In this episode on The Coaching Podcast, we dive into the world of mental performance coach, Lindsey Wilson, also known as The Sports Hypnotist™. Lindsey brings a wealth of experience from her professional basketball career and works with elite athletes, from Olympians to NFL and WNBA players. Lindsey shares insights on "belief work" - a powerful, often-overlooked mindset skill that drives motivation, resilience, and high performance. We explore impactful mental training tools every coach can use to build belief, stay present, and help athletes unlock their potential on and off the field. Let's jump in! 2.07: What do you do on a Monday morning? Consider the 5 D's Decide (if you need to do it) Delegate Deferring it to another time if it's not appropriate now Do it (get the dopamine hit early – take action) Do list (tick it off) 6.24: Time Management: Is it possible to multi-task and actually do a good job? *Research suggests that we are tasking switching when we multi-task but it is unrealistic to not do it! 8.53: How can a coach get their mindset in the right zone to be present and deliver? Bravr Technique: To get your mind in a ‘high vibe' state Breathing in (say your reset word) Releasing (breathing out) X 5 times Affirmation Visualize (one of the most powerful ways to get you there) Reset 13.10: Belief work is one of the most underrated mindset skills – did you believe in yourself as a young basketballer? Belief happens in 4 stages: 1) The belief in a goal that hasn't happened yet (dreaming) 2) The belief that you need that it is going to take much longer to achieve than you expected 3) Believing when there is failure 4) Most importantly: Being able to believe under pressure 15.03: What separates good athletes from really great athletes is the ability to believe! 19.09: What makes a great coach? “Their ability to practice what you preach!” 23.10: Have we gone too far with how we talk to kids or do you think coaches need to be mindful of the language they use to bring out the best in their people? Parenting tip: Validate the emotional experience “When we don't allow the emotions to come out – they play out unresourceful 25.42: What's one of your best mindset tools? Create a reset mistake ritual (this work happens off the court well before game day) 30.18: What disruptive idea will change the way we coach in 2230? We discuss Alyssa Thompson's PhD dissertation from the CP23 School of Finishing, Jaedyn Shaw's absolutely saucy dribble and finish, and Sophia Smith's half volley. We also get into the midfield issues, and why the team currently needs to rely on individual brilliance from attackers. We look at the midfield, which continues to be a weak spot. We talk about what's going wrong, and tactical and/or personnel changes that could help (ahem-LilyYohannes-ahem). Then we pick out players we want to see line up against Argentina. New investment and enthusiasm are pouring into women's sports. In “The Price She Pays: Confronting the Hidden Mental Health Crisis in Women's Sports— from the Schoolyard to the Stadium,” lead authors Dr. Tiffany Brown and Katie Steele call for changes to the athletic hierarchy women compete under. As lead authors, along with co-author Erin Strout, they propose that the expanding popularity and financial clout of women's sports must be commensurate with an athlete-centred mental health approach  The book is a candid guide to all stages of the sporting life, from introductory activities up to U.S. major-college athletics and the pros. It is unsparing of the traumas, but always optimistic, which meshes with 2024's breakouts such as new leagues that are gaining traction, and the WNBA rookie class featuring the likes of Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Kingston, Ont., native Aaliyah Edwards. “The Price She Pays” is both timely, and telling about what fault lines need to be filled in.  Brown and Steele are both licensed marriage and family therapists based in Oregon. Strout, who has written and freelanced for The Chronicle of Higher Education, Runner's World, Women Running, and ESPN-W, is based in Flagstaff, Arizona.  “The Price She Pays” was released by Little, Brown, and Spark on June 18, 2024.

Sarah Spain is a self-proclaimed Feisty advocate for Women's sports. As a lifelong athlete and sports journalist at Fox Sports, ESPN, and ESPNW for several years, she's had to figure out how to succeed in a heavily male-dominated space. Not surprisingly, that has come with difficult moments and plenty of trolls. She's been sexually harassed, she's had to wear sexy outfits with extra cleavage, and she's been patronized and talked down to. She's had to “play the game.”Sarah, fortunately, is also a witness (and an unapologetic advocate) to the massive growth of women's sports thanks, in part, to her work in the media. Sara and Sarah discuss:How her interest in comedy led to her sports journalism career and how she still uses humor to her advantageFinding ways to keep doing her job in the midst of harassment and being treated differently than her male counterparts. Why we need to keep bringing more diverse perspectives and cultures to sports reporting even though much is still run by white malesHow the younger generation and the proliferation of streaming platforms are huge for growth in women's sportsHow we can invest more heavily in women's sports and not simply be "well-intentioned"The positive change of finally seeing women athletes as strong and powerful role models as opposed to just infantile girls or sex objectsWhy pushback and opposition are part of the inevitable growth processThe proof of progress is in the growing numbers and followers; however, a wave of popularity always faces pushback and opposition. Our role is to recognize that the work doesn't stop. As Sarah says, we must be grateful and present in the moment that we've earned and worked for, and still make sure that we're continuing to be proactive.Support our Partners:MOTTIV: Get two months of full premium access with the code FEISTY at mymottiv.com PILLAR Performance: Use the code SARA for 15% off your first purchase at thefeed.com/PILLAR. As Sarah says, we must be grateful and present in the moment that we've earned and worked for, and still make sure that we're continuing to be proactive.https://www.womensperformance.com/the-feist Follow us on Instagram:@feisty_womens_performance Feisty Media Website:https://livefeisty.com/ https://www.womensperformance.com/ Support our Partners:The Amino Co: Shop Feisty's Favorite 100% Science-Backed Amino Acid Supplements. Unsealed court documents revealed that the Secretary of State was aware of the vulnerabilities since at least July 2021. The Department of Homeland Security also investigated the machines and issued a security advisory, urging states to fix the vulnerabilities promptly. However, the Georgia Secretary of State's office announced last month that it would not install the software patch until after the 2024 election cycle. I want you to close your eyes for a moment. Zoom out on your life. Look at it from a birds'-eye view. What do you see? Where are you living with intention and purpose? Where are you living out of alignment? In those places where you're living in your truth, what kind of impact are you making on the people and things around you? In the areas where you're not in alignment, what's the impact there? What you may observe is that where you are living with intention and purpose, you are making a much more meaningful impact on the world around you. And where you're living out of alignment, you may be making smaller waves and/or potentially even a negative impact. Our guest today, Jess Smith, lives on purpose. In every aspect of life. Among many other roles, she is primarily a mom of two, a wife, industry leader in sports and the Head of Revenue for the Angel City Football Club. She is paving the way for what impact can look like at scale in sport. Jess joins us today to share her strategies and stories for how she leads with purpose and prioritizes her time for the greatest impact in all areas of her life. My favorite story, in particular, weaves her entire life's journey together and exemplifies the true ripple effect she is making on the world around her. Melissa Isaacson takes us into old Chicago Stadium, where smoke rose to the ceiling while Michael Jordan soared into history. She recounts chronicling the 1990s dynasty of the Bulls, with its crazy circus, gracious characters, and poignant moments. Hear about her visit to Birmingham, Ala. when Jordan was playing minor league baseball and mourning his father's murder. Oh, and there was that time Phil Jackson walked in on a simulation of childbirth involving a basketball. Melissa also recalls sitting by Princess Diana at Wimbledon, visiting the athletes' Olympic village, and navigating the early days of her career when there were few women working in the sports media.   Isaacson was an award-winning sports journalist for 34 years, including 19 at the Chicago Tribune, where she was the paper's first female beat writer on the Bulls (1991-95) and Bears (1995-2001). She initially covered University of Illinois men's basketball (1990) and later became the Tribune's first female sports columnist and a feature writer before leaving that paper for ESPN in 2009.   Throughout her career, Isaacson received Associated Press Sports Editors awards for beat writing, investigative and feature reporting. She covered the Summer and Winter Olympics, more than a dozen Super Bowls, the NBA Finals, World Series, the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Final Fours, Wimbledon and U.S. Open tennis, the British Open, and college bowl games.
