This week, George and Amby discuss the recent Boston and London Marathons--always highlights of the spring running season, and this year was no exception. Both George and Amby were in Boston for the marathon, with Amby running and finishing for the 28th time. They didn't jump over the pond to London for that big event (with 53,000 runners), but followed it closely on streaming services and various Internet coverage. Amby described his Boston run that included too-little training and a too-fast start. You'd think a guy would learn at some point. But he did have an ulterior motive. He also noted that his favorite runner in Boston was little-known Mark Bauman, from Michigan, who reached the Boylston St. finish line for the 55th year in a row. That's a world record for Boston ... or anywhere else. George said he and others were surprised that the men's elite field allowed winner Sisay Lemma to build such a huge lead midway. After all, he had run 2:01:48 in Valencia just 5 months earlier.  George also noted that Hellen Obiri has now won 3 major marathons in a row--Boston-New York-Boston--which makes her a definite gold medal threat in the Paris Olympics this summer. The thrilling sprint finish to the women's race in London made George suggest that the Olympic Marathon might be equally  as close. Women's marathon racing has become much more competitive in recent years. Amby took the opportunity to point out that his friend Jeannie Rice set yet another World age-group record (75-79) when she clocked a 3:33:27 in London. Rice has now won an age-group title in all 6 World Marathon Majors. George and Amby also discussed everything from runners' church services in Boston, to Dave McGillivray, Meb Keflezighi, CJ Albertson, and Edna Kiplagat's amazing and still-continuing podium conquests in World Marathon Majors races. Speaking of CJ, he takes us through his marathon journey in Tokyo, highlighting the vibrant diversity of runners touching down in Japan's major marathon race. From sipping sake mid-race to experiencing road Mario Kart events, we explore everything from sushi to ramen and glean valuable advice on pre-race prep when traveling far for a field. But the drama doesn't stop there. Rob drops a Boston training flex in our group chat, downplays it, and gets called out, only for Phil to up the ante with a training race flex. On a lighter note, Rob shares his guilty pleasure of binge-watching TV series with a bag of skinny pop, revealing his love for "Love is Blind." He tries to blame his wife for watching it, but we know it was his choice. We reveal that we will do a live podcast at the Boston Marathon expo Saturday on the main stage at 9:15 am, thanks to the B.A.A. including Lorna, and Adrienne. We'll also discuss Meb Keflezighi's 10th anniversary since his Boston win, and contemplate: what if Meb caught up with you on the course? Would you race or show respect to the legend? In this episode of "Running: State of the Sport," George and Amby chat with Chris Chavez, founder and prime mover-shaker behind Citius Magazine. In just a few years, Citius has become a top media player in coverage of elite track/field and road racing.  While carrying old media nomenclature, ie, "Magazine," Citius is a thoroughly modern digital operation. It includes podcasts, blogs, newsletters, and on-site coverage of major events like the Olympics, World Championships, and U.S. Championships.  Chavez himself races everything from the mile to the marathon, including a 3:17 in last fall's NYC Marathon. But he ranks higher as a writer-reporter, having learned the ropes at Sports Illustrated before founding Citius Magazine. George and Amby were impressed that Chris discussed the business side of Citius as openly as the editorial operation. Also, he explained his passion for attracting more young folks to become fans of running (and even media like himself.) Chris expressed no regrets about how super shoes have affected the sport, and didn't pull punches when naming his top 3 male and female picks for the Marathon Trials on Feb. 3. He's got a sense of humor, too. Chris said one of his Fairy Godmother Wishes for the coming year was to sell Citius Magazine for a price like what the New York Times paid for The Athletic. (Which is thought to be $550 million.) Go for it, Chris! Before the conversation with Chris, George and Amby discussed some of their favorite running podcasts of 2023. Amby's list included: the "Let's Run podcast," "Koop Cast" with coach Jason Koop, and Ali Feller's "Ali on the Run." George noted: Citius Mag's recent podcasts with Parker Valby, Katelyn Tuohy, and CJ Albertson; "Nobody Asked Us" with Kara Goucher and Des Linden; "Set the Pace" with Rob Simmelkjaer and Meb Keflezighi; "The Morning Shakeout" with Mario Fraoli; and "Some Work, All Play" with Megan and David Roche. Over and over again, in my work as a creative entrepreneurship coach, I hear some variation of the question, “but what if it doesn't work?” Fear is a natural part of trying anything new, and for most artists and makers and creatives, focusing on the business side of their creative enterprise is indeed a new thing. Much of what we do as creative entrepreneurs is objectively hard! But if we never try anything new, we'll never get anything new. Taking risks and trying new things is a vital part of what it means to be a thriving artist. And when you are bold enough to take risks, failures will happen. They're unavoidable! The price of success, quite literally, is failure. But if that's true, how can you conquer your fear of failure and allow yourself the freedom to take risks? How can you learn from the failures you experience so you don't get stuck in a failure loop? In this episode, you will learn: How to think about your own personal definition of success, as it relates to your work as an artist and entrepreneur. What mindset shifts can help you let go of your fear around failing. Why it's important to reframe your “failure” experiences and learn from them, rather than regretting them. How to take your failures and turn them into growth experiences that help you succeed in the future. What your community of creative colleagues has to do with how you personally handle both success and failure. In this episode, I share a quote from Fauja Singh, the world's oldest living marathon runner. You can read more about Mr. Singh here. I also discuss passages from the books Madeleine L'Engle Herself: Reflections on a Writing Life by Madeleine L'Engle and 26 Marathons by Meb Keflezighi, and I mention one previous episode of this podcast, 010: What You Need From Your Business. He also proposes that every winner at the World Championships should receive a $1 million first-place prize. In an emotional retelling, he relives his brother's famous win in the 2014 Boston Marathon--the year after the bombings. Before speaking with Merhawi, George and Amby discuss the amazing results at the Chicago Marathon. George notes that Kelvin Kiptum is only 23, and has only run 3 marathons (all in the last year). At Chicago, Kiptum borke the tape in a world record 2:00:35. In both of his last two marathons, he has run the second half in sub 60 minutes. Also Sifan Hassan has incredible range--from a 1:56 in the 800 meters to 2:13 in the marathon. It's hard to predict which events she will run next summer at the Paris Olympics. Amby talks about the age-group results at Chicago, including world records (3:34:32) by 75-year-old Jeannie Rice, and a 2:49:43 by 60-year-old Jenny Hitchings. Gene Dykes set an American record in the 75-79 age group (3:17:01), but fell 10+ minutes short of Ed Whitlock's world record 3:04.53.

Be authentic to yourself and share your narrative. It has so much value. Don't try to fit into a mold that you think is appropriate. Follow your dreams and spread your wings. The effects of such behavior will likely ripple further out than you may expect.  Things get vulnerable when Tommie ties in representation and inclusion in the sport as it relates remaining true to who you are. As members of a marginalized community, it can be easy to shy away from or change who you are in spaces where your culture isn't represented. For Tommie, the pursuit of his passion has changed from chasing PR's to showing up in spaces like this, remaining true to himself and showing others in his community that they too belong.   Wait, did Tommie used to be buff as hell?! 3:13 in the 313, say wha?? Liam, from Hawi Management,  arranged for us to have a few minutes with a very busy Meb Keflezighi to talk about his new book, 26 Marathons: What I Learned About Faith, Identity, Running, and Life from My Marathon Career.  Thank you, Liam!   Meb is such a humble and genuine man.  He has gone through so much adversity and turned it into success.  He knows so much more than how to win, train for, and complete distance races.  He knows the importance of family and community.  He is dedicated to sharing his knowledge, and this latest book is one way he does that.  He supports other runners, no matter their level, and gives back to the sport endlessly.  He even told us about a couple of races he is involved in California that offer anyone a chance to accomplish, explore, and indulge.  I hope we get to do them soon! We thank Meb for the precious time discussing these life lessons from the book and what he has on the horizon this year.  We know from our talk that this book is not just for runners but for anyone looking to be successful in the marathon of life. THAT'S A WRAP Thank you for listening!  We are in our 6th year of the podcast because of all your support!  Don't forget to follow us and tell us where to find you next on our website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.  Also, check out our store on the website and get some swag, thanks to Pure Creative Apparel.  Thanks to www.PodcastMusic.com for providing the music for this episode, too!

When you're thinking about what you want out of your creative work, the ways in which you want to grow your artistic business, how do you figure out your strategy to get there? How do you figure out exactly what your goals should be? What goes into formulating a business strategy that will actually help and guide you, rather than one that will set on a shelf in your office, or languish in an unopened and unreferenced file on your computer? One way to make sure your business strategy is one you're going to actually use is to develop your business goals as SMART goals. This common acronym is a guide for how to write goals that you can actually achieve and that will help you stretch and grow. Let's talk about what it means to be SMART with the business strategy for our creative businesses. In this episode, you will learn: What SMART goals are and how that framework applies to you as a creative entrepreneur. Why it matters whether or not your business strategy is in alignment with your purpose for your creative work. How to find the Goldilocks Zone of goal difficulty, so that you're motivated to work toward the goal without being discouraged by it. What role goals can play in helping you grow within your artistic work How you can use goals to build a creative business that actually works. In this episode, I reference the book 26 Marathons by Meb Keflezighi. In addition, I mention several previous episodes of this podcast: 017: What You Can Control 018: Purpose and Flexibility (Goal Setting for Creatives, Part 1 of 2) I also discuss Starving & Panicked No More: Business Strategy and Text Breakdown for the Thriving Actor, my upcoming in-person workshop in New York City on March 26, 2023. Goals and goal-setting are sometimes really hard for creatives. I work with a lot of artists who struggle to set goals within their creative work. They want the freedom to pursue any project that strikes their fancy, and they're afraid that establishing a formal business plan or writing set of strategic goals within their business will keep them from accepting work they would enjoy. Or sometimes I encounter a creative who has tried goals in the past, only to have those goals languish in a drawer or computer file somewhere – they're not quite sure where – never to be looked at again, and certainly never to be achieved. If you're a creative who has struggled with goals and goal-setting, I hope you're willing to give it one more try. I've got two mindset shifts around goals that I think will make a big difference to how you see the role of goals within your creative business. In this episode, you will learn: Why identifying the purpose that underlies your business goals is essential to actually completing those goals. How crafting a set of strategic business goals can contribute to your life and work as a creative entrepreneur. What flexibility means in terms of your business strategy. How to adjust if you realize you aren't going to be able to achieve one of your business goal. What to do when you realize that your business goals are no longer serving you or your creative business. In this episode, I reference the Merriam-Webster, Dictionary.com, and Wikipedia definitions for the word "goal." I also discuss this episode of the podcast Hidden Brain, and I read a brief excerpt from 26 Marathons by Meb Keflezighi. In addition, I reference several previous episodes of this podcast: 007: Working in your Creative & Financial Sweet Spot (Episode 3 in the 4-Part "Time & Income" Series) 011: Mindset, Strategy, and Action 014: Begin with the End in Mind I also mention Starving & Panicked No More: Business Strategy and Text Breakdown for the Thriving Actor, my upcoming in-person workshop in New York City on March 26, 2023. "It was an astonishing thing. It was one of those defining moments in your life. Everything else was changed from that moment." It was an honor to be invited to the 20th running of the Akron Marathon, Half Marathon, & Team Relay in Ohio this past weekend, and to get to host a live show at the pre-race expo with running legends Meb Keflezighi (Olympic silver medalist and winner of both the New York City Marathon and the Boston Marathon), Kathrine Switzer (the first woman to officially run and finish the Boston Marathon), and Bill Rodgers (four-time winner of both the Boston and New York City Marathons). One quick note: Unfortunately, the first few minutes of the show are missing from the audio recording, so what you'll get here picks up with Meb a few minutes in, answering my question, "Why did you run your first marathon?" The audio skips a few times throughout the recording, but ultimately, you'll still get to hear some inspiring and powerful stuff from Meb, Kathrine, and Bill. He now runs professionally for HOKA and recently graduated from Northern Arizona University, where he was a multiple time All-American. In this conversation, Luis tells his story of coming to the U.S. as a baby, growing up in Fairfield, California, and how getting into running at the age of 14 changed the course of his life. He told me about his experience qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics, navigating the challenges of traveling outside the country as a DACA beneficiary, and what it meant for him to represent not only his home country, but over half a million other Dreamers on the world's biggest stage. We also discussed his relationship with coach Mike Smith, where he he draws his confidence from, and a lot more. This episode is brought to you by:— Recover Athletics. Bolota Asmerom is an Eritrean-American who has called the United States home since the age of 10. The 43-year-old represented his home country of Eritrea in the 5000m at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. In 2004, he finished third in the 5000m at the U.S. Olympic Trials but couldn't go to the Games because he didn't have the Olympic A standard, and in 2008 he finished fourth in the 5000 at the Trials after some last lap contact. All these years later, running is still a huge part of Bolota's life: he still trains and races locally in the Bay Area where lives, he coaches and advises a handful of athletes, and he's also the co-founder and co-owner of Renegade Running, a specialty running shop and community hub in Oakland, California—which is actually where we recorded this episode. In this conversation, which is one of my favorites that I've ever had for the podcast, we talk about opening a retail space during the pandemic, creating an inclusive community, and making running and running apparel more appealing and accessible to minorities and people of color. Bolota shared his earliest memories of immigrating to the U.S., he told me how running came into his life and how his relationship to the sport and activity has evolved over the years, he took me through his ups and downs as an athlete and shared some of his thoughts on the state of the sport, and a lot more.
