Am 10. April 1987 findet ein Armeeangehöriger in der DDR die Leiche einer jungen Frau in einem kleinen Waldgebiet bei Plauen. Die Volkspolizei sucht nach verdächtigen Männern, die nach dem Mord in der Nähe des Tatorts und am Grab des Opfers gesehen wurden - kann den Fall jedoch nicht aufklären. Kurz vor der Wende vernichtet die StaSi wichtige Aktenunterlagen – das Verbrechen wird zum Cold Case. Zehn Jahre nach der Wiedervereinigung beginnt Kriminalhauptkommissar Enrico Petzold bei der Mordkommission und rollt die Ermittlungen zur getöteten 18-jährigen Ines Bausch* wieder auf. Am Ende legt er rund 200 Ordner an, befragt 5.500 Personen und fährt rund 1.200 Mal nach Plauen und in die Umgebung, um den Täter zu fassen. 30 Jahre nach dem Sexualverbrechen zahlt sich die Hartnäckigkeit des Sachbearbeiters schließlich aus. Aber wenn Sie mal schauen, was dort über mich verbreitet wird, wie ich da angegriffen und herabgewürdigt werde – kein Bundeskanzler vor mir hat so etwas ertragen müssen. Ich beschwere mich nicht darüber, aber so ist es.“Merz hob dabei den Druck durch Öffentlichkeit und soziale Medien hervor.Dass Schröder nicht so angefeindet wurde wie Sie, verwundert nicht, Herr Merz, weil er doch Einiges für das Volk getan hat, und im Gegensatz zu Ihnen kein Bellizist ist. Sie muten dem Volk einen massiven Sozialabbau für die Entwicklung einer Kriegswirtschaft wegen einer herbeigeredeten Kriegsgefahr durch Russland zu, die mit nichts – absolut nichts – begründbar ist.Nennen Sie mir auch nur ein Indiz, warum der Russe 2029 vor der Tür Deutschlands stehen sollte! Das können Sie nicht, weil es kein einziges Indiz dafür gibt! Will der Russe unser Agrarland? Will er unsere Rohstoffe? Machen Sie sich doch nicht lächerlich, Herr Merz und bellizistische Konsorten! Russland ist nur einmal gen Deutschland marschiert, nachdem Deutschland es angegriffen hat. Und wenn Russland eines Tages Krieg mit Europa anfängt – was sich Bellizisten wie Sie, Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron und Ursula von der Leyen zu wünschen scheinen – dann deswegen, weil ihr Kriegstreiber es bewusst zu diesem Schritt zwingt, um nachher behaupten zu können: Wir haben es euch ja gleich gesagt: Der aggressive Russe!Wie kommen Sie, Herr Pistorius, eigentlich auf die Fantasiezahl 2029 für die notwendige Erlangung der „Kriegstüchtigkeit“, wie Sie es so schön bellizistisch formuliert haben – eine Eingebung in einem Traum oder ein dahinterstehendes traumatisches Erlebnis? Meinten sie in Orwell'scher Manier vielleicht 2092?Auf die Anspielung im Spiegelinterview, dass auch Scholz einiges wegstecken musste, meinte Merz, das sei zwar richtig, allerdings sieht er einen fundamentalen Unterschied:„Scholz hat versucht, der Bevölkerung zu sagen, dass alles schon nicht so schlimm wird, wenn man ihn wählt. Er hat ja immer gesagt, er wolle die Sicherheitspolitik nicht gegen die Sozialpolitik ausspielen.“Das könne seine Regierung sich aber nicht mehr leisten, man müsse Prioritäten setzen, meinte Merz. So ein Schmarrn, Herr Bundeskanzler, wenn überhaupt sitzt eine Gefahr für Europas Sicherheit westlich, jenseits des Atlantiks in einem Land mit einem durchgeknallten Präsidenten, und nicht östlich der EU. Als er 2019 die Berliner Zeitung kaufte, machte er sich erneut einflussreiche Feinde. Die gesamte westdeutsche Medienelite drehte durch, weil ein Ossi ein Medienunternehmen übernimmt. Today, the afterlife of communism is equally about monuments and half-ironic memes, retro aesthetics, movie series and board games. Far from being confined to archivesor secondary sources, references to socialist period survive throughout everyday cultural forms and reveal a way of processing histories that were never fully resolved. In our conversation with Anna Váradi and Lucy Jeffery, built around their edited volume Replaying Communism: Trauma and Nostalgia in European Cultural Production, thistension comes into focus. Published this year by the Central European University Press/ Amsterdam University Press, the book presents how cultural productions do not simply represent the socialist period but also give newmeanings and emotional textures.Throughout our conversation, we explore the theoretical underpinnings of the concepts of nostalgia and trauma. Their central claim challenges the familiar binary between nostalgia and opposition. As Anna Váradi and Lucy Jeffery stated intheir introduction, they follow van Liere and Sremac'sunderstanding of trauma, which is: theremembrance of a painful irrevocable past scatters in different modalities of culture, politics, and religion and contributes to new forms of longing and belonging. In this process, nostalgia is a powerful vehicle to (re)present painful pasts in the present while mobilizing hybrid forms of identity and counter-identity.Instead of opposing nostalgia with trauma, Anna Váradi argues that these concepts should be analyzed together. As she stated in the podcast, “for us, trauma and nostalgia are best understood as coexisting forces that shapecontemporary engagement with the past”. More specifically, nostalgia often carries unresolved trauma, while trauma itself can be reactivated through selective, even comforting narratives about the past. At the same time, traumadoes not disappear. It returns, refracted through stories, images and collective narratives that give new political uses.Their chapter on the film series Deutschland 89 makes this analysis more tangible. Moments that feel nostalgic, music, shared habits, familiar images, are never neutral. Theyare tied to experiences of control, division, and adaptation. Even the fall of the Berlin Wall does not appear as a clean break, but as a moment that leaves lasting confusion and imbalance, still visible in political divides today. Asthe chapter concludes, The Deutschland seriesdepicts differences between life in the DDR as opposed to the BRD and the rootlessness experienced during die Wende through plotlines that trace the inescapability ofpast traumas for East Germans.Across the volume, similar patterns emerge. Museums, online humor or board games do not simply preserve the past. Instead, they reorganize it and turn memory intoa field of negotiations where identities are redefined. Among others, Carmen Levick examines how the Romanian Revolution is curated at the History Museum ofBraşov, while Kateryna Yeremieieva shows how Soviet-era anecdotes are recycled in contemporary Russian online media. Lucia Szemetová, in turn, explores GáborZsigmond Papp's Retro Series and the cultural afterlife of Hungarian state propaganda films. Across these cases, the past is not simply preserved but actively negotiated, revealing how memory, culture and politics remain tightly intertwined.

We also discuss some clinical diseases or conditions where a veterinarian may be triggered to look at a copper deficiency. This includes bleaching of the haircoat (achromotrichia), anemia, reproductive performance, growth, and disease consequences due to the role copper plays in innate and humoral immunity. Some of these syndromes may be clinically apparent, but a large portion may be subclinical, and the practitioner should evaluate the entirety of the mineral program to evaluate.  Van Saun discusses the interplay between copper and other minerals and how this interaction can affect copper metabolism. We also discuss general guidelines copper in ruminants and diagnostic procedures for evaluating copper metabolism in a herd.  Due to the impacts of copper on many production and disease issues in ruminants, veterinarians play a critical role in evaluating herds for copper deficiencies by performing a diagnostic work-up and evaluating potential interventions.

Kurt Tucholsky und Else Weil waren um 1910 da. Ihre Alter-Egos Wolfgang und Claire traten erst mit der Veröffentlichung des Buchs im Jahr 1912 auf den Plan. Diese Vermischung hört man des Öfteren auch in den Originaltönen aus Rheinsberg. Die Charaktere geraten immer öfter durcheinander. Aber ohne Kurt kein Wölfchen und Clairchen und ohne Else auch keine Reise mit Kurt. Die beiden Geschichten könnten identisch sein und spiegeln großes Glück. Glück des Moments. Glück des Lebens? Der touristische Influencer? Das wollte ich auch herausfinden. Einige Facts deuten darauf hin. Die Sommerfrische hatte um die Wende zum 20. Jahrhundert dazu geführt, dass immer mehr Berliner begannen das Umland zu entdecken. Es soll Sonderzüge gegeben haben, die bis zu 6.000 Menschen an einem Wochenende nach Rheinsberg und an die brandenburgischen Seen brachten. Das schafft heute allenfalls „Lonely Planet“. War Rheinsberg der „Overtourism-Sündenfall“? Wenn ja, hat es das damals 2.000 Einwohner zählende Städtchen wohl verkraftet. Merkpunkt: Die Bahn konnte und könnte sehr viel bewirken in Sachen Tourismus. Damals wurden auch kleine Orte an die Schiene angeschlossen, Mobilität ermöglicht. Das ist heute weitgehend Historie. Glücklicherweise gibt es den Bahnhof Rheinsberg und Verbindungen nach Berlin bis heute. Nur: Wie gehen Touristen heute mit Rheinsberg, Tucholsky und der kleinen wie großen Geschichte um? Ich bin mit Peter Graf, dem literaturwissenschaftlich-künstlerischen Projektmanager des Museums, durch die Dauerausstellung gegangen, habe das kleine Büchlein, die Erstausgabe von „Rheinsberg“ gesehen, Tucholskys Schaffen kennengelernt und bin dem Menschen Kurt T. und seinem Schicksal begegnet. Wer nach Rheinsberg kommt, sollte das Kurt Tucholsky Museum im Schloss aber zur Pflichtstation machen. Es lohnt sich. Es gibt ein Kombiticket. Damit kann man die Schlossführung mitmachen und danach auch das Museum besuchen. Machen! Das Schild    Die öffentliche Liebeserklärung an das „Bilderbuch für Verliebte“ findet man in der Straße und Anlage „Am Markt“, gleich gegenüber von Ratskeller und Triangelplatz. Niemand weiß so genau, wie das erste Schild dort hingekommen ist, sagen die Rheinsberger. Fest steht aber, dass das restaurierte Schild vor einigen Jahren vom Verein Stadtgeschichte angebracht wurde. Inzwischen war klar, dass es sich hervorragend als „Insta-Location“ eignet. Ich schließe mich da gerne an: Ist toll für ein verliebtes Selfie. Ach ja, ich war ja alleine dort. Es gibt wundervolle Kuchen, leckere Kaffee- und Teespezialitäten und mittags auch kleine Snacks. Über den Birnen-Schmand-Kuchen hab ich im letzten Podcast schon geschwärmt. In der ersten Novemberwoche 2025 bei 15 Grad draußen in der Sonne zu sitzen, machte mein Glück perfekt. Hier kann man alte Buchkultur schnuppern, moderne Kinderliteratur erleben und natürlich den einen oder anderen Tucholsky-Band mitnehmen. Geht auch als Geschenk. Ich finde der Laden gehört einfach zum Rheinsberg-Erlebnis dazu und das schon seit Jahrzehnten. Die Filme Es gibt zwei „Rheinsberg“ – Verfilmungen. Rheinsberg 1 Der erste stammt aus dem Jahr 1967. Kurt Hoffmann hat ihn in der BRD gedreht. Da ist von der guten alten Zeit die Rede. Eine werbende und wertende Aussage, die Kurt Tucholsky sicher verneint hätte. Trotzdem ist es – so man ein wenig Feingefühl für Romantik hat – eine tolle Verfilmung, deren Tonausschnitte ich zur Illustration der Podcast-Akteure benutzt habe. Ein Manko gibt es trotzdem. Der Film konnte damals nicht direkt in Rheinsberg gedreht werden. ES gab zwar eine Anfrage. Die zuständige DEFA lehnte das Ansinnen ab, weil sich die Örtlichkeit nicht in einem filmenswerten Zustand befände. Damit hatte sie sicher recht. Man musste ausweichen, zum Beispiel nach Gut und Schloss Panker in Schleswig-Holstein, das sich in diesem Film als Rheinsberg präsentieren musste. Und gerade auch deshalb wollte ich hin – nach Rheinsberg, um zu sehen, wie es da tatsächlich ausschaut. Ganz unter uns: Schöner als im Film. – Das war mir ganz schnell klar. Da genügte schon ein kleiner Rundgang durch den Schlosspark und auch durchs Städtchen. Heute wäre die Schlossanlage und das Schlosstheater auch wieder in „filmenswertem Zustand“. Der Restaurierung ab 1992 sei Dank. Rheinsberg 2 Hier handelt es sich um eine DEFA DDR-Produktion aus dem Jahr 1987. Zwanzig Jahre später setzt man Schloss und Umgebung geschickt in Szene. Dass die Inhalte sehr viel freizügiger „rüberkommen“ ist sicher auch der Zeit geschuldet. Man kann ihn kostenfrei bei YouTube streamen. Meine Einschätzung: Kann man auch so machen. Was fehlt ist, das auch von Tucholsky angedeutete, Berliner Idiom. Die 1967er Claire (Cornelia Froboess) bleibt hier unübertroffen. Deshalb musste ihre Stimme auch zwingend in den Podcast. Specht oder Schleiereule “Ab ins Schilf”: Grienericksee / Rheinsberg – Foto: Rüdiger Edelmann / ttb-media TON-TEXT-BILD Da gibt es in Buch wie Film 1 einen Disput zwischen Wölfchen und Claire. Er behauptet am See einen Specht zu hören. Sie besteht darauf, es sei eine Schleiereule. Aber die Beiden streiten ja auch darüber, ob der Baum, auf den sie blicken eine Akazie oder “ne Magnolie is”. Auf der Suche nach Claires Schleiereule laufe ich zum See. Setze mich auf eine Bank, schau direkt in den Schilfgürtel und stelle fest, dass auch ich ein wenig verliebt bin. These calves are 8x more likely to have a disease and 19x more likely to experience mortality. There may be some fundamental differences in colostrum for beef calves, and management strategies between the two production systems are vastly different which can present unique challenges for beef producers. Veterinarians are in a unique position to provide consultation to their beef clients to be prepared to intervene with assistance and/or providing a colostrum replacement product. We discuss a study that examined various feeding protocols of colostrum replacer and its impacts on passive transfer, morbidity, mortality and average daily gains. We also discuss areas for future research on beef calf colostrum management and replacement products. Producers should develop a strategy with their dairy clients to plan three years in advance for the number of replacement heifers the herd will require. The veterinarian can play a role in not only assisting with implementation of these programs, but also monitoring reproductive performance and semen selection strategy monitoring to ensure success. The value that is added from maximizing beef-on-dairy calves produced can be equivalent to $2-$3 per cwt of milk. Some loss, such as death, is defined both physically (the person is no longer with us) and psychologically (we understand that the person is gone). With ambiguous loss there is an incongruence between physical and psychological loss. Krekelberg provides some examples of ambiguous loss from our everyday lives. Krekelberg discusses how ambiguous loss might look in a person and offers suggestions for how we can recognize this in our friends, family and clients. Ambiguous loss can be challenging to overcome because we do not know what we are experiencing and grief complicates this process. The GENIUS Act brings regulatory clarity to stablecoins, but Conduit CEO Kirill Gertman argues that clarity alone won't guarantee success. Banks face a choice between building their own infrastructure or becoming the pipes for others. Kirill Gertman has watched the stablecoin industry evolve from multiple angles. He spent nearly two decades in financial services before founding Conduit in 2021, including six years in crypto and a stint as VP of product at BRD, which became Coinbase Wallet. His company grew 16x in 2024 by solving a practical problem: businesses in emerging markets were accumulating stablecoins to hedge against local currency volatility but couldn't use those balances in their day-to-day operations. Conduit now works with tier-one banks and multinational corporations, processing billions in cross-border payments. And with the GENIUS Act bringing the first comprehensive regulatory framework for stablecoins in the United States, Gertman argues the legislation's passage raises as many strategic questions as it answers—particularly for banks that have been sitting on the sidelines. This study looked at submissions to the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory (CAHFS) to evaluate the disease processes and pathogens identified along with micromineral analysis. The primary objective of this study was to determine if the correlation patterns of hepatic Cu, Se, and Mn for disease in the CAHFS diagnostic database at different ages would be similar for beef and dairy cattle.  Villar discusses the results from the study which identified that 33% of beef cattle were deficient in CU, 46% were deficient in Se, and 41% were deficient in both. In dairy cattle, very few animals had deficiencies, indicating appropriate micromineral ration balancing and intakes. The number one disease seen in beef was bovine respiratory disease (BRD) with a median age of 8 months. Of these, 68% were deficient in Cu, Se or both, and most had a history of transportation and commingling. Although BRD was also frequently diagnosed in dairy animals, the median age was 90 days. Salmonella Group D was the next most frequent disease in deficient dairy animals. This paper identifies the importance of micromineral deficiencies and correlations with diseases. The primary study objective was to evaluate the effect of 3-, 6- and 9-day post-treatment intervals on first treatment success and case fatality in naturally occurring bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in stocker calves. Secondary outcomes included days-to-death (DTD) in the same population. The average overall first treatment success was 61.8% with no statistical differences across the three post-treatment intervals. The average case fatality rate was 12.3% with no statistical differences between the treated groups. The authors note that the population studied was stocker cattle which may have explained the higher numbers compared to feedlot cattle reports. We also discuss the inclusion of DTD in this study and the reasons for this outcome variable.  Veterinarians can utilize this information to guide treatment protocols when using pradofloxacin. AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by the faculty that will teach the upcoming AABP Stocker Management Seminar. The faculty include Dr. John Groves, Dr. Dan Cummings and Dr. John Richeson. The seminar will take place in Ashland, Ohio at AABP headquarters July 11-12, 2025. This seminar has been approved for 15.5 hours of continuing education in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval. The fee for the seminar is $450 and includes lunches both days. Attendance is limited to 25.  Feeder cattle populations managed on stocker/backgrounding operations represent a critical segment of the cattle industry. The stocker segment of the industry has evolved into many diverse and specialized business models in recent decades, and practicing veterinarians often find it challenging to serve stocker cattle operations. The seminar will dive into topics that are important to this segment of the cattle industry including transportation and arrival management, host immune response and altered immune function, arrival vaccination, arrival antimicrobials and ancillary products, epidemiologic principles, nutritional management and parasite control. The second day will focus on bovine respiratory disease (BRD) management, diagnostics, surveillance, case definitions and treatment protocols both parenteral and feed grade products, The group will also discuss non-BRD disease in stocker operations such as enteric, neurologic, toxic and nutritional disease. The discussion will also include break-out sessions to discuss cases and present to the group. A systems perspective on BRD and antimicrobial resistance in stocker operations will also be included. The primary mission of AABP is to provide relevant continuing education for cattle veterinarians. AABP recognizes that some veterinarians are unable to devote time attending seminars at the AABP conference. In response to this need, AABP is offering two-day seminar courses outside of the annual and recent graduate conferences. These courses are held in Ashland, Ohio at the AABP office to provide a lower cost option in a small-town atmosphere. All AABP members are invited to register for the seminar. AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich reviews a paper published in The Bovine Practitioner with the first author Madeline Mancke from Kansas State University. The objective of this study was to determine potential associations between Cardiac Troponin I (cTnI) serum concentration of cattle at initial bovine respiratory disease (BRD) treatment with the risk of retreatment or mortality at 60 days. BRD is the most significant disease in beef cattle and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Developing prognostic tools may be valuable for managing individual cases. cTnI is a protein that is released into the circulatory system after myocardial damage and may be useful as a biomarker for prognostication of BRD cases. Mancke walks through the results of the paper which demonstrated that 8/318 samples had high cTnI levels and animals with high cTn1 concentrations had a significantly greater probability of not finishing the 60-day post-enrollment period. Cattle with high cardiac troponin concentrations at initial BRD treatment were more likely to have negative clinical outcomes but, in this study, very few animals had high cTnI levels. Mancke provides information about potential future research opportunities to better manage BRD cases in the feedyard.  The Bovine Practitioner is the peer-reviewed journal published by AABP.
