US National Teamer Torri Huske made her mark on the final day of the 2021 VHSL Class 6 State meet, breaking two National High School records.  Huske, a senior at Yorktown High School, began her meet by swimming a time of 1:53.73 in the 200 IM, chopping a tenth of a second off of Dagny Knutson’s National Public High School record of 1:53.82 that had stood since 2009.  About 27 minutes later, Huske was back in the pool swimming the 100 butterfly, putting up another National Public High School record. Huske touched in a time of 49.95 to become the first swimmer to break 50 seconds during a high school competition. Her time shattered her own record of 50.67 set earlier this month, and 17-18 National Age Group record of 50.19 that was set by Olivia Bray in 2019. Francesca grew up in an Irish-Catholic family in a small town in Northern New Jersey, about 20 miles west of New York City. Her childhood and youth were defined by her Catholic school education and by formidable nuns who encouraged their students to strive to make the world a better place.   Her college years led her to her mother's alma mater, Trinity College in Washington DC, where she earned a BA in English. She spent her junior year abroad at The University of East Anglia in England, a truly life-changing experience. The time she spent backpacking all over Europe broadened her understanding of the world around her and deepened her resolve to immerse herself in it.    After graduation, Francesca worked for The US National Park Service at Arlington House in Arlington Cemetery, Virginia, the Robert E Lee Memorial. She gave tours in period costume hoop skirts, using sign language she learned at Gallaudet University for specialized tours for the deaf. This experience sparked her interest in teaching and motivated her to earn her MA in Secondary Education from The College of William and Mary. She began teaching English at Yorktown High School in Virginia.   At Yorktown, she created a popular elective course in World Literature which examined the texts of the major religions and the literature associated with the rise of these various belief systems. Guided field trips to a mosque, synagogue, and the National Cathedral were part of this program; she worked with students in developing a peer-facilitation program and was Chair of the English Department. She retired in July of 2020, after 36 years in the classroom, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.    Francesca is the founder and President of the Board of Directors of Teen Angel Project, an ensemble of middle and high school students who sing and dance in nursing homes, rehab centers, and veterans' facilities, free of charge, and the founder and CEO of Eire-Go Tours, designing and leading culturally educational tours to Ireland. In 2020, she co-directed the virtual Kids' Camp for the annual Irish cultural immersion program, Musical Arts and Dance Week for the O’Neill Malcom Branch of the Dublin, Ireland-based Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann.     Now in retirement, she satisfies her need to teach and discuss literature and writing with teens and young people through her tutoring business, WriteAwayMoCo. High school isn't the highlight of life for most of us—it certainly wasn't for me. The four years span our early teenage years through young adulthood, with all the turmoil and transition of adolescence. I've become more interested in the field of education as my own kids have gotten older. They're still in elementary school but already I'm understanding the place of our educators in nurturing students' development—not just academically, but socially and emotionally, too. Our high schools have a big responsibility as they help students navigate many changes. How can teachers, administrators, and parents help young people to emerge from high school with the knowledge and character to meet life's challenges? I turned to Dr. Ray Pasi to help me think through these questions. Ray recently retired after serving 29 years as a high school principal, the last 20 in Yorktown High School in Arlington, VA. He shared his insights on numerous topics in the field of education, including: How teachers can promote student engagement The role of technology (e.g., PowerPoint) in the classroom What makes an excellent teacher The elements of a strong high school The role of schools in students' social and emotional learning The imperative of never giving up on a student The challenge of social media for school administrators The growing concern of safety in schools How parents can evaluate a potential school Ray is an adjunct faculty member in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at The George Washington University, which is how I met him back in 1999. I came across an article in the student newspaper at Yorktown High School that captured the essence of what Ray brought to his work as a principal. Entitled "In Pasi We Trust," the writer concluded, "It is no question that he will be missed, but his legacy is so deeply ingrained in the foundation of the institution that no matter the changes and the new students that enter the doors, Pasi’s mark will forever be left on the outside of 5200 Yorktown Boulevard." Read more in this article about Ray in the Washington Post, from shortly after his arrival at Yorktown: Embracing Academics.

We’ve been hearing a lot about the Dreamers lately. These are people who were brought into the United States illegally as children and are eligible for DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals – a program that temporarily shields some young immigrants from deportation, and allows them to work legally. President Trump ordered an end to DACA back in September, putting 800,000 Dreamers in limbo. In the midst of all the political posturing concerning Dreamers, it’s tough to remember that the vast majority of them are simply people who have spent most of their lives in our country and love it dearly. Today we’re joined by two of them. Lizzette Arias is the Executive Director of the Dream Project, an Arlington-based non-profit that provides scholarships, mentoring, and advocacy for Dreamers; and Selena Caceres, a Yorktown High School student and Dream Project mentee. They join us to share their personal Dreamer stories, and their reactions to events on Capitol Hill.
