For the most part, competitive trail running in the US is perceived to bias heavily toward the West Coast, with many of its marquee races and popular training hubs lying left of the Mississippi. This imbalance has stoked a gentle sense of rivalry in trail runners who call the East Coast home, an underdog mentality that many — including this week's guest, New York native and athlete for The North Face, Sarah Keyes — have turned into fuel. Sarah recently punched her ticket to Innsbruck, Austria to represent the US as part of their Long Distance team at this year's World Mountain Championships, a spot she earned with a podium finish at the Lake Sonoma 50 in Northern California. The most exciting time of our week is here: podcast Tuesday! The main training topic was on the trend of increasing carbohydrate intake during activity, sometimes to extreme levels around 120 grams per hour (480 calories!). We review some of the science of how glycogen levels relate to fatigue processes, along with GI considerations and our own personal experiences. Is it the next frontier of fueling, or a passing fad that will cause more DNFs than breakthroughs? The jury is out, but the carbs are in. We also talked about the principles of strides: what they are, how they work, and why they can lead to astronomical progress. There is a speed beast within all of us! And that speed beast may be farting a lot from all those carbs. Plus, we did something extra special with this episode and answered lots of listener questions! Our podcast audience is so smart, so kind, so awesome. Topics: pre-race nerves, the Lake Sonoma 50 Miler, the physiology of celebrating yourself, the Paris Roubaix bike race, on-course nutrition, cross training doubles, how to approach injuries during training, and considerations for hormonal tracking. There were tons of deep dives into the coolest concepts! And as usual, there were some extra shallow dives as well. Remember: Overnight success stories are years in the making. Let's make those years full of celebration! And sweet dance moves! But you gotta keep the glycogen high in the hips to avoid booty cramps. Dakota is a professional ultrarunner, with wins at notable races like Transvulcania, Pikes Peak Marathon, San Juan Solstice 50 Miler, Broken Arrow Skyrace and the Lake Sonoma 50 to name a few. He's also placed 2nd at the Hardrock 100 and will be returning in 2022. While his results are impressive, so is his commitment to using his platform to spur positive environmental change. Dakota started the Footprints Running Camp to develop leaders in climate action and is partnering with organizations like Protect Our Winters and the Kilian Journet Foundation to do just that. Dakota and I discuss his career as a professional runner, his passion for environmental advocacy, his current path to become a mechanical engineer and much more.

Mercedes Siegle-Gaither surprised many people at Lake Sonoma 50-miler. Many people except me. I've had the pleasure of coaching Mercedes and have seen her progress up to her race at Lake Sonoma! I couldn't wait to see how she did. It was amazing, and I can't wait to share her story. My apologies for the technical difficulties once again. I've canceled that recording platform and switched to a more stable platform.   If you'd like to follow Mercedes, you can do so on Instagram @sciencecedes   As for the Race Report we spoke about: Debrief Race Name: Date: Distance: Elevation Gain/Loss (if applicable): Finishing Time: Finishing Place: Overall, how did you feel about the race? How did you feel about up/down hills? How did you feel on the flats? How did you feel on the technical sections (if there were any)? Give me a breakdown of your nutrition & hydration plan going into the race, and what actually happened. What would you do differently in the future in regards to nutrition & hydration? How did you feel about your gear choices (pack/handheld, shoes, apparel, socks, etc.)? What things do we need to work on going forward?
