Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
Shipwrecks as events are probably humanity's most common form of disaster”, writes my guest James Delgado “As such, shipwrecks–aside from epidemics, warfare on land, or great natural disasters—have been the cause of the greatest number of human deaths throughout history. Thanks to ships and other watercraft, humanity did not just walk across the globe from its ancestral home in Africa. We made use of the ocean as a source of food and as a means of travel on our global journey. Humanity's relationship with the water has also been shaped by the reality that for as much as is taken from the sea, something is lost. Those losses are ships, the goods on them, and people. Shipwrecks as events therefore have inspired one of the oldest genres of human reflection on the nature of life; [they] have been and remain a muse for religious thought, literature, music, and art.”These are some of Delgado's introductory observations in his new book The Great Museum of the Sea: A Human History of Shipwrecks, a deep dive into the surprisingly rich history of human disaster at sea, and what those wrecks can tell us, both about the past, and about ourselves. From the cause of shipwreck to the beginnings of maritime archaeology, Delgado offers a history, a meditation, and pieces of a maritime archaeologist's autobiography. James Delgado is Senior Vice President of SEARCH, Inc., the leading cultural resources firm in the United States. Previously he has been Director of Maritime Heritage for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; President and CEO of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology (INA); and host of the National Geographic international television series "The Sea Hunters". He was last on the podcast in Episode 292 to discuss his book The Curse of the Somers, in the course of which conversation he became the only guest in the over four hundred episodes of this podcast to break into song. He has a very pleasant baritone. For Further Investigation "The Blake Ridge Wreck: A Deepwater Antebellum Fishing Craft"Cynthia Kierner on disasters, including shipwrecks, in antebellum America*

Chaz is back from vacation, and shared a story of running into a laughing goat at a restaurant in Vermont. (0:00) Russell Ruff of Somers, CT is richer today because of his cat, Patches. Russell won $150,000, after his cat found the winning ticket behind his bed while hiding from fireworks. (5:44) In Dumb Ass News, the story of a couple having sex while drunkenly driving their RV takes a backseat to the obviously uncomfortable reporter covering the story. (17:17) Comedian Vince Berry was in studio with Chaz and AJ this morning, and he and his mother suggested the next guest, Martha Byrne. Martha was on the phone to talk about her husband's arrest by the FBI in 2020, which she is still fighting in Washington D.C. this week. (22:33) Pigs were a surprise guest at the company picnic last week, but things took a dark turn when they started biting employees. Ruth got it the worst, after the biggest pig nearly took off the tip of her finger. (39:45) Two baseball coaches lost their jobs for stripping and streaking on the field in front of children. (56:06)

Welcome to a special bonus episode of the Military to Financial Planner Podcast! I'm Daniel Kopp, and today I'm joined by my SkillBridge intern, Russ Meyer, for the inaugural session of our PME Book Club. We're diving deep into "Advice That Sticks: How to Give Financial Advice That People Will Follow" by Dr. Moira Somers—one of my hands-down favorite books for any financial planner, and honestly, for anyone who wants to make their advice more impactful in any area of life. Russ and I explore what makes advice “stick,” the science and psychology behind why people don't always follow sound, technically correct advice, and how we as professionals—and humans—can help bridge that gap. We discuss Dr. Somers' FACTS framework (Facts, Acknowledgement, Curiosity, Timing, and Support), the importance of open-ended listening, the stages of client change, and the sometimes surprising emotional complexities in the planner-client relationship. This episode isn't just for financial planners! Whether you're a parent, spouse, mentor, or just someone who genuinely wants to help others—this conversation reveals how to move from simply giving advice to fostering real, lasting change.
Growing up, I knew I wanted to be an attorney since I was a sophomore in high school; my guest this week had me beat by 8 years. All of my peers thought I was crazy to have a kid right as I was about to finish law school; my guest this week earned her JD at night while working a full-time job. I could do more of these comparisons, but the point is that hurdles take on a lot of different forms, sometimes obvious but sometimes not. As lawyers we want the necessary facts, and while that's great for understanding a case, people are often a lot more nuanced. My conversation this week was one of the best reminders I've had in a while to slow down and get to know someone else's story. So with that in mind, my guest this week is Breeana Somers, a litigation associate with Ballad Spahr whose practice focuses on consumer financial services matters.Earning a place in 2024's “Ones to Watch” by Best Lawyers in America, her journey has been anything but traditional, but nothing short of extraordinary.Enjoy the show.

But this conversation goes far beyond crafting this sprawling family drama. Allison is pulling back the curtain on how she writes such emotionally resonant stories while navigating ADHD and the beautiful writing habits she's uncovered by simply embracing her creative brain.Home of the American Circus is set in Somers, NY—the birthplace of the American circus and the author's hometown. Freya must return home after a financial emergency in this beautiful family drama. The house she's returned to is crumbling, and the relationships are even more so. But when she discovers her 15-year-old niece secretly living there, she unravels her past and reimagines what healing might look like.In this warm conversation, Allison and I discuss:
Once, trains chugged right through the heart of Kalispell, making it a bustling railroad hub and commercial center in Northwest Montana. A spur line linked the town to Somers on Flathead Lake, where passengers and freight moved daily between Kalispell's Great Northern Depot and the steamboat terminal. Though the trains stopped running decades ago and the tracks removed, their impact still echoes today. At the Northwest Montana History Museum, visitors can now step back in time through a detailed model railroad display as part of an exhibit highlighting the region's timber industry roots. Find out about the volunteers who made the display happen with Daily Inter Lake's story Traveling Back in Time. Read Heidi Desch's full story online. The average American family spends over $24,000 a year on healthcare, and costs continue to rise faster than inflation. Why can't we create a healthcare system that delivers more value for less money? In this conversation with Ann Somers Hogg, Director of Healthcare Research at the Clayton Christensen Institute, we explore the concept of "Zero Inflation Healthcare" and uncover why traditional health insurance models continue to drive costs up. Ann breaks down why many InsureTech startups initially struggled to disrupt incumbents and how a new approach to business model innovation could finally tame runaway healthcare costs. We cover:

The U.S. Navy brig Somers was part of an experimental apprentice program to teach young men, mostly teenagers, to be naval officers. During a return voyage to Africa in 1842, Captain Alexander Slidell Mackenzie learned of a mutiny plot, orchestrated by Philip Spencer and other young crewmen. Spencer was the son of Secretary of War John Spencer, and already had a reputation as a troublemaker. Acting swiftly, Mackenzie ordered the execution of the alleged ringleaders, Philip Spencer, Samuel Cromwell, and Elisha Small. The event sparked a heated debate about naval discipline, the potential miscarriage of justice, and the proper handling of mutiny, led by famed author James Fenimore Cooper. The incident was one of the factors in the establishment of the United States Naval Academy in 1845. Written, edited, and produced by Rich Napolitano. Original theme music by Sean Sigfried. MUTINY OR MURDER? 3/4: Sailing the Graveyard Sea: The Deathly Voyage of the Somers, the U.S. Navy's Only Mutiny, and the Trial That Gripped the Nation by Richard Snow (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Sailing-Graveyard-Sea-Deathly-Gripped/dp/1982185449 On December 16, 1842, the US brig-of-war Somers dropped anchor in the New York Harbor at the end of a voyage intended to teach a group of adolescents the rudiments of naval life. But this routine exercise ended in catastrophe. Commander Alexander Slidell Mackenzie came ashore claiming he had prevented a mutiny that would have left him and his officers dead. Some of the thwarted mutineers were being held under guard, but three had already been hanged at sea: Boatswain's Mate Samuel Cromwell, Seaman Elisha Small, and Acting Midshipman Philip Spencer, whose father was the secretary of war, John Spencer. 1776 NEW YORK FROM THE HUDSON (NORTH RIVER)

It is day eight of our 12 Nightmares Before Christmas. At 5:45 a.m. on May 12, 2005, Michael Ross woke up and got out of bed as usual. It was a partly cloudy morning in Somers, Connecticut, and the day would be warm and pleasant. At 6:00 a.m., Michael had oatmeal for breakfast, then watched television and read the newspaper. After reading for a while, he received communion from a Catholic priest. The day was going well—pretty typical for him, actually. He visited with family and friends in the afternoon for a few hours. The only thing unusual about Michael's dinner of turkey a la king, rice, fruit, mixed vegetables, and white bread was that it would be his last because, a few hours later, Michael Ross was executed by the state of Connecticut. It was the first execution in the state of Connecticut since Joseph “Mad Dog” Taborsky was electrocuted in 1960.
