"{Houston} was a really great season opener and showed me again that I could fuel like I even fuel in the half marathon now, it's I'm able to take fuel. It's, and sustain my training and feel healthy and finishing strong in my races," shares Molly Bookmyer. Bookmyer is an elite distance runner based in Columbus OH. She walked onto the Ohio State XC/Track and FIeld teams, but left the sport before graduating because of some frustrating injuries and health issues. She wasn't getting regular periods, which actually led to her healthcare team discovering a small brain tumor. After some time away from the sport she got back into distance running and eventually qualified for both the 2020 and 2024 Marathon Olympic Trials. While her marathon and half-marathon times have improved over the years—she ran a PR and won the 2024 Twin Cities Marathon in 2:28, and ran a half-marathon PR at the 2025 Houston Marathon with a 1:09—she has also navigated some intense challenges with gut health and fueling.  We recorded this right before she traveled to DC where she ran the Cherry Blossom 10-miler, which she finished in 52:42, 8th overall female and 7th american. As she shared on Instagram, she “Ran over a minute PR in the 10 mile race and snagged a 10k PR of 32:11 in the process”.  Next up is London, so we'll be virtually cheering for her in a few weeks! This episode covers a lot! We discuss:  Her 14th place finish at the Half marathon championships in March 2025 Why she's planning to do more races this year How she walked onto the XC/TF team at Ohio State in college, her experience as a collegiate athlete, and why she quit after a few years How she found out she had a small brain tumor, which may have been related to her experience with amenorrhea  Why and how she got back into high level/elite running, which only a few years later landed her in 3rd place at the 2019 US 25K Championship How her fueling has evolved, especially after two stress fractures in/around 2020, and then a very unpleasant experience during the 2022 Houston Marathon Her gluten-free fueling strategies and what's working well for her now Her water bottle secret for elites And her post-race journaling prompts!  Follow Molly on Instagram to cheer her on, @MollyBookie.  Follow Lane 9 @Lane9Project.  Connect with a women's health and sport clinician to get support with YOUR fueling, mental health, and/or period health by going to Lane9Project.org/directory.

Qualia Senolytic is designed to selectively target and eliminate damaged or dysfunctional cells in the body, which are called senescent cells.  By removing these cells, senolytics aim to rejuvenate tissues, reduce inflammation, and reverse some aspects of aging.  Early research has shown senolytics can…  Lead to a reduction in systemic inflammation Improve vascular function by reducing senescent cell burden in the arteries. Enhance muscle regeneration while also increasing exercise capacity and decreasing recovery time Lead to significant improvements in joint health Ready to resist aging at the cellular level? Try Qualia Senolytic and use the code RTTT15 to save 15% off any purchase. MAS Iron Outside of training deficiencies, low iron is one of the most common reasons for poor results during workouts and races.  Recent research indicates that almost 56% of male runners and 86% of female runners suffer from an iron deficiency that severely hampers performance. The problem with eating iron-rich foods or supplementing with traditional iron supplements is that iron is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb and utilize. In fact, only about 25% of dietary iron found in animal sources is absorbed while 17% or less of the iron from plant sources is absorbed. But MAS Iron has found a way to combat these absorption issues to ensure you can get the iron you need for health and performance. By combining the most efficiently absorbed form of elemental iron with clinically proven ingredients to aid in absorption, MAS Iron performs like no other iron product on the market. In fact, clinical research has shown the combination of ingredients in MAS Iron can quadruple absorption and increase bioavailability by 30%, all while reducing GI issues by 50%. With six weeks until the Twin Cities Marathon – an early October race she'd had her eye on for the better part of 18-months! – Stéphanie's family received the devastating news that her vibrant & energetic 67 year old father had been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. As disorienting as this period of time was, Stéphanie chose to keep on training with full awareness that she might not get to toe the start line in Minneapolis. This is a deeply vulnerable & personal story about love and loss, and the role that running can play during dark times. Like a familiar friend, it provided Stéphanie with a source of comfort and a sense of control amidst an otherwise chaotic & confusing phase of life. For something so universal, grief is not talked about nearly enough and this ranks up there as one of the most important & impactful conversations I've had on the show yet! When Molly Monk was diagnosed with the chronic condition known as POTS in 2019, she struggled to find her footing and identity while hit with bouts of exhaustion that sometimes kept her from doing even basic activities like standing to brush her teeth. She got to wondering, could someone with a condition like hers do something like run a marathon? To find out, she helped start a group for people who thought there was no way they could run a marathon, either. Together, they plan to cross the finish line at the Twin Cities Marathon on Sunday. For our last show of the year we want to bring you some of our favorite stories, and some of the top stories of 2023. Minnesota Now always brings you the latest headlines and thoughtful conversation with Minnesotans across the state. Each member of the Minnesota Now team picked a top headline or favorite story. Twin Cities Marathon cancellationOne of the top stories of 2023 was the cancellation of the Twin Cities Marathon. It was Oct. 1, we had record breaking heat. It's only the second time it's ever been canceled in it's four decades. The decision was a talker, whether or not you were a runner. Covering it on the show is an example of what we do on Minnesota Now, it was a story across many angles: community, fitness and global warming. Marijuana legalizationAnother top headline of 2023 was undoubtably the legalization of marijuana. From the first day of legalization on Aug. 1, and since then, the only place able to legally sell cannabis is tribal reservations. We took a look back to the first days of legalization, where there was a rush of people at the White Earth Nation waiting to get their hands on weed. End-of-life billAn end-of-life bill that didn't get a hearing in the 2023 legislative session will be re-introduced during the 2024 session. It's a bill that would allow people of sound mind, with a terminal illness, to choose the time of their death with a physician-prescribed dose of lethal medication. In June, we had a conversation with an end-of-life doula. It was one of our most read stories online this year, and it was a thoughtful conversation about her mother's death. Cheryl Hauser, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2019, decided to end her life, on her terms, before the worst of the disease took effect. To do that, she planned to stop eating and drinking. It's a process known as V-SED, which stands for “voluntarily stopping eating and drinking.” Hauser died on June 2 at the age of 76 with her family and caregivers making sure she was comfortable and without pain or anxiety.Unionization in the nonprofit sectorUnion organizers on the national level have called summer of 2023 “Hot Labor Summer.” Hollywood writers went on strike, actors joined them in July. By fall, the United Auto Workers were on strike nationwide. New unions formed this year too, and not just at private companies. In Minnesota, newly unionized workers include doctors with Allina Health, University of Minnesota graduate students, and climate advocated with MN350 — all are nonprofits. ‘Reservation Dogs' FX's hit show “Reservation Dogs” aired its final season in 2023. And the show has some Minnesota connections. Actor Dallas Goldtooth, and producers and writers Migizi Pensoneau and Bobby Wilson all work on the show. They also all hail from Indigenous communities in Minnesota and happen to be best friends. We take you back to an insightful and comedic conversation on how the three of them are breaking barriers.

Barb Broad is a 73-year old runner who lives and trains in Cleveland, Ohio. Barb is a retired Speech-Language Pathologist who discovered running, thanks to one of her sporty female friends, when she was 40 years old. Instantaneously, she loved the sport, becoming more and more passionate about it…she trained with coaches, went to a nutritionist, and general fully committed to being the best she could be. She tells that story and in particular honors a coach who saw something special in her. And pay attention because this is a great lesson for all of us: Barb raced her best marathon times in her sixties: 3:19:01 when she was 60 at the 2011 Boston Marathon and in 2012 when she was 62 at the Twin Cities Marathon she ran 3:18:40 to win the Masters Marathon Age Graded Championship. During her career she has run twenty-tree marathons including eight times at Boston where she won her age group four times. She's run about a half dozen half marathons with a PR of 1:33:09 at 62 years old. On the track she's won multiple gold medals in the 400, 800, 1500, 3000, 5000, and mile, including breaking the world age group record in the mile with a 5:59.5. Today we are hosted by Dr. Eileen Gallagher who is joined by Vicki Hunter.  Vicki grew up on the East Coast, displaying a competitive spirit from an early age. Tetherball and other sports were not merely sources of enjoyment, but opportunities for her to strive for victory. Throughout her schooling, Vicki engaged in various athletic pursuits, including tennis, basketball, softball, and lacrosse. After completing her education, Vicki sought a competitive outlet and ventured into short-distance triathlons. However, her deepest affinity lay with running, leading her to focus on running races and eventually transitioning to the demanding marathon distance.   In 1985, Vicki's move to Boulder, Colorado for graduate school exposed her to the world of elite running. Fortuitously, she crossed paths with numerous professional runners who graciously mentored her. Until then, Vicki had been oblivious to the existence of the Olympic Trials. Nevertheless, she resolved to qualify for the marathon trials, undeterred by the fact that her best marathon time was 3:50, over an hour slower than the qualifying mark. Through dedication, countless miles, and eighteen months of unwavering commitment, Vicki accomplished her goal in September 1987. At the Twin Cities Marathon, she clocked an impressive time of 2:49:24, securing her spot in the 1988 Olympic Trials Marathon. This qualification was a remarkable feat, but it also initiated a journey of relentless ambition and competitiveness that yielded unforeseen repercussions.   In 1997, Vicki married and became pregnant. Tragically, at fourteen weeks into her pregnancy, she was involved in a single-car accident on September 11.   The accident inflicted severe injuries upon her, including ten broken ribs, a broken sacrum, a broken pubic symphysis, a collapsed lung, a punctured liver, and three skull fractures resulting in a brain injury. The critical first forty-eight hours after the accident determined their survival, and the medical professionals acknowledged that Vicki's physical fitness played a pivotal role. She spent six weeks in the hospital and eventually returned home, albeit confined to a wheelchair. The ensuing five months were dedicated to regaining her strength, driven by the desire to ensure a healthy delivery for her baby. Vicki approached her due date as she would a race, constructing a recovery plan that encompassed endurance and strength training.   On March 12, 1998, Jade was born, precisely on her due date.   Vicki has since devoted her life to discovering the most effective recovery methods, and one of her true passions lies in sharing these insights with as many individuals as possible. She upholds a principle of personal experience, never recommending anything to her clients that she has not undertaken herself.   Vicki holds her Ph.D. in Political Science and is now retired from The University of Colorado where she taught for 23 years. She is a certified Foundation Training Instructor, Level I and II as well as a Certified Lydiard Running Coach, Level II. Her book, “Running and Returning: Seeking Balance in an Imperfect World,” was published in 2022 and recounts her journey in an effort to help others learn from her experiences.   Links: Foundation Training: https://www.foundationtraining.com/ Dr. Eric Goodman V Force: https://vforcepro.com/ Dr. Vicki Hunter Anatomy Course: https://www.anatomytrains.com/ Tom Myers

We brought some A+ brain energy and some C+ heart efficiency to this awesome episode! The main topics involved the extremely eventful weeks in the running world. On the joyous side, the Chicago Marathon was a race for the history books, with a new world record and blazing fast times from US runners. We celebrate the incredible Molly Seidel, plus talk about body image, fueling, rest days, training volume, and more. On the less joyous side, we discuss a controversy from a brand's social media post about the Boston Marathon. You know the one. And if you don't, get ready for a wild ride into the intersection of marketing, social media, and unintended consequences. We break it down, challenge each other, and hopefully come to a loving conclusion... After Megan was 100% right, of course. And this episode was jam-packed with a mix of both important and irreverent discussions! Topics: last week's heart health setback, our hope for the future, training partners, protein intake, starting strength work, the cancellation of the Twin Cities Marathon due to heat and what that means for the future, abnormal heart rate responses, how to manage inflammation, and a listener corner email that will BLOW YOUR MIND. Runners are gearing up for this weekend's Twin Cities Marathon.  Participants have been training for months. They've pushed through mental and physical barriers, they've hit their strides and they're chasing a “runner's high” to the finish line.  Getting to where you can run a marathon is no easy task, and getting started as a runner can be just as daunting as a 26.2-mile goal. But you don't have to go at it alone. Running groups and running communities around Minnesota aren't just helping people run a marathon — they specialize in helping people complete their first mile.  MPR News host Angela Davis talks with three runners about the joys and pains of running. You'll hear how to get started and how to join a running community. We'll also hear from a Twin Cities organization bringing people together through running teams.  Guests:  Mishka Vertin is the co-founder and executive director of Mile in My Shoes, an organization that connects runners throughout the Twin Cities with people experiencing homelessness, in recovery or in transition from incarnation or military service through running teams.  Andrea Haus is the community and marketing manager at Mill City Running in northeast Minneapolis and Saint City Running in St Paul. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. My favorite flavor is watermelon salt, but citrus salt is also a banger. I'm drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It's tasty and delicious and I find that I'm not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn't eating enough sodium. There's now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you're worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. So check out DrinkLMNT to try their new flavor or get a free sampler pack.
