah Bowen Shea and Amanda Loudin team up to talk to a trio of runners motivated by the Boston Marathon. The guests weren’t inspired to necessarily run Boston, but inspired by it—the size and scope of the marathon or by the tragic 2013 bombings. The first guest is Julia Gibson, a mother runner of three, who vowed she’d never run 26.2—until she “watched that Boston Marathon documentary with tears in my eyes, and I wanted to be a part of something that historical.” Julia offers advice for other BAMRs looking to BQ. Next is repeat-guest Erin Wright, who was so moved by the Boston Marathon bombings, she registered to run her first marathon the very next day! Erin shares how the event colored the 26.2 miles she ran in October 2013 at Twin Cities Marathon. Then YiOu Wang rounds out the conversation, telling how she morphed from a couch potato to a 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials participant (!!) after spectating Boston as a student at MIT. While watching thousands of runners and spectators, she told herself, “This is the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen, and I want to be a part of it!” YiOu describes how she “Couch-to-5K’d” her way to becoming a runner—and she’s now a professional ultramarathon. YiOu gives loads of advice, including tips for stepping up from 26.2 to 50K races, how to stick to a training plan while traveling, and how to nab a stunningly beautiful run-photo for Instagram! In the intro, Sarah and Amanda talk about their kids on the college-admission path, and Sarah shares about encounters with tap-legend Savion Glover. Talk of Boston starts at 13:27. "I think that if you maintain good relationships with people, if you act in a way that is helpful to others, that is kind, that is giving, and you just hold yourself to a high standard, then opportunities will appear before you—and [when they do], just say yes." Super excited to welcome YiOu Wang to the podcast this week! YiOu is the reigning U.S. 50K trail champion, two-time winner of the Lake Sonoma 50, and an Olympic Trials Marathon qualifier with a personal best of 2:38:46, in addition to being an Under Armour and Camlebak-sponsored athlete. Full disclosure: I coach YiOu—we've been working together for the past 2-1/2 years—and this episode marks the first time I've interviewed one of my own athletes for the podcast. We covered a lot of ground in this 90-minute conversation, including YiOu's recent year-long trip around the world—she and her husband were working as teachers—where she visited (and ran in!) numerous countries, experienced many different cultures, and stuck to a training schedule despite being in a new place every few days. We also talked about immigrating to the U.S. as a young child, "almost failing P.E. because I couldn't run the mile," what inspired her to take up running in college, chopping nearly an hour off of her marathon personal best over the course of seven years, transitioning to (and training for) trail and ultra running, where her competitiveness comes from, and much, much more.
