The USS Somers: Midshipman Philip Spencer's Pirate Obsession and Captain Mackenzie's Taste for Violence.Richard Snow's book, Sailing the Graveyard Sea, recounts the 1842 voyage of the USS Somers, the US Navy's only mutiny. The mutiny centered on Midshipman Philip Spencer, born in 1824, son of prominent lawyer John Spencer. Philip was a difficult, unruly dreamer who withdrew into pirate stories, donating the massive The Pirate's Own Book to his school library. His father secured Philip a naval berth, hoping strict discipline would reform him. Spencer joined as a junior midshipman and quickly became isolated. He was walleyed, giving him a "slightly scary gaze" that could be interpreted as untrustworthy. The commander was Lieutenant Alexander Slidell Mackenzie, whose fame rested on A Year in Spain, largely ghostwritten by Washington Irving. Despite his respectable marriage, Mackenzie harbored a "tragic detail": he was a violent, flogging captain who wrote with "lubricious detail" about attending public hangings. The Somersset sail in September 1842 for Africa with a crew of 120, consisting of only 30 mature sailors. 1861

The Overgunned School Ship: Conditions Aboard the USS Somers. Richard Snow discusses how the USS Somers, a beautiful and fast ship, was small—only 100 feet long—and overgunned with ten 32-pounders. The crew consisted of 120 people, with only about 30 mature sailors and the remaining majority being midshipmen meant to learn basic seamanship. The vessel was very crowded. Midshipman Philip Spencer was isolated from other midshipmen and began consorting with the common crew, which was highly inappropriate. Spencer had money to spend on forbidden items.

The Fateful Secret: Mackenzie's Panic and the Wardroom's Verdict of Death. Richard Snow discusses how the crisis began on Friday, November 24, 1842, when Philip Spencer detailed his plot to crew member Wales, claiming to have recruited at least 20 people to turn the Somers into a pirate ship. Wales reported the plot to First Lieutenant Gansevoort, who reported to Captain Mackenzie. Mackenzie initially dismissed the claim but quickly became convinced and panicky, ordering Gansevoort to spy on Spencer. On Saturday, Mackenzie confronted Spencer and had him put in irons. Mackenzie grew increasingly suspicious, eventually arresting Boatswain's Mate Cromwell and Seaman Small. The ship's environment became one of "collective insanity" and extreme paranoia. Mackenzie suspiciously delegated the choice by asking his wardroom officers to convene an investigation, and the officers delivered a verdict: for the safety of the vessel, Spencer, Small, and Cromwell had to die. Despite being only hours from fortified land in the Virgin Islands, the verdict was executed.

The Somers Trial: Mackenzie's Defense, Dana's Support, and the Presidential Intervention. Richard Snow discusses how after the execution, the Navy initiated an inquiry. Richard Henry Dana fully supported Mackenzie, describing him as saintly and honorable. The court of inquiry agreed that Mackenzie had behaved honorably. However, Mackenzie surprisingly sought a formal court-martial because John Spencer and Seaman Small's wife were pressuring for a civil murder trial. The court-martial ran from February 2 to March 31 and initially concluded that Mackenzie was honorably acquitted and heroic. However, President Tyler intervened, refusing to endorse the verdict and believing Mackenzie should have been hanged as a murderer. Mackenzie was acquitted and avoided a murder trial, but his honor was tarnished. Snow recommends readers act as the jury to decide Mackenzie's actions. Retry

At the Crexendo UGM, Mike Somers, Founder and COO of Beetexting, sat down with Doug Green, Publisher of Technology Reseller News, to discuss Beetexting's newest integrations and AI innovations for compliance and customer engagement. Beetexting provides a corporate texting platform designed to help teams move beyond email, offering shared inboxes, automation, and collaboration features that streamline customer communication. “We built Beetexting to help teams communicate faster and more effectively,” said Somers. “It's about enabling businesses to connect with their customers in a modern, compliant way.” At the Crexendo UGM, Somers announced that Beetexting has launched a direct integration with NetSapiens, making it easier for Crexendo resellers to provision and manage accounts. “Partners can now log in via SSO, set up accounts, and monitor onboarding success—all within a unified dashboard,” he explained. Somers also revealed a new partnership with Phone.com and several AI-driven tools that address one of the industry's biggest challenges: 10DLC compliance. Beetexting's TCR Agent uses conversational AI to guide businesses through the 10DLC registration process in minutes, while its AI-powered Compliance Agents monitor outgoing messages to ensure adherence to company policies and regulations, including FINRA and HIPAA. “The Compliance Agent is like a hall monitor for messaging,” Somers said. “It helps users stay compliant in real time, prevents issues before they happen, and continuously learns company-specific policies.” With Beetexting's innovations, resellers and service providers can deliver a fully white-labeled, compliant business texting solution that adds measurable value to their communications offerings. "We admire so much how you continue the Greenstone family legacy of intellectual curiosity coupled with daily dedication to learning and Judaism." Reish Lakish interprets Rabbi Meir’s position in a Mishna in Menachot as holding that an offering becomes pigul not due to improper intent during part of the matir (the enabling act), but rather when improper intent occurs during the first stage, and the second stage is performed without any intent, the second stage is still governed by the initial improper thought. Rabbi Shmuel bar Yitzchak disagrees, asserting that Rabbi Meir maintains one can render an offering pigul even through improper intent during part of an action. Two difficulties are raised against Reish Lakish’s explanation based on two halakhot in the Tosefta. Regarding the first, three attempts are made to resolve the contradiction, but each faces its own challenge. One difficulty is also raised against Rabbi Shmuel bar Yitzchak’s position, but it is successfully resolved.

What happens when Deleuze and Hegel are set in violent philosophical encounter over the ruins of Kantian representation? In this episode, we explore how both thinkers attempt to move beyond the categories of judgment and identity to recover the genesis of sense itself. Henry Somers-Hall joins us to trace Deleuze's path through Kant, Sartre, and Bergson toward a field of pre-individual difference and immanent synthesis. What emerges is a portrait of thought that no longer begins with the subject, but with the forces that make thinking possible.Extended Conversation (Patrons Only) In the extended discussion, we turn to the politics of the practical in Kant, Fichte, and Hegel—and ask whether Deleuze's constructivism truly escapes the metaphysical State. Henry also reflects on what it means to make oneself a body without organs and where he sees the next frontier for Deleuzian thought.Hegel, Deleuze, and the Critique of Representation: Dialectics of Negation and Difference: https://sunypress.edu/Books/H/Hegel-Deleuze-and-the-Critique-of-RepresentationAlso: https://archive.org/details/hegeldeleuzecrit0000someSupport the showSupport the podcast:Current classes at Acid Horizon Research Commons (AHRC): https://www.acidhorizonpodcast.com/ahrc-mainWebsite: https://www.acidhorizonpodcast.com/Linktree: https://linktr.ee/acidhorizonAcid Horizon on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acidhorizonpodcast Boycott Watkins Media: https://xenogothic.com/2025/03/17/boycott-watkins-statement/ Join The Schizoanalysis Project: https://discord.gg/4WtaXG3QxnSubscribe to us on your favorite podcast: https://pod.link/1512615438Merch: http://www.crit-drip.comSubscribe to us on your favorite podcast platform: https://pod.link/1512615438 LEPHT HAND: https://www.patreon.com/LEPHTHANDHappy Hour at Hippel's (Adam's blog): https://happyhourathippels.wordpress.comSplit Infinities (Craig's Substack): https://splitinfinities.substack.com/Music: https://sereptie.bandcamp.com/ and https://thecominginsurrection.bandcamp.com/

Send us a textIn this episode, we're tackling a sensitive and  tough conversation that can save lives. We're joined by Dan Somers and Dr Susie Bennett from the men's mental health charity ManUp to talk about male suicide - particularly why men are disproportionately affected, how the empathy gap shows up, and what's really driving the crisis beneath the surface: lack of purpose, isolation and useful tools for emotional regulation. We unpack the gender differences that too often get ignored, how cultural scripts keep men emotionally armoured, and the practical steps that help men open up before they hit the cliff-edge. Content Warning: This episode discusses suicide and may be distressing to some listeners. Many educators associate virtual learning with isolation, disengagement, and students passively staring at screens. But what if the opposite were possible? What if distance learning could be thrilling, social, even addictive—in all the right ways?In this episode, we meet Ben Somers, founder and CEO of Recess.gg, an online platform transforming virtual education into an e-sports-style, team-based experience where students show up because they want to. With live academic games, mentorship, and a thriving virtual economy, Recess builds belonging, identity, and motivation into every challenge. But behind the fun is a serious vision: empowering self-directed learners with the tools—and freedom—they need to thrive.Ben draws from deep experience scaling Synthesis (born from Elon Musk's experimental school) and brings a philosophy rooted in Papert, Dewey, and Montessori to his product design. He argues that engagement is not just a tactic, but an ecosystem built on freedom, community, and purpose.Listeners will learn:Why removing humans from digital learning can kill engagement—and how to bring community back. How Recess balances spontaneity and structure to guide students toward long-term goals. What a “job board for kids” looks like—and how it helps them become creators, not consumers. How AI is being used not to replace human reflection, but to support deeper reflection and mentorship. What it means to design an environment where math is learned like French: fluently, through immersive experience. If you're a virtual school leader, edtech entrepreneur, homeschool parent, or anyone wondering how to make distance learning work better, this episode will challenge your assumptions and show what's possible when engagement is student-driven and purpose-aligned.Episode Links - Recess.gg – Where student agency meets academic gameplay - Seymour Papert – The educational theorist Ben credits as a major influence - Kerbal Space Program – The game teaching kids rocket science and orbital mechanics - Oxford Kids Conference – Where Recess students presented their podcastHost Links - Explore virtual learning resources and programs at CILC.org with Tami Moehring and Allyson Mitchell - Discover global learning experiences at Banyan Global Learning with Seth FleischauerWant to help us reshape distance learning? CTL Script/ Top Stories of August 15th Publish Date: August 15th Pre-Roll: From the Ingles Studio Welcome to the Award-Winning Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast Today is Friday, August 15th and Happy Birthday to Joe Jonas I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are the stories Cherokee is talking about, presented by Times Journal Canton approves contract for creation of Cherokee land bank University System of Georgia packs huge economic punch Cherokee County schools show Milestones improvements Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on Food Apps We’ll have all this and more coming up on the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger Podcast, and if you’re looking for Community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! Commercial: COBB INT. FESTIVAL STORY 1: Canton approves contract for creation of Cherokee land bank The Cherokee Regional Land Bank is inching closer to reality. On Aug. 7, Canton’s City Council gave the green light to an intergovernmental contract to create the land bank. Now, it’s up to the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners, along with the councils in Holly Springs and Woodstock, to decide. No dates yet, but they’ll weigh in soon. So, what’s a land bank? Think of it as a way to breathe life into abandoned or blighted properties—turning eyesores into opportunities. The idea’s been in the works since late 2022, with Canton and Cherokee County leading the charge. If approved, a board of directors will oversee the land bank, with members appointed by the county, cities, and the Cherokee Office of Economic Development. They’ll work unpaid, but their mission? Big: housing, economic development, and revitalizing neglected spaces. Canton Mayor Bill Grant called it a “tool” to tackle housing and economic goals. And while the land bank won’t have eminent domain powers, it could still be a game-changer for the region. Bartow County already has one—maybe Cherokee’s next. STORY 2: University System of Georgia packs huge economic punch Georgia’s public colleges and universities are making waves—big ones. In fiscal 2024, the University System of Georgia (USG) pumped $23.1 billion into the state’s economy. That’s a 5.4% jump from last year. Here’s the breakdown: $15.2 billion came from direct spending—students, staff, and the 26 institutions themselves. The other $7.9 billion? That’s the ripple effect, money flowing into local businesses and communities. And for students? The payoff is huge. A bachelor’s degree from a USG school means, on average, $1.4 million more in lifetime earnings. Master’s grads? $1.7 million. Doctorates? Nearly $2.5 million. USG schools also created jobs—lots of them. About 32% were on campus, but the majority—68%—were off campus, fueling local economies. The studies, led by Jeff Humphreys of UGA’s Selig Center, show just how much these institutions matter—to students, to communities, to the entire state. STORY 3: Cherokee County schools show Milestones improvements The Cherokee County School District is celebrating some solid wins on the Georgia Milestones, with scores improving in most areas compared to last year and outperforming state averages for the 10th year running. Biggest gains? Math, science, and reading saw notable jumps, with highlights like an impressive 7.7% increase in eighth-grade science and a 7.4% boost in Algebra I. But it wasn’t all perfect—third-grade scores dipped slightly, and English Language Arts saw declines in a few grades, especially fifth (-8.3%). School Board Chair Janet Read Welch called the results “proof we’re on the right track,” crediting students, teachers, and parents for the progress. Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis echoed the optimism. The board will dive deeper into the data at its Aug. 21 meeting, with school-by-school results to follow online. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back. Break: HISTORY CHEROKEE STORY 4: Woodstock OKs construction contracts for two fire stations Woodstock is gearing up for two new fire stations, both set to open in 2026. On Aug. 11, the city council approved contracts with Spratlin Construction to build Fire Station 28 on Ridgewalk Parkway and another on Long Drive—both 11,000 square feet. Why now? Rising call volumes. But when the contractor offered savings for building two at once, the city jumped. The move saves $606,000 and avoids hiring extra firefighters, thanks to a clever staffing plan. Station 28 will cost $7.4 million, Long Drive $6.8 million. Both are major investments in public safety, with funding from SPLOST and impact fees. Currently, Woodstock has two fire stations: Station 10, built in 1996, and Station 14, the department’s 2001-built headquarters. The new additions will dramatically improve coverage and response times for the growing city. STORY 5: Cherokee County teacher wins award from Georgia PTA A big shoutout to Mill Creek Middle School’s Ann-Margaret Somers, who just snagged the Georgia PTA’s Birney Butler Outstanding Educator award for middle schools. Pretty amazing, right? This isn’t her first rodeo with recognition. Somers, an eighth-grade science teacher, has racked up honors like Georgia Science Teachers Association’s Middle School Teacher of the Year (2022-23) and Georgia STEM Scholar in 2022—an award only about two dozen teachers statewide receive. Oh, and in 2020? She was one of just 26 teachers nationwide named a Teacher Fellow by the Northrop Grumman Foundation and National Science Teaching Association. Somers joined CCSD in 2015, and clearly, she’s been crushing it ever since. And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on Food Apps Commercial: We’ll have closing comments after this. We discussed NFL teams with the worst Super Bowl odds, including the Jets and Giants at 75-to-1 for their conference. Boomer believes a last-place team often goes to first in their division, possibly the Bears with Ben Johnson. We emphasized the importance of a dynamic quarterback like Josh Allen. The Jets and Giants' over/under for wins is 5 ½. Justin Fields faces a new offense, requiring a learning curve. Boomer predicts the Giants will win at least 6 games, expecting big things from their defense. Jerry gave an update after we talked about our Pebble Beach trip. The Yankees lost to the Rangers with key home runs given up by Devin Williams and Jake Bird. The Mets also lost to the Guardians due to Brett Baty's throwing error. Steve Somers had Jerry Seinfeld on his podcast and is releasing a book. The Kraken mascot was charged by a bear while fishing in Alaska. We concluded the hour discussing the documentary ‘Grizzly Man' and a caller's unsuccessful attempt to use bear spray on a goose.

Shipwrecks as events are probably humanity's most common form of disaster”, writes my guest James Delgado “As such, shipwrecks–aside from epidemics, warfare on land, or great natural disasters—have been the cause of the greatest number of human deaths throughout history. Thanks to ships and other watercraft, humanity did not just walk across the globe from its ancestral home in Africa. We made use of the ocean as a source of food and as a means of travel on our global journey. Humanity's relationship with the water has also been shaped by the reality that for as much as is taken from the sea, something is lost. Those losses are ships, the goods on them, and people. Shipwrecks as events therefore have inspired one of the oldest genres of human reflection on the nature of life; [they] have been and remain a muse for religious thought, literature, music, and art.”These are some of Delgado's introductory observations in his new book The Great Museum of the Sea: A Human History of Shipwrecks, a deep dive into the surprisingly rich history of human disaster at sea, and what those wrecks can tell us, both about the past, and about ourselves. From the cause of shipwreck to the beginnings of maritime archaeology, Delgado offers a history, a meditation, and pieces of a maritime archaeologist's autobiography. James Delgado is Senior Vice President of SEARCH, Inc., the leading cultural resources firm in the United States. Previously he has been Director of Maritime Heritage for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; President and CEO of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology (INA); and host of the National Geographic international television series "The Sea Hunters". He was last on the podcast in Episode 292 to discuss his book The Curse of the Somers, in the course of which conversation he became the only guest in the over four hundred episodes of this podcast to break into song.
