Send us Fan MailA championship race can mess with your head before it ever tests your legs. We're back with Mason Cobi on the eve of the US Mountain Running Championships at Mount Sunapee, and we get real about the early season weirdness: stacked fields, unknown fitness, and the uncomfortable shift from “underdog” to “the guy people watch” on the start line. Mason breaks down how he thinks about pressure, why being keyed off can be a disadvantage, and how he's learning to race from a more established position without abandoning what made him dangerous in the first place. From there we go deep on mountain running tactics for a two loop course. We talk aggressive starters, when to let someone go, and how a simple pacing cap and a quick systems check can keep you from redlining early. Mason shares what he learned last year about respecting competitors, choosing the right moment to move, and why improved downhill running can completely change your options on race day. If you love short trail racing, this is the kind of practical strategy talk you can steal immediately. Then the conversation takes a turn to road speed and controlled chaos with the full Boston Marathon story. Mason shows up planning a victory lap after Gorge, decides to race anyway, and surprises himself with an OTQ and a huge PR. We also get into the experimentation side of endurance performance: super shoes, trail shoe choices for mud versus dry conditions, and the pros and cons of testing supplements like sodium bicarbonate and Nomeo, along with a clear warning about what not to try on your A race. If you're training for a mountain race, a marathon, or both, hit play and come race-nerd with us. Subscribe, share this with a friend who loves tactics, and leave a review. "All I can do is move forward knowing that one day I'll have that moment." Jess McClain just might be the most-loved professional marathoner in the country. The Phoenix, AZ-based Brooks athlete made national headlines last month when she was leading the U.S. Half Marathon National Championships in Atlanta and was led off course by an official vehicle in the final mile of the race. That day, Jess lost out on a national title, a spot on Team USA, and a good amount of prize money. (Listen to Emma Grace Hurley's recap of the day here.) She handled the aftermath with grace, compassion, and optimism. In this conversation, Jess talks about the race, and about the moment she realized she'd been led off course and was no longer in the lead. She also talks about the just-announced resolution (she has a spot on Team USA, and will be competing at World Championships in Copenhagen later this year) and how she feels about it. Jess, who is coached by David Roche, talks about how she's feeling heading back to the Boston Marathon, where she ran a personal best (2:22:43) last year and was the top American woman in the race. Plus, reflections on egg freezing, being a pacer at The Marathon Project in December, and how Jess is feeling after this weekend's Sound Running 10K. FOLLOW JESS @jesstonn SPONSOR: New Balance. Luke and Matt kick off with some light banter before Luke's travel day into Japan for the Osaka Marathon - a small delay, a tight connection, business class, melatonin sleep, and ANA staff going above and beyond to get them through. That opens a broader chat on Japan's world-class service, its strict rule-following culture, and why Japan feels "cheap" right now with the yen and day-to-day costs. The episode then pivots to Jake Barraclough's "Ran To Japan" video and his blunt take on doping in pro running - how hard it is for major names to get caught, the risks for whistleblowers, and how brand protection, TUEs, and enforcement can shape what the public does (and doesn't) see. Luke and Matt keep the language careful while still digging into the bigger system-level questions. On the racing side, Luke and Matt talk about Truett Hanes' Austin Marathon hype - and the contrast with the women's winner Kellen Taylor running a women's OTQ-level performance that didn't get the same attention. They also recap Barcelona Half - Hugo Fry's standout 1:03:35, plus Ben is Running and Victor Smang's results and what it suggests for Ben's Rotterdam sub-2:20 plan. They close with a broader YouTube chat - raw vlog energy vs cinematic edits - and a few hints at Matt ramping back into regular uploads alongside coaching. We have a brand new show joining the Sandy Boy Productions podcast network, and I am so excited about it! It's called Out and Back, hosted by professional runners Rory Linkletter and Jacob Thomson. They train in Flagstaff, they are chasing big goals on the roads, and they bring you straight into the behind the scenes of the marathon lifestyle. This show is training talk with a few detours, and it is exactly the kind of perspective I love adding to the network. What I love about Rory and Jacob is how curious they are. They are not here for surface level conversations. They want the real details. The stuff you actually want to know if you care about performance, training, racing, and the mental side of showing up when it matters. If you are someone chasing a BQ, an OTQ, or you just want to understand how the pros think about the marathon, you are going to love this podcast. In this intro episode, I sit down with Rory and Jacob to talk about why they started Out and Back, what they want the show to be, and why they think there has been a gap in marathon specific podcasting. We also get into what it looks like to promote yourself as a professional runner, how they balance training with content, and what success looks like for both of them as they head toward Boston. I cannot wait for you to hear more from these two, and I am really proud to welcome Out and Back to the Sandy Boy Productions family. Please take one minute right now, go hit subscribe wherever you listen, and then send this to a friend who loves marathon training talk.
We cornered the market on mozzarella sticks before this awesome episode! The main topic involved our recommendations for electrolyte use in races and hard training. Sweat replacement is one of the strangest, least understood parts of athletic physiology. We give our guidelines from lots of real-world experimentation. And this one was full of incredible topics! Other topics: the happiest place on Earth, Megan's first video filming and the year of vulnerability, David's return to run, a new probiotic study showing the weird connection between the gut and brain, Kristian Blummenfelt measuring with the highest VO2 max ever (or did he?), Airpod 3 heart rate, gambling in running, Truett Hanes' OTQ chase, our updated thoughts on applying AI in training, a Nomio follow-up, the perils of setting Z2 in the wrong place, changing directions on the track, elliptical v. bike training, bike cadence, a deep question on parenting, and lots more!Whenever you're in doubt about our place in the Universe, look up at the night sky, take a deep breath, and give the universal signal: SUCK IT. "That really was the biggest thing during my marathon build is like, wow. Reminding myself to get back into those [fueling] habits, but also remembering I shouldn't need to train for a marathon to have these healthy habits," shares Melissa Berry, a former D1 Cross Country and Track runner for the University of Oregon. Berry ran her debut marathon at CIM 2025, in 2:35:57, getting her first OTQ in the marathon. Berry grew up in Eugene OR and was excited to find herself at her hometown university as a collegiate athlete. She fueled well in highschool and saw big improvements, but struggled through injuries, inadequate fueling, and comparison to other athletes in college. It wasn't until Coach Shalane Flanagan joined the program, in Berry's penultimate season, that things started to turn around. Berry shares her story with Lane 9, including how she joined the Tracksmith Stamata team to go for a marathon OTQ, thinking it would take a few years. But actually, it just took one try! Stay for the race recap and fueling lessons learned.
The Free Outside Show is back for the new year, and I'm joined by our correspondent on everything, Allison Mercer. We're doing the exact opposite of the usual “five months from now” preview content that other podcasts are doing, and instead talking about what's actually happening this weekend: Bandera (with Molly Seidel), Houston Marathon for the OTQ watch, and why you should care about World Cross Country in Tallahassee (yes, it's watchable on Peacock, yes, team tactics make it way more fun than you think, and yes, there are statue alligators on the course). From there, we get into the real chaos: Burrito League expansion, why it works as an “anyone can play” running challenge, and how these community-wide games can be more accessible than the typical big-race ecosystem. Then we go full rant mode on year-end lists, award season fatigue, media bias, and why FKT stories often get misunderstood or flattened by outlets that do not actually live in that world. We also touch on sponsorship transparency, influencer economics, West Coast bias, and why the sport would be better off funding real coverage of barrier-breaking performances instead of paying for interchangeable promo codes. This isn't the final episode of 2025 for Des and Kara, but this is the last episode of the year with a long list of running results to discuss. Listen in because there was A LOT of running action this past weekend from XC to the indoor track to the marathon. Des and Kara start with updates on their recent travels - Des to Shanghai and Seoul, Kara to snowy Wisconsin. As highlights, we learn Des's nickname in China and get an update on Colt's race at Brooks XC regionals in proper blizzard conditions. Then, they turn to this past weekend's results, starting with Nike NXN and the US XC Champs in Portland. Who showed up and showed out to earn spots on the World XC team for the US? Plus, holy Hedengren(!) as Jane H ran 14:44 to break the collegiate indoor and outdoor 5K record at BU. That's also the 2nd fastest time ever by an American indoors. She is only 19, but it seems like she is making it look too easy! The sky is the limit for her. Finally, they drill in on the US Marathon Champs at CIM (including Courtney D's near OTQ) and some fast times at the Valencia Marathon in Spain as the fall marathon season finally wraps up. Karen and Megan reunite for the first time since mile 24 of the Indianapolis Marathon for an overdue recap of Megan's 2:41, four minute personal best. While it's hard to be disappointed, she's hungry for more and has an exciting new brand backing her OTQ chase. In other news, friend of the pod Molly Seidel was in town and witnessed Karen's unfortunate struggle of moving a couch into her apartment. Karen shares her plans to join Molly in an upcoming stint in Flagstaff and get into the parody documentary industry. We also spitball some ideas for marathon expos (imagine having a hair braiding station!) and discuss the controversial topic of wearing watches to formal events. This week's Chick Chat prompts an important discussion: when do you retire your running shoes? Are 200's the new 100s? Reese and Taylor talk about the growing trend of going farther. Why is it a thing? We're still perplexed, and curious, about the challenge. Guest:Taylor catches Parley Hannan, Hylo Athletics' first signed athlete, fresh off the plane. They discuss her running trajectory from not even running until college to setting NCAA records to OTQ's and The Speed Project. They also chat her recent DNF at the Mammoth 200 and the reality that mental health plays a major role in our lives as people and runners.

This week, I'm joined by runner, mom, and Olympic Trials hopeful Annie Kay for a powerful conversation about how her relationship with running has evolved through motherhood, eating disorder recovery, and chasing big goals. Annie opens up about her experience with eating disorder recovery, how she navigated postpartum training while breastfeeding, and what it really looks like to juggle elite running ambitions with life as a new mom. Whether you're building back post-baby or just trying to find joy in the run again, this episode is full of real talk, inspiration, and tangible takeaways.
Dirt Division leader Taylor, and longtime BITR contributor, Alex, sit down with Adidas Terrex athlete, Dani Moreno. Dani comes by way of Mammoth Lakes, California but grew up in LA where life was much different. They talk about Dani's history with sport, her adventurous hiatus from running, and her aspirations as she comes back from injury which includes trail racing at the highest level of our sport and that hard fought OTQ.Follow Dani on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dan_yell_a/
This episode was such a fun mix of science, emotions, and hot tubs that could cook a turkey! We started with some thoughts on Western States, less than 3 weeks out from the race. Does embracing the stage also mean embracing social media posts telling you that you aren't being picked to perform well? Our argument channeling Tyrese Halliburton of the Indiana Pacers: the “noise” can be performance enhancing if you have fun with it!The main science topic was a WILD study on the hot tub improving hemoglobin levels, resting heart rate, and altitude performance. It's “wild” because the hot tub was set astonishingly high, with participants staying in for an astonishingly long time. I like my participants like I like my eggs: hard-boiled. We talk about what it means and why passive heat training might be the easiest advanced training intervention that goes beyond the basics. And this one was full of our favorite topics! Other topics: a training trip out to the Western States course, Kilian Jornet searching for a pacer, Cam Jones consuming 185 grams of carbs per hour on his way to winning Unbound Gravel, Jessie Diggins' amazing poem on fueling her body to take a hit, a study on ketones and altitude that found no benefits, using downhills to improve strength for flat running, and a genetic link between muscle stiffness and strains, plus a Q+A on the new OTQ standards getting faster for men (we don't like it), whether to GO FOR IT if going for it might not lead to your big goals, a hypothetical about gold medalist Kristian Blummenfelt at a mountain race, and heat and family planning. The episode finishes up with questions about alcohol and celebrity-flavored bathwater. It'll make sense soon. Maybe. We love you all! In S5Ep6 of the PRP, Adam goes to stoke city with electric long distance runner, heart-first honcho of hype, belief bolstering coaching phenom and the undisputed master of the mid-run monologue Chris Sadler, who has been preparing for the Bayshore Marathon on Saturday May 24th, 2025. Kendra Nylen, certified strength queen, dignified Gilmore Girls scholar and Chris's proud fiancee joins the show to offer her take on all things banana accoutrements, Spartan spirit and of course, what it takes to keep up with a household full of Sadlers. The trio wades deep into the rhythm of the long run—where love lingers, legacy builds, fingers freeze and weekend miles turn into moving pictures with dope music & motivation. Chris reflects on his coaching journey and shares insight about how this experience has added unmeasurable depth and direction to his own running story. With a mentoring ethos built on joy, character, and contagious hype, tap in to learn how Sadler's Saddles are empowering one another as teammates through athlete spotlights, cold weather grind reels and a relentless commitment to showing up for each other with authenticity and pulse you can feel through the pavement.Things get vulnerable when Sadler ruminates about the return to his marathon roots, the deeply meaningful value of having Kendra by his side, and the full-circle feels of racing Bayshore again with new goals, ALL the homies and fresh perspective. From sharing your stoke to protecting your peace, Chris reminds us that the true measure of a running journey isn't found in finish lines or stats—it's in the belief you help spark in others as they chase their own unhinged dreams in the vast world of running. Who are the OTQ boys & how is the Life in Stride Podcast dishing out so much heat?! Did Bailey the 17 year old labroador just get a bark-out?! Stewards of stoke?! John Wooden drops in from the ethosphere?? Yooo, where the photographer at? Power train control modules? Expedited bromancing?? Bouje drizzlin? "They just want a chance to compete." Yesterday, after much anticipation and speculation, USA Track & Field announced the changes to the qualifying times for the 2028 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. So, what's it going to take to OTQ leading up to LA 2028, and to get to run at the Trials? For women, the qualifying mark stays the same: 2:37:00. On the men's side, things are getting faster: Men will now need to run 2:16:00 to qualify — a full two minutes faster than the qualifying time for the 2024 Trials. In this episode, USATF's Chairs of the Long Distance Running Committee — Kim Conley and Conor Nickel — join the show to explain what what into making these decisions, and what they mean for athletes and fans alike. 271. Did you peak with running already or is it a plateau? Have you ever heard the quote “what would you attempt to do if you knew you would not fail?” that is a good one for todays podcast episode. A lot of people would love to look into a crystal ball and see what their full potential is if they gave running their all. Many people allow fear of failure to hold them back from giving 100% commitment/effort into The truth is that most people quit before they reach their full potential OR they stop putting in the same effort. It's important to recognize that there is more to life than running so of course many people have other goals they want to pursue, but it's important what language we use when we talk about our potential in the sport. I often hear people say they think they already reached their full potential within the sport after a few years. Did you really reach your full potential in the sport or are you stuck at a plateau? How do you know if it's a peak or a plateau How long have you been training Have you changed your training within the past 2-3 years Have you focused on various events in running Have you been coached Peaking: How can you continue to motivate yourself to be in endurance events if you already reached your peak? What if you didn't reach your true potential but you don't want to continue to train at that high of a level? Plateau How can you breakthrough How long would it take to breakthrough What does it really take to achieve some of those big goals like OTQ or BQ Do you actually have the desire to put in that much work? Sacrifices in place Athletes give us their races vs us recommending races

This week we are sharing our conversation with
We are so thrilled to introduce Alexandra (Ali) Niles, a masters runner who will be toeing the line in the Professional Women's Field at the 2024 Boston Marathon. Ali, a former competitive college gymnast who is now a gymnastics coach, started running in her 20's after college. Ali quickly fell in love with running and hired coach Tom Fleming, a legendary runner who won the 1973 and 1975 NYC Marathon and placed second in the 1973 and 1974 Boston Marathon. Tom helped Ali break three hours and set a goal to qualify for the Olympic Marathon Trials. Sadly, in 2017, Tom died of a heart attack. Devastated, Ali continued chasing the OTQ and in 2018, with the encouragement of her friend, Sika Henry, Ali achieved her goal at the One City Marathon and ran the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials. This year, Ali will be running in the Boston Marathon Professional Field for the first time (her third Boston Marathon) and couldn't be more excited to run in the field as a masters runner. We loved hearing Ali's story and look forward to seeing her crush Boston on Marathon Monday. You can find us on Instagram and Facebook @runfartherandfaster. Looking for coaching? What. A. Weekend!!! We couldn't talk about it all, but we certainly tried to! From Fiona O'Keeffe's historic performance, to the paradox of the fastest times ever combined with only 41 runners in each race going sub-OTQ pace, the person we felt most gutted for, to Bromka nearly getting arrested... there's a lot here. In today's episode, we're bringing you a story from an incredible athlete who spent years of training to accomplish his goal of competing at the olympic marathon trials by running an OTQ time - and ultimately fell just short of that goal during his most recent attempt. This athlete happens to also be one of our own coaches here at RunnersConnect and his name is Ruairi Moynihan. Ruairi came so close to hitting the 2:18 standard back in 2022, running an impressive 2:21 marathon while training mostly for trail and ultra race distances. Most recently though, under the guidance of his coach - and former RunnersConnect coach - Dylan Belles, the two crafted more focused plan to chase the OTQ standard at the 2023 CIM marathon in December. We brought Ruairi and Dylan on the show to recap how they approached training and then get their thoughts on what runners can do to learn from races that don't go exactly as planned. Ruairi is an absolutely inspiring athlete who shares an honest story of failing to hit your dream goal that will be relatable to just about anyone listening. During this interview we discuss some lighthearted and more serious topics including: Why the olympic trials was an important goal for Ruairi and how it felt falling short of this objective Why Ruairi and Dylan were confident an OTQ time was achievable based on the previous training block Why the camaraderie between Ruairi and Dylan makes them an even better team And what went wrong on race day including thoughts on how runners can bounce back from a disappointing performance Connect, Comment, Community Follow RunnersConnect on Instagram Join the Elite Treatment where you get first dibs on everything RTTT each month! "I don't think previous results really can predict future returns." Josh Kalapos crossed the Berlin Marathon finsih line and his watch showed 2:18:01. He had to go find someone for the officials results before he saw it: 2:18:00. Right at the Olympic Trials qualification mark. This makes Josh the last man in. Josh experienced the highs and lows in college. One of his best moments was winning the UAA Indoor 5k. The low was ending his senior track season on a broken tibula. When he moved to Boston to work at Amazon Robotics after graduation, his friends randomly ran a marathon. This sparked Josh's marathon journey. He jumped into a half marathon and ran 66 minutes which gave him the confidence to go after the OTQ. He's been training with the BAA and believes there is more in the tank than his 2:18 shows. Josh has the confidence to take big swings and is excited to see what he can do. How to Support D3 Glory Days: Winter Hats Steady State Nutrition D3 Glory Days Venmo. We launched a Patreon! In one of the most inspiring running stories of the year, Tammy Hsieh ran 2:37:00 at CIM and hit the OTQ standard on the number to qualify for the US Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando, FL on Feb 3, 2024! When Tammy turned the final corner, the finish line clock read 2:36:50 and she kicked for home with everything she had left and crossed the line at 2:37:03. There were a few uncertain moments before friends showed Tammy her chip time and someone from the CIM team draped her with the coveted OTQ banner so she could celebrate her huge accomplishment. Tammy became the 173rd woman to earn her spot in this year's race. She has been on quite a tear over the past two years—just look at her amazing progression: 2:48 - CIM 2021 2:45 - Indy 2022 2:37:44 - Ottawa 5/28/2023 2:37:00 - CIM 12/8/2023 We covered: -Coaching & her training approach with Kim Conley -Her Ottawa build vs CIM—her 1st time logging 100M weeks -Her start in NYC training with Central Park Track Club -Moving to Boston & training with the Boston Hares -Her drive/passion/fire—where it comes from -Mindset, mantras, & self-talk on the course -Her plan for Orlando -Community service There are so many great nuggets to unpack in this one and I'm stoked to keep following Tammy's inspiring journey! "It's not easy to talk about the disappointments. It's not easy to talk about the times that you fall short. Nobody wants to brag about those. It's been hard. There were lots of tears shed in private. And just really accepting the fact that I wanted something so badly, and it didn't happen." Emilee Risteen has raced six marathons in the past 12 months, each in pursuit of one very specific goal. For the past year, Emilee has been trying to qualify for the Olympic Marathon Trials, which would mean running 26.2 miles in 2:37 or faster. She ran CIM in 2:43, Houston in 2:48, Boston in 2:41, Grandma's in 2:38 (a personal best and so close to that 2:37!), the McKirdy Micro in 2:41, and CIM one more time in 2:44. In this conversation, Emilee — who ran her first marathon in 4:03 and has taken nearly 90 minutes off her time in less than three years — talks about chasing her big goals, and about what happens when you don't quite get there. Plus, she talks about how going for sub-2:37 was initially about the time and the OTQ, but ultimately became about so much more. If if it feels like we're doing a Meg race recap every other month, it's because we are. Her sixth marathon of 2023 was a final Hail Mary at an OTQ, and though it came up short, she finished with a sub-2:37 in our hearts. “My mentality that day was, I wanted to improve my tombstone.” The Olympic Marathon Trials is February 3rd and we plan to tell tales of D3 grads that hit will be in Orlando. Today, we bring you the story of Dan Vassallo. Dan qualified for his third Olympic Trials at the McKirdy Micro Marathon in October. Vassallo's longevity in the sport is something to be studied. He graduated from Colby in 2007 and immediately jumped into the Marathon. He didn't run his first OTQ until 2014 when he won the Philly Marathon in 2:17:28 In 2023, his OTQ time was 2:17:39 The biggest day of his running career came on Marathon Monday in 2018. With the wind howling and the rain crashing down, Vassallo finished 10th overall at the Boston Marathon. Being from the Boston area, this was everything he wanted. He'll go deeper into the race but something he will always remember. This is a great D3 journeyman story of continuing to keep the dream alive and realizing it's worth to still get after it. Last weekend I had the immense privilege of watching nearly 40 athletes earn an OTQ marathon time at the McKirdy Micro Marathon. One of those athletes was Alex Burks. In one of the most insightful and powerful conversations we've ever had on this this, Alex describes the last four years in which he persevered through challenges, worked is butt off, fell short many times, and eventually earned his lofty goal of qualifying for the Olympic Trials. Below is the text from an Instagram post that Alex wrote after the experience that touches on the emotions of the day: "2:17:13 I don't know if there's an adequate way to put into words what today feels like and means to me. As I'm sure you all know by now I've taken several attempts at qualifying for the Olympic Trials, and have failed each time. [The day before the race], I woke up with a tight chest and fever. My 4 mile shakeout at 7:20 pace felt miserable. I called up my coach and we talked about other race options, but after that conversation was over, it was all business with still making the most out of race day. I've grown so accustomed to disappointment. I've considered giving up and throwing in the towel too many times in the past year and a half. However, and I genuinely don't think I can express this enough, I am beyond blessed to have SO MANY people in my life that continue to believe in me, support me, and give me the strength to carry on. [Raceday] was a test of belief in myself. I had the fitness to run an OTQ, I just needed to keep calm, and not let what was in between the ears be my downfall. And it wasn't. I don't think I changed pace by more than 2-3 seconds for every lap of the course. Even the last 3 miles I didn't even consider speeding up. "Just don't slow down, stay calm and patient". Then I crossed the line. Every time I failed, every time I felt not good enough, every time I considered giving up, it all washed away - and I cried. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I love and appreciate you all. You make this worth it. You make this mean something. Never give up on that dream, ever." You can follow Alex at www.instagram.com/alexander.burks.
