This episode features longtime professional runner, entrepreneur, mother of three, wife, and so much more, Stephanie Bruce. In this episode Bruce, who is 41, shares the purpose and passion that's driving her these days, as she moves into a new chapter in her running career. It's a time of transition and exciting new paths forward. As a professional runner in her early 40s, Bruce shares valuable experience and information about what it looks like to age as a elite athlete, and how she's processing it. She continues to explore what's possible as a professional athlete, and also how she's making that happen–how she's navigating the changes that come with getting older. Bruce has been racing professionally for over 15 years, and in that time she has accomplished so much as a runner, and she's not done yet. Some of her many career achievements include 10th at the New York City and London marathons; 6th at the Chicago Marathon; 12th at the Boston Marathon; 3 national championship titles–once in the half marathon, and two times in the 10k; 6th at the 2020 Olympic Trials Marathon–and the list goes on. But the significance of Bruce's pro career goes way beyond times and places. She's been very open about her running journey and how she's navigating living a full life outside of running, including having her three children–Hudson, Riley and Sophia–while continuing to show up year after year ready to perform at her best. Bruce is known for being a tough, smart, gritty racer and a powerful supporter of teammates, as well as other runners in the field.  Last year, 2024, was a big transition year for Bruce: for the past decade, Bruce was a member of the HOKA Northern Arizona Elite team, also known as NAZ Elite. She learned part-way through 2024 that her contract wouldn't be renewed, and her time with the team would be over at the end of year. In addition, Bruce had her third child, at age 39, in September 2023, which meant that 2024 would be a postpartum return to full time training and racing. This is all to say, 2024 was a tumultuous year for Bruce. And she gets into it all in this episode. She also shares the pivotal experiences in her life that have played a huge part in shaping how she shows up for running and for life. Running has been a steady presence in Vicki Hunter's life since she was an early teen. Running began as a way to find calm through the challenges of youth, and developed into an arena of competitive challenge, on the roads and then the trails. Among her many accomplishments as a competitive runner, Hunter qualified for the 1988 Olympic Trials Marathon. Running also became integral to Hunter's healing journey after a horrific accident, which happened when she was pregnant with her first child. Now 63, Hunter continues to be fueled by competitive running, but her relationship to that pursuit has changed over time. Running pain free is a companion central focus, along with running fast.  Hunter tells her whole story on the podcast: the beautiful moments and terrific difficulties, the growth and the challenges. In 2020, Molly Seidel ran her debut marathon at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Marathon, finished second, and earned a spot on Team USA for the Tokyo Olympics. In 2021, she became an Olympic Bronze Medalist. The next few years included some highs — like running an American course record at the New York City Marathon — and a lot of lows, including injuries and mental health struggles. Last fall, Molly was on the upswing. She ran a personal best at the Chicago Marathon, which felt promising and encouraging heading into the 2024 Olympic Trials Marathon. Then: a shattered kneecap. It's been humbling, but ultimately crucial for progress. **Finding Your 'Why':** As my motivations have shifted, I've discovered that having a clear 'why' is essential for enduring the grind of training. Whether it's overcoming health issues or being a positive role model for my children, identifying your 'why' can be a powerful driving force.  **Balancing Health and Performance:** Through this journey, I've come to understand that prioritizing overall health is paramount. Better health doesn't just lead to improved running performance, but also a more fulfilling life beyond the track. Kelly Bruno: 2024 Boston Marathon Professional Para-Athlete, A Return to Loving the Run

Kelly Bruno has been an athlete since she was a child. Because of a birth defect on her right leg, she went through a below-the-knee amputation, and competes with a prosthetic. Competitive sports has played a fundamental role in her life and her development, and throughout, Bruno has been a role model in the para-athlete world, pushing the limits of what's possible. She's here to tell the story. Throughout her long athletic career, Bruno has excelled in distances from 100 meters to 100 miles, and she competed for years in the sport of triathlon. In her teen years she set world records as a sprinter, has competed in world championships as a triathlete, including the Hawaii Ironman, and this year, she'll race as part of the professional para-athlete field at the Boston Marathon, after running a half-marathon PR of 1:31 in 2023. Very importantly, that half-marathon PR and Bruno's excitement about running Boston have come after a needed hiatus from competitive sports. In the process of going through COVID as well as some major life changes and traumas, Bruno began to rethink her relationship to running over the last several years and stepped away from competition. She returned to structured training and racing last year, 2023, with a fresh, more balanced approach to where the sport fits into her life. In this episode, Bruno tells the whole story. Of the her first memories of being an athlete and what that meant, through her sprinting and triathlon years; her move into ultra trail running and then stepping away from the sport, to now, as she looks forward to racing the Boston Marathon. Adidas professional runner Emily Durgin shares how it all went down at the 2024 USATF Olympic Trials Marathon, which took place February 3, 2024, in Orlando, FL. On the line at this race, in addition to a national championship title, cash awards and series points, racers were vying for a spot on Team USA going to the 2024 Paris Olympics. This was the most anticipated US marathon of the last four years, and the competition was deeper and faster than ever. Marathon racing in the US is on fire, and this event was a terrific demonstration of just that. There were many racers lining up who had a legitimate shot at making the Olympic team, and Emily Durgin was one of them. The goal was simple: finish in the top 3 because those runners are automatic selections for the team; 4th place is the alternate. While Durgin is relatively new to the marathon, she's already had some stellar performances: in the one and only marathon she'd completed before the trials, the 2023 Toronto Waterfront Marathon, she'd clocked a 2:26, which ranked her 16th going into the trials (to note: she had lined up to debut at the 2022 NYC Marathon, but the day did not go her way and she did not finish). Durgin also has a blazing half-marathon PR of 1:07. And, she has a lot of experience with championship racing. Durgin's raced against the US's top competition and put herself on the podium several times. And coming into race day, she was ready: mentally, emotionally, and physically. In fact, an area where Durgin shines is in being able to arrive to the line with rock solid belief herself, which she goes into in this story. Because self-belief, unshakable confidence, it isn't something that just happens. It's the result of years of work. And of course, Durgin shares all the exciting details about the marathon itself, including her final moments before the finish line, which were not at all what she expected. Durgin is a consummate professional and it's cool to hear from an athlete who is so on her game. Just like last year, you can expect a Race Report episode for each race of the USATF Road Circuit series of races. Each episode features one top 10 runner telling the story of how the race went down, from her perspective. And because a race is never just about what happens on race day, you will get to know a little bit more about each one of the runners featured and how this race figures into their larger running story. The USATF Olympic Trials Marathon is a part of the USATF Running Circuit championship series of races. These are races that happen throughout the United States all year long and each race serves as a national championship for the distance or the type of race that is being run. Also, at each one of these races, in addition to vying for a national title, runners earn cash prizes and they earn points. The points go toward the series overall, which is determined at the end of the year. In Spring of 2021, Alex had a breakthrough performance at the first McKirdy Micro Marathon. He ran 2:16:51, destroying his personal best and running a time that would be under the eventual Olympic Trials qualifying standard of 2:18:00. The problem? The standard window hadn't started. Over the next two years he would take multiple shots at the standard and would come up short on the day. After four attempts at it, he would line up for his last shot this past October, less than two months before the window closed. Alex takes us through his journey, going into detail on his mentality, the adjustments he made, and everything that led to his last shot back at Rockland State Park, back to where it all started those few short years ago. We talk about his build, adjusting to altitude, race day, qualifying for the Olympic Trials, and about his preparations for his next race, the Olympic Trials Marathon this February. This year we have highlighted several runners who have logged incredible achievements in longer distance events at a young age. Remember Lauryn Wojcik, who had never raced longer than 6K and yet crushed the Leadville Trail 100? This next performance caught my eye, and the guy is right in my backyard. Boulder-based Charlie Lawrence last month broke the 50-mile world record previously held by veteran ultrarunner and current UTMB champion Jim Walmsley. Charlie is 28, self-coached, and his previous longest run had been 35 miles. He completed the distance in 4:48:21 at the Tunnel Hill 50 Mile in Illinois, averaging 5:46 per mile. I like that Charlie didn't run it on a track or in an artificial environment, but in an actual race, on a mostly gravel surface with some hills. Charlie, a native of Foley, Minn., got the inspiration to challenge the record, which he was actually confident he would secure, from American two-time Olympian Des Linden after helping pace her to a 50K world record. After sitting out most of 2022 with a sacral stress fracture, Charlie left his running group and set out on his own, upped his volume into the 140 miles per week range, and added some beastly track workouts as well. Charlie, who will line up to run the Olympic Trials Marathon this February, feels that the speedwork he does for 26.2 miles definitely helps him at longer distances as well. It's a fun story as Charlie rose from a decent high school runner who took two Minnesota state titles in the 3200 meters, to being a contributing all-Big Ten performer for the University of Minnesota, to being good enough to run in the Olympic Trials marathon in 2020 yet not threaten to make the team, to busting through with a world record at a totally new distance for him. We hit on everything here including his pacing strategy, his fueling, his extraordinary focus, his upcoming goals, and even the stories behind his tattoos. Elite marathon runner Ari Hendrix did not grow up dreaming of running. Up through college, Hendrix's athletic heart was firmly focused on the basketball court. But when professional prospects didn't pan out after her college career ended, Hendrix had to face the harsh fast reality that the sport that had defined her days and shaped her dreams was over.  This is the story of letting go of one dream, and being open to discovering what new, unexpected dreams can arise.  So while Hendrix never considered running a sport of interest when she was young, her father–who died just before Hendrix's senior year of college–thought differently. He was amazed by her sprinting speed. With the enthusiasm of a proud dad, he would say that she could be fast enough to go to the Olympics.   When Hendrix was faced with the loss of her basketball dreams, she decided she needed a focus, a big challenge that would require a big commitment. Remembering her father's vision of her becoming a runner, she decided to give it a go. Hendrix wanted to do the hardest thing she could think of, so she signed up for a marathon.  In this episode, Hendrix traces her journey to running from basketball and how she went from completing that first marathon to now: Ari is currently training for the Olympic Trials Marathon as a sponsored athlete with the Oiselle Underbirds program. To qualify for the trials, runners must have run a 2:37 for the marathon or a 1:12 half marathon. To put this in basic terms: that is extremely difficult.  Hendrix qualified with a 2:35 marathon at the 2022 California International Marathon, more commonly known as CIM. This race is one that many athletes use to run their fastest times.  In addition to earning her spot at the trials, Hendrix is the third fastest runner on The List. (Erika Kemp is current first on The List; she ran 2:33 at the 2023 Boston Marathon). The List is an accounting of all of the American-born Black women who have broken 3 hours in the marathon. Today we are hosted by Dr. Eileen Gallagher who is joined by Vicki Hunter.  Vicki grew up on the East Coast, displaying a competitive spirit from an early age. Tetherball and other sports were not merely sources of enjoyment, but opportunities for her to strive for victory. Throughout her schooling, Vicki engaged in various athletic pursuits, including tennis, basketball, softball, and lacrosse. After completing her education, Vicki sought a competitive outlet and ventured into short-distance triathlons. However, her deepest affinity lay with running, leading her to focus on running races and eventually transitioning to the demanding marathon distance.   In 1985, Vicki's move to Boulder, Colorado for graduate school exposed her to the world of elite running. Fortuitously, she crossed paths with numerous professional runners who graciously mentored her. Until then, Vicki had been oblivious to the existence of the Olympic Trials. Nevertheless, she resolved to qualify for the marathon trials, undeterred by the fact that her best marathon time was 3:50, over an hour slower than the qualifying mark. Through dedication, countless miles, and eighteen months of unwavering commitment, Vicki accomplished her goal in September 1987. At the Twin Cities Marathon, she clocked an impressive time of 2:49:24, securing her spot in the 1988 Olympic Trials Marathon. This qualification was a remarkable feat, but it also initiated a journey of relentless ambition and competitiveness that yielded unforeseen repercussions.   In 1997, Vicki married and became pregnant. Tragically, at fourteen weeks into her pregnancy, she was involved in a single-car accident on September 11.   The accident inflicted severe injuries upon her, including ten broken ribs, a broken sacrum, a broken pubic symphysis, a collapsed lung, a punctured liver, and three skull fractures resulting in a brain injury. The critical first forty-eight hours after the accident determined their survival, and the medical professionals acknowledged that Vicki's physical fitness played a pivotal role. She spent six weeks in the hospital and eventually returned home, albeit confined to a wheelchair. The ensuing five months were dedicated to regaining her strength, driven by the desire to ensure a healthy delivery for her baby. Vicki approached her due date as she would a race, constructing a recovery plan that encompassed endurance and strength training.   On March 12, 1998, Jade was born, precisely on her due date.   Vicki has since devoted her life to discovering the most effective recovery methods, and one of her true passions lies in sharing these insights with as many individuals as possible. She upholds a principle of personal experience, never recommending anything to her clients that she has not undertaken herself.   Vicki holds her Ph.D. in Political Science and is now retired from The University of Colorado where she taught for 23 years. She is a certified Foundation Training Instructor, Level I and II as well as a Certified Lydiard Running Coach, Level II. Race Report: Jeralyn Poe + USATF 10k National Championships

Elite runner and PhD student Jeralyn Poe tells the story of how it all went down from her viewpoint racing in the 2023 USATF 10km National Championships, which took place September 23, 2023, in Northport, NY, at the Great Cow Harbor 10km.  Poe is in a relatively new phase of her racing journey, having finished her collegiate career just a couple years ago. Specifically, over the past two years, she's gone from the collegiate level of racing to the pro/elite field, and she's switched from track racing to racing on the roads. In addition, she's focused on a whole new distance: the marathon. Poe has always preferred longer distance races, and in college, the furthest she could race was the 10k. Now in her post-collegiate life, she's excited to focus on the marathon. To get there, she's gradually been upping her race distances and will debut in the marathon at the 2024 Olympic Trials Marathon, which will take place in Florida, in February. The Olympic Trials is Poe's A goal. This 10k champs then plays into a much bigger picture of Poe's running plans. Poe tells the whole story in this episode. The USATF 10km National Championships is a part of the championship series of races, for various different distances, that happen around the country throughout the year. Racers have a chance to earn a national title, as well as to earn prize money and points based on finishing places; points go toward the overall series placing. The top three places in the series after the 10km champs are Ednah Kurgat, Nell Rojas, and Emma Grace Hurley. All three of these runners have been featured in our Race Report episodes this year. #259 - WE ARE TYLER ANDREWS CLIMBING HIGHER FOR FKTs

In this episode we re-visit with my favorite running nomad, Tyler Andrews, who is rarely stationary, infrequently in the same locale for any length of time. We last chatted on the WASP in episode 129 in May, 2021. I caught up with Tyler in a rare settled-down moment in Albuquerque. Tyler has a penchant for attempting and setting FKTs, fastest-known times, on both well-known and less-popular routes. Some of these include his recent FKT of Kilimanjaro, which most travelers take many days to hike up and down, but which he ran roundtrip in 6:37; Mt. Fuji, which we talk about here; the Everest Base Camp trail on which he became the first to traverse up and down in less than 24 hours; Aconcagua, the tallest peak in South America, on which he covered the 40 miles roundtrip from 14,435 feet to 22,842 feet in 11:24; Cotopaxi and Ojos del Salado, two of the other tallest peaks in South America, as well as several other routes down there; and Peru's 40-mile long, high-altitude Salkantay Inca Trail in 6:13. I met Tyler in during a running/tourist adventure I joined that he led in Peru, where he has done extensive work helping kids. I also got hop into another trip with him in Ecuador where among other challenges I got to run up past 15,000 feet on Cotopaxi and with Ecuadorian national hero Karl Egloff, with whom Tyler regularly trades FKT records, and is also a past WASP alum on episode 193 in March, 2022. Tyler spends a lot of time training at altitude, but he's not a one-trick pony. He attempted an FKT running across Hong Kong, ran the Olympic Trials Marathon in 2020, and set American records for the treadmill half-marathon and 50K. Last year, he obliterated the Leadville Marathon record up and down 13,185' Mosquito Pass by eight minutes in 3:23. And you heard it here first, Tyler will return to the LT100 in August, where last year he placed fourth. Tyler is a founder of the Chaski Endurance Collective, which brings together some of the best ultradistance coaches in the world to help other ultramarathoners design and tailor their training programs to achieve maximum results. Heading into this holiday week we're going to re-run one of my favorite episodes of the podcast from years past. This one is from January 2020 and it's with Fernando Cabada, a former professional distance runner who is still competing at an elite level. In fact, Fernando is now one of the fastest Masters runners in the country, running 2:16:51 at Grandmas Marathon back in June to qualify for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon. He's also the Masters American record-holder for 50K, running 2:57:35 earlier this year.In this conversation, which we recorded in-person in his hometown of Fresno, California, Fernando told me about his rough upbringing in Fresno, where he suffered abuse at the hands of his father, to the close relationship he has with his mother and how that's even strengthened in recent years. We talked about being embarrassed by who he was as a kid and how he's worked to put that behind him later in life. He told me why finishing second in a school yard race as a 9-year-old was the best day of his life to that point. Fernando explains why he was feeling more depressed than ever in 2014 despite it being his best year of racing ever, and how he picked himself up afterward and found a way forward. I do not have a new conversation to share with you this week but I am going to re-run a previous episode of the podcast with Lindsay Flanagan that was recorded in early 2020, just a few weeks before the Olympic Trials Marathon, where she ended up finishing 12th. Since that day in Atlanta, Lindsay has made some huge breakthroughs in the marathon and as a fan, it's been super fun to watch. This past April she was 11th at the Paris Marathon in a personal best 2:26:54, and then, just a few months later in July, she won the Gold Coast Marathon in Australia, breaking the tape in a new course record, and another personal best, 2:24:43.It was fun to revisit this conversation and hear Lindsay's thoughts on the marathon and what she's learned from it over the years, dealing with injuries throughout her career and navigating periods of time when she couldn't run, what she's learned as a coach of age-group athletes, and a lot more.
