Pilot Nicki returns to describe her 1948 Globe Swift and explain her plans to make a mid-life career change and become a professional pilot. In the news, the FAA Administrator says what to expect from the “brand new air traffic control system,” a bill to address ADS-B “misuse,” navigating around the debris field after a rocket failure, accelerating the MV-75 Tiltrotor program, flying the Qatari 747 as Air Force One, reduced security restrictions at Heathrow, and a private jet crash in Maine. Guest Nicki Hovanec just reached her goal of 1500 flight hours and now plans to make a mid-life career change and become a professional pilot. She fell in love with aviation at an early age and attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University for Aviation at Daytona Beach, Florida. But 911 impacted Nicki's career trajectory and took her away from aviation. However, with encouragement from her spouse, she returned to aviation, obtained her pilot’s license, and will soon look to be hired by an airline. Nicki trained through independent flight schools and completed her solo in 2017, receiving her initial pilot’s certificate. She continued her training and completed additional certifications on various aircraft while progressing towards her goal of 1500+ flight hours. Nicki saved and borrowed funds to purchase a Cessna 152. Eventually selling that plane, she bought a 1948 Globe Swift tail-dragger, her current airplane. With 1,500 flight hours completed, Nicki now begins the job search for a professional pilot position, starting with the NGPA job fair. We’ll continue to follow her progress. A little history: In May 2017, Nicki sought our advice about starting flying lessons and making a career change to become a professional pilot. We encouraged her to keep us informed about her progress, and Nicki did so by sending us over a dozen recordings documenting her journey getting a pilot's license. We were happy to include those in our podcast episodes. Nicki and her 1948 Globe Swift. FAPA.aero (Future & Active Pilots Alliance) Aviation News FAA's Bedford Provides Glimpse into U.S. ATC's Future At the monthly Aero Club of Washington, D.C. luncheon, FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford talked about the “brand new air traffic control system.” He described: “Greater precision about… flight trajectories… [while] navigating through the airspace.” Many fewer handoffs flying through the system. A cultural shift away from focusing on takeoff to when a pilot wants to land.  Changing the innovation cycle to be more like Apple or Tesla. AOPA urges members to contact their representatives in Congress AOPA issued a call to action asking its 300,000 members to contact their senators and representatives in Congress and urge them to cosponsor the Pilot and Aircraft Privacy Act (PAPA). AOPA President Darren Pleasance said, “When the ADS-B mandate went into effect in 2020, the FAA said this important technology would only be used for safety and airspace efficiency. Instead, we're now seeing it used in ways that discourage adoption…The misuse of ADS-B is a step backward for aviation safety and erodes trust in our aviation system.” If passed, PAPA would prohibit the use of ADS-B data to assist in the collection of fees from pilots or aircraft owners and clarify that ADS-B data may only be used for its intended purposes of air traffic safety and efficiency. PAPA was introduced in 2025 by Rep. Bob Onder (R-Mo.) as H.R.4146 and Sen. Ted Budd (R-N.C.) as S.2175. “We're Too Close to the Debris” On January 16, 2026, ATC instructed Caribbean flights to avoid the FAA's debris zone after a SpaceX Starship rocket exploded. Dozens of planes made sharp turns to avoid the danger zone, which was closed for 86 minutes. ProPublica says this made “pilots and passengers unwitting participants in SpaceX's test of the most powerful rocket ever built.” Army Punches Its MV-75 Tiltrotor Program Into Overdrive The Army wants to see the MV-25 testing this year and in service in 2027. Just twelve months ago, the Army targeted 2030. At the 2022 competition, service was expected in the mid-2030s. The MV-75 is the designation given to the U.S. Army's Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) tiltrotor. The design is based on the Bell V-280 Valor tiltrotor and will replace many of the H-60 Black Hawk helicopters. The V-280 demonstrator has flown, but not the MV-75 configuration. Qatari 747 to fly as Trump's Air Force One this summer In May 2025, the US government accepted the 747 jetliner donated by the Qatari government to serve as a new Air Force One. Modifications began in September. An Air Force spokesperson said in a statement that delivery of the aircraft is anticipated no later than summer 2026. Calling it a “VC-25 bridge aircraft,” the Trump administration intends this plane to serve as an interim Air Force One while waiting for the two 747s currently being modified by Boeing. The Air Force is expecting the first Boeing-modified 747 to be handed over in “mid-2028,” a delay of roughly four years. London’s Heathrow eases liquid and laptop rules after £1 billion security upgrade The airport completed a £1bn CT scanner upgrade across all four Heathrow terminals. This allows passengers to carry liquid containers up to two liters, and the removal of laptops from bags is no longer required. 7 dead, 1 seriously injured in plane crash at airport in Bangor, Maine, FAA says A Bombardier CL-600-2B16 Challenger 650 veered off the runway on takeoff and crashed at Bangor International Airport in Maine. There was snow at the time of the plane crash due to a large winter storm. See also: Private jet carrying 8 crashes at Maine airport, FAA says. Play Episode Listen Later Jan 20, 2026 39:41

We are joined in this episode by Stacey Shubitz, K-6 literacy consultant, a former elementary school teacher, and the co-founder of the Two Writing Teachers blog and podcast. Her forthcoming book, Make the School System Work for Your Child with Disabilities: Empowering Kids for the Future, empowers parents to navigate the special education system. In this episode, we talk openly about what it really takes to support a child with learning challenges in today's school system. Drawing from decades of experience on both sides of the table, Stacey shares why she wrote Make the School System Work for Your Child with Disabilities and what she wishes someone had told her when she was first trying to make sense of evaluations, IEP meetings, and endless paperwork. Our conversation centers on some of the practical mindset shifts that can help change everything for families, with Stacey explaining why leading with a child's strengths and not just their needs is so important for confidence and motivation. She also addresses disability language head-on, discussing why it is that naming disability isn't limiting but instead opens doors to services, legal protections, and access that families often don't realize they're entitled to. Throughout the episode, we highlight how knowledge of data, timelines, rights, and documentation can shift the power dynamic and help parents advocate more effectively. We offer some concrete guidance on when to push for evaluations, why waiting too long can do a lot of harm, and how to ask for progress data without feeling confrontational. Stacey also shares what makes IEP meetings feel collaborative instead of adversarial, from simple preparation strategies to small human touches that ease tension. Communication comes up again and again: how approaching teachers with curiosity, clarity, and respect can lead to better outcomes for kids! Stacey also speaks candidly about burnout, emotional exhaustion, and why joy isn't optional but protective. This conversation offers reassurance, realism, and a clear-eyed look at how parents can show up informed, empowered, and grounded while advocating for their children. Show Notes: [2:32] - Hear how Stacey's experiences with IEPs inspired her to help other parents. [4:04] - Stacey describes leading with strengths, not just challenges or disabilities. [6:03] - Highlighting positives alongside challenges helps children see themselves as capable. [9:42] - Stacey argues that children should know their rights and services so that they can advocate for themselves. [12:49] - It's so important for parents to monitor progress, request data, and push for evaluations when their child isn't advancing. [14:58] - Stacey adds that it's also essential to advocate firmly and request evaluations when interventions aren't producing results. [16:20] - Preparing for meetings with clarity, human touches, and understanding who's present can help make discussions more productive. [19:44] - Coming to meetings prepared with documents in advance helps balance power and supports advocacy. [23:04] - Stacey discusses how reviewing IEPs in advance can help ensure more effective teacher interactions. [25:00] - Approaching teachers with curiosity and gathering accurate information helps promote calm, productive conversations around school. [28:18] - Stacey gives an example of how being open about personal struggles allows teachers to provide better support for children. [30:33] - Stacey asserts that assuming positive intentions about teachers helps lead to collaboration and avoids unnecessary conflict. [32:07] - Stacey wishes that she had known sooner how important it is to read the procedural safeguards book to understand parental rights and timelines. [34:12] - Stacey expresses that she has learned that intentionally curating joy and connection can help prevent burnout. [37:05] - Joy is a legitimate form of intervention. Mark D'Esposito is a  Distinguished Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute.  Drawing on his training in Neurology, Neuroscience and Psychology, his research focuses on investigating the neural bases of high-level cognitive processes such as working memory and cognitive control, achieved through several different experimental approaches and methodologies. First, functional MRI (fMRI), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electrocorticography (ECoG) are used to identify the neural substrates and temporal dynamics of various cognitive processes, especially those supported by the prefrontal cortex, in normal human subjects. Second, the role of the dopaminergic system in working memory and cognitive control is investigated with pharmacological studies during which direct dopaminergic agonists are administered to normal human subjects, as well as patients with Parkinson's disease. Third, behavioral studies in patient populations with frontal lobe dysfunction (e.g. stroke, brain injury) are performed to further understand the mechanisms that underlie working memory and cognitive control. Fourth, based on the knowledge gained from our research on frontal lobe function, we are developing and implementing cognitive therapeutic approaches to patients with traumatic brain injury and healthy elderly with executive function deficits. Finally, our methodological research is aimed at developing improved techniques for the acquisition and the analysis of fMRI and TMS data.Center for Brain Health WebsiteSupport the show

This blog post delves into the nuances of third party rights, offering a roadmap to navigate these tricky waters. The Three-Dimensional Contract WorldContracts are not just agreements between two parties; they often extend obligations and rights beyond the original signatories. This concept is crucial for law students, especially when preparing for exams. Understanding third party rights is essential, as these issues frequently appear disguised within other legal scenarios. The Framework: Five Steps to MasteryIdentify the Role: Determine if the third party is a beneficiary, assignee, or delegatee. This identification is crucial as it sets the stage for further analysis.Validity and Vesting: Assess whether the third party's rights have become permanent. Timing is key here, as it dictates the enforceability of these rights.Rights and Defenses: Analyze what claims can be brought against the third party and who they can sue. This step involves understanding the legal standing and potential defenses.Modifications and Novation: Consider if the original parties have altered the contract before the third party's rights became final. This can significantly impact the third party's legal standing.Breach and Remedies: Finally, evaluate what happens when the contract falls apart. Understanding who is liable and the available remedies is crucial for a comprehensive analysis.Historical Context and Modern ImplicationsThe doctrine of privity of contract historically limited legal actions to the original parties. However, landmark cases like Lawrence V. Fox have expanded these rights, allowing intended beneficiaries to enforce contracts. This evolution reflects the law's adaptation to ensure fairness and prevent unjust enrichment.Mastering the ExamBy following this structured approach, law students can confidently tackle even the most complex exam questions on third party rights. Wind-optimized 'SeaWasp' tanker concept boosts vessel performance

Bluetech's wind-optimized SeaWasp tanker design models demonstrate significant gains in propulsion power and fuel savings on representative trade routes, based on a joint research project with tanker owner International Seaways, Inc. (INSW) Bluetech partnered with NYSE-listed INSW to explore a critical question: Can wind propulsion deliver more power in our ships of the future? Advanced simulations using Bluetech's new 'SeaWasp' vessel design showed the answer to be a resounding yes. SeaWasp boosts vessel performance With the support of wind-propulsion specialist Norsepower, Bluetech modified its BT50 design to extract maximum forward thrust from two 35-metre Rotor SailsTM. This resulted in a total savings of up to 876 kW of propulsion power on one representative INSW MR tanker route from San Francisco to South Korea - equating to around 597.2 MT of fuel per annum. The design modifications alone are estimated to contribute 104 kW or 71.5 MT of the savings, effectively improving the vessel's overall performance by around 13.5% in certain conditions. Wind-assisted ship propulsion (WASP or sometimes WAPS) technologies have traditionally been used to add propulsion power to existing ship types that were not originally designed to accommodate such forces. Even newbuild projects that integrate WASP from the planning phase make little or no changes to the ship's overall design beyond what is necessary to install the units and comply with regulations. However, Bluetech's designers went back to the drawing board with SeaWasp, creating a vessel that is purpose-designed for wind, but still practical for INSW MR fleet operations. STRONG FOCUS ON OPERATING PROFILE "We set out to develop a ship that is entirely WASP-optimized, but maintains every essential operational feature and meets all trade-specific terminal and port restrictions," said Sam Robin, Director of Energy Savings Solutions at Bluetech. Michael LaGrassa, Director of Performance and New Construction at INSW, added: "We focused on more than just energy savings and emissions reduction - our goal was a concept design that works in the real-world conditions of the MR trade. That meant ensuring reasonable build costs, equivalent cargo capacity and a design fit for purpose. Our approach was to test a wide range of scenarios across the MR trade, rather than rely on selectively favorable assumptions." For this reason, the project also carefully examined the lower end of the savings potential. For example, on a route from South Korea to Singapore, the SeaWasp saves 185.9 MT or 275 kW per annum versus a conventionally powered BT50, due to the prevailing wind directions. Keeping such a baseline allowed for a range in the data analysis and ensured that any commercial projections were realistic. EFFICIENCY BY DESIGN - ABOVE AND BELOW THE WATERLINE "On routes where wind propulsion offers limited advantage, the inherent efficiency of the vessel's core design becomes paramount. The BT50 design is itself approximately 12% more efficient than the typical tanker performance profiles in the sample fleet. Our design modifications enhance that efficiency even further," said Robin. One ground-breaking feature beneath the waterline is a unique new fin design dubbed 'blueSURF' that computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis shows has significant power saving potential. "We were genuinely surprised to see such pronounced benefits in power demand, making the fins an additional powerful design modification that improves the case for WASP deployment," said Juha Hanhinen, Head of Hydrodynamics at Bluetech. Modifications above the waterline include an aero upper deck and superstructure, as well as semi-enclosed mooring stations to reduce wind disturbance. COMPARING CONFIGURATIONS The project also examined which Rotor SailsTM configuration - four smaller 24-metre devices instead of the two 35-metre devices - had the best combination of cost versus thrust. "Each configuration had slightly better performan...

Discover the joy of micro-adventures—small, spontaneous outdoor escapes that recharge your spirit without requiring weeks off or expensive gear. Adventure is closer than you think! Plus we talk about the woes of surviving Winterizing your RV/Camper. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka ‘BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Micro Adventures Finding Big Joy in Small Adventures Sometimes, the best adventures don't require plane tickets or elaborate packing lists—they just need a free afternoon and a willingness to step outside. Over the past year, I've become obsessed with what's known as micro-adventures. They're quick, local, and wildly rewarding. What Exactly Is a Micro-Adventure? A micro-adventure is a small, simple trip close to home that brings a sense of exploration and refreshment without the logistics of a full-blown vacation. Think sleeping under the stars in your backyard, kayaking before work, or driving an hour to hike a new trail. British adventurer Alastair Humphreys popularized the idea, but honestly—it's for anyone who loves the outdoors and wants to break out of their daily routine. For me, a micro-adventure might mean grabbing my binoculars, a thermos of coffee or hot cocoa, and watching the sunrise over the Knife River. It's not far, but it feels like a reset button for my brain. Why Micro-Adventures Matter We often treat adventure as something we have to “earn” through vacation time, money, or elaborate plans. But in reality, our need for nature and novelty is daily—not annual. Here's what I've found after making micro-adventures part of my monthly rhythm: They recharge your mental batteries. Even a two-hour nature break can shift your mood dramatically. They're accessible. You don't need fancy gear or tons of time. They spark gratitude. Exploring nearby landscapes reminds you how beautiful “ordinary” places can be. Winterize RV / Camper Tips  Tis the season to winterize that RV if you haven't already. Hopefully you have! However if not, here is a tip that's not shared, talked about... Creating Your Version Of An Owners Manual Hopefully your RV or Camper came with an owners manual, and if not... Now is the time to go online to print it off. Place it in a binder that stays with it. Why to do this? We all have lapses in memory but how you will build upon this owners manual will help with the selling of your RV / Camper too. Now that the camping season has ended, look back - and write or type up things such as: "What Needs To Be Done" before using again, in say the spring.  Maintenance, Replacements and/or Modifications performed. Include dates of oil changes, tires, water pump. Add Insight: every unit operates differently and comes with its own challenges, make it headache free for yourself trying to remember or give that next owner the understanding to confidently feel ready to roll down the road. We began our version the day our RV was purchased and continue to add to the binder which never leaves the camper. Constantly we are referring to updated Owners Manual, and thankful as it proves how easily we forget. OUTDOORS FIELD REPORTS & COMMENTS We want to hear from you! For this episode of the show, we are joined by Amy Cushner! Amy has dedicated more than 30 years to the Shelton School and a lifetime to advocating for neurodivergent individuals, infusing passion, humor, and wisdom into every stage she graces. From classrooms in Dallas to conferences in China, she has become a sought-after voice championing inclusive, strengths-based approaches across both education and business.. In this episode, Amy breaks down the important differences between accommodations, modifications, and remediation in the education system, explaining how these terms are often used interchangeably but have distinct purposes that can significantly impact a child's learning journey. Amy discusses the historical context, which traces back to Thomas Jefferson's vision for public education and the challenges of the "Goldilocks effect," ensuring the right fit for every student. She highlights why it's so important to understand the “magic number” that determines when remediation is provided, highlighting that the need for support does not disappear just because a student falls short of the threshold. Amy stresses the importance of understanding important distinctions as they have major implications for a student's educational journey, particularly when it comes to college and career choices, and she also emphasizes the crucial role of early intervention and the empowerment of students to self-advocate, using visual cues and clear communication about their accommodations. Throughout our conversation, Amy shares some valuable insights and practical advice for parents and educators, highlighting the need for a collaborative approach and the recognition that every child's learning journey is unique.  Show Notes: [3:21] - Amy Cushner traces public education's evolution from Jefferson to modern challenges in individualized learning. [6:54] - Students often get accommodations when remediation or intervention is truly required. [7:12] - Amy criticizes rigid “magic number” cutoffs for remediation, calling them unfair and financially motivated. [9:13] - Accommodations, Amy explains, provide classroom access without altering expectations or content. [11:18] - Amy contrasts accommodations with modifications, which lower expectations to match processing or cognitive challenges. [13:54] - Amy highlights knowing accommodation vs. modification and likens it to learning another country's customs. [15:12] - Remediation can help develop missing skills caused by neurological learning differences, not intellectual deficits. [17:31] - Research shows us that remediation builds entirely new neural pathways, effectively rewiring students' brains. [20:17] - When schools won't fund remediation, parents have to seek external diagnoses and licensed therapists. [23:19] - Hear how true remediation requires trained therapists. [26:45] - Remediation needs to be paired with accommodations like audiobooks for full access. [27:39] - Amy explains how modifications alter curriculum expectations, influencing future school and college options. [30:02] - Amy suggests that teachers can use accommodations across the board to help build learning from the ground up. [32:32] - Starting instruction too high frustrates students, while accommodations let them build confidence gradually. [34:59] - Educational advocates help parents navigate laws, testing, and school obligations, helping to ease parental burdens. [38:10] - Timely intervention prevents years of lost learning caused by eligibility cutoffs. [41:21] - Amy encourages early remediation and teaching children to self-advocate for their accommodations. [44:29] - Honest conversations can help kids avoid developing inaccurate, damaging narratives about struggles. [45:48] - Amy reframes nonstandard brains as strengths that offer unique ways of seeing the world. [47:02] - What is the best way to get in touch with Amy Cushner? Never Too Late: Fitness Expert Sheila Agnew McCoy on Reinventing Health, Purpose, and Joy After 40

In a world that often glorifies youth, it's refreshing to hear stories that remind us: age is just a number, and reinvention is always possible. That's the core message from Sheila L. Agnew McCoy, a 74-year-old Chicago native, certified senior fitness specialist, and nine-year breast cancer survivor. In a recent interview with Steve Gurney of the Positive Aging Community, Sheila shared her journey from corporate burnout to empowering women over 40 through fitness, inspiration, and unapologetic self-love. "As long as the wheel keeps turning, keep going," she says with infectious energy. "Don't stop the wheel. You don't have to."Sheila's story begins with a rebellious spark. As a teenager in Chicago, she once painted bold black stripes across her bedroom walls—a symbol of her spontaneous spirit that would define her life. Raised and educated in the Windy City, she spent a decade in corporate America before launching her own event planning and decorating business. But after 25 years of hustle, burnout hit hard. "I got burned out," she recalls, "and then I started doing women's programs."What started as listening sessions revealed a deep need: inspiration, encouragement, and confidence-building for older women. Around age 40, menopause loomed large—"That is scary," Sheila admits—and it ignited her passion. She dove into research, wrote a slim book in the early 2000s encouraging women over 40, and began leading workshops. "I said, you know what? That's really what I always have wanted to do."Fitness entered the picture organically. After gaining a few pounds from her demanding business, Sheila started walking, then biking along Chicago's lakefront. "It became a passion for me," she says. Not athletic in school—"The only thing I liked about athletes was the men's sports team; I liked going to the gym to pass by the boys' locker room"—she discovered joy in movement during her late 30s and early 40s. Hiring a personal trainer helped her feel confident in the gym, and soon, compliments rolled in: "Wow, you're looking good." That validation fueled her further.Fast-forward to 1999: Sheila was a regular at gyms wherever life took her. At 65, a young trainer pulled her aside. "You should be a senior fitness specialist," he said. "I've been watching you, and other women are watching you too." She got certified, weaving it seamlessly into her workshops and book. Now, at 74, Sheila runs the Smart Path to Fitness for Active Adults, a program designed to dismantle excuses. "If you've never been to a gym, if you've never exercised, if you've got health problems—there's too many excuses out there," Steve notes. Sheila's response? Modifications for everyone, from chair exercises to wheelchair adaptations. Her own health battles underscore this. As a breast cancer survivor, she's passionate about regaining range of motion post-surgery or during treatment—especially timely in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One of her certifications is in corrective exercises, targeting imbalances from injury, surgery, or disease. "A disease does not have to stop you. Injury does not have to stop you," she insists. "You just have to get the correct program." She urges physical therapy and continuity: "I try to do modifications when I do exercises, so it could be for everyone."Sheila's Facebook group, Lifestyle Fitness for Active Adults, offers quick exercises, meal preps, and motivation. Her website, sheilaagnew.com, is a gateway to workshops, her book, and more. As Steve urges: "I hope that our community members go there and get engaged with your community. You're a great inspiration."In Sheila's words, it's simple: Start where you are, keep the wheel turning, and embrace the full you. At any age, that's the real reinvention.

Pregnancy Exercise: Do We Really Need Modifications?

Exercise during pregnancy has long been shrouded in caution and confusion. What if many of the modifications we've been taught are unnecessary? Drawing from both cutting-edge research and personal experience through multiple pregnancies, this episode challenges conventional wisdom about prenatal exercise. The fitness landscape for pregnant women has dramatically evolved over the past decade. Where once pregnant women received advice limited to walking or gentle yoga, we now recognize the benefits of maintaining strength and conditioning throughout pregnancy. But questions remain: should every pregnant woman modify exercises in the same way? Does holding your breath while lifting actually increase your risk of pelvic floor issues? What's the difference between physiologically-based recommendations versus outcome-based evidence? Two distinct approaches have emerged in pregnancy fitness guidance. One camp bases recommendations on physiological changes happening during pregnancy, suggesting universal modifications regardless of individual fitness levels. The other acknowledges the body's remarkable adaptability, suggesting women continue their pre-pregnancy routines until symptoms indicate a need for change. My journey as both a clinician and researcher has led me from firmly believing in the first approach to increasingly embracing the second. Most compelling is emerging evidence showing that fitness level entering pregnancy serves as a protective factor against pain and dysfunction. Rather than focusing exclusively on which movements to avoid, we might better serve pregnant women by emphasizing the importance of strengthening their bodies before and during pregnancy. This represents a profound shift away from fear-based messaging that can unnecessarily limit movement during a critical life stage.Ready to explore how your body's signals might guide your pregnancy fitness journey better than universal modifications? Listen now to discover why the most beneficial approach might be less restrictive than you've been led to believe.___________________________________________________________________________Don't miss out on any of the TEA coming out of the Barbell Mamas by subscribing to our newsletter You can also follow us on Instagram and YouTube for all the up-to-date information you need about pelvic health and female athletes.
