"They just want a chance to compete." Yesterday, after much anticipation and speculation, USA Track & Field announced the changes to the qualifying times for the 2028 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. So, what's it going to take to OTQ leading up to LA 2028, and to get to run at the Trials? For women, the qualifying mark stays the same: 2:37:00. On the men's side, things are getting faster: Men will now need to run 2:16:00 to qualify — a full two minutes faster than the qualifying time for the 2024 Trials. In this episode, USATF's Chairs of the Long Distance Running Committee — Kim Conley and Conor Nickel — join the show to explain what what into making these decisions, and what they mean for athletes and fans alike. 271. Did you peak with running already or is it a plateau? Have you ever heard the quote “what would you attempt to do if you knew you would not fail?” that is a good one for todays podcast episode. A lot of people would love to look into a crystal ball and see what their full potential is if they gave running their all. Many people allow fear of failure to hold them back from giving 100% commitment/effort into The truth is that most people quit before they reach their full potential OR they stop putting in the same effort. It's important to recognize that there is more to life than running so of course many people have other goals they want to pursue, but it's important what language we use when we talk about our potential in the sport. I often hear people say they think they already reached their full potential within the sport after a few years. Did you really reach your full potential in the sport or are you stuck at a plateau? How do you know if it's a peak or a plateau How long have you been training Have you changed your training within the past 2-3 years Have you focused on various events in running Have you been coached Peaking: How can you continue to motivate yourself to be in endurance events if you already reached your peak? What if you didn't reach your true potential but you don't want to continue to train at that high of a level? Plateau How can you breakthrough How long would it take to breakthrough What does it really take to achieve some of those big goals like OTQ or BQ Do you actually have the desire to put in that much work? Sacrifices in place Athletes give us their races vs us recommending races
We're on the road to CIM! Magic Max Hoffman, a man with long-term OTQ aspirations, joins the show, as he and Travis prep for California International Marathon. This week we are sharing our conversation with
We are so thrilled to introduce Alexandra (Ali) Niles, a masters runner who will be toeing the line in the Professional Women's Field at the 2024 Boston Marathon. Ali, a former competitive college gymnast who is now a gymnastics coach, started running in her 20's after college. Ali quickly fell in love with running and hired coach Tom Fleming, a legendary runner who won the 1973 and 1975 NYC Marathon and placed second in the 1973 and 1974 Boston Marathon. Tom helped Ali break three hours and set a goal to qualify for the Olympic Marathon Trials. Sadly, in 2017, Tom died of a heart attack. Devastated, Ali continued chasing the OTQ and in 2018, with the encouragement of her friend, Sika Henry, Ali achieved her goal at the One City Marathon and ran the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials. This year, Ali will be running in the Boston Marathon Professional Field for the first time (her third Boston Marathon) and couldn't be more excited to run in the field as a masters runner. We loved hearing Ali's story and look forward to seeing her crush Boston on Marathon Monday. You can find us on Instagram and Facebook @runfartherandfaster. Looking for coaching? What. A. Weekend!!! We couldn't talk about it all, but we certainly tried to! From Fiona O'Keeffe's historic performance, to the paradox of the fastest times ever combined with only 41 runners in each race going sub-OTQ pace, the person we felt most gutted for, to Bromka nearly getting arrested... there's a lot here. The episode features Tommie Runz, Peter Bromka, Marcus Brown, Lindsey Hein, and Matt Chittim Also, shout-out to Lagoon! In today's episode, we're bringing you a story from an incredible athlete who spent years of training to accomplish his goal of competing at the olympic marathon trials by running an OTQ time - and ultimately fell just short of that goal during his most recent attempt. This athlete happens to also be one of our own coaches here at RunnersConnect and his name is Ruairi Moynihan. Ruairi came so close to hitting the 2:18 standard back in 2022, running an impressive 2:21 marathon while training mostly for trail and ultra race distances. Most recently though, under the guidance of his coach - and former RunnersConnect coach - Dylan Belles, the two crafted more focused plan to chase the OTQ standard at the 2023 CIM marathon in December. We brought Ruairi and Dylan on the show to recap how they approached training and then get their thoughts on what runners can do to learn from races that don't go exactly as planned. Ruairi is an absolutely inspiring athlete who shares an honest story of failing to hit your dream goal that will be relatable to just about anyone listening. During this interview we discuss some lighthearted and more serious topics including: Why the olympic trials was an important goal for Ruairi and how it felt falling short of this objective Why Ruairi and Dylan were confident an OTQ time was achievable based on the previous training block Why the camaraderie between Ruairi and Dylan makes them an even better team And what went wrong on race day including thoughts on how runners can bounce back from a disappointing performance Connect, Comment, Community Follow RunnersConnect on Instagram Join the Elite Treatment where you get first dibs on everything RTTT each month! "I don't think previous results really can predict future returns." Josh Kalapos crossed the Berlin Marathon finsih line and his watch showed 2:18:01. He had to go find someone for the officials results before he saw it: 2:18:00. Right at the Olympic Trials qualification mark. This makes Josh the last man in. Josh experienced the highs and lows in college. One of his best moments was winning the UAA Indoor 5k. The low was ending his senior track season on a broken tibula. When he moved to Boston to work at Amazon Robotics after graduation, his friends randomly ran a marathon. This sparked Josh's marathon journey. He jumped into a half marathon and ran 66 minutes which gave him the confidence to go after the OTQ. He's been training with the BAA and believes there is more in the tank than his 2:18 shows. Josh has the confidence to take big swings and is excited to see what he can do. How to Support D3 Glory Days: Winter Hats Steady State Nutrition D3 Glory Days Venmo. We launched a Patreon! In one of the most inspiring running stories of the year, Tammy Hsieh ran 2:37:00 at CIM and hit the OTQ standard on the number to qualify for the US Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando, FL on Feb 3, 2024! When Tammy turned the final corner, the finish line clock read 2:36:50 and she kicked for home with everything she had left and crossed the line at 2:37:03. There were a few uncertain moments before friends showed Tammy her chip time and someone from the CIM team draped her with the coveted OTQ banner so she could celebrate her huge accomplishment. Tammy became the 173rd woman to earn her spot in this year's race. She has been on quite a tear over the past two years—just look at her amazing progression: 2:48 - CIM 2021 2:45 - Indy 2022 2:37:44 - Ottawa 5/28/2023 2:37:00 - CIM 12/8/2023 We covered: -Coaching & her training approach with Kim Conley -Her Ottawa build vs CIM—her 1st time logging 100M weeks -Her start in NYC training with Central Park Track Club -Moving to Boston & training with the Boston Hares -Her drive/passion/fire—where it comes from -Mindset, mantras, & self-talk on the course -Her plan for Orlando -Community service There are so many great nuggets to unpack in this one and I'm stoked to keep following Tammy's inspiring journey! "It's not easy to talk about the disappointments. It's not easy to talk about the times that you fall short. Nobody wants to brag about those. It's been hard. There were lots of tears shed in private. And just really accepting the fact that I wanted something so badly, and it didn't happen." Emilee Risteen has raced six marathons in the past 12 months, each in pursuit of one very specific goal. For the past year, Emilee has been trying to qualify for the Olympic Marathon Trials, which would mean running 26.2 miles in 2:37 or faster. She ran CIM in 2:43, Houston in 2:48, Boston in 2:41, Grandma's in 2:38 (a personal best and so close to that 2:37!), the McKirdy Micro in 2:41, and CIM one more time in 2:44. In this conversation, Emilee — who ran her first marathon in 4:03 and has taken nearly 90 minutes off her time in less than three years — talks about chasing her big goals, and about what happens when you don't quite get there. Plus, she talks about how going for sub-2:37 was initially about the time and the OTQ, but ultimately became about so much more. Briana Boehmer had dreamed about qualifying for an Olympic trials since she was young. But she'd let go of that dream as she moved into her 40s. In her mind, she had aged out. That all changed in 2020. Boehmer's first competitive sport was running, which she did through college. After college, she became a competitive triathlete, eventually working up to racing the Ironman distance, which involves swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles, and then running the distance of a marathon, 26.2 miles. With the onset of COVID in 2020, however, Boehmer returned to running only and decided to run a marathon. This was an event she'd never done on its own, without having swum and cycled for hours before. In her first marathon, the 2021 California International Marathon or CIM, which took place in December 5, Boehmer shocked herself by running 2:33. With that time, she set the Masters 40+ course record and earned 7th place in the open women's field. Additionally, those scuttled Olympic trials dreams were suddenly back up for grabs: the Olympic trials qualifying (OTQ) time for the 2024 trials was 2:37. But there was one big hiccough: the window to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Marathon Trials didn't open until January 1, 2022. After that debut marathon, Boehmer was plagued by a series of injuries that kept her from getting that OTQ. Her final opportunity was CIM 2023, on December 3, and she was eager to race in the kit of her new sponsor Oiselle, as part of the company's innovative Underbirds program. Unfortunately, an injury flare up just one week out from CIM ultimately led to Boehmer making the incredibly tough but necessary decision to not start CIM. This is the story of what it looks like to face the fears and disappointment of making the difficult choice not to race, when there are big dreams at stake. This is also what it looks like to remove limiting beliefs and experience the power of unwavering support. To borrow Boehmer's words: "I've already won." “My mentality that day was, I wanted to improve my tombstone.” The Olympic Marathon Trials is February 3rd and we plan to tell tales of D3 grads that hit will be in Orlando. Today, we bring you the story of Dan Vassallo. Dan qualified for his third Olympic Trials at the McKirdy Micro Marathon in October. Vassallo's longevity in the sport is something to be studied. He graduated from Colby in 2007 and immediately jumped into the Marathon. He didn't run his first OTQ until 2014 when he won the Philly Marathon in 2:17:28 In 2023, his OTQ time was 2:17:39 The biggest day of his running career came on Marathon Monday in 2018. With the wind howling and the rain crashing down, Vassallo finished 10th overall at the Boston Marathon. Being from the Boston area, this was everything he wanted. He'll go deeper into the race but something he will always remember. This is a great D3 journeyman story of continuing to keep the dream alive and realizing it's worth to still get after it. We join Colin in part 2 of this series as he talks about his introduction to the Pittsburgh Track Club. We discuss his build up to Grandmas Marathon and finally what we all came to hear, his OTQ. Last weekend I had the immense privilege of watching nearly 40 athletes earn an OTQ marathon time at the McKirdy Micro Marathon. One of those athletes was Alex Burks. In one of the most insightful and powerful conversations we've ever had on this this, Alex describes the last four years in which he persevered through challenges, worked is butt off, fell short many times, and eventually earned his lofty goal of qualifying for the Olympic Trials. Below is the text from an Instagram post that Alex wrote after the experience that touches on the emotions of the day: "2:17:13 I don't know if there's an adequate way to put into words what today feels like and means to me. As I'm sure you all know by now I've taken several attempts at qualifying for the Olympic Trials, and have failed each time. [The day before the race], I woke up with a tight chest and fever. My 4 mile shakeout at 7:20 pace felt miserable. I called up my coach and we talked about other race options, but after that conversation was over, it was all business with still making the most out of race day. I've grown so accustomed to disappointment. I've considered giving up and throwing in the towel too many times in the past year and a half. However, and I genuinely don't think I can express this enough, I am beyond blessed to have SO MANY people in my life that continue to believe in me, support me, and give me the strength to carry on. [Raceday] was a test of belief in myself. I had the fitness to run an OTQ, I just needed to keep calm, and not let what was in between the ears be my downfall. And it wasn't. I don't think I changed pace by more than 2-3 seconds for every lap of the course. Even the last 3 miles I didn't even consider speeding up. "Just don't slow down, stay calm and patient". Then I crossed the line. Every time I failed, every time I felt not good enough, every time I considered giving up, it all washed away - and I cried. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I love and appreciate you all. You make this worth it. You make this mean something. Never give up on that dream, ever." You can follow Alex at www.instagram.com/alexander.burks. In this episode we are joined by Jeff Cunningham to talk through the Olympic Trials Qualifying process during this cycle. Jeff is the head coach of the Bat City Track Club in Austin, Texas and coach's many other elite and sub-elite athletes who are pushing for the OTQ standard. Jeff dives into the high and lows that are ingrained in this process, what the 2:37 standard has done for his female athletes, his experience at the McKirdy Micro Marathon with eight of his athletes, the dedication needed to "go for it," his expectations for the final six weeks of the OTQ window, and much, much more. On the Relay side, the call was led by Peter Bromka (no stranger to the OTQ conversation) and Matt Chittim.
This weekend we saw an astonishing number of OTQ performances with most them coming from the McKirdy Micro Marathon. We break down the event after two members of our team attended the race and witnessed the unique experience first hand. We also talk about high mileage weeks, compare those to training done decades ago, and what we can learn from those comparisons. Also, we have an intense back and forth about acceptable cereals. Truth but told, we inexplicably start the podcast with this topic... This episode features Lindsey Hein, Laura Thweatt, Tommie Runz, Peter Bromka, and Matt Chittim.

In S3Ep5 of the PRP, Adam finally gets the opportunity to break bread with local running store owner, community building connoisseur and endurance athlete extraordinaire Nicholas Stanko who has been preparing for the Coast to Coast Gravel Grinder on June 24th, 2023. It is great to get professional triathlete, OTQ marathoner, and accomplished coach Sarah Bishop back on the show for Coach's Corner. Sarah and I talk about the importance of racing, practicing that skill set, how to approach the starting line and pacing plan with control and excitement, and an open discussion about the long layoff from races that most people have had and how it could affect them in their fall racing. Sarah joined the McKirdy Trained staff in 2018 and has been helping runners and mothers like herself reach their running goals ever since. As a wife and mother of four young children, she understands how overwhelming life can be, and the importance of making time for yourself. Channeling this stress into daily running and training goals not only made her a better mother, wife, and coach, but also led to her to accomplishing things she never thought possible. Meet Sydney Devore, 2x OTQ and 7th American in Boston in the strongest field ever assembled in the storied race's 127-year history. Sydney set a goal of top 10 and showed up big time, rocking a 2:31:08—closing strong in the hills to get it done! Sydney has overcome a lot of adversity to get to this point and is just starting to scratch the surface. Multiple stress fractures, tragically losing her mom, and training through brutally tough Michigan winters. Those struggles have made her stronger. Joining McKirdy Trainied as a coach connected her with so many athletes, where she encourages them to find joy in the process and their wins return that joy. Her mom imparted that valuable lesson and it helps her reframe her toughest moments. Sydney also shares her big goals with her athletes and she can feel them as she is crossing the timing mats, knowing they are tracking her on race day. "I ran this race with so much joy that no matter the outcome, I was going to be happy. I am so damn proud of my 7th-place American finish. I am proud of my time of 2:31:08 and the way I ran the race. We always want more, but I am grateful to be making sustainable gains in the right direction." Sydney personifies the "Stay In the Fight" ethos and is SO easy to root for! Fresh off a 4minute PR and an OTQ, Jesse Joseph joins D3 Glory Days. One look at Jesse's TFRRs and his marathon PR, and you see a classic story of progression. Jesse didn't see a breakthrough in his running until his senior year. That's when he finally made the varsity cross country team and qualified for the 10k outdoors. That breakthrough was everything he needed to keep going with running. After graduation, he moved up to Portland, Oregon where he immersed himself in the running culture. He trains with the Jacuzzi Boys Athletic Club and his wife also runs competitively. A big reason for Jesse's continued success after college comes from the community he's in. He's grateful to be surrounded by people that still want to get after it and chase their dreams. He's just a week removed from running 2:16:48 but it already has him wondering what he can do next. Catch Jesse in local track and XC races around Portland before he jets off to run in Orlando for the Olympic Trials. BPN Ambassador We're excited to be Ambassadors for Bare Performance Nutrition. "There was so much joy, not just at the finish line, but throughout the whole time." Fresh off of winning the Carmel Marathon in 2:33, we welcome Parley Hannan back to D3 Glory Days. The 3x D3 Champion from Ithaca ran an OTQ in her debut marathon. She takes us through her training and how she necessarily wasn't planning to run a marathon. She also is very honest and open with us about her disordered eating and how it impacted her today. Much of her early running post collegiately was a way to quiet the voices in her head that were caused by her eating disorder. She opens up about taking herself to get treatment at a clinic in Denver and why she left. Parley reflected on how this race has inspired her to realize she can train and fuel in a healthy manner so she can continue to improve her marathon time. We're excited to see Parley running so well and can't wait to see what she does next. BPN Ambassador We're excited to be Ambassadors for Bare Performance Nutrition. Our Boston Marathon previews continue with Dani Moreno. Dani, one of the top sub-ultra trail runners in the world, is gearing up for Boston in a way that is truly unique. Not only is a road marathon not her forte, but her home of Mammoth Lakes, CA has had historic snowfall that pushed nearly all of her running onto the treadmill. Despite the atypical build, Dani nearly nabbed an OTQ time at the Ventura Half Marathon several weeks ago. In this episode she details her recent training, her spectacular race at Ventura, her strategy for Boston, and her race weekend logistics. Finally, Dani talks about her new podcast, Sub Hub, that you can find on your favorite podcast provider.
Want to know how to halve your first marathon time? Ask Jereny Rivera, which is what we did for this guest episode of The Drop. Jereny started running in 2015 and ran her first marathon in 5 hours and 25 minutes. Since then, she's lost over 50 lbs and knocked 2.5+ hours off her time. Just last month she ran a 2:47 in Houston and is looking to hit the OTQ time this year. She's also a run streaker, cause of course she is. In her first marathon since the 2020 Olympic Trials, Sara Passani dropped a 6 minute PR to run 2:34 at CIM.
